This study presents a detailed geomorphological and geochronological analysis of a marine terrace staircase developed into the Peniche Peninsula (Portugal), a rocky headland of Jurassic carbonate bedrock located in the central sector of the Western Iberian passive margin. The marine terrace levels are described morphologically and sedimentologically, but also dated using ESR and U-Series methodologies. The marine terrace staircase comprises six emerged levels ranging from 4 m (above mean sea level, asl) (Tm6) to 24–28 m asl (Tm1), inset into a summit wave-cut platform at 29–45 m asl (Pm). The marine terrace sediments are composed of rounded boulders to cobbles …

Peninsula Medical School
Introduction: The professional support (including remediation) of practising doctors has not been widely researched, and there have been no studies to date that have implemented evidence-based recommendations about support and remediation in the medical workplace. Our goal was to bridge the gap between research and practice in respect of optimising the delivery of professional support programmes for doctors in their workplace. Methods: We used a participatory-action research (PAR) approach to implement recommendations from a previous study, RESTORE 1, in five UK sites: two hospitals, two professional support units and a professional support body. Informed by observations and interviews, we conducted a …

The Xeremies Of The Banda Municipal De Barcelona: From The Symphonic Turn Of The Cobla To The Invention Of The Barítona, Nuria Bonet, Albert Fontelles-Ramonet
School of Art, Design and Architecture
During the early twentieth century, Catalonia experienced a period of great cultural and musical development through the Noucentisme movement, which aimed to elevate its national culture to a symbol of high art. The xeremies (shawms) of the cobla ensemble, which played the sardana genre, were integrated into symphonic and chamber repertoire. This required the technical improvement of the tible (treble) and tenora (tenor) xeremies, but also encouraged the invention of new instruments in the shawm family. The barítona (baritone shawm) was premiered in 1930 by the Banda Municipal de Barcelona and represents a milestone in Catalan music in the tumultuous …

Young Carers In Early Childhood - Exploring Experience With The Power Threat Meaning Framework, Carly Ellicott, Alyson Norman, Helen Lloyd, Felicity Dewsbery, Sarah Jones, Shoshana Jones
School of Psychology
This paper presents the first exploration of young carers in early childhood (YCEC), in the context of whole family support, through the application of the Power Threat Meaning Framework (PTMF). Existing contributions to young carer research have shaped social policy, legislation, and practice concerned with whole family approaches to the identification, assessment, and support for young carers globally. To date, the literature has predominantly focused on young carers in middle childhood to young adulthood, contributing to socially constructed Eurocentric ideologies of who young carers are likely to be. As such, YCEC remain disempowered in broader young carer and family science …
From Simulation To Reality: Experimental Analysis Of A Quantum Entanglement Simulation With Slime Molds (Physarum Polycephalum) As Bioelectronic Components, Eduardo Miranda
School of Art, Design and Architecture
This study investigates whether it is possible to simulate quantum entanglement with theoretical memristor models, physical memristors (from Knowm Inc.) and slime molds Physarum polycephalum as bioelectric components. While the simulation with theoretical memristor models has been demonstrated in the literature, real-world experiments with electric and bioelectric components had not been done so far. Our analysis focused on identifying hysteresis curves in the voltage-current (I-V) relationship, a characteristic signature of memristive devices. Although the physical memristor produced I-V diagrams that resembled more or less hysteresis curves, the small parasitic capacitance introduced significant problems for the planned entanglement simulation. In case …
Rescue Epilepsy Medication And Training: A Comparison Between Midazolam Use, Guidelines, Clinical Practice, And Possibilities In The Uk And Norway, Rohit Shankar
Peninsula Medical School
Objectives: Status epilepticus (SE) is a prolonged epileptic seizure carrying significant risk of long-term disability and death. Rescue therapies are prescribedfor prehospital administration to terminate SE. This study compared prescribingpractices of rescue therapies of midazolam in the UK and Norway. Methods: A cross-sectional, online, 21-item Likert-style survey was administeredto epilepsy professionals in the UK circulated via ILAE/ESNA and in Norway viaILAE/Epilepsinet using a non-discriminatory exponential snowballing techniqueleading to non-probability sampling. Data were collected anonymously and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Mann–Whitney, Chi-square, and Fisher's exact tests. Significance was accepted at p<0.05.Results: All 86 UK and 53 Norway respondents identified buccal midazolam as the first-line rescue medication choice in the community for prolonged and/or generalized tonic–clonic seizures. Norwegian respondents had significantly more experience in epilepsy-related work (p=0.002), were more likely to have a larger caseload on buccal midazolam (p<0.001), prescribed higher midazolam doses (p<0.001), and provided training yearly (p<0.001). UK respondents were more likely to delegate rescue medication prescribing to primary care (p=0.006) and reviewed emergency management plans more frequently (p=0.006). There was an inter-country difference in the period of midazolam non-use that respondents required before withdrawing from treatment plans (p<0.001). Concern about inappropriate use of buccal midazolam was similarly high in both countries.Significance: This study compared epilepsy professionals in two neighboringhigh-income countries. Findings suggest an urgent need for international guidelines to recommend best practices on prescribing doses and withdrawal of buccal midazolam. The potential abuse of buccal midazolam by patients and carers warrants further investigation.

'It Doesn't Matter Where You Come From, It Matters Where You Go': Peninsula Dental Students' Career Decisions And Intentions, Ian Mills, Laura Clarry, Amy Rathbone, Marie Bryce, Sally Hanks
Peninsula Dental School
Introduction The south west of England is widely recognised as a 'dental desert' with limited access to NHS (National Health Service) dentistry. One of the major contributing factors to NHS capacity is recruitment and retention of dentists in the region, particularly in rural and coastal areas. Peninsula Dental School was established in 2006 to help address some of the workforce issues at that time, yet despite the success of the Dental School, many dental students still do not stay in the region following graduation.Aims This study aimed to understand factors that influence career intentions and decisions of present and past …

Background: Parental satisfaction is a key quality indicator in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). While the EMPATHIC-30 questionnaire is widely used internationally, no validated German version exists for NICU settings. This study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and validate the EMPATHIC-30G for use in German-speaking NICUs. Methods: A structured Delphi process involving multidisciplinary experts and parents guided the translation and cultural adaptation, including forward-backward translation and cognitive debriefing. The German version was validated in a prospective observational study at a Swiss NICU. Parents of infants hospitalized for ≥24 h completed the questionnaire at discharge. Results: A total of 228 questionnaires …

School of Psychology
Background: Childhood obesity is a serious global health concern that affects approximately 20% of children worldwide. Digital health behavior change interventions have the potential to improve behaviors that can contribute to childhood obesity, such as diet and physical activity, but often lack sufficient user engagement to achieve significant impact. Objective: The aim of this project is to develop evidence to better understand how users engage with digital interventions and how behavior change techniques can be leveraged to support engagement. Specifically, the study will examine the impact of a family-focused app for childhood obesity prevention on health behaviors, health outcomes, and …
The Construction Of Mathematical Reasoning As A Pedagogical Object, Nick Pratt, Julie Alderton
The Construction Of Mathematical Reasoning As A Pedagogical Object, Nick Pratt, Julie Alderton
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper explores how policy aims in mathematics curricula appear in classrooms and, crucially, how the resulting pedagogical practice affects the nature of mathematics itself. Whereas there have been many studies of policy and its relationship with teachers’ practices, few have examined epistemological effects; what mathematics becomes as it is translated from an educational, and political, intention into classroom activity. To focus the study, we examine reasoning as a central idea in mathematics, in the English primary (5-11 years) context. Rather than concentrating on best practice, as an objective account of how to teach reasoning, we adopt a post-structural theoretical …

Exploring Positive Psychology And Goal Setting In Esports Coaching: A Thematic Analysis Of Professional Fortnite Coaches, Samuel Jaffe, Nigel Jackson, Jonathan Rhodes
School of Psychology
This study investigates how professional Fortnite coaches integrate positive psychology, specifically Seligman’s PERMA (positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment) model and goal-setting frameworks, to enhance player performance and well-being. Through semistructured interviews with 16 esports coaches, the research examines how psychological strategies influence motivation, resilience, and long-term success in a highly competitive, digital coaching environment. Using Braun and Clarke’s reflexive thematic analysis, three key themes were constructed: defining and measuring success, goal-setting practices, and balancing positive versus pressured coaching styles. Coaches defined success beyond tournament outcomes, emphasizing player development, consistency, and psychological resilience. Goal-setting strategies were highly individualized, blending …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Studies have shown that migrants and ethnic minority groups were disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, yet the role of the social environment in shaping their vulnerabilities remains underexplored in Japan. This study explored the experiences of migrants in Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic and examined the association between social environmental factors (i.e., population density, neighborhood deprivation, ethnic density, and social networks) and both COVID-19 infections and vaccination uptake. Two nationwide online surveys were conducted in 2021 and 2023 to capture migrants' experiences and analyze these associations during the middle and waning stages of the pandemic. Modified Poisson regressions with …
