Tolerance Of Sponge Assemblages To Temperature Anomalies: Resilience And Proliferation Of Sponges Following The 1997-8 El-Niño Southern Oscillation., Francisco Kelmo, James J. Bell, Martin J. Attrill Jan 2013

Tolerance Of Sponge Assemblages To Temperature Anomalies: Resilience And Proliferation Of Sponges Following The 1997-8 El-Niño Southern Oscillation., Francisco Kelmo, James J. Bell, Martin J. Attrill

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Coral reefs across the world are under threat from a range of stressors, and while there has been considerable focus on the impacts of these stressors on corals, far less is known about their effect on other reef organisms. The 1997-8 El-Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) had notable and severe impacts on coral reefs worldwide, but not all reef organisms were negatively impacted by this large-scale event. Here we describe how the sponge fauna at Bahia, Brazil was influenced by the 1997-8 ENSO event. Sponge assemblages from three contrasting reef habitats (reef tops, walls and shallow banks) at four sites were …

Interactions Of Trace Metals With Plastic Production Pellets In The Marine Environment, Luke A Holmes Jan 2013

Interactions Of Trace Metals With Plastic Production Pellets In The Marine Environment, Luke A Holmes

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

This study investigates the interactions between dissolved trace metals and plastic debris under controlled laboratory conditions by using polyethylene pellets as a model plastic particle. Specifically, the study compared virgin pellets sourced from a local moulding plant with those collected from local beaches and subjected to aging, attrition and deposition of extraneous material. Pellets collected from the coastline of Southwest England were mainly polyethylene according to Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), although occasional polypropylene pellets were present. Additionally, FTIR was used to identify the extent of degradation of pellets according to a photo-oxidation index derived from the relative magnitudes of …

An Evaluation Of Particulate Phosphorus Storage In An Agricultural Estuary, Suha Zoozi Jan 2013

An Evaluation Of Particulate Phosphorus Storage In An Agricultural Estuary, Suha Zoozi

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Knowledge of fine sediment delivery (both timing and loading) is fundamental to the assessment of non-point source pollution in estuarine environments. This study comprised three key components that led to the development of a fine sediment and particulate associated phosphorus budget in a typical agricultural estuary. Firstly, to explore catchment inputs, turbidity and flow were monitored continuously upstream of the freshwater/saline interface on the main stem channel of the south Devon River Avon, which drains a medium sized agricultural catchment (area 340 km2), in southwest UK. Thirty-five storms were studied in detail; and the hydrological and suspended sediment load response …

Living With A Changing Climate: Holocene Climate Variability And Socio-Evolutionary Trajectories, Central Turkey, Samantha Lee Allcock Jan 2013

Living With A Changing Climate: Holocene Climate Variability And Socio-Evolutionary Trajectories, Central Turkey, Samantha Lee Allcock

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Collaborative studies between Quaternary scientists and archaeologists increasingly provide new and informative discussions about the nature and timing of cultural change and links with variation in the natural world (particularly climate). In the Eastern Mediterranean region, connecting the human past with palaeoclimate is an important research theme but the complex interactions between them are still poorly understood and past climate records have often been collected from regions distant from the human record. The thesis aims to derive a record of past climatic and environmental changes from lake sediment cores and synthesise this with archaeological data in order to reconstruct human-climate …

A Palaeoecological Approach To Understanding The Impact Of Coastal Changes In Late Holocene Societies Using The Isles Of Scilly As A Case Study, Marta Perez Jan 2013

A Palaeoecological Approach To Understanding The Impact Of Coastal Changes In Late Holocene Societies Using The Isles Of Scilly As A Case Study, Marta Perez

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The overall aim of this thesis was to explore the impact of environmental changes (relative sea level increase and climate) on coastal communities and to investigate how these environmental factors controlled subsistence economies through the Holocene. The hypothesis tested was that relative sea level rise is a key factor influencing location and subsistence strategies of coastal communities throughout the Holocene and that, due to environmental conditions, these changes will be more evident in islands. The Isles of Scilly, located 27 miles off the south west coast of England, provide a good case study for the response of communities to marine …

Factors That Impact Pseudo-Nitzschia Spp. Occurrence, Growth, And Toxin Production, Naomi Downes-Tettmar Jan 2013

Factors That Impact Pseudo-Nitzschia Spp. Occurrence, Growth, And Toxin Production, Naomi Downes-Tettmar

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

This work investigates, for the first time, the Pseudo-nitzschia (PN) dynamics in the western English Channel (L4) and the environmental factors impacting on domoic acid (DA) production in these waters. This is combined with laboratory studies examining key environmental factors and the multifactorial impact of multiple macronutrient and micronutrient availability on PN growth and DA production. An LC-MS method was established, optimised, and compared with ELISA for the accurate and reproducible extraction and determination of particulate and dissolved DA. The method was used to measure the seasonal variation in DA at L4 during 2009 and this was compared to PN …

Holocene Relative Sea-Level Changes In South Hinnøya, Arctic Norway, Robert Langdon Barnett Jan 2013

Holocene Relative Sea-Level Changes In South Hinnøya, Arctic Norway, Robert Langdon Barnett

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

This study develops techniques for the preparation and counting of testate amoebae for Holocene sea-level reconstructions. In addition, this study provides a ~3000 year relative sea-level reconstruction for south Hinnøya in the Vesterålen islands off mainland Norway, adding new data to a poorly defined period of the Holocene sea-level history of north-western Norway. This is important to quantify rates of glacial-isostatic adjustment (GIA), to refine GIA models, and to establish baseline (pre-industrial) rates of relative sea-level change. Surface sediments from two salt marshes (Storosen and Svinøyosen) in south Hinnøya are used to assess the effects of using different preparation procedures …

Allotments And Alternative Food Networks: The Case Of Plymouth, Uk, Wendy M Miller Jan 2013

Allotments And Alternative Food Networks: The Case Of Plymouth, Uk, Wendy M Miller

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Alternative food networks (AFNs) are the focus of an ‘explosive growth’ of research in Europe (Goodman 2004), and the term covers a wide range of activities, from food banks, community gardens, and farmers’ markets, to community supported or organic agriculture. However, there is an impasse in differing positions over whether AFNs represent an exclusionary place-based ‘quality turn’ (Ilbery and Kneafsey 2000), or whether they contribute to inclusive local communities, sustainability and food security (Tregear 2011, Kirwan and Maye 2013). This research aimed to clarify these debates, through exploration of UK allotments as a benchmark for AFNs, using the case of …

Identification Of Variability In Sub-Arctic Sea Ice Conditions During The Younger Dryas And Holocene, Patricia Cabedo Sanz Jan 2013

Identification Of Variability In Sub-Arctic Sea Ice Conditions During The Younger Dryas And Holocene, Patricia Cabedo Sanz

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The presence of the sea ice diatom biomarker IP25 in Arctic marine sediments has been used in previous studies as a proxy for past spring sea ice occurrence and as an indicator of wider palaeoenvironmental conditions for different regions of the Arctic over various timescales. The current study describes a number of analytical and palaeoceanographic developments of the IP25 sea ice biomarker. First, IP25 was extracted and purified from Arctic marine sediments. This enabled the structure of IP25 to be confirmed and enabled instrumental (GC-MS) calibrations to be carried out so that quantitative measurements could be performed with greater accuracy. …

Effects Of The Late Permian Mass Extinction On Chondrichthyan Palaeobiodiversity And Distribution Patterns, Martha Hall Jan 2013

Effects Of The Late Permian Mass Extinction On Chondrichthyan Palaeobiodiversity And Distribution Patterns, Martha Hall

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The Late Permian mass extinction occurring at 252.6 ± 0.2 Ma is the most severe Phanerozoic extinction event and was preceded and followed by additional disturbances. Patterns and processes of extinction and recovery of marine vertebrates have been little studied compared to marine invertebrates. This project focuses on Chondrichthyes, which, together with other marine fish, appeared to have been relatively unaffected by the extinction, while most of their supporting ecosystem collapsed. This study explores the authenticity of extinction among chondrichthyans and possible explanations for the observed patterns, because extinction severities on the taxonomic and ecological levels may be decoupled or …

Distant Relations: A Study Of Identity, Ethics And Power In The Relationship Between Britain And The United Kingdom Overseas Territories, Nichola Harmer

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

This thesis contributes to new understandings of the contemporary relationship between Britain and the fourteen remaining United Kingdom Overseas Territories. By examining the discourse of social and political elites in Britain and in several Overseas Territories it identifies the significance of the role of identity in shaping perceptions and relations between these international actors. The thesis explores how understandings of the Overseas Territories as either part of, external to, or occupying an intermediate position with regard to the British state, shapes power relations and ethical considerations in the relationship between Britain and the territories. The importance of identity in this …

Synthesis, Fractionation, Characterisation And Toxicity Of Naphthenic Acids From Complex Mixtures, David Jones Jan 2013

Synthesis, Fractionation, Characterisation And Toxicity Of Naphthenic Acids From Complex Mixtures, David Jones

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Amongst the polar organic compounds occurring in unrefined and refined crude oils and the associated polluted production waters, complex mixtures of acids, known historically as naphthenic acids (NAs), have achieved prominence. This is particularly because NAs have been designated a toxicant class of concern in the oil sands process-affected water (OSPW) that has accumulated in vast quantities following exploitation of the oil sands of Northern Alberta, Canada in recent years. However, though there have been calls for NAs to be added to pollutant inventories, at the initiation of the current study, little knowledge existed of the exact composition of refined …

Seedhouse, Andrew Colin A Critical Evaluation Of Community Rail Policy And Practice During The New Labour Years 2003 - 2010 This thesis examines how the changing governance environments introduced under New Labour compromised or assisted the delivery of the 2004 Community Rail Development Strategy. It considers the origins of Community Rail and the circumstances which led to the adoption of the 2004 Strategy and its content. It explores the wider processes of governance change across multiple scales and the rise of a new neoliberal approach favoured by recent administrations, with particular emphasis of New Labour’s introduction of the Third Way …

Networks, News And Communication: Political Elites And Community Relations In Elizabethan Devon, 1588-1603, Ian David Cooper Jan 2013

Networks, News And Communication: Political Elites And Community Relations In Elizabethan Devon, 1588-1603, Ian David Cooper

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Focusing on the ‘second reign’ of Queen Elizabeth I (1588-1603), this thesis constitutes the first significant socio-political examination of Elizabethan Devon – a geographically peripheral county, yet strategically central in matters pertaining to national defence and security. A complex web of personal associations and informal alliances underpinned politics and governance in Tudor England; but whereas a great deal is now understood about relations between both the political elite and the organs of government at the centre of affairs, many questions still remain unanswered about how networks of political actors functioned at a provincial and neighbourhood level, and how these networks …

Imagining The Thames: Conceptions And Functions Of The River In The Fiction Of Charles Dickens, Stephen Chapman Jan 2013

Imagining The Thames: Conceptions And Functions Of The River In The Fiction Of Charles Dickens, Stephen Chapman

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis examines Dickens‟s uses of images of the river throughout his fiction, and also in the early sketches, the reprinted pieces from Household Words and The Uncommercial Traveller. The river concerned is usually but not exclusively the Thames, usually but not exclusively in London. The thesis offers some practical evidence to account for the powerful influence of the Thames upon Dickens‟s imagination and shows how he conceives of it both within existing frames of reference and in some distinctively Dickensian ways. It considers how Dickens‟s representations of the river play into the cult of the picturesque which emerged at …

Authority and Crime, 1835-1860: A Comparison between Exmouth and Torquay This thesis explores the impact of crime on seaside resorts in mid-nineteenth century England, together with the implications and challenges presented for authority and control. The evidence is based on a case study of two contrasting south Devon resorts, Exmouth and Torquay. The research findings are based mainly on the period between 1835 and 1860. In particular, the thesis considers the nature and scale of crime committed and the reactions produced amongst those in positions of power and authority. The responses of these influential individuals and groups were shaped by …

Diffracting Representation: Towards A Situated Aesthetics Of Technospaces, Federica Timeto Jan 2013

Diffracting Representation: Towards A Situated Aesthetics Of Technospaces, Federica Timeto

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

My research for this thesis focusses on the concepts of representation and space in order to demonstrate their theoretical and practical co-implications. Discussing various theorists of space in the first part and analyzing a number of artists and artworks as case studies in the second part, I elaborate a critique of the representational imaginary in order to articulate an alternative notion of representation by means of which a relational, qualitative and performative spatiality can emerge. I specifically focus on technospaces, which I consider a privileged field for observing the intersections of representation and spatiality; it is a field in which …

The Composer Isn't There: A Personal Exploration Of Place In Fixed Media Composition, Hilary Mullaney Jan 2013

The Composer Isn't There: A Personal Exploration Of Place In Fixed Media Composition, Hilary Mullaney

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This practice-based research is concerned with a collection of fixed media compositions written between 2005 and 2012 with accompanying contextual writing. The primary focus of this research was to produce sound works, but the concept of place has played a significant role throughout both the compositional process and in the reflection of each composition. This research explores how place is ‘heard and felt’ (Feld, 2005) in a composition and how recollected memory impacts on the compositional process. Artistic decisions made with regard to creating the compositions reflect my personal place and associations with these sound materials at a given time …

Borders And Objects: Representing The Geopolitical In New World Art Histories, 1990-2010, Fang-Lin Hou

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Several contemporary art historians have been interested in exploring how their discipline could respond to the increasing globalisation of knowledge and information by encompassing global perspectives into the methodologies that underpin their approaches to art historiography. This dissertation aims to explore how, in developing their new approaches to world art history, they have drawn on a range of natural and social sciences, thus enabling their work to be placed in a wider social, political and indeed global context. While their individual approaches are many and varied it is important to identify commonalities between them so as to highlight unifying approaches …

Collecting En Route: An Exploration Of The Ethnographic Collection Of Gertrude Emily Benham, Catherine Cummings

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

In the second half of the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth century the collecting of objects from colonized countries and their subsequent display in western museums was widespread throughout Western Europe. How and why these collections were made, the processes of collection, and by whom, has only recently begun to be addressed. This thesis is an exploration of the ethnographic collection of Gertrude Emily Benham (1867-1938) who made eight voyages independently around the world from 1904 until 1938, during which time she amassed a collection of approximately eight hundred objects, which she donated to Plymouth City …

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

In drawing from the popular TV comedy Benidorm this paper seeks to engage with research and discourses held around working class tourism. The paper will at first discuss Benidorm, focusing upon the characters within the show and asking how is social class presented and performed? And ask who or what are we really laughing at? The paper then moves to examine the background to the birth of the package holiday and the development of the mass tourism resort in Spain. It then draws on writing and research focused around social class and tourism, in particular the work of Andrews (2009, …

The Muslim Sports Tourist And The Olympic Games Movement, Karl A. Russell, Noëlle O'Connor Jan 2013

The Muslim Sports Tourist And The Olympic Games Movement, Karl A. Russell, Noëlle O'Connor

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

This paper explores the view that the Olympic Games Movement and the modern day Olympic Games while seeking to be a secular event is regarded by many participants and spectators as an event where they are able to demonstrate expressions of their religious faith. The first Olympic Games were staged in ancient Greece and they comprised a series of sporting events staged as a way of honouring the Greek God; Zeus, considered by the Romans to be a pagan god. The origins and mythology surrounding the early Olympic Games had a non-secular basis and led to an almost intrinsic belief …
