Depth Related Brachiopod Faunas From The Lower Cambrian Forteau Formation Of Southern Labrador And Western Newfoundland, Canada, Cb Skovsted, I Knight, Ku Balthasar, Wd Boyce
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
A diverse fauna of organophosphatic brachiopods is described from the late early Cambrian (Series 2, Stage 3-4) Forteau Formation of southern Labrador and western Newfoundland. The total fauna includes 11 species representing a wide selection of Cambrian brachiopod groups. Three distinct assemblages are recognized: Assemblages 1 and 2 are found in shallow water carbonates in association with archaeocyathans in southern Labrador and the western side of the Great Northern Peninsula of western Newfoundland. Assemblage 3 is found in a distal shelf setting of Gros Morne National Park. Assemblages 1 and 2 are found in stratigraphic continuity and define two brachiopod …

Aggregations of living unattached corallines, previously often referred to as nodules, were given the name rhodoliths by Bosselini and Ginsburg ( 1971 ). Adey and MacIntyre ( 1973 ) provided an early discussion of their genesis and distribution. Such aggregations have long been known as maerl in the North East Atlantic, a Breton term for unattached thalli that lack a shell or pebble core (Irvine and Chamberlain 1994 ). Here, we provide an overview of rhodolith/maerl occurrence in the colder/temperate waters of the North Atlantic and summarize the distribution, species composition, biodiversity and ecological importance of these habitats.

AbstractMicroalgae are widely viewed as a promising and sustainable source of renewable chemicals and biofuels. Botryococcus braunii synthesizes and secretes significant amounts of long‐chain (C30‐C40) hydrocarbons that can be subsequently converted into gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel. B. braunii cultures are not axenic and the effects of co‐cultured microorganisms on B. braunii growth and hydrocarbon yield are important, but sometimes contradictory. To understand the composition of the B. braunii microbial consortium, we used high throughput Illumina sequencing of metagenomic DNA to profile the microbiota within a well established, stable B. braunii culture and characterized the demographic changes in the microcosm …

Research on urban insect pollinators is changing views on the biological value and ecological importance of cities. The abundance and diversity of native bee species in urban landscapes that are absent in nearby rural lands evidence the biological value and ecological importance of cities and have implications for biodiversity conservation. Lagging behind this revised image of the city are urban conservation programs that historically have invested in education and outreach rather than programs designed to achieve high-priority species conservation results. We synthesized research on urban bee species diversity and abundance to determine how urban conservation could be repositioned to better …

Coastal Bacterioplankton Community Response To Diatom-Derived Polysaccharide Microgels, Joe D. Taylor, Michael Cunliffe
Coastal Bacterioplankton Community Response To Diatom-Derived Polysaccharide Microgels, Joe D. Taylor, Michael Cunliffe
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Phytoplankton-derived polysaccharide microgels, including transparent exopolymer particles (TEP), are a major component of the marine organic carbon pool. Previous studies have made correlative links between phytoplankton material and bacterioplankton, and performed experiments that assess general responses to phytoplankton, yet there is a lack of direct empirical evidence of specific bacterioplankton responses to natural phytoplankton polysaccharide microgels. In this study, we used diatom produced TEP in controlled incubation experiments to determine the impact of polysaccharide microgels on a coastal bacterioplankton community. Quantification of bacterial 16S rRNA gene transcripts showed that the addition of TEP caused an increase in bacterioplankton activity. Similarly, …

Glucocorticoids, including corticosterone (CORT), have been suggested to provide a physiological link between ecological conditions and fitness. Specifically, CORT, which is elevated in response to harsh conditions, is predicted to be correlated with reduced fitness. Yet, empirical studies show that CORT can be non-significantly, positively and negatively linked with fitness. Divergent environmental conditions between years or study systems may influence whether CORT is linked to fitness. To test this, we monitored free-living blue tits ( Cyanistes caeruleus ) during breeding over 3 years. We quantified foraging conditions during brood rearing, and examined whether they were correlated with parental baseline CORT …

Assessments of the combined ecological impacts of ocean acidification and warming (OAW) and their social and economic consequences can help develop adaptive and responsive management strategies in the most sensitive regions. Here, available observational and experimental data, theoretical, and modelling approaches are combined to project and quantify potential effects of OAW on the future fisheries catches and resulting revenues and employment in the UK under different CO2 emission scenarios. Across all scenarios, based on the limited available experimental results considered, the bivalve species investigated were more affected by OAW than the fish species considered, compared with ocean warming alone. Projected …

Applied Gaussian Process In Optimizing Unburned Carbon Content In Fly Ash For Boiler Combustion, C Wang, Y Liu, Rm Everson, Aam Rahat, S Zheng
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Recently, Gaussian Process (GP) has attracted generous attention from industry. This article focuses on the application of coal fired boiler combustion and uses GP to design a strategy for reducing Unburned Carbon Content in Fly Ash (UCC-FA) which is the most important indicator of boiler combustion efficiency. With getting rid of the complicated physical mechanisms, building a data-driven model as GP is an effective way for the proposed issue. Firstly, GP is used to model the relationship between the UCC-FA and boiler combustion operation parameters. The hyperparameters of GP model are optimized via Genetic Algorithm (GA). Then, served as the …

Oscillatory Neural Models Of The Basal Ganglia For Action Selection In Healthy And Parkinsonian Cases, R Borisyuk
Oscillatory Neural Models Of The Basal Ganglia For Action Selection In Healthy And Parkinsonian Cases, R Borisyuk
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
The neuronal circuits of the Basal Ganglia (BG) play an important role in movement control and it is known that without correctly functioning BG, the cortex’s ability to control movements is diminished. Parkinson’s disease (PD), for example, is primarily a disease of the basal ganglia. One aspect of pathological activity in the parkinsonian basal ganglia is an increase in synchronous oscillatory firing patterns

A Modular Architecture For Transparent Computation In Recurrent Neural Networks, Gs Carmantini, P Beim Graben, M Desroches, S Rodrigues
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Computation is classically studied in terms of automata, formal languages and algorithms; yet, the relation between neural dynamics and symbolic representations and operations is still unclear in traditional eliminative connectionism. Therefore, we suggest a unique perspective on this central issue, to which we would like to refer as transparent connectionism, by proposing accounts of how symbolic computation can be implemented in neural substrates. In this study we first introduce a new model of dynamics on a symbolic space, the versatile shift, showing that it supports the real-time simulation of a range of automata. We then show that the Gödelization of …

Microplastics have been documented in marine environments worldwide, where they pose a potential risk to biota. Environmental interactions between microplastics and lower trophic organisms are poorly understood. Coastal shelf seas are rich in productivity but also experience high levels of microplastic pollution. In these habitats, fish have an important ecological and economic role. In their early life stages, planktonic fish larvae are vulnerable to pollution, environmental stress and predation. Here we assess the occurrence of microplastic ingestion in wild fish larvae. Fish larvae and water samples were taken across three sites (10, 19 and 35 km from shore) in the …
