Synchrony Is More Than Its Top-Down And Climatic Parts: Interacting Moran Effects On Phytoplankton In British Seas, Lw Sheppard, Ej Defriez, Pc Reid, Dc Reuman
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Large-scale spatial synchrony is ubiquitous in ecology. We examined 56 years of data representing chlorophyll density in 26 areas in British seas monitored by the Continuous Plankton Recorder survey. We used wavelet methods to disaggregate synchronous fluctuations by timescale and determine that drivers of synchrony include both biotic and abiotic variables. We tested these drivers for statistical significance by comparison with spatially synchronous surrogate data. Identification of causes of synchrony is distinct from, and goes beyond, determining drivers of local population dynamics. We generated timescale-specific models, accounting for 61% of long-timescale (> 4yrs) synchrony in a chlorophyll density index, but …

Objective: To understand the role of WFDC2 in metastasis of ovarian cancer. Methods: By knockdown or overexpression of WFDC2, we demonstrated the role of WFDC2 in epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Results: We demonstrated that stable knockdown of WFDC2 suppressed EMT along with the upregulation of E-cadherin and the downregulation of Vimentin. In addition, WFDC2 knockdown decreases matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) expression in in vitro cell model and in in vivo nude mice xenografts. The correlation of WFDC2 and MMP-2 expression in the clinical sample confirmed that WFDC2 was tightly correlated with the development of tumor. More importantly, the EMT phenotype and cell …

Marine harbours are the focus of a diverse range of activities and subject to multiple anthropogenically induced pressures. Support for environmental management options aimed at improving degraded harbours depends on understanding the factors which influence people's perceptions of harbour environments. We used an online survey, across 12 harbours, to assess sources of variation people's perceptions of harbour health and ecological engineering. We tested the hypotheses: 1) people living near impacted harbours would consider their environment to be more unhealthy and degraded, be more concerned about the environment and supportive of and willing to pay for ecological engineering relative to those …

Deviant Leisure: A Critical Criminological Perspective For The Twenty-First Century, Thomas Raymen, Oliver Smith
Deviant Leisure: A Critical Criminological Perspective For The Twenty-First Century, Thomas Raymen, Oliver Smith
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This article argues that the time has arrived for leisure and consumerism to become key objects of study for a twenty-frst century critical criminology. As global capitalism struggles to sustain itself, it is creating myriad crises in areas such as climate change, mental health, personal debt, and unemployment. Using a zemiological lens, we argue that it is on the feld of commodifed leisure and consumerism that criminologists can see these metacrises of liberal capitalism unfold. Therefore, this article positions the burgeoning deviant leisure perspective as a new and distinct form of twenty-first critical criminology—one that departs from traditional criminological approaches …
Cadmium Pigments In Consumer Products And Their Health Risks, Andrew Turner
Cadmium Pigments In Consumer Products And Their Health Risks, Andrew Turner
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
© 2018 Elsevier B.V. Cadmium is a toxic heavy metal that has been increasingly regulated over the past few decades. The main exposure routes for the general public are the consumption of certain foods and the inhalation of cigarette smoke. However, additional exposure may occur through the current and historical use of the metal in consumer products. In this paper, the uses of Cd in consumer goods are reviewed, with the focus on brightly-coloured Cd sulphide and sulphoselenide pigments, and measurements of Cd in historical and contemporary products ascertained by XRF are reported. Cadmium is encountered across a wide range …

© 2019 In some previous studies, the ratio between a di-unsaturated highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) lipid termed IPSO 25 and a structurally related tri-unsaturated counterpart (HBI III) (viz. IPSO 25 /HBI III) has been used as a proxy measure of variable sea ice cover in the Antarctic owing to their production by certain sea ice algae and open water diatoms, respectively. To investigate this further, we quantified selected lipids and their photo- and autoxidation products in samples of suspended particulate matter (SPM) collected at different water depths in the polynya region west of the Dalton Iceberg Tongue (East Antarctica). Improved Isotopic Model Based On 15N Tracing And Rayleigh‐Type Isotope Fractionation For Simulating Differential Sources Of N2O Emissions In A Clay Grassland Soil, A Castellano‐Hinojosa, N Loick, E Dixon, Gp Matthews, Et Al
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Rationale Isotopic signatures of N2O can help distinguish between two sources (fertiliser N or endogenous soil N) of N2O emissions. The contribution of each source to N2O emissions after N-application is difficult to determine. Here, isotopologue signatures of emitted N2O are used in an improved isotopic model based on Rayleigh-type equations. Methods The effects of a partial (33% of surface area, treatment 1c) or total (100% of surface area, treatment 3c) dispersal of N and C on gaseous emissions from denitrification were measured in a laboratory incubation system (DENIS) allowing simultaneous measurements of NO, N2O, N2 and CO2 over a …

“Gravity” - A New Simple Negative Pressure Wound Therapy Self-Build Design For Low Income Countries, Aj Ramadhar, F Abraham, C Mcallen
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) is prohibitively expensive at the moment and therefore not easily accessible in low-income countries. An additional problem is the requirement of consistent reliable electricity to power the devices. A new low-cost NPWT device was designed from low cost and simple materials and it can be built and operated following a simple set of instructions. The so-called Gravity device was made from parts costing just under £6 GBP (May 2016) and it creates a constant pressure of 125 mmHg. Gravity operated from 4 hours and 40 minutes up to 5 hours and 18 minutes before needing …

Would A Robot Trust You? Developmental Robotics Model Of Trust And Theory Of Mind, A Cangelosi
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Trust is a critical issue in human-robot interactions: as robotic systems gain complexity, it becomes crucial for them to be able to blend in our society by maximizing their acceptability and reliability. Various studies have examined how trust is attributed by people to robots, but less have investigated the opposite scenario, where a robot is the trustor and a human is the trustee. The ability for an agent to evaluate the trustworthiness of its sources of information is particularly useful in joint task situations where people and robots must collaborate to reach shared goals. We propose an artificial cognitive architecture …

Graphene Oxide-Based Targeting Of Extracellular Cathepsin D And Cathepsin L As A Novel Anti-Metastatic Enzyme Cancer Therapy, T Tanveer, P M, H David, Aa Rahat, Et Al
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Overexpression and secretion of the enzymes cathepsin D (CathD) and cathepsin L (CathL) is associated with metastasis in several human cancers. As a superfamily, extracellularly, these proteins may act within the tumor microenvironment to drive cancer progression, proliferation, invasion and metastasis. Therefore, it is important to discover novel therapeutic treatment strategies to target CathD and CathL and potentially impede metastasis. Graphene oxide (GO) could form the basis of such a strategy by acting as an adsorbent for pro-metastatic enzymes. Here, we have conducted research into the potential of targeted anti-metastatic therapy using GO to adsorb these pro-tumorigenic enzymes. Binding of …

© 2019 Elsevier Ltd Deep sea sediments have emerged as a potential sink for microplastics in the marine environment. The discovery of microplastics in various environmental compartments of the Arctic Central Basin (ACB) suggested that these contaminants were potentially being transported to the deep-sea realm of this oceanic basin. For the first time, the present study conducted a preliminary assessment to determine whether microplastics were present in surficial sediments from the ACB. Gravity and piston corers were used to retrieve sediments from depths of 855–4353 m at 11 sites in the ACB during the Arctic Ocean 2016 (AO16) expedition. Surficial …

Spontaneous Vicarious Perception Of The Content Of Another’S Visual Perspective, Eleanor Ward, Giorgio Ganis, Patric Bach
School of Psychology
Visual perspective taking (VPT) is a core process of social cognition, providing humans with insights into how the environment looks from another’s point of view [1-4]. While VPT is often described as a quasi-perceptual phenomenon [5,6], evidence for this proposal has been lacking. Here we provide direct evidence that another’s perspective can “stand in” for own sensory input perceptual decision-making. In a variant of the classic mental rotation task, participants judged whether characters presented in different orientations were canonical or mirror-inverted. In the absence of another person, we replicate the well-established positive linear relationship between recognition times and angle of …

Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS) is a common, heritable and evolutionarily conserved trait describing inter-individual differences in sensitivity to both negative and positive environments. Despite societal interest in SPS, scientific knowledge is lagging behind. Here, we critically discuss how SPS relates to other theories, how to measure SPS, whether SPS is a continuous vs categorical trait, its relation to other temperament and personality traits, the underlying aetiology and neurobiological mechanisms, and relations to both typical and atypical development, including mental and sensory disorders. Drawing on the diverse expertise of the authors, we set an agenda for future research to stimulate the …
Within‐Generation Consequences Of Post‐Settlement Mortality For Trait Composition In Wild Populations: An Experimental Test, Benjamin J. Ciotti, Serge Planes
Within‐Generation Consequences Of Post‐Settlement Mortality For Trait Composition In Wild Populations: An Experimental Test, Benjamin J. Ciotti, Serge Planes
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
There is a critical need to understand patterns and causes of intraspecific variation in physiological performance in order to predict the distribution and dynamics of wild populations under natural and human-induced environmental change. However, the usual explanation for trait differences, local adaptation, fails to account for the small-scale phenotypic and genetic divergence observed in fishes and other species with dispersive early life stages. We tested the hypothesis that local-scale variation in the strength of selective mortality in early life mediates the trait composition in later life stages. Through in situ experiments, we manipulated exposure to predators in the coral reef …

© 2018 Elsevier Ltd The honeycomb worm Sabellaria alveolata is capable of building extensive bioconstructions, including what are currently considered Europe's largest biogenic reefs. The size and volume of these bioconstructions, however, vary greatly, such that not all habitats engineered by S. alveolata may be easily identified as reefs. Given that European environmental legislation protects marine habitats that are classified as “reefs” it is important to identity a clear set of definition criteria. Furthermore, quantifiable and unequivocal criteria are also needed to evaluate the ecological (health) state of these reefs, in order to best monitor and protect them. Here we …

the stable isotope composition of key chemical elements for life on Earth (e.g., carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur) tracks changes in fluxes and turnover of these elements in the biogeosphere. Over the past 15–20 years, the potential to measure these isotopic compositions for individual, source-specific organic molecules (biomarkers) and to link them to a range of environmental conditions and processes has been unlocked and amplified by increasingly sensitive, affordable and wide-spread analytical technology. Paleoenvironmental research has seen enormous step-changes in our understanding of past ecosystem dynamics. Vital to these paradigm shifts is the need for well-constrained modern and recent analogues. …

© 2019, © 2019 British Phycological Society. Undaria pinnatifida, a kelp species native to East Asia, has become cosmopolitan and drawn increasing attention due to its worldwide spread in recent decades. Floating fragments of this alga were found washed ashore on Sylt in 2016, the first record of this species in Germany. Thalli attached to local oyster reefs were detected in 2017. The genetic relationship between the floating and attached thalli on Sylt, as well as their relevance to the populations from northern Europe and native regions, was hitherto unknown. Here, 10 microsatellite markers were used to assess relationships between …
