Locomotor Patterns And Persistent Activity In Self-Organizing Neural Models, Thomas Henry Cooke
Locomotor Patterns And Persistent Activity In Self-Organizing Neural Models, Thomas Henry Cooke
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
The thesis investigates principles of self-organization that may account for the observed structure and behaviour of neural networks that generate locomotor behaviour and complex spatiotemporal patterns such as spiral waves, metastable states and persistent activity. This relates to the general neuroscience problem of finding the correspondence between the structure of neural networks and their function. This question is both extremely important and difficult to answer because the structure of a neural network defines a specific type of neural dynamics which underpins some function of the neural system and also influences the structure and parameters of the network including connection strengths. …

Stewards Of The Earth? : A Study Of Teenagers' Pro-Environmental Attitudes And Lifestyles In Devon, Uk And Malaga, Spain, Jennie Winter
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Individual responses to sustainability are recognised as fundamental to progressing the sustainable development agenda. In order to raise awareness and support for sustainability, concerted programmes of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) have been promoted and ESD is now a core element of educational curricula in many countries, particularly in the developed world. One group of particular interest to educators and policy makers is teenagers. Their engagement with sustainability issues, both in rhetorical and participatory terms, is considered essential to both the short and long term infusion of sustainability into public consciousness. However, despite continuing endeavours to involve teenagers in the …
Investigation Into Land-Use Change In Two Contrasting Areas In The Nile Delta, Egypt, Rawad S. Echtaie
Investigation Into Land-Use Change In Two Contrasting Areas In The Nile Delta, Egypt, Rawad S. Echtaie
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Understanding land-use change in developing countries, particularly those situated in environmentally vulnerable and and semi-arid zones, is crucial given the considerable pressures arising due to rapid population growth, climate change and desertification. The purpose of this research was to investigate the main drivers affecting land-use change in the eastern part of the Nile Delta, Egypt in the last two decades. Two contrasting cities in the region were selected for detailed analysis. Almansourah is an ancient settlement relatively close to the Damietta branch of the Nile whereas Alzaqazig is a recent development and the surrounding area was reclaimed from the desert. …
Impact Of Metal Mining On The Water Quality In The Tamar Catchment, Krongkaew Mighanetara
Impact Of Metal Mining On The Water Quality In The Tamar Catchment, Krongkaew Mighanetara
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
This study discusses the effects of past mining activities on sediment and water quality in streams and rivers in the Tamar catchment. High trace element concentrations, both in water and sediments, were observed in streams and rivers draining areas associated with abandoned mine sites. Maximum concentrations were observed in the Gunnislake/Calstock mining district, where intense metalliferous mining took place during the 19th century. Mine waste from abandoned mine sites in this area contained up to 6.3% arsenopyrite, 5.8% pyrite, 0.3% chalcopyrite and 24% scorodite. As a result, high concentrations of trace elements of up to 180000 mg kg‾¹ As, 6500 …

Averting Catastrophic Climate Change: Confronting Wealth, V Hurth, P Wells
Plymouth Business School
In the context of potential catastrophic climate change, it is vital that fundamental drivers of carbon dioxide emissions are pinpointed and addressed. One of the key drivers of these emissions is shown to be increased economic wealth. This paper highlights that links between wealth and carbon dioxide must be addressed, and that although highly debated, the links are not well considered, especially at the detailed level of what drives consumption preferences of the global wealthy. In the context of increasing wealth concentration and poverty gaps, this subject is central to issues of social justice as well as environmental integrity. © …

Geochronology Of Salt-Marsh Sediments, William Alderman Marshall
Geochronology Of Salt-Marsh Sediments, William Alderman Marshall
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Salt-marsh sediments can provide important achives of past sea levels if they can be securely dated. This thesis investigates eight methods for dating salt-marsh sediments. These include traditional and established dating methods (¹⁴C dating and the radionuclides ¹³⁷Cs and ²¹ºPb) and more novel approaches to dating the deposition of salt-marsh sediments (palaeomagnetic dating, the use of' atmospheric stable lead deposition, tephra chronologies, pollen markers, SCP analysis and the use of atmospheric ¹⁴C 'bomb spike' and high-precision AMS ¹⁴C measurements). Sites were selected to provide contrasting sediment sequences that differed both in lithology and accumulation rates and included salt marshes from …
The Distribution Of Phylogenetic Diversity Of Mammals In Mexico And Its Implications For Conservation, Ena Edith Mata Zayas
The Distribution Of Phylogenetic Diversity Of Mammals In Mexico And Its Implications For Conservation, Ena Edith Mata Zayas
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
The current rate of biodiversity loss has stimulated studies aimed at identifying areas of concentration of biodiversity where conservation efforts can be targeted. Phylogeny has become an important element in conservation either to preserve areas of high phylogenetic diversity (and therefore evolutionary history) or to identify species attributes that make them prone to become endangered or at risk of extinction. This dissertation dealt with the quantification of phylogenetic diversity of Mexican mammals, its geographic distribution, and its correlation with both the life history attributes of the species and selected characteristics of the environment. In order to do this, I had …
Getting Just Deserts? Policing, Governance And Rurality In Western Australia, Richard Yarwood
Getting Just Deserts? Policing, Governance And Rurality In Western Australia, Richard Yarwood
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
This paper examines the perceived shift from police to policing in developed world countries. It focuses on the development of multi-agency policing in rural Western Australia and, using ideas from governance theory, questions whether these partnerships are leading to more inclusive policing and new forms of rural governance. Evidence is taken from the development of a Rural Crime Prevention Strategy and interviews with various stakeholders in rural Australia. It is concluded that multi-agency work does offer a more inclusive way forward but that it is still mainly driven by government, rather than radical changes in rural society and power.
A Social Dimension For Digital Architectural Practice, Chris Speed
A Social Dimension For Digital Architectural Practice, Chris Speed
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
This thesis proceeds from an analysis of practice and critical commentary to claim that the opportunities presented to some architectural practices by the advent of ubiquitous digital technology have not been properly exploited. The missed opportunities, it claims, can be attributed largely to the retention of a model of time and spaces as discrete design parameters, which is inappropriate in the context of the widening awareness of social interconnectedness that digital technology has also facilitated. As a remedy, the thesis shows that some social considerations essential to good architecture - which could have been more fully integrated in practice and …
Axon And Dendrite Geography Predict The Specificity Of Synaptic Connections In A Functioning Spinal Cord Network, Wc Li, T Cooke, B Sautois, Et Al
Axon And Dendrite Geography Predict The Specificity Of Synaptic Connections In A Functioning Spinal Cord Network, Wc Li, T Cooke, B Sautois, Et Al
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Background: How specific are the synaptic connections formed as neuronal networks develop and can simple rules account for the formation of functioning circuits? These questions are assessed in the spinal circuits controlling swimming in hatchling frog tadpoles. This is possible because detailed information is now available on the identity and synaptic connections of the main types of neuron. Results: The probabilities of synapses between 7 types of identified spinal neuron were measured directly by making electrical recordings from 500 pairs of neurons. For the same neuron types, the dorso-ventral distributions of axons and dendrites were measured and then used to …
Late Quaternary Fire Histories In The Eastern Mediterrnean Region From Lake Sedimentary Micro-Charcoals, Rebecca Turner
Late Quaternary Fire Histories In The Eastern Mediterrnean Region From Lake Sedimentary Micro-Charcoals, Rebecca Turner
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
The Eastern Mediterranean has a long history of human occupation, which spans the transition from hunter-gatherers to the establishment of early agro-pastoralist communities, coinciding with the Last Glacial: Interglacial transition. Over the same timeframe a delay in post glacial woodland recolonisation in the region has been identified. Fire has long been used by people to manage and manipulate the landscape, and has been hypothesised to have played a role in this delay. This thesis employed lacustrine microcharcoal (particles less than 180 µm) remains to reconstruct Late Quaternary fire histories for Central Turkey and the Levant, and examine the possible role …
Avoiding Collapse: Resilience And Sustainable Development In Vulnerable Small Islands, Matthew Paul Bunce
Avoiding Collapse: Resilience And Sustainable Development In Vulnerable Small Islands, Matthew Paul Bunce
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Small islands dependent on reef fisheries, farming and tourism are vulnerable to rising human and natural pressures and may target "sustainable" development. Marine Protected Areas (MPA) have a proven ability to meet ecological goals, such as restoring fisheries and preserving ecosystem function across scales. However, there is a comparative lack of scientific baseline data and social research which may help local MPA to overcome failures in achieving mixed conservation and development goals in populated coastal areas facing intense pressure. This fieldwork-based case study researched in French and Creole languages in the sub-tropical, mid-Oceanic island of Rodrigues (Mauritius, Indian Ocean) addresses …

Productivity Management Of The Cacao Agro-Food System In Tabasco (Mexico): A Fitness Approach, Cesar Jesus Vazquez Navarrete
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
The farming industry and the agro-food system as a whole are now required to adapt to a challenging and more competitive environment. How the food industry can fit itself into such environment is the main question that is addressed in this study. The fitness approach, an exploratory framework, is applied in order to study the Cacao Agro-food System (CAPS) in Tabasco. Mexico. The final sample consisted of 356 farmers, 37 curing plants, 6 wholesaling firms, and 7 chocolate firms. An anatomical model using correspondence analysis was adopted to understand the main features of every industry in the CAPS. The Pitness …
Middle To Late Holocene Sea-Level Change In Western Denmark : A Diatom-Based Study, Katie Szkornik
Middle To Late Holocene Sea-Level Change In Western Denmark : A Diatom-Based Study, Katie Szkornik
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Modem diatom assemblages and associated environmental variables were collected from six transects across the salt-marsh surface in the Ho Bugt embayment in western Denmark. The relationship between diatom assemblages and environmental variables (elevation, pH, salinity, loss on ignition, grain size) was explored using ordination techniques to assess the potential use of diatoms as sea-level indicators. Results for the two data sets analysed in ordinations indicate that elevation exerts a strong, independent and statistically significant influence on modem diatom distributions in the Ho Bugt embayment. Diatom-based transfer functions were subsequently developed to reconstruct changes in palaeomarsh-surface elevation based on the relationship …

Late Jurassic To Early Cretaceous Stable Isotope And Geochemical Records From The Northern High Latitudes: Implications For Palaeoclimate, Elizabeth Victoria Nunn
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
The Jurassic and Cretaceous periods are widely accepted as being dominated by greenhouse conditions with elevated CO2 levels and warm polar regions. Although much compelling evidence to support this idea of global warmth exists, some recent studies propose that the greenhouse climate may at times have been punctuated by sub-freezing polar conditions and the presence of limited polar ice. The evidence, however, is somewhat equivocal and is both spatially and temporally limited with much of this research until now being concentrated in mid- to low latitudes, despite it being generally accepted that global climate is defined to a significant degree …

Controls On Long-Term Drainage Development Of The Carboneras Basin, Se Spain, Astrid Juliette Blum
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
The impact of external and internal controls on long-term drainage evolution can play an important role in the research on global changes. For longer term controls such as tectonics and climate this necessitates the use of a long time-scale such as the Plio/Pleistocene, and the integration of both geological and geomorphological data. This thesis uses data from Plio/Pleistocene alluvial deposits (deltaic and fluvial) of the Carboneras Basin in southeast Spain to address these issues. The Carboneras Basin, an intermontane basin of the Belie Cordillera, was one of the last of a series of sedimentary basins which underwent transition from marine …

The Challenge Of Interagency Information Sharing: A Systemic Analysis Of Two Sure Start Children's Centres, Susan Moira Richardson
The Challenge Of Interagency Information Sharing: A Systemic Analysis Of Two Sure Start Children's Centres, Susan Moira Richardson
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This study investigates a problem facing professionals working in public service agencies, in the current policy context of partnership working. This is the question of how to share personal service user information across agency boundaries, so that there is minimal risk of important information being ‘lost down the cracks' between agencies, while at the same time avoiding the risk of breaching confidentiality. This study aims to understand better the day to day difficulties faced by those grappling with this problem. This research contributes to the theoretical understanding of this challenge by proposing a new model of information sharing behaviour and …
Migration & Economy In Cornwall, Stuart James Burley
Migration & Economy In Cornwall, Stuart James Burley
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Cornwall is arguably the poorest county in England, but since the 1960s it has been the recipient of some of the highest levels of in-migration. The result of this has seen Cornwall experience some of fastest rates of population growth. This has taken place in the context of counterurbanisation, a process that has been argued to be economically beneficial. Cornwall therefore seems to provide two paradoxical conditions; first, comparative economic poverty has not deterred large numbers of people wishing to live in the county and second, sustained population growth seems to have failed to lift Cornwall from economic poverty. This …

Socio-Economic Aspects Of Commercial Ports And Wharves In Southwest England: A Grounded Theory Approach To Regional Competitiveness, Sarah Tuck
Plymouth Business School Theses
The Southwest Region, as defined by the SW Regional Development Agency, forms an extended peninsula with a coastline of 1,020 km, the longest of any region in England. All along this coastline are fishing ports, commercial ports, small wharves, closed ports, ferry ports and leisure ports. Amongst the smallest are a dozen tidal ports, tiny harbours and rocky wharfs that still maintain a commercial trade of local and environmental significance. According to most theories of port development these ports should close, being forced out of business by larger, more efficient ports. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with fifteen people who were …
