The presence of a di-unsaturated highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) lipid biomarker (diene II) in Southern Ocean sediments has previously been proposed as a proxy measure of palaeo Antarctic sea ice. Here we show that a source of diene II is the sympagic diatom Berkeleya adeliensis Medlin. Furthermore, the propensity for B. adeliensis to flourish in platelet ice is reflected by an offshore downward gradient in diene II concentration in >100 surface sediments from Antarctic coastal and near-coastal environments. Since platelet ice formation is strongly associated with super-cooled freshwater inflow, we further hypothesize that sedimentary diene II provides a potentially sensitive …

Increasing The Depth Of Current Understanding: Sensitivity Testing Of Deep-Sea Larval Dispersal Models For Ecologists, Rebecca E. Ross, W. Alex M. Nimmo-Smith, Kerry L. Howell

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Larval dispersal is an important ecological process of great interest to conservation and the establishment of marine protected areas. Increasing numbers of studies are turning to biophysical models to simulate dispersal patterns, including in the deep-sea, but for many ecologists unassisted by a physical oceanographer, a model can present as a black box. Sensitivity testing offers a means to test the models' abilities and limitations and is a starting point for all modelling efforts. The aim of this study is to illustrate a sensitivity testing process for the unassisted ecologist, through a deep-sea case study example, and demonstrate how sensitivity …

Conflicts In Some Of The World Harbours: What Needs To Happen Next?, S Pearson, W Windupranata, Sw Pranowo, A Putri, Et Al

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Harbours are a focus of intensive and diverse activities and thus have a high potential to become centres of conflict between users. Reviewing the multiple uses associated with harbours provides important insights into maritime communities and the management of conflict. In this paper, seven international, multi-disciplinary groups provide their expert synthesis of individual harbours. After a detailed discussion experts from Sydney, Qingdao, Vigo, Auckland, Jakarta, Crete and Plymouth synthesised and shared their harbour’s characteristics, user conflicts and how such conflicts have been researched and managed. The paper addresses an omission of “conflict” in most of the research literature about harbours, …

Foot Health Problems – When To Refer To A Podiatrist, M Mcmullan Aug 2016

Foot Health Problems – When To Refer To A Podiatrist, M Mcmullan

School of Health Professions

Although our feet are essential for our balance, weight bearing and mobility, we have a tendency to ignore them and to take them for granted. This is until something goes wrong with them. Problems with our feet will not only affect our general feeling of well-being but, particularly in the elderly, if these problems lead to falls and impaired mobility it can be the difference between being independent or being dependent on others. Foot health problems can be minor (such as dry skin, long and healthy toe nails) which can be cared for by nurses using basic foot care or …

Co-Exploring Actuator Antagonism And Bio-Inspired Control In A Printable Robot Arm, Mf Stoelen, F Bonsignorio, A Cangelosi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The human arm is capable of performing fast targeted movements with high precision, say in pointing with a mouse cursor, but is inherently ‘soft’ due to the muscles, tendons and other tissues of which it is composed. Robot arms are also becoming softer, to enable robustness when operating in real-world environments, and to make them safer to use around people. But softness comes at a price, typically an increase in the complexity of the control required for a given task speed/accuracy requirement. Here we explore how fast and precise joint movements can be simply and effectively performed in a soft …

Simultaneous Targeting Of Eph Receptors In Glioblastoma, S Ferluga, Cml Tomé, Dm Herpai, R D’Agostino, W Debinski Aug 2016

Simultaneous Targeting Of Eph Receptors In Glioblastoma, S Ferluga, Cml Tomé, Dm Herpai, R D’Agostino, W Debinski

Peninsula Medical School

Eph tyrosine kinase receptors are frequently overexpressed and functional in many cancers, and they are attractive candidates for targeted therapy. Here, we analyzed the expression of Eph receptor A3, one of the most up-regulated factors in glioblastoma cells cultured under tumorsphere-forming conditions, together with EphA2 and EphB2 receptors. EphA3 was overexpressed in up to 60% of glioblastoma tumors tested, but not in normal brain. EphA3 was localized in scattered areas of the tumor, the invasive ring, and niches near tumor vessels. EphA3 co-localized with macrophage/leukocyte markers, suggesting EphA3 expression on tumor-infiltrating cells of bone marrow origin. We took advantage of …

Detection Of Infectious Disease Outbreaks From Laboratory Data With Reporting Delays, A Noufaily, P Farrington, P Garthwaite, Et Al Aug 2016

Detection Of Infectious Disease Outbreaks From Laboratory Data With Reporting Delays, A Noufaily, P Farrington, P Garthwaite, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

Many statistical surveillance systems for the timely detection of outbreaks of infectious disease operate on laboratory data. Such data typically incur reporting delays between the time at which a specimen is collected for diagnostic purposes, and the time at which the results of the laboratory analysis become available. Statistical surveillance systems currently in use usually make some ad hoc adjustment for such delays, or use counts by time of report. We propose a new statistical approach that takes account of the delays explicitly, by monitoring the number of specimens identified in the current and past m time units, where m …

Evaluation Of Turbulence Closure Models Under Spilling And Plunging Breakers In The Surf Zone, S. A. Brown, D. M. Greaves, V. Magar, D. C. Conley Aug 2016

Evaluation Of Turbulence Closure Models Under Spilling And Plunging Breakers In The Surf Zone, S. A. Brown, D. M. Greaves, V. Magar, D. C. Conley

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Turbulence closure models are evaluated for application to spilling and plunging breakers in the surf zone using open source computational fluid dynamics software. A new library of turbulence models for application to multiphase flows has been developed and is assessed for numerical efficiency and accuracy by comparing against existing laboratory data for surface elevation, velocity and turbulent kinetic energy profiles. Out of the models considered, it was found that, overall, the best model is the nonlinear k - ϵ model. The model is also shown to exhibit different turbulent characteristics between the different breaker types, consistent with experimental data.

Objectives: Molecular mechanisms linking autonomic dysfunction with poorer clinical outcomes in critical illness remain unclear. We hypothesized that baroreflex dysfunction alone is sufficient to cause cardiac impairment through neurohormonal activation of (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase dependent) oxidative stress resulting in increased expression of G-protein-coupled receptor kinase 2, a key negative regulator of cardiac function. Design: Laboratory/clinical investigations. Setting: University laboratory/medical centers. Subjects: Adult rats; wild-type/nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase subunit-2-deficient mice; elective surgical patients. Interventions: Cardiac performance was assessed by transthoracic echocardiography following experimental baroreflex dysfunction (sino-aortic denervation) in rats and mice. Immunoblots assessed G-protein-coupled receptor recycling proteins expression …
