Children’S Perception Of Visual And Auditory Ambiguity And Its Link To Executive Functions And Creativity, M Taranu, Mc Wimmer, J Ross, D Farkas, Et Al
School of Psychology
The phenomenon of perceptual bistability provides insights into aspects of perceptual processing not normally accessible to everyday experience. However, most experiments have been conducted in adults, and it is not clear to what extent key aspects of perceptual switching change through development. The current research examined the ability of 6-, 8-, and 10-year-old children (N = 66) to switch between competing percepts of ambiguous visual and auditory stimuli and links between switching rate, executive functions, and creativity. The numbers of switches participants reported in two visual tasks (ambiguous figure and ambiguous structure from motion) and two auditory tasks (verbal transformation …

Measuring Fluoride In Human Saliva And Water, K Muhammad, S Mohammed, K Mohammadamin, V Kuri
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Background and objective: Fluoride is used to prevent dental caries, and it has been one of the most effective and widespread agents. Fluoride level has been shown in saliva, plaque, and oral soft tissues after use of fluoridated toothpaste that persists at potentially active concentrations for hours. This study aimed to evaluate how fluoride in toothpaste intake can affect the salivary fluoride and test fluoride in tap water in the different places of Erbil city. Methods: Forty five volunteers were examined. In the morning after overnight fasting before brushing teeth, the saliva of the subjects (healthy non-smoker adults) was taken …
Biosynthesis Of Ambrein In Ambergris: Evidence From Isotopic Data And Identification Of Possible Intermediates, Steven J. Rowland, Paul A. Sutton, George A. Wolff
Biosynthesis Of Ambrein In Ambergris: Evidence From Isotopic Data And Identification Of Possible Intermediates, Steven J. Rowland, Paul A. Sutton, George A. Wolff
More Faculty of Science and Engineering Research
Ambrein is found in ambergris, a coprolith occurring in the rectum of the sperm whale. In vitro, ambrein is produced by enzymatic cyclisation of squalene, via a monocyclic intermediate. However, little is known of the in vivo process. In order to find evidence for the reaction in vivo, a comparison was made of the δ13C relative isotopic ratios of ambrein in ambergris with those of co-occurring sterols. A statistically significant difference was noted. This suggests that ambrein originates via a different biosynthetic mechanism from that of the sterols. Examination of the minor constituents of a hydrogenolysed extract of ambergris revealed …
From Postmodernism To Posthumanism - The Photographed Animal, C Baker
From Postmodernism To Posthumanism - The Photographed Animal, C Baker
School of Art, Design and Architecture
This essay was inspired by the growing critical and artistic attention currently afforded to the subject of the nonhuman animal within Posthumanism and a curiosity to explore photographic practices that could potentially contribute to this endeavour. An exploration of Postmodernist art practice has revealed a dramatic shift in approach to the nonhuman animal subject; essentially characterised as a move from a sceptical, emotionally-distanced, theoretically-grounded range of practices to those that are emotionally-engaged, affective and ethically responsive. This is not to suggest that this characterises all Posthumanist photographic practices; a number of critical writers ably theorise about global networks, nonhuman photography, …

These can be put into the hands of construction stakeholders to help meet Europe’s energy efficiency targets, standards for constructing and retrofitting buildings, and related policy ambitions. This paper focuses on the automated standard-based life cycle quality inspections for precast concrete structural building elements that can be enhanced by leveraging a range of different technologies. Particular attention is placed on the use of embedded sensors in the precast concrete structural building elements as a tool to support quality assurance of …
Investigating Changes In The Chemical Composition Of Wood Upon Digestion By Wood-Boring Bivalves Of The Sub-Family Xylophagaidae, And Potential Implications For Marine Biogeochemical Cycles, Briony Cope
The Plymouth Student Scientist
The sub-family of molluscs Xylophagaidae are the primary degraders of wood in the oceans. They are part of an opportunistic ecosystem, which survives on temporary falls of large organic matter, such as carcasses and wood debris. After digesting the wood with the help of symbiotic bacteria, Xylophagaidae excrete a pulp like substance, which lines the walls of their burrows. The nutrients in the broken down wood becomes accessible to other forms of life, and growing populations create anoxic environments, which encourage chemoautotrophic activity. This research aims to identify the role that Xylopohagaidae play in the biogeochemical cycles of certain elements, …
Species Distribution Model Of Cetaceans In Relation To Environmental Factors At Two Locations In The North Atlantic, Laura Adams
Species Distribution Model Of Cetaceans In Relation To Environmental Factors At Two Locations In The North Atlantic, Laura Adams
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Cetaceans in the North Atlantic are under threat from the increasing pressure and demand placed on the sea by humans. In order to conserve cetacean populations, legislative acts such as the EC Habitats Directive (Council Directive 92/43/EEC) are calling for protected areas to be established. Species distribution models have been used in this study as a tool to outline habitat preference of cetaceans in the Celtic Sea and eastern North Atlantic, helping to determine the boundaries for protected areas. Remotely-sensed environmental data was analysed against visual boat survey data using boosted regression tree modelling. A review of the literature emphasised …
The Surface Sediment Carbon Content Of A North Norfolk Saltmarsh, Robert Van Ree
The Surface Sediment Carbon Content Of A North Norfolk Saltmarsh, Robert Van Ree
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Carbon sequestration is an important aspect of mitigating climate change and its detrimental environmental and economic effects. Vegetative ecosystems such as rainforests are often praised for their ability to sequester carbon through photosynthesis, however more efficient systems for sequestering carbon such as saltmarshes are often overlooked. Carbon storage was investigated in the developing salt marsh habitats of Holkham Bay, part of the Holkham National Nature Reserve in Norfolk, England between 31/07/2017 and 03/08/2017. This was done to assess the quantity of carbon that may be lost to rising sea levels associated with climate change and be released as CO2, which …
Occupancy Patterns Of Sea Birds In Relation To Oceanographic Conditions At Sites On The Llŷn Peninsula, Emily Goodman
Occupancy Patterns Of Sea Birds In Relation To Oceanographic Conditions At Sites On The Llŷn Peninsula, Emily Goodman
The Plymouth Student Scientist
With the current increase in the emergence of offshore renewable energy installations it is becoming increasingly important to monitor and study seabird populations. In order to understand the potential impacts of these installations we must first understand the spatial and temporal factors affecting seabirds site usage which may then inform future monitoring and management. In this study a series of shore based surveys were carried out to assess the occupancy patterns of seabirds in relation to oceanographic conditions at three sites along the Llŷn peninsula. One site, named Bardsey Sound is a proposed site for tidal energy extraction due to …

There is an urgent need to ‘get creative’ with the way we tackle social and nutritional inequalities. The Food as a Lifestyle Motivator (FLM) project has explored the use of creative participatory approaches to engage ‘harder to reach’ communities in dialogues to improve their well-being and life skills. Preliminary findings have confirmed that food can be a powerful catalyst for social inclusion with the potential to empower ‘marginalised’ individuals. Part of this exploratory study has involved two participatory food events (November 2015 and November 2016) run in a local day centre for drug and alcohol rehabilitation. The aim of these …

Fathers, Sons, And Monsters: Rousseau, Blake, And Mary Shelley, Joshua Schouten De Jel
Fathers, Sons, And Monsters: Rousseau, Blake, And Mary Shelley, Joshua Schouten De Jel
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Through their reading of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, William Blake, and Mary Shelley arrive at a similar formula for their respective texts: the mismanagement, neglect, and eventual abandonment of children by their fathers catalyses the development of monstrous progeny in Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818/31), Blake’s Tiriel (1789), The Book of Urizen (1794), and The Four Zoas (1795–1804). In particular, both Blake and Shelley pick up on Rousseau’s concerns about the mishandling of children’s bodies as part of contemporary nursing practices in Émile, as well as the way in which the vision of a self-led educational programme is continually undermined by the fear of …

Biocide Resistance And Transmission Of Clostridium Difficile Spores Spiked Onto Clinical Surfaces From An American Health Care Facility, Calie Dyer, Lee P. Hutt, Robert Burky, Lovleen Tina Joshi
School of Biomedical Sciences
Clostridium difficile is the primary cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea globally. In unfavourable environments the organism produces highly resistant spores which can survive microbicidal insult. Our previous research determined the ability of C. difficile spores to adhere to clinical surfaces; finding that spores had marked different hydrophobic properties and adherence ability. Investigation into the effect of the microbicide sodium dichloroisocyanurate on C. difficile spore transmission revealed that sub-lethal concentrations increased spore adherence without reducing viability. The present study examined the ability of spores to transmit across clinical surfaces and their response to an in-use disinfection concentration of 1,000-ppm of chlorine-releasing agent …

This study aimed to assess the ecotoxicological effects of the interaction of fullerene (C60) and benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) on the marine mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis. The uptake of nC60, B[a]P and mixtures of nC60 and B[a]P into tissues was confirmed by Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC–MS), Liquid Chromatography–High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (LC–HRMS) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP–MS). Biomarkers of DNA damage as well as proteomics analysis were applied to unravel the interactive effect of B[a]P and C60. Antagonistic responses were observed at the genotoxic and proteomic level. Differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were only identified in the B[a]P single exposure and the …

Soft Manipulator Robot For Selective Tomato Harvesting, A Mohamed, J Shaw-Sutton, Bm Green, W Andrews, Et Al
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
The harvesting of soft fruits and vegetables is a labour-intensive process, often representing more than 50% of the total costs for the producer. In this paper, a harvesting robot is proposed for tomato picking. The robotic solution is developed to address the needs of tomato producers in the Shanghai region in China, one that faces population growth and therefore a higher demand on food supply. The robotic system presented consists of a variable-stiffness manipulator arm, a soft robot gripper, and different types of sensors that are used to identify and locate in 3D and pick the tomatoes. The implemented variable …

Reimagining Applied Practices: A Case Study On The Potential Partnership Between Applied Practices And Education For Sustainable Development, Alex Cahill, Paul Warwick
Reimagining Applied Practices: A Case Study On The Potential Partnership Between Applied Practices And Education For Sustainable Development, Alex Cahill, Paul Warwick
School of Art, Design and Architecture
This case study tells the story of two educators at the University of Plymouth (United Kingdom) who reconsidered the fundamental purpose of their curriculum in light of the United Nations Sustainable Development agenda. This resulted in the development of a new community-engaged applied practice module during the final year of the Theatre and Performance degree. Reflection on their innovation process reveals that students engaged in their community benefit from making direct links in the curricula to locally-relevant sustainable development goals. However, it also highlights the interplay of other external forces influencing curriculum design, such as notions of teaching excellence becoming …

Could Greater Time Spent Displaying Waking Inactivity In The Home Environment Be A Marker For A Depression-Like State In The Domestic Dog?, Nd Harvey, A Moesta, S Kappel, C Wongsaengchan, Et Al
School of Psychology
Dogs exposed to aversive events can become inactive and unresponsive and are commonly referred to as being “depressed”, but this association remains to be tested. We investigated whether shelter dogs spending greater time inactive “awake but motionless” (ABM) in their home-pen show anhedonia (the core reduction of pleasure reported in depression), as tested by reduced interest in, and consumption of, palatable food (KongTM test). We also explored whether dogs being qualitatively perceived by experts as disinterested in the food would spend greater time ABM (experts blind to actual inactivity levels). Following sample size estimations and qualitative behaviour analysis (n = …
