Preferential Parasitism Of Native Oyster Ostrea Edulis Over Non-Native Magallana Gigas By A Polydorid Worm, A. J. Lemasson, A. M. Knights May 2019

Preferential Parasitism Of Native Oyster Ostrea Edulis Over Non-Native Magallana Gigas By A Polydorid Worm, A. J. Lemasson, A. M. Knights

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Parasites are important structural components of marine communities that can affect organism fitness and ecological interactions, and the provision of ecosystem services. Here, we investigate the host association of Polydora ciliata with two ecologically and economically important oyster species (Ostrea edulis, Magallana gigas) and examine its impacts on two fitness aspects: condition and shell strength. Our results provide strong inferential evidence of host specificity by P. ciliata with a tendency towards infestation of the native O. edulis over the introduced M. gigas. Evidence suggests increasing prevalence of parasitism with organismal age, but no clear indication that parasitism leads to reduced …

The rise of palm oil as the world's most consumed vegetable oil has coincided with exponential growth in palm oil research activity. Bibliometric analysis of research outputs reveals a distinct imbalance in the type of research being undertaken, notably a disproportionate focus on biofuel and engineering topics. Recognizing the expansion of oil palm agriculture across the tropics and the increasing awareness of environmental, social, and economic impacts, we seek to reorientate the existing research agenda toward one that addresses the most fundamental and urgent questions defined by the palm oil stakeholder community. Following consultation with 659 stakeholders from 38 countries, …

Growth In Agricultural Productivity And Its Components In Bangladeshi Regions (1987–2009): An Application Of Bootstrapped Data Envelopment Analysis (Dea), M Bagchi, S Rahman, Y Shunbo

Plymouth Business School

The present study applies a bootstrapped data envelopment analysis (DEA) procedure to compute bias-corrected measures of agricultural total factor productivity (TFP) change and its components (technical change and technical efficiency change) using a panel data of 19 regions of Bangladesh covering a 23-year period (1987–2009), thereby overcoming the limitation of the lack of statistical inference of the conventional non-parametric DEA. Results revealed that overall productivity grew at a modest rate of 0.03%, mainly powered by technological progress at 0.03% and a negligible decline in technical efficiency at 0.004% with large disparities amongst regions. Six regions in the middle order shifted …

ABSTRACT We report the complete genome sequence of a colistin-resistant strain of uropathogenic Escherichia coli, isolated in January 2013 at King Abdulaziz Medical City (KAMC), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The isolate (named SA186) was sequence type 131 (ST131) and belonged to serotype O25b-H4 and clade B (fimH22).

The Sensitive, Open Creator, D Bridges, H Schendan

School of Psychology

Identifying a creative personality has been challenging. Sensitivity was implicated in creativity in early studies but more recently defined as a biologically-based personality dimension (i.e., temperament). In this paper we aim to establish relationships between temperament, personality and creative potential and achievement. This laboratory study with a large diverse sample used multiple recently established sensitivity and creativity measures while controlling negative-affect and Big-Five personality traits. Only sensitivity and openness correlate positively with three creativity measures and independently predict two (achievement, ideation). Openness predicts creative products and achievement more strongly as sensitivity rises above average, and conversely. Sensitivity and openness primarily …

Sensitive Individuals Are More Creative, D Bridges, He Schendan May 2019

Sensitive Individuals Are More Creative, D Bridges, He Schendan

School of Psychology

Individual differences in cognition, affect, and personality have been explored extensively as factors in creativity, but pinpointing the exact factors has remained elusive. This review proposes that a major gap has been lack of research on the relation between creativity and temperament, which captures the biologically-based core of personality, especially studies on sensitive temperament. Sensitivity has been associated with creativity anecdotally and in early work but rarely investigated recently, particularly using recent more precise definitions of sensitivity and state-of-the-art sensitivity and creativity assessments, nor has the relationship between creativity and cognitive processes that should reflect sensitive neural processing been investigated. …

Platooning Control For Heterogeneous Sailboats Based On Constant Time Headway, C Viel, U Vautier, J Wan, L Jaulin

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This paper addresses the problem of platooning control for a fleet of heterogeneous sailboats. The platooning maintains a constant time headway (CTH) between sailboats following a circular path, a complex problem for sailboats due to the influence of wind direction. First, the desired acceleration based on the CTH and the sailboat velocity needed to converge to the platooning is defined. Second, a control of sailboat orientation to manage the sailboat acceleration is proposed. The proposed platooning strategy adapts to the specific characteristics of sailboats, which are different from other motorized marine vehicles. Two tack strategies can be used for the …

Terrestrial fungi play critical roles in nutrient cycling and food webs and can shape macroorganism communities as parasites and mutualists. Although estimates for the number of fungal species on the planet range from 1.5 to over 5 million, likely fewer than 10% of fungi have been identified so far.

TAaCT is a project that examines contemporary medical training by attending to the long history of devices that have been used to train medical practitioners, which include texts, atlases, models and a range of audio-visual apparatus. The object of TAaCT is to include reflective thinking about how technologies of representation are used to engage directly with human feeling, but which a prevailing focus on technological progress toward realistic simulation has tended to marginalise.

A Pinch Of Salt: Response Of Coastal Grassland Plants To Simulated Seawater Inundation Treatments, Mick E. Hanley, Shareen K.D. Sanders, Hannah Marie Stanton, Richard A. Billington, Rich Boden

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Background and Aims The combination of rising sea levels and increased storm frequency and intensity is predicted to increase the severity of oceanic storm surge events and the impact of flooding on coastal ecosystems globally. Understanding how plant communities respond to this threat necessitates experiments involving plant immersion in saline water, but logistical issues and natural variation in seawater composition mean that pure NaCl solutions or marine aquarium salts (MS) are widely used. Nonetheless, their comparative impact on plant ecophysiology, and thus relevance to understanding real-world flooding scenarios, is unknown. Methods In the first of two experiments, we examined how …
