Amphiesma Stolatum (Striped Keelback): Habitat And Reproduction, D Pryce, C Thorpe, S Kulkarni, T Lewis

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Amphiesma stolatum (Natricinae) is a non-venomous Asiatic colubrid distributed widely from Pakistan, eastward into Southern Asia, northward into south China and on various mainlands and islands across Southeast Asia. In India, the snake is found up to 2000 feet (610 m). A. stolatum is a small species (to 90 cm total length), terrestrial, diurnal, and inhabits well-watered lowland plains, forests, hills, rice paddy, agricultural and rural areas. It has a typical natricine diet and hunts amphibians, fish, invertebrates, small lizards and rodents. Females produce 5-15 eggs per clutch throughout active parts of the year and may also attend clutches. The …

A Critical Evaluation Of The Fish Early-Life Stage Toxicity Test For Engineered Nanomaterials: Experimental Modifications And Recommendations, Bj Shaw, Cc Liddle, Km Windeatt, Rd Handy

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

There are concerns that regulatory toxicity tests are not fit for purpose for engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) or need modifications. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the OECD 210 fish, early-life stage toxicity test for use with TiO2 ENMs, Ag ENMs, and MWCNT. Both TiO2 ENMS (≤160 mg l(-1)) and MWCNT (≤10 mg l(-1)) showed limited acute toxicity, whilst Ag ENMs were acutely toxic to zebrafish, though less so than AgNO3 (6-day LC50 values of 58.6 and 5.0 µg l(-1), respectively). Evidence of delayed hatching, decreased body length and increased muscle width in the tail was seen in …

Peat archives offer a diverse range of physical and chemical proxies from which it is possible to study past environmental and ecological changes. Direct numerical calibration and verification is difficult so process-based and mechanistic studies are therefore required to establish and quantify links between environmental changes and their associated proxy-responses. Traditional ‘space-for-time’ calibrations provide a solution to this calibration problem, but are often unable to isolate a single environmental variable from other potentially confounding variables. In this study, we explored the potential of a site-specific ‘space-for-time’ approach applied to a hummock-hollow transect on an ombrotrophic raised bog in Patagonia, southern …

Glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) are ubiquitous microbial lipids with extensive demonstrated and potential roles as paleoenvironmental proxies. Despite the great attention they receive, comparatively little is known regarding their diagenetic fate. Putative degradation products of GDGTs, identified as hydroxyl and carboxyl derivatives, were detected in lipid extracts of marine sediment, seep carbonate, hot spring sediment and cells of the marine thaumarchaeon Nitrosopumilus maritimus. The distribution of GDGT degradation products in environmental samples suggests that both biotic and abiotic processes act as sinks for GDGTs. More than a hundred newly recognized degradation products afford a view of the stepwise degradation …

Observed Shifts In The Contact Zone Between Two Forms Of The Diving Beetle Hydroporus Memnonius Are Consistent With Predictions From Sexual Conflict., David T. Bilton, Garth N. Foster

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Sexual conflict drives both inter- and intrasexual dimorphisms in many diving beetles, where male persistence and female resistance traits co-evolve in an antagonistic manner. To date most studies have focussed on species where rough and smooth females and their associated males typically co-occur within populations, where phenotype matching between morphs may maintain forms as stable polymorphisms. The Palaearctic diving beetle Hydroporus memnonius is characterised by having dimorphic (rough var. castaneus and smooth, shining) females and associated males which differ in persistence traits; the two forms being largely distributed parapatrically. In this species, instead of mating trade-offs between morphs, males associated …

The Bet Inhibitor Jq1 Selectively Impairs Tumour Response To Hypoxia And Downregulates Ca9 And Angiogenesis In Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Ll Da Motta, I Ledaki, K Purshouse, S Haider, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

The availability of bromodomain and extra-terminal inhibitors (BETi) has enabled translational epigenetic studies in cancer. BET proteins regulate transcription by selectively recognizing acetylated lysine residues on chromatin. BETi compete with this process leading to both downregulation and upregulation of gene expression. Hypoxia enables progression of triple negative breast cancer (TNBC), the most aggressive form of breast cancer, partly by driving metabolic adaptation, angiogenesis and metastasis through upregulation of hypoxia-regulated genes (for example, carbonic anhydrase 9 (CA9) and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A). Responses to hypoxia can be mediated epigenetically, thus we investigated whether BETi JQ1 could impair the TNBC …

The Observing Self: Diminishing Egocentrism Through Brief Mindfulness Meditation, M Golubickis, Lbg Tan, Jk Falben, Cn Macrae

School of Psychology

Reflecting the egocentrism that permeates contemporary society, people often believe they stand out in the eyes of others (i.e., the spotlight effect), a conviction that is entirely misplaced. Although considerable efforts have focused on elucidating the consequences of the spotlight effect, much less is known about factors that may attenuate this illusory perception. Accordingly, the current study explored the possibility that, via shifts in perspectives on the self (i.e., first person vs. third person), brief mindfulness-based meditation may reduce a future-oriented variant of this bias. The results revealed that, compared with responses in the control conditions (i.e., control meditation or …

Bathymodioline Mussel Dominated Miocene Whale Fall From Italy, S Danise, L Bertolaso, S Dominici

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The bones of an unidentified odontocete from the Langhian Pantano Formation (~ 15 million years ago), found near the town of Carpineti (Reggio Emilia), Northern Italy, are associated with more than two hundred specimens of the bathymodioline mussel Adipicola apenninica n. sp., rare specimens of Thyasira sp. and one Lucinidae indet. Based on comparisons with modern and other fossil whale fall communities, the fossil molluscs associated with the odontocete represent a whale fall community during the sulphophilic stage of the ecological succession. Our finding indicates the presence of chemosynthetic communities associated with organic remains in the proto-Mediterranean-Atlantic region at least …

Ranking Of Fibre-Reinforced Composite Plate Surface Finish Quality By Wavelet Texture Analysis, S. Palmer, W. Hall, J. Summerscales

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In the automotive and other industries, the visual appearance of external surfaces is a key factor in perceived product quality. Traditionally, the quality of automotive surface finish has been judged by expert human auditors. A set of 17 fibre-reinforced composite plates was previously manufactured to have a range of surface finish quality, and these plates were previously ranked by three expert observers and also optically digitally imaged. Following validation of the previous rankings, we applied the wavelet texture analysis (WTA) technique to the digital photographs to derive an instrumental measure of surface finish quality based on the panel images. The …

Discovery Of Novel Biomarkers For Alzheimer's Disease From Blood, Jintao Long, Genhua Pan, Emmanuel Ifeachor, Robert Belshaw, Xinzhong Li

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Blood-based biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease would be very valuable because blood is a more accessible biofluid and is suitable for repeated sampling. However, currently there are no robust and reliable blood-based biomarkers for practical diagnosis. In this study we used a knowledge-based protein feature pool and two novel support vector machine embedded feature selection methods to find panels consisting of two and three biomarkers. We validated these biomarker sets using another serum cohort and an RNA profile cohort from the brain. Our panels included the proteins ECH1, NHLRC2, HOXB7, FN1, ERBB2, and SLC6A13 and demonstrated promising sensitivity (>87%), specificity …

Schwannomas are predominantly benign nerve sheath neoplasms caused by Nf2 gene inactivation. Presently, treatment options are mainly limited to surgical tumor resection due to the lack of effective pharmacological drugs. Although the mechanistic understanding of Nf2 gene function has advanced, it has so far been primarily restricted to Schwann cell-intrinsic events. Extracellular cues determining Schwann cell behavior with regard to schwannoma development remain unknown. Here we show pro-tumourigenic microenvironmental effects on Schwann cells where an altered axonal microenvironment in cooperation with injury signals contribute to a persistent regenerative Schwann cell response promoting schwannoma development. Specifically in genetically engineered mice following …

Thingbook: The Society Of All Things (Humans, Animals, Things And Data), G Corino, M Phillips

School of Art, Design and Architecture

In considering the origin of Things, it is quite conceivable that a designer, reflecting on the mutual affinities of organic and inorganic beings, on their morphological relations, their geographical distribution, cultural succession, social function and other such facts, might come to the conclusion that things had not been independently created, but had descended, like varieties, from other Things. Nevertheless, such a conclusion, even if well founded, would be unsatisfactory, until it could be shown how the innumerable Things, inhabiting this world have been modified, so as to acquire that perfection of structure and coadaptation which justly excites our imagination. Tspan5 Is An Independent Favourable Prognostic Factor And Suppresses Tumour Growth In Gastric Cancer, P He, S Wang, X Zhang, Y Gao, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

Tetraspanins are believed to interact with specific partner proteins forming tetraspanin-enriched microdomains and regulate some aspects of partner protein functions. However, the role of Tspan5 during pathological processes, particularly in cancer biology, remains unknown. Here we report that Tspan5 is significantly downregulated in gastric cancer (GC) and closely associated with clinicopathological features including tumour size and TNM stage. The expression of Tspan5 is inversely correlated with patient overall survival and is an independent prognostic factor in GC. Upregulation of Tspan5 in tumour cells results in inhibition of cell proliferation and colony formation in vitro and suppression of xenograft growth of …

An Evolutionary Perspective On The Co-Occurrence Of Social Anxiety Disorder And Alcohol Use Disorder, A Bulley, B Miloyan, B Brilot, Mj Gullo, T Suddendorf

School of Psychology

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) commonly co-occurs with, and often precedes, Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). In this paper, we address the relationship between SAD and AUD by considering how natural selection left socially anxious individuals vulnerable to alcohol use, and by addressing the underlying mechanisms. We review research suggesting that social anxiety has evolved for the regulation of behaviors involved in reducing the likelihood or consequences of threats to social status. The management of potential threats to social standing is important considering that these threats can result in reduced cooperation or ostracism - and therefore to reduced access to coalitional partners, …

Advances In Ophthalmic Techniques And Technology: What Should I Note When Assessing The Retinal Vasculature?, Sa Mroczkowska

School of Health Professions

Introduction The retinal vasculature is unique in that, unlike any other systemic vascular bed, it can be assessed directly and non-invasively in vivo. Optometrists routinely evaluate the state of the retina and its microvasculature as part of any normal ophthalmic assessment and if considered carefully, such an evaluation has the potential to provide a unique insight into general vascular health. Advances in imaging technology have enhanced our ability to evaluate and document changes in the retinal vasculature over time and the recent introduction of new objective retinal image analysis techniques has the potential to significantly improve the accuracy and usability …
