Beyond Blade Runner: A Dialogic Of The Everyday In Macau's Fictional Landscape, R Brown, Z Latham
School of Art, Design and Architecture
The movie Blade Runner has been posited as 'a metaphor of the postmodern condition,' a proposition advanced by Giuliana Bruno and David Harvey. The hybridity of the landscape depicted in the film evokes postmodernism's emphasis on 'fiction rather than function, signs rather than things' drawing as Bruno suggests on objectified, synthesised images of Hong Kong or Tokyo Bruno. Narratives of film afford much in helping us to understand our world, and ourselves within it; sci-fi cinema is no exception to this, offering us "an arena in which we can explore exactly what it is be 'human'." Yet as David Byrne …

Significance This study reveals that animal fats preserved in pottery vessels from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage site of Çatalhöyük recorded the abrupt 8.2-thousand years B.P. climatic event in their hydrogen isotopic compositions. In addition, significant changes are observed in the archaeology and faunal assemblage of the site, showing how the early farming community at Çatalhöyük had to adapt to climate change. Significantly, this contribution shows that individual biomolecules preserved in ancient animal fats can be used to reconstruct paleoclimate records and thus, provides a powerful tool for the detection of climatic events at …

Hydraulic Retention Time Affects Bacterial Community Structure In An As-Rich Acid Mine Drainage (Amd) Biotreatment Process., L Fernandez-Rojo, C Casiot, V Tardy, E Laroche, Et Al
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Arsenic removal consecutive to biological iron oxidation and precipitation is an effective process for treating As-rich acid mine drainage (AMD). We studied the effect of hydraulic retention time (HRT)-from 74 to 456 min-in a bench-scale bioreactor exploiting such process. The treatment efficiency was monitored during 19 days, and the final mineralogy and bacterial communities of the biogenic precipitates were characterized by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The percentage of Fe(II) oxidation (10-47%) and As removal (19-37%) increased with increasing HRT. Arsenic was trapped in the biogenic precipitates as As(III)-bearing schwertmannite and amorphous ferric arsenate, with a …

Abstract. The island of South Georgia is situated in the iron (Fe)-depleted Antarctic Circumpolar Current of the Southern Ocean. Iron emanating from its shelf system fuels large phytoplankton blooms downstream of the island, but the actual supply mechanisms are unclear. To address this, we present an inventory of Fe, manganese (Mn), and aluminium (Al) in shelf sediments, pore waters, and the water column in the vicinity of South Georgia, alongside data on zooplankton-mediated Fe cycling processes, and provide estimates of the relative dissolved Fe (DFe) fluxes from these sources. Seafloor sediments, modified by authigenic Fe precipitation, were the main particulate …

The National Health Service (Nhs) In 'Crisis': The Role Played By A Shift From Horizontal To Vertical Principles Of Equity., Sheena Asthana, Alex Gibson
Peninsula Medical School
Explanations of the state of 'crisis' in the English National Health Service (NHS) generally focus on the overall level of health care funding rather than the way in which funding is distributed. Describing systematic patterns in the way different areas are experiencing crisis, this paper suggests that NHS organisations in older, rural and particularly coastal areas are more likely to be 'failing' and that this is due to the historic underfunding of such areas. This partly reflects methodological and technical shortcomings in NHS resource allocation formulae. It is also the outcome of a philosophical shift from horizontal (equal access for …
Black Plastics: Linear And Circular Economies, Hazardous Additives And Marine Pollution., Andrew Turner
Black Plastics: Linear And Circular Economies, Hazardous Additives And Marine Pollution., Andrew Turner
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Black products constitute about 15% of the domestic plastic waste stream, of which the majority is single-use packaging and trays for food. This material is not, however, readily recycled owing to the low sensitivity of black pigments to near infrared radiation used in conventional plastic sorting facilities. Accordingly, there is mounting evidence that the demand for black plastics in consumer products is partly met by sourcing material from the plastic housings of end-of-life waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE). Inefficiently sorted WEEE plastic has the potential to introduce restricted and hazardous substances into the recyclate, including brominated flame retardants (BFRs), …

There is considerable literature on internationalising the curriculum in higher education, but relatively little of this focuses on developing international perspectives in home-based students. In particular, there has been limited direct engagement with student views and understandings, especially comparatively across a wide range of subjects. To address this gap, we surveyed 495 first-year students in nine subjects across four faculties at a UK university, asking about their views on internationalisation. We also examined an apparent bias in the literature towards Business subject case studies. We found some support for generic approaches to teaching internationalisation for home students, but a more …

© 2018 The Authors Copper (Cu) is both an essential micronutrient and toxic to photosynthesizing microorganisms at low concentrations. Its dissolved vertical distribution in the oceans is unusual, being neither a nutrient-type nor scavenged-type element. This distribution is attributed to biological uptake in the surface ocean with remineralisation at depth, combined with strong organic complexation by dissolved ligands, scavenging onto particles, and benthic sedimentary input. We present coupled dissolved and particulate phase Cu isotope data along the UK-GEOTRACES South Atlantic section, alongside higher resolution dissolved and particulate phase Cu concentration measurements. Our dissolved phase isotope data contribute to an emerging …

Beyond The Management-Employee Dyad: Supply Chain Initiatives In Shipping, L Tang, S Bhattacharya
Plymouth Business School
This article examines supply chain health and safety initiatives in the oil shipping industry. In particular, it explores the triangular relationships between ship cargo clients, shipping company management and seafarers and reveals the inherent complexities and tensions involved. It shows that while managers capitalise on the supply chain pressure to squeeze more effort out of seafarers, seafarers tend to adhere to the corporate line colluding with managers to hide defects and falsify records. Nevertheless, seafarers occasionally use the supply chain leverage to their advantage by tactically exposing ship defects during ship inspections.

Slope Stability Models For Rainfall-Induced Lahars During Long-Lasting Eruptions, V Baumann, C Bonadonna, S Cuomo, M Moscariello, I Manzella
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
In this study we analyse the spatial distribution of potential lahar sources during long-lasting eruptions using two slope stability models (SHALSTAB and TRIGRS). The analysis is based on observed deposit grain-size and thickness, rainfall data and slope angle of the lahar events, in the area surrounding the Cordón Caulle volcano, Chile, that occurred during the 2011 eruption. The main phase of the eruption (4–7 June) was characterized by eruptive plumes from 7 to 11 km high which dispersed most of the tephra eastward toward Argentina, with a total estimated volume of about 1 km3. Tephra-fallout blanketed the region from ESE …

Measurement Of Methylamines In Seawater Using Solid Phase Microextraction And Gas Chromatography, Mark F. Fitzsimons, Charlotte H.L. Cree, Ruth Airs, Stephen D. Archer
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The methylamines form part of the marine organic nitrogen pool. Although they are ubiquitous in marine systems, little is known about their distribution, production and fate in the marine environment. Analytical methods have been developed for their analysis in marine waters, but these have employed custom-made apparatus, limiting data to a few studies. Here, we report a method developed for the determination of methylamines in seawater which combines headspace solid phase micro-extraction (SPME) and gas chromatography with selective nitrogen detection. Gaseous methylamines were pre-concentrated from water samples (approximately 1 L) at elevated temperature, onto a polydimethylsiloxane/divinylbenzene SPME fibre. The analytes …

Joint Determination Of Improved Variety Adoption, Productivity And Efficiency Of Pulse Production In Bangladesh: A Sample-Selection Stochastic Frontier Approach, S Rahman, Ma Matin, Mk Hasan
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Pulses are an important source of protein and have recently gained international prominence. This paper jointly identifies the determinants of improved variety adoption, productivity and efficiency of 2700 pulse producers from 10 pulse-growing districts of Bangladesh using a Sample-selection Stochastic Production Frontier model. Result revealed that the decision to adopt improved pulse technology is significantly influenced by yield, farming experience, education and extension contact while subsistence pressure discourages adoption. Land, fertilizer, mechanical power, pesticides and labour are the significant determinants of improved pulse productivity. Productivity is significantly lower for improved varieties of lentil, blackgram and chickpea as compared to mungbean …

The laboratory in chemistry has been a place for student learning for many years. The study here developed a practical experiment to form part of the curriculum of Plymouth University’s BSc (Hons) Chemistry course for first year students. The experiment focused on physical chemistry and explored rates of reaction using a modified crystal violet and sodium hydroxide reaction. The modifications from an original method included the concentrations of sodium hydroxide and the instrument used. The practical was finalised and lab script produced in eight weeks. Further studies were also conducted surrounding the effect of temperature on the reaction. The resultant …

Reducing Urban Pollution From Coastal Settlements With Green Roofs, Alexander Phillips
The Plymouth Student Scientist
It was identified that traditional infrastructural methods for solving coastal pollution were becoming too costly and insufficient in combatting the effects of climate change. This report investigates the sustainable drainage method of green roofing as a possible approach to reducing coastal pollution. A generic computational hydraulic model was created, using Plymouth as a design template, to represent 3 different scenarios in which a combined sewage system would require overflow relief. Storm simulations were run through the scenarios to determine a set of baseline sewage spilling results. The simulations were rerun after allowances for green roofs, with substrates of 50mm and …

Archaeal isoprenoidal glycerol dibiphytanyl glycerol tetraether lipids (iGDGTs) and their non-isoprenoidal branched bacterial analogues (brGDGTs) have widespread applications in biogeochemistry and paleothermometry. Analysis of GDGTs usually involves separation using high performance liquid chromatography, typically coupled via atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation to mass spectrometric detection in selected ion-monitoring mode (HPLC–APCI-MS). However, reliable determination of ratios and, in particular, quantification by this technique, can be challenging due to differences in ionisation efficiencies of the various compounds. Quantification of GDGTs also relies on external calibration of the relative response to an internal standard with authenticated GDGTs, which are often not readily accessible. Here, …

Lifting The Lid On Financial Inclusion: Evidence From Emerging Economies, T Nawaz
Plymouth Business School
Financial inclusion has become a subject of growing interest for academics, professionals, and policy-makers in recent times. Researchers stress the importance of financial inclusion and highlight the significant role of financial institutions, such as banks, in promoting financial inclusion. Therefore, it is imperative to analyse the role and commitment of banks in promoting financial inclusion, especially those financial institutions (i.e., Islamic banks) which came into existence to promote socio-economic justice through redistribution of wealth in society. The study is built on the argument that Islamic banking business model is based on intangible sources i.e., Shari’ah law and such sources are …

© 2018 The Authors. Palaeoenvironmental records from the now-submerged Bering Land Bridge (BLB) covering the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to the present are needed to document changing environments and connections with the dispersal of humans into North America. Moreover, terrestrially based records of environmental changes are needed in close proximity to the re-establishment of circulation between Pacific and Atlantic Oceans following the end of the last glaciation to test palaeo-climate models for the high latitudes. We present the first terrestrial temperature and hydrologic reconstructions from the LGM to the present from the BLB’s south-central margin. We find that the timing …

In 2004, the term ‘Web 2.0’ was coined to describe the new way in which users were consuming the Internet (Kaplan and Haenlein, 2010). It was on this new platform that the evolution of social media took place and consequently, the production of user generated content on a scale not previously seen (Kaplan and Haenlein, 2010). Twitter is among the array of social media sites and is currently the fastest growing and most popular microblogging site in the world (Atefeh and Khreich, 2015).

Using Hermeneutic Phenomenology And The Ethnographic Principle Of Cultural Interpretation With Malaysian Nurses, N Arunasalam
Using Hermeneutic Phenomenology And The Ethnographic Principle Of Cultural Interpretation With Malaysian Nurses, N Arunasalam
School of Nursing and Midwifery
BACKGROUND: The interpretive paradigm and hermeneutic phenomenological design are the most popular methods used in international cross-cultural research in healthcare, nurse education and nursing practice. Their inherent appeal is that they help researchers to explore experiences. The ethnographic principle of cultural interpretation can also be used to provide meaning, clarity and insight. AIM: To examine the use of hermeneutic phenomenology and the ethnographic principle of cultural interpretation in a research study conducted with Malaysian nurses on part-time, transnational, post-registration, top-up nursing degree programmes provided by one Australian and two UK universities. DISCUSSION: To enable the researcher to undertake international cross-cultural …
