Planktic Foraminifera From The Proposed Gssp For The Oxfordian Stage: Redcliff Point, Near Weymouth, M.B. Hart, T. Aze, W. Hudson, C.W. Smart

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

In the course of the stratigraphical and palaeontological investigations for the Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Oxfordian Stage at Recicliff (near Weymouth) an assemblage of planktic foraminifera has been described. Planktic foraminifera are exceptionally rare in the Jurassic of the United Kingdom and only a few records have been reported in the last few years. At Redcliff, the assemblage is preserved as pyrite steinkerns, but the fauna contains a number of morphotypes which match onto known species from this interval (Globuligerina oxfordiana, Compactogerina stellapolaris) while others have no described species to which they can …

Foraminiferal And Stable Isotope Investigation Of The Cenomanian-Turonian Extinction And Oceanic Anoxic Event, Jodie Fisher Jan 2006

Foraminiferal And Stable Isotope Investigation Of The Cenomanian-Turonian Extinction And Oceanic Anoxic Event, Jodie Fisher

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The Cretaceous was a time of significant global change, particularly around the Cenomanian-Turonian Boundary (CTB) (93.5 Ma). The mid-Cretaceous is considered to mark a period of intense global warming related to widespread tectonic activity, leading to periods of high sea level and no polar ice. This had great effects on the ocean's structure, chemistry and circulation, and led to both extinction and diversification of biota. At the time of the CTB a number of events occurred. Particularly well researched is the oceanic anoxic event (OAE 2) and the organic-rich black shales deposited during this interval. Associated with these organic-rich sediments …

Irish Sea : A Socio-Ecological System, Karen Bowler Jan 2006

Irish Sea : A Socio-Ecological System, Karen Bowler

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Recent research has highlighted the need to look beyond the coastal zone and adopt an ecosystem-based approach to sustainable use and conservation in marine management. At the same time there has been a growing recognition that ecosystem management involves coupled, complex socio-ecological systems which are inherently unpredictable due to the non-linear nature of their construction. The diverse social activities and natural processes involved in such an approach requires the inclusion of multiple disciplines which presently have very limited dialogues. It is apparent that there is an urgent need for new, interdisciplinary, methods with which to address management holistically and under …

Monitoring Peatland Damage And Restoration Using Testate Amoebae As Indicator Organisms, Emma Jane Vickery Jan 2006

Monitoring Peatland Damage And Restoration Using Testate Amoebae As Indicator Organisms, Emma Jane Vickery

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

This thesis has examined the response of testate amoebae communities to restoration at three peatland sites in the UK. It builds upon the use of testate amoebae analysis as a palaeoenvironmental tool by exploring the hypothesis that testate amoebae respond to hydrological conditions in restored mires. Previous research has found that testate amoebae act as good proxies for hydrological condition of intact mires and past conditions but little has been done on their reaction to conditions at damaged sites in the UK. The research aimed to further the understanding of testate amoebae ecology including seasonal variability of communities, a poorly …

An Enquiry Into Fully Lived Moments, Philip Hawkins Jan 2006

An Enquiry Into Fully Lived Moments, Philip Hawkins

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The thesis explores facets of human agency and fully lived moments in the Cobra group, the ideas of Henri Lefebvre, and the ideas of Victor Burgin and psychoanalysis. Connective elements, and their relevance or not, through different disciplines, are a central part of its thinking. To this end some connections are found, some speculative connections are tracked, and there are some ideas that don't connect, yet come close to doing so but which become valuable for the examination of productive tensions and excesses about the lived in a cross-disciplinary enquiry. To begin with, an original set of historical and thematic …

Sustainable Development : The Reflexive Governance Of Risk, Gregory John Borne Jan 2006

Sustainable Development : The Reflexive Governance Of Risk, Gregory John Borne

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

In the face of increase global environmental phenomena such as global warming, social, political and knowledge structures are being reformulated in order to better accommodate these events into governance frameworks. For Ulrich Beck, increased risk has created a World Risk Society which is defined by a state of 'reflexive' modernity (RM) where the central tenets of modernity are re-examined and current developmental patterns are drawn into question. In political and social discourse increased risk has created the need to achieve a sustainable development (SD). In light of criticisms that Beck makes broad and unsubstantiated theoretical assertions, this thesis examines the …

Managing Fisheries Resources In Kaptai Reservoir, Bangladesh, Kku Ahmed, S Rahman, Su Ahammed Jan 2006

Managing Fisheries Resources In Kaptai Reservoir, Bangladesh, Kku Ahmed, S Rahman, Su Ahammed

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This paper examines the various challenges facing the development of fisheries resources in Kaptai reservoir, Bangladesh. The reservoir has undergone major changes in its catch composition since impoundment. Production records show a declining trend in the productivity of high-value fish. A host of managerial, socioeconomic and environmental factors are responsible for the underutilization of the reservoir's potential to provide high-value freshwater fish. These include deterioration of the natural breeding ground, environmental damage, poor implementation of regulations, inefficient fish farming technology and poor management practices. These constraints are discussed and possibilities for future improvements are suggested.

Simultaneous Determination Of Dissolved Organic Carbon And Total Dissolved Nitrogen On A Coupled High-Temperature Combustion Total Organic Carbon-Nitrogen Chemiluminescence Detection (Htc Toc-Ncd) System, X Pan, R Sanders, Ad Tappin, Pj Worsfold, Ep Achterberg

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The marine biogeochemistries of carbon and nitrogen have come under increased scrutiny because of their close involvement in climate change and coastal eutrophication. Recent studies have shown that the high-temperature combustion (HTC) technique is suitable for routine analyses of dissolved organic matter due to its good oxidation efficiency, high sensitivity, and precision. In our laboratory, a coupled HTC TOC-NCD system with a sample changer was used for the automated and simultaneous determination of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) in seawater samples. TOC control software was used for TOC instrument control, DOC data acquisition, and data analysis. …

Environmental Impacts Of Technological Change In Bangladesh Agriculture: Farmers' Perceptions, Determinants, And Effects On Resource Allocation Decisions, S Rahman Jan 2005

Environmental Impacts Of Technological Change In Bangladesh Agriculture: Farmers' Perceptions, Determinants, And Effects On Resource Allocation Decisions, S Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This article measures the impact of modern technology adoption in raising farmers' environmental awareness and the impact of farmers' environmental awareness on resource use by utilizing survey data from 21 villages in three agro‐ecological regions of Bangladesh. The econometric analysis is based on the application of the Tobit model explaining farmers' environmental awareness in the first stage and a profit function examining environmental awareness and resource use relationships in the second stage. Results reveal that the “level” and “duration” of involvement with modern technology raises farmers' environmental awareness, and that farmers' environmental awareness reduces resource use including chemicals. Farmers, who …

Late Hercynian Leucogranites Modelling As Deduced From New Gravity Data : The Example Of The Millevaches Massif (Massif Central, France), A Gebelin, G Martelet, M Brunel, M Faure, P Rossi

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The Millevaches granitic complex, located in the northern part of the French Massif Central, is elongated in a N-S direction, perpendicular to the main E-W trend of the Hercynian belt. It is affected on its limits and in its core by several ductile shear zones that have necessarily played a great role in the emplacement and exhumation of the massif. Based on gravity modelling and recent field observations, this study intends to highlight the massif structure at depth and discuss its mode of emplacement and relations with the surrounding terrains. The new gravity and density measurements on the north-east part …

Holocene Palaeoclimate Reconstruction From New Zealand Peatlands, Zoe Jennifer Hazell Jan 2004

Holocene Palaeoclimate Reconstruction From New Zealand Peatlands, Zoe Jennifer Hazell

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

A selection of palaeoecological proxies were tested on two raised, ombrotrophic, restiad peat bog sites from the North Island of New Zealand. With varying degrees of success, peat humification, testate amoebae, plant macrofossil and charcoal analyses contributed to determining the palaeomoisture records from three cores on each site. Climatic inferences have successfully been made for the Waikato region, mid North Island, over the period between the Tuhua (6,130±30 14C years BP; 6,800-7,150 cal. years BP) and Taupo (1,850±10 14C years BP; 1,650-1,800 cal. years BP) tephras. 47 AMS radiocarbon ages contributed to the production of age-depth models. The peat humification …

The Development Of Diatom-Nutrient Palaeolimnological Inference Models For Uk Lowland Reservoirs, Amy Burgess Jan 2004

The Development Of Diatom-Nutrient Palaeolimnological Inference Models For Uk Lowland Reservoirs, Amy Burgess

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Deterioration of UK lowland reservoir water quality through cultural eutrophication is of concern for both water supply and conservation. This study represents the first attempt to develop diatom-based palaeolimnological inference models for the assessment of eutrophication in UK lowland reservoirs. Models are developed from a 46-reservoir calibration set comprising surface sediment diatom assemblages and contemporary environmental data measured seasonally between May 1999 and October 2000. Following removal of outliers the dataset spans a total phosphorus (TP) gradient of 12-242 µgl ˉ¹ (mean = 63), a chlorophyll-α (Chla) gradient of 1.8-25.5 µgl ˉ¹ (mean = 63) and a conductivity (EC) gradient …

High-Resolution Records Of Climate Change From Lacustrine Stable Isotopes Through The Last Two Millennia In Western Turkey, Matt Jones Jan 2004

High-Resolution Records Of Climate Change From Lacustrine Stable Isotopes Through The Last Two Millennia In Western Turkey, Matt Jones

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Knowledge of past chmate variability is vital if the causes of observed chmate changes since instrumental records began are to be fully understood, particularly those, post-1850 AD, possibly due to anthropogenic activity. The past two millennia provide a long enough background with which to compare post-r850 AD change, whilst errors on proxy records remain relatively small. In the Eastem Mediterranean changes in water balance are of particular interest as water is an important resource. Oxygen isotope records from lakes in the region record changes in water balance and are therefore an important archive for observing natural, and anthropogenicaly forced, variabiUty …

Holocene Sea-Level Changes Along The Channel Coast Of South-West England, Anthony Carl Massey Jan 2004

Holocene Sea-Level Changes Along The Channel Coast Of South-West England, Anthony Carl Massey

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

A Holocene relative sea-level (RSL) history for the south Devon coast is reconstructed through an analysis of twelve cores extracted from the coastal back-barrier environments of Bantham Sands, North Sands, Slapton Sands and Blackpool Sands. Foraminifera preserved in the sediments are assigned an indicative meaning based on the vertical distribution of their modem counterparts from contemporary salt marsh and mudflat environments in the Erme and Salcombe-Kingsbridge estuaries. The contemporary data provide the first inter-tidal (-2.6 to +2.6 m MTL) foraminifera-based transfer function for south-west England from which sea-level changes can be predicted with good precision (RMSEP = ±0.29 m). Sea-level …

Points On My Curve To Find: A Journey Around The Self To Find The World, Morgaine Gaye

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

My creative practice has undergone a chronological series of transformations that has entailed experiments in several modes of self-expression. This has included the writing of prose-text, lyrics, song-writing, musical performance as a vocalist, work in film-making and visual documentation and work as a visual artist. In a life that has so far spanned living for substantial periods in different countries and cultures, my creative practice has been strongly influenced by that international and inter-cultural existence. Whilst on the one hand, different cultures nevertheless manifest 'languages' of communality with each other (especially in non-verbal communication, global 'signs, signals' and 'symbols'), on …

Management Of Marine Wildlife Disturbance, C. Kelly, G. A. Glegg, C. D. Speedie

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

In recent years, concerns have been raised about the health and status of a range of marine species in UK waters, including the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus). Disturbance and harassment from increasing inshore leisure traffic and a fascinated public have been identified as potential threats to these large marine species. This concern is coupled with a legislative framework that is perceived to be less effective in protecting key species than it could be, and difficult to enforce. This study examined the extent of anthropogenic disturbance to a range of marine wildlife in inshore waters around …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

In order to understand the diverse and complex functions of the Human brain, the temporal relationships of vast quantities of multi-dimensional spike train data must be analysed. A number of statistical methods already exist to analyse these relationships. However, as a result of expansions in recording capability hundreds of spike trains must now be analysed simultaneously. In addition to the requirements for new statistical analysis methods, the need for more efficient data representation is paramount. The computer science field of Information Visualization is specifically aimed at producing effective representations of large and complex datasets. This thesis is based on the …

Characterisation Of A Sexual Stage-Specific Gene Encoding Orc1 Homologue In The Human Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Falciparum, J-L Li, Ls Cox Mar 2003

Characterisation Of A Sexual Stage-Specific Gene Encoding Orc1 Homologue In The Human Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Falciparum, J-L Li, Ls Cox

School of Biomedical Sciences

The origin recognition complex (ORC) is a multisubunit protein composed of six polypeptides that binds to replication origins and is essential for the initiation of chromosomal DNA replication. Using the Vectorette technique, we have isolated a novel gene encoding an ORC1-like protein from the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. The gene has no introns and encodes a protein (PfORC1) of 1189 amino acid residues with a predicted molecular mass of 139 kDa. PfORC1 contains all conserved sequences in the ORC1/Cdc6/Cdc18 family and displays the highest homology to the Schizosaccharomyces pombe ORC1. However, PfORC1 possesses an extensive N-terminal segment with several …
