Perioperative Oxidative Stress: The Unseen Enemy, Jia L. Stevens, Martin Feelisch, Daniel S. Martin Jan 2019

Perioperative Oxidative Stress: The Unseen Enemy, Jia L. Stevens, Martin Feelisch, Daniel S. Martin

Peninsula Medical School

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are essential for cellular signaling and physiological function. An imbalance between ROS production and antioxidant protection results in a state of oxidative stress (OS), which is associated with perturbations in reduction/oxidation (redox) regulation, cellular dysfunction, organ failure, and disease. The pathophysiology of OS is closely interlinked with inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and, in the case of surgery, ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI). Perioperative OS is a complex response that involves patient, surgical, and anesthetic factors. The magnitude of tissue injury inflicted by the surgery affects the degree of OS, and both duration and nature of the anesthetic procedure applied …

Assessment Of Quality Of Experience (Qoe) Of Image Compression In Social Cloud Computing, Ali L Asif, H He, Ai Khan, M Shafiq

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Image posting and sharing on the social media clouds is a common activity of end users. During the uploading of an image, social media cloud automatically compresses the original image to reduce resolution and file size to save storage and provides service to speed up content loading in the web page. Image quality degradation on social media clouds decreases the user satisfaction level. Quality of Experience (QoE) experiment was conducted for assessing the end user’s satisfaction for image compression. During the experiment, four popular social media clouds were selected for 4 sample image hosting and images were captured with Canon …

A Continued Musical And Personal Dialogue With The Waves Of Epilepsy., Alan Douglas Miles

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

A Continued Musical and Personal Dialogue with the Waves of Epilepsy. In the early hours of the morning several years ago I awoke with paramedics leaning over me. In a state of confusion, my first conscious decision was to enter my music production studio while they attempted to lead me to the ambulance. Music was important to me even in a disorientated post-ictal state (an altered state of consciousness following a seizure). Two weeks later I awoke with paramedics standing over me again. I had started to experience multiple seizures. During the previous weeks, I also experienced numerous incidents of …

The Child As Risk: Precocious Girls And Sexual Consent In Late Victorian Britain, Victoria Bates Jan 2017

The Child As Risk: Precocious Girls And Sexual Consent In Late Victorian Britain, Victoria Bates

SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)

The figure of the precocious girl pervaded Victorian culture, yet is poorly understood. This article focuses on concerns about sexual precocity and their influence on age-of-consent debates in the 1880s. It shows that even this single form of precocity (sexual) took multiple forms and was a malleable concept, often used selectively in parliamentary debates to suit particular agendas. These different uses of precocity did have in common, however, a tendency to be situated against the normal as 'ideal' rather than only statistically 'typical'. As precocity was generally measured against the ideal sexual development and behaviour of respectable North European girls, …

Peripersonal Space And Margin Of Safety Around The Body: Learning Visuo-Tactile Associations In A Humanoid Robot With Artificial Skin, A Roncone, M Hoffmann, U Pattacini, L Fadiga, G Metta Oct 2016

Peripersonal Space And Margin Of Safety Around The Body: Learning Visuo-Tactile Associations In A Humanoid Robot With Artificial Skin, A Roncone, M Hoffmann, U Pattacini, L Fadiga, G Metta

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This paper investigates a biologically motivated model of peripersonal space through its implementation on a humanoid robot. Guided by the present understanding of the neurophysiology of the fronto-parietal system, we developed a computational model inspired by the receptive fields of polymodal neurons identified, for example, in brain areas F4 and VIP. The experiments on the iCub humanoid robot show that the peripersonal space representation i) can be learned efficiently and in real-time via a simple interaction with the robot, ii) can lead to the generation of behaviors like avoidance and reaching, and iii) can contribute to the understanding the biological …

Ambient Scent As A Mood Inducer In Supermarkets: The Role Of Scent Intensity And Time-Pressure Of Shoppers, Maam Leenders, A Smidts, Ae Haji

School of Psychology

This research aims to study the effect of a carefully selected congruent and simple ambient scent in a real-world supermarket setting. Specifically, we study how different levels of scent intensity affect shopper's mood, behavior and evaluations in a space with naturally occurring scents. Using electrostatic aroma diffusers, we apply a carefully selected melon scent at three different intensity levels in a large store of a major supermarket operator. The results show that, in the condition with high scent intensity, the scent has a significant positive effect on shopper’s store evaluations, time spent in store and store level sales. We provide …

Graphical One-Time Password Authentication, Hussain Alsaiari Jan 2016

Graphical One-Time Password Authentication, Hussain Alsaiari

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Complying with a security policy often requires users to create long and complex passwords to protect their accounts. However, remembering such passwords appears difficult for many and may lead to insecure practices, such as choosing weak passwords or writing them down. One-Time Passwords (OTPs) aim to overcome such problems; however, most implemented OTP techniques require special hardware, which not only adds costs, but also raises issues regarding availability. This type of authentication mechanism is mostly adopted by online banking systems to secure their clients’ accounts. However, carrying around authentication tokens was found to be an inconvenient experience for many customers. …

Brain-Computer Music Interfacing: Designing Practical Systems For Creative Applications, Joel Eaton Jan 2016

Brain-Computer Music Interfacing: Designing Practical Systems For Creative Applications, Joel Eaton

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Brain-computer music interfacing (BCMI) presents a novel approach to music making, as it requires only the brainwaves of a user to control musical parameters. This presents immediate benefits for users with motor disabilities that may otherwise prevent them from engaging in traditional musical activities such as composition, performance or collaboration with other musicians. BCMI systems with active control, where a user can make cognitive choices that are detected within brain signals, provide a platform for developing new approaches towards accomplishing these activities. BCMI systems that use passive control present an interesting alternate to active control, where control over music is …

Relationships Between Iron, Oxidative Stress, Glycated Proteins And The Development Of Atherosclerosis In Type 2 Diabetes, Husam O. Dakhil Aljwaid

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Hyperglycaemia stimulates a variety of biochemical abnormalities. The area of particular interest in this study is the influence of non-enzymatic glycation of proteins on iron homeostasis, and particularly on non-transferrin-bound iron (NTBI) and its possible relation to atherogenesis in both Type 2 diabetic and obese non diabetic subjects. The link between non-enzymatic glycation of proteins and iron homeostasis, and development of macrovascular disease may be mechanistically different in Type 2 diabetic and obese non diabetic subjects due to a difference in the protein glycation pattern. Because the following in vivo study required storage of samples for up to two years …

Expression Of Protease-Activated Receptor 3 In The Trigeminal And Dorsal Root Ganglion Of Adult Rats Using Immunohistochemistry, Joshua Press Jul 2013

Expression Of Protease-Activated Receptor 3 In The Trigeminal And Dorsal Root Ganglion Of Adult Rats Using Immunohistochemistry, Joshua Press

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Protease-activated receptors (PARs) have been implicated in a variety of human physiological and pathophysiological processes, including; nociception, neuroinflammation, neuroprotective and neurodegenerative pathways (Peters and Henry, 2009; Adams et al. 2011). PAR3 was discovered as a second thrombin receptor in 1997, and since then few papers have been published which assess its expression in the nervous system (Ishihara et al. 1997). This paper investigates the expression of PAR3 in sensory neurons of the trigeminal ganglion (TG) and dorsal root ganglion (DRG) of naïve adult rats. Immunohistochemistry showed PAR3 to be strongly expressed in non-neuronal cells of both the TG and DRG. …

Modeling Speech Imitation And Ecological Learning Of Auditory-Motor Maps, C Canevari, L Badino, A D'Ausilio, L Fadiga, G Metta Jan 2013

Modeling Speech Imitation And Ecological Learning Of Auditory-Motor Maps, C Canevari, L Badino, A D'Ausilio, L Fadiga, G Metta

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Classical models of speech consider an antero-posterior distinction between perceptive and productive functions. However, the selective alteration of neural activity in speech motor centers, via transcranial magnetic stimulation, was shown to affect speech discrimination. On the automatic speech recognition (ASR) side, the recognition systems have classically relied solely on acoustic data, achieving rather good performance in optimal listening conditions. The main limitations of current ASR are mainly evident in the realistic use of such systems. These limitations can be partly reduced by using normalization strategies that minimize inter-speaker variability by either explicitly removing speakers' peculiarities or adapting different speakers to …

Signature Verification Based On Moments Technique, Shaymaa Al-Juboori

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In this research we will present the signature as a key to the biometric authentication technique. I shall use moment invariants as a tool to make a decision about any signature which is belonging to the certain person or not. Eighteen voluntaries give 108 signatures as a sample to test the proposed system, six samples belong to each person were taken. Moment invariants are used to build a feature vector stored in this system. Euclidean distance measure used to compute the distance between the specific signatures of persons saved in this system and with new sample acquired to same persons …

Life Expansion: Toward An Artistic, Design-Based Theory Of The Transhuman / Posthuman, Natasha Vita-More Jan 2012

Life Expansion: Toward An Artistic, Design-Based Theory Of The Transhuman / Posthuman, Natasha Vita-More

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The thesis’ study of life expansion proposes a framework for artistic, design-based approaches concerned with prolonging human life and sustaining personal identity. To delineate the topic: life expansion means increasing the length of time a person is alive and diversifying the matter in which a person exists. For human life, the length of time is bounded by a single century and its matter is tied to biology. Life expansion is located in the domain of human enhancement, distinctly linked to technological interfaces with biology. The thesis identifies human-computer interaction and the potential of emerging and speculative technologies as seeding the …

Gestalt Biometrics And Their Applications; Instrumentation, Objectivity And Poetics, Hannah Drayson Jan 2011

Gestalt Biometrics And Their Applications; Instrumentation, Objectivity And Poetics, Hannah Drayson

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis is about the relationship between human bodies and instrumental technologies that can be use to measure them. It adopts the position that instruments are technological structures that evoke and manifest particular phenomena of embodied life. However, through their history of association and use in the sciences and scientific medicine, instruments tend to be attached to a particular ontology, that of mechanical objectivity. Embarking from research into the artistic uses of physiological sensor technology in creative practices such as performance and installation art, this thesis asks whether it is possible to use instruments in a way that departs from …

Scientific Divers Quantify First Known Outbreaks Of Cold-Water Coral Disease, J Hall-Spencer, C Munn, K Hiscock May 2009

Scientific Divers Quantify First Known Outbreaks Of Cold-Water Coral Disease, J Hall-Spencer, C Munn, K Hiscock

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Coral diseases are widely reported in the tropics but the first incidence of cold-water coral disease was not noted until 2002 when divers recorded an outbreak at 10-28 m depth off Lundy in a NE Atlantic marine protected area. The seafan Eunicella verrucosa exhibited coenchyme necrosis and subsequent diving surveys of >600 colonies at 13 sites since revealed that disease outbreaks were widespread in SW England to depths of 50 m from 2003-2008, possibly caused by infection by Vibrio bacteria at high temperatures.
