A Socio-Economic And Ecological Approach To Informing Sustainable Marine Management In Jersey, Channel Islands, Samantha Robyn Blampied Jan 2022

A Socio-Economic And Ecological Approach To Informing Sustainable Marine Management In Jersey, Channel Islands, Samantha Robyn Blampied

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Marine ecosystems support human life in multi-faceted ways and are depended on for food and income by many coastal communities. However, marine habitats are being altered by anthropogenic pressures, influencing the diversity and distribution of species, including species that are relied upon by commercial fisheries. Destructive fishing practices such as dredging and trawling can have adverse impacts on the seabed and associated species through the degradation and fragmentation of benthic habitats. Spatial management of marine areas is required to mitigate impacts, with Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) being advocated as tools that can not only protect and restore biodiversity but also …

A Phenotypic And Genomic Investigation Of The Identity And Variation In The European Dark Bee (Apis Mellifera Mellifera), Victoria G Buswell

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Apis mellifera (the Western honey bee) is a predominantly human managed pollinator consisting of different evolutionary lineages each containing a number of subspecies. Apis mellifera is threatened by various factors for example, parasites, viruses and pesticide use. The native subspecies of the British Isles Apis mellifera mellifera is additionally threatened by introgression resulting from the importation of foreign subspecies perceived to have more desirable characteristics. This thesis investigates the integrity of Apis mellifera mellifera in the UK and how that can be assessed. Initially, introgression levels over time in a conservation program were assessed. This revealed temporal decreases in introgression, …

Can You See Me, Or Can You Smell Me? An Investigation Into Information Transfer In Betta Splendens, Alex Daniel Lynch Jan 2022

Can You See Me, Or Can You Smell Me? An Investigation Into Information Transfer In Betta Splendens, Alex Daniel Lynch

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Visual communication in Betta splendens has been studied in great detail. Chemical information transfer in this species has been studied less, and the interaction between chemical and visual information transfer less still. Betta may have a need for chemical information transfer; a need which is often neglected when housing this species in isolation from conspecifics. There is evidence that many fish species communicate using visual signals and spy on one another using chemical cues. Which type of information transfer is important and how they interact in which social context is less clear. Eavesdropping and mate choice has been studied extensively …

Investigating The Microbiota Associated With Maerl Beds Located In The Fal Estuary, Cornwall, Anthony Scales Jan 2022

Investigating The Microbiota Associated With Maerl Beds Located In The Fal Estuary, Cornwall, Anthony Scales

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The microbiota of maerl has the potential to contain diverse communities of bacteria which are thought to aid in maintaining maerl health and potentially be a driving factor in the settlement and development of ecological and economical important bi-valve species. However, little is currently known regarding the composition and structure of these communities, leading to uncertainty of their importance and their direct association to maerl beds. Using 16s amplicon sequencing analysis, the bacterial community composition associated with live and dead maerl (Phymatolithon calcareum) has been examined and compared to the communities associated with those of the surrounding environment - adjacent …

A Step Towards Automating Real-Time Collection Of Ecological Data On Observational Platforms : A Pilot Study On Deep-Sea Benthic Species Syringammina Fragilissima, Erin Browne Jan 2022

A Step Towards Automating Real-Time Collection Of Ecological Data On Observational Platforms : A Pilot Study On Deep-Sea Benthic Species Syringammina Fragilissima, Erin Browne

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Despite current efforts to study deep-sea life, there is a dependency on technological advancements to asses it at a scale and pace required to inform effective management and conservation. Data collection platforms, such as Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) are routinely applied to studying the deep sea due to their ability to collect large image-based datasets. Thus, data collection in the deep sea is becoming less of a problem in comparison to data interpretation, where terabytes of video data is collected during expeditions and manual interpretation of this is currently the standard procedure. Deep learning (DL), a sub-field of artificial intelligence …

Ecological Studies Of The South Atlantic Deep Sea To Inform Sustainable Management, Amelia Bridges Jan 2022

Ecological Studies Of The South Atlantic Deep Sea To Inform Sustainable Management, Amelia Bridges

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Although deep-sea science continues to progress, the southern hemisphere represents a vast and yet understudied area, and the South Atlantic is no exception to this. However, as with other ocean basins, blue growth and the potential for expansion of new and emerging industries mean that information is required to characterise the ecology of the basin to inform sustainable management. Furthermore, novel tools will be required to assist in translating ecological knowledge into usable products that can facilitate marine spatial planning. The aims of this thesis were to contribute to our understanding of the benthic ecology of seamount and oceanic island …

An Interdisciplinary Assessment Of The Mud Crab Scylla Serrata As A Sustainable Livelihood Resource In Southwest India, Elina Apine Jan 2022

An Interdisciplinary Assessment Of The Mud Crab Scylla Serrata As A Sustainable Livelihood Resource In Southwest India, Elina Apine

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Fishing and aquaculture are important income-generating activities for coastal communities in India. However, the challenges of climate change and overexploitation have prompted the exploration of new, alternative, sustainable, target species that previously have received little attention. This thesis considers the potential of the mud crab Scylla serrata as a sustainable livelihood resource for local communities in southwest India where currently crab fishing and, particularly, farming is less common compared to southeast India. As fisheries and aquaculture are inherently complex social-ecological systems affected both by biological and socio-economic factors, this thesis has taken an interdisciplinary approach to identify the main barriers …

A 15-Year Partnership Between Uk Coastal Scientists And The International Beach Lifeguard Community, Tim Scott, Gerd Masselink, Christopher Stokes, Tim Poate, Adam Wooler, Steve Instance Jan 2022

A 15-Year Partnership Between Uk Coastal Scientists And The International Beach Lifeguard Community, Tim Scott, Gerd Masselink, Christopher Stokes, Tim Poate, Adam Wooler, Steve Instance

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Drowning is a leading cause of unintentional fatalities around the world, yet on beaches is often preventable through public education campaigns and intervention activities from lifeguards. In 2006, the UK beach lifeguarding community approached the Coastal Processes Research Group (CPRG) at University of Plymouth, UK, with a need to better understand the key hazards on UK beaches and how to foresee and manage the associated risks. In some cases there simply was not sufficient scientifically-robust understanding of certain hazards (for example rip currents) available for lifeguard managers to make objective, data-driven decisions on how to manage them. This paper documents …

The Potential Impact Of Macroalgal Generated Hydrogen Peroxide Levels On Co-Occurring Organism In Rock Pools, Agapery Yoane Pattinasarany Jan 2022

The Potential Impact Of Macroalgal Generated Hydrogen Peroxide Levels On Co-Occurring Organism In Rock Pools, Agapery Yoane Pattinasarany

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Abstract Macroalgae have been identified as a potential source of ROS (e.g., hydrogen peroxide) in some rock pools and enclosed habitats; the accumulation of ROS may be harmful to other organisms. Although some studies have found vulnerability to these ROS, there has been little research on the potential impact of photosynthesis-induced oxidative stress on organisms living in rock pools. The aims of this study were to investigate the levels of hydrogen peroxide produced by macroalgae and to assess the effect of similar levels of H2O2 on a rock-pool resident, the snakelocks anemone. The objective of the first experimental chapter was …

Past, Present And Future Of Conservative Oxygen Therapy In Critical Care, Daniel Martin, David Harrison, Paul Mouncey, B. Ronan O'Driscoll, Mike Grocott, Lorna Miller, Doug Gould, Alvin Richards-Belle, Kathryn Rowan

Peninsula Medical School

Conservative oxygen therapy (COT) is the administration lower levels of supplemental oxygen than usual in order to tolerate a lower level of arterial oxygenation (either the partial pressure (PaO2) or haemoglobin saturation (SaO2)) than normal. Its purpose is to reduce a patient’s overall exposure to additional oxygen in order to minimise the risk of oxyen toxicity.1 This approach to oxygen therapy has also been called permissive hypoxaemia (PH) and the terms are frequently used interchangeably; here, we refer to all efforts to reduce supplemental oxygen administration or arterial oxygenation as COT. Studies have been conducted across a wide range of …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Marine renewable energy developments (e.g. offshore wind, wave, and tidal) are an increasing feature within the marine environment. It is therefore important to understand the potential impacts of such developments on seabirds that use these environments. Land-based vantage point (VP) surveys are widely used to collect data for environmental impact assessments (EIAs) within tidal stream energy sites. However, tidal stream environments are highly dynamic and present challenges when conducting VP surveys, for example there can be varying detectability of seabirds due to near-surface turbulence. In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the use of uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) …

Intraspecific Variability In Thermal Tolerance Across Environmental Temperature Gradients In The Intertidal Periwinkle Littorina Saxatilis, Christopher Patrick Dwane Jan 2022

Intraspecific Variability In Thermal Tolerance Across Environmental Temperature Gradients In The Intertidal Periwinkle Littorina Saxatilis, Christopher Patrick Dwane

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Comparisons of thermal tolerance limits of organisms living across environmental temperature gradients represent a valuable means by which to study physiological adaptation. Intertidal organisms are subject to variation in levels of thermal stress both across latitude and shore height. However, our current understanding of how this variation relates to thermal adaptation is largely based on comparisons between species, and we lack a clear picture of the degree to which different populations from the same species display local adaptation along these temperature gradients. In this thesis, I investigate the extent and nature of intraspecific local adaptation of thermal tolerance across shore …

Non-Invasive Transcranial Ultrasound Stimulation For Neuromodulation, G. Darmani, T. O. Bergmann, Pauly K Butts, C. F. Caskey, Lecea L De, A. Fomenko, E. Fouragnan, W. Legon, K. R. Murphy, T. Nandi, M. A. Phipps, G. Pinton, H. Ramezanpour, J. Sallet, S. N. Yaakub, S. S. Yoo, R. Chen

School of Psychology

Transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) holds great potential as a tool to alter neural circuits non-invasively in both animals and humans. In contrast to established non-invasive brain stimulation methods, ultrasonic waves can be focused on both cortical and deep brain targets with the unprecedented spatial resolution as small as a few cubic millimeters. This focusing allows exclusive targeting of small subcortical structures, previously accessible only by invasive deep brain stimulation devices. The neuromodulatory effects of TUS are likely derived from the kinetic interaction of the ultrasound waves with neuronal membranes and their constitutive mechanosensitive ion channels, to produce short term and …

A Review Of Thermal Impact Of Surface Acoustic Waves On Microlitre Droplets In Medical Applications, Mubbashar Mehmood, Umar F. Khan, Ali O.M. Maka, Javed Akhter, Tariq Nawaz Chaudhary, Faisal Masood, Sameer Ahmad Hasan, Yeaw Chu Lee Jan 2022

A Review Of Thermal Impact Of Surface Acoustic Waves On Microlitre Droplets In Medical Applications, Mubbashar Mehmood, Umar F. Khan, Ali O.M. Maka, Javed Akhter, Tariq Nawaz Chaudhary, Faisal Masood, Sameer Ahmad Hasan, Yeaw Chu Lee

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The surface acoustic waves (SAW) propagate inside the microdroplets resulting in kinetic and thermal impacts. The kinetic drives fluid particles inside the droplet while thermal impact increases the liquid’s temperature. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the research investigations related to internal kinetics and heating inside the microdroplet caused by the acoustic waves. The main factors that affect the kinetics and convection heat transfer are the piezoelectric materials, shape of the interdigital transducer (IDT) and mode of acoustic waves. Internal streaming (kinetic) leads to particle mixing, particle manipulation, cell sorting, cell patterning, cell separation, measuring the concentration of immunoglobulin …

Developed Performance Of Rgo/P-Si Schottky Junction Solar Cells, Ahmed M. Suhail, Mazin Ahmed Abed, Samer Mahmmod Ahmed, Israa M.S. Al-Kadmy, Hiyam Altaii, Genhua Pan

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Graphene in combination with Si has been extensively used to prepare efficient and stable p-graphene/n-Si Schottky junction solar cells. In contrast, there is a difficulty in including graphene within the fabrication process of efficient and stable n-graphene/p-Si Schottky junction solar cells. The reason for this is that there is a challenge in achieving an effective and stable n-doping process for graphene or rGO due to the ambient environment. In this work, a novel approach is introduced for preparing more efficient, stable, larger and simpler n-rGO/p-Si Schottky junction solar cells. The n-rGO rather than graphene, which has been successfully developed using …

Novel Signalling Pathways Resolving The Inflammatory Response During Peripheral Nerve Regeneration, Patricia Kate Woodley Jan 2022

Novel Signalling Pathways Resolving The Inflammatory Response During Peripheral Nerve Regeneration, Patricia Kate Woodley

Peninsula Medical School Theses

Introduction. The peripheral nervous system has the remarkable capacity to regenerate and restore function following damage or disease. Instrumental in this regenerative process are macrophages, Schwann cells and the production of inflammatory cytokines. The production of inflammatory cytokines from macrophages and Schwann cells needs to be tightly regulated to ensure efficient regeneration and to prevent chronic inflammation. Currently there is limited knowledge regarding which signalling pathways act to control both the inflammatory response and macrophage efflux that allows tissue homeostasis to resume within the peripheral nerves. This thesis aims to investigate the expression pattern and distinct function of VIP and …

In this work, statistical learning approaches are used to detect biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases (NDs). NDs are becoming increasingly prevalent as populations age, making understanding of disease and identification of biomarkers progressively important for facilitating early diagnosis and the screening of individuals for clinical trials. Advancements in gene expression profiling has enabled the exploration of disease biomarkers at an unprecedented scale. The work presented here demonstrates the value of gene expression data in understanding the underlying processes and detection of biomarkers of NDs. The value of novel approaches to previously collected -omics data is shown and it is demonstrated that …

Delayed Gastric Emptying In Ivor Lewis Gastro-Oesophagectomy, Ji Chung Tham Jan 2022

Delayed Gastric Emptying In Ivor Lewis Gastro-Oesophagectomy, Ji Chung Tham

Peninsula Medical School Theses

Delayed gastric emptying(DGE) affects 17.5% of Ivor Lewis Gastro-oesophagectomy(ILGO) patients in my unit. DGE diagnosis is varied globally due to definition subjectivity. Definition standardisation along with a diagnostic algorithm will assist clinicians in obtaining accurate diagnoses. Additionally, DGE pathophysiology is unknown and understanding it will guide treatment. 10 patients with and without DGE from our ILGO database between 1/12/2011 to 30/06/2017 had their chest X-ray and nasogastric tube(NG) algorithm from our enhance recovery protocol assessed. DGE was considered if net NG output and/or conduit size was >50% with its performance assessed. To assess treatment, those patients were divided into: patients …

Graphene Based Electrochemical Biosensors For The Detection Of Blood Biomarkers Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Jagriti Sethi Jan 2022

Graphene Based Electrochemical Biosensors For The Detection Of Blood Biomarkers Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Jagriti Sethi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects millions of people around the world with no available treatments to cure, reverse or even slow down the disease progression. Detection of AD in the early stages, before the massive neuronal loss, is key to developing disease-modifying treatments and preventive strategies. The current AD diagnosis is largely based on evaluation tests such as Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), imaging techniques such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Positron Emission Tomography (PET), and postmortem autopsies. It is expensive and only available at the later/severe stages when the brain of the patient is already damaged …

Flexible Goal-Directed Manipulation Of Representations: Computational Models Of Healthy And Pathological Human Cognition, Giovanni Granato Jan 2022

Flexible Goal-Directed Manipulation Of Representations: Computational Models Of Healthy And Pathological Human Cognition, Giovanni Granato

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The brain is able to manipulate itself, adapting its internal world in a changing environment. In particular it continuously manipulates its representations to achieve goals. This competence is supported by many neurocognitive high-order processes that interact during the performance of a goal-directed behaviour (e.g. attention processes, executive functions, motivational systems). Overall, adult humans often face a new problem trough a change of the `perceptual point of view' (i.e. a representational change), rather then an extended research of the correct action to perform. On the other hand, infants and children contemporary develop motor competence and task-directed perceptual representations (e.g. categorical perception). …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Marine ecosystems have been used, impacted by, and managed by human populations for millennia. As ecosystem degradation has been a common outcome of these activities, marine management increasingly considers ecosystem restoration. Currently, there is no coherent data recording format or framework for marine restoration projects. As a result, data are inconsistently recorded and it is difficult to universally track progress, assess restoration's global effectiveness, reduce reporting bias, collect a holistic suite of metrics, and share information. Barriers to developing a unified system for reporting marine restoration outcomes include: reaching agreement on a framework that meets the needs of all users, …

Synthetic Microplastic Abundance And Composition Along A Longitudinal Gradient Traversing The Subtropical Gyre In The North Atlantic Ocean, Winnie Courtene-Jones, Simon Van Gennip, Juliette Penicaud, Emily Penn, Richard C. Thompson Jan 2022

Synthetic Microplastic Abundance And Composition Along A Longitudinal Gradient Traversing The Subtropical Gyre In The North Atlantic Ocean, Winnie Courtene-Jones, Simon Van Gennip, Juliette Penicaud, Emily Penn, Richard C. Thompson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Plastic pollution has been reported in the North Atlantic Ocean since the 1970s, yet limited data over subsequent decades pose challenges when assessing spatio-temporal trends in relation to global leakages and intervention strategies. This study quantified microplastics within the upper ocean along a longitudinal transect of the North Atlantic and its subtropical gyre. Microplastics were sampled from surface and subsurface (−25 m) water using a manta trawl and NIKSIN bottle respectively. The surface water polymer community varied significantly between geographic positions (‘inshore’, ‘gyre’, ‘open ocean’), and was significantly influenced by fragment quantity. Compared to other positions, the North Atlantic gyre …

Fully Probabilistic Reliability And Resilience Analysis Of Coastal Structures Based On Damage Evolution Simulation, D Malliouri, N Martzikos, V Tsoukala

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

An integrated methodology is presented to ensure coastal structures’ resilience to extreme wave conditions i.e. their ability to withstand further wave actions without reaching their ultimate limit state. Specifically, a fully probabilistic reliability analysis of a rubble mound breakwater is performed here, in combination with a prediction analysis of the expected time of the structure’s maintenance. The methodology combines information on the joint probability density function of significant wave height, spectral peak wave period, and storms’ duration and calculates the probability of occurrence of different levels of damage in the structure’s lifetime via the use of a fully probabilistic reliability …
