© 2018 Elsevier Ltd The development of various combinative methods for Arctic sea ice reconstruction using the sympagic highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) IP25in conjunction with pelagic biomarkers has often facilitated more detailed descriptions of sea ice conditions than using IP25alone. Here, we investigated the application of the Phytoplankton-IP25index (PIP25) and a recently proposed Classification Tree (CT) model for describing temporal shifts in sea ice conditions to assess the consistency of both methods. Based on biomarker data from three downcore records from the Barents Sea spanning millennial timescales, we showcase apparent and potential limitations in both approaches, and provide recommendations for …

Investigating The History Of Volatiles In The Solar System Using Synchrotron Infrared Micro-Spectroscopy, Aj King, Pf Schofield, Nr Stephen, Et Al
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The aqueously altered CM carbonaceous chondrite meteorites can be used to investigate the nature and transport of volatiles in the early solar system. We present the preliminary results of an effort to collect 2D infrared (IR) spectral maps from the matrix and fine-grained rims (FGRs) of material that surround chondrules and inclusions in the Murchison CM2 meteorite using synchrotron IR micro-spectroscopy. The main features in mid-IR spectra of the matrix and FGRs occur at ∼3500 cm−1 and ∼1000 cm−1 and are attributed to –OH/H2O and Si–O bonds in phyllosilicates and anhydrous silicates. Minor features in the spectra are attributed to …

Assessing The Resilience Of Human Systems: A Critical Evaluation Of Universal And Contextual Resilience Variables, O Wilson, G Wilson
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
This study analyses the use of contextual and universal variables to assess the resilience of human systems. The article examines the terms ‘contextual’ and ‘universal’ in relation to resilience variables, how widely accepted different variables are as indicators of resilience, and the extent to which variables can be classified using these conceptual terms. The article analyses how the ‘direction’ of a variable indicating either resilience or vulnerability can be assessed and argues that often the same variable can be interpreted differently for the resilience of a human system, depending on the context of the system under investigation and the positionality …

To identify and problematise the key issues characterising the relationship between global sustainability contexts and the limited response of HE to date - with the purpose of unlocking the potential for innovative, replicable efforts to develop sustainability competencies through innovation in curriculum policy and practice, through addressing these sub-aims: How far does HE policy accommodate and reflect the need for sustainability competencies? How can capacity for teaching for competency be built and supported through new policies? How can curricula and pedagogy be better aligned to facilitate the building of sustainability competency in learners and teachers? What effect and influence does …

Representational Fluidity In Embodied (Artificial) Cognition, D Windridge, S Thill
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Theories of embodied cognition agree that the body plays some role in human cognition, but disagree on the precise nature of this role. While it is (together with the environment) fundamentally engrained in the so-called 4E (or multi-E) cognition stance, there also exists interpretations wherein the body is merely an input/output interface for cognitive processes that are entirely computational. In the present paper, we show that even if one takes such a strong computationalist position, the role of the body must be more than an interface to the world. To achieve human cognition, the computational mechanisms of a cognitive agent …

Measuring Quality Of Economic Growth Incorporating Environment And Social Welfare:A Total Productivity Approach With An Application On China, Y Sun, S Rahman, C Dai
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
By extending the traditional productivity theory, a new concept total productivity(TP) is introduced. Using a directional distance function approach, the concept is applied to measuring economic growth of 8 economic regions of China covering an 18 years period(1997-2014) and test its convergence. Results showed that TP grew at an average rate of 6.6% per year led mainly by technical change(6.5%). When environmental undesirable outputs are included, the Middle Yellow River, Northwest and Southwest regions of China witnessed higher productivity changes. Results of the convergence analysis revealed that China had made progress in reducing regional imbalance in growth. Inclusion of undesirable …

Soil erosion by water is critical for soil, lake and reservoir degradation in the mid-hills of Nepal. Identification of the nature and relative contribution of sediment sources in rivers is important to mitigate water erosion within catchments and siltation problems in lakes and reservoirs. We estimated the relative contribution of land uses (i.e. sources) to suspended and streambed sediments in the Chitlang catchment using stable carbon isotope signature (δ13C) of long-chain fatty acids as a tracer input for MixSIAR, a Bayesian mixing model used to apportion sediment sources. Our findings reveal that the relative contribution of land uses varied between …

UK implementation of the European Union Water Framework Directive (for the 2015-2021 cycle) Ecological Status (ES) classification for river phosphorus is based on the calculation of reference conditions for reactive phosphorus (RP) using river alkalinity measurements. Underpinning this approach is that the alkalinity is primarily from rock weathering and is free of anthropogenic influences. However, the potential contribution of anthropogenic alkalinity needs to be considered and, if possible, quantified. In the rural South West River Basin District of England, 38 river sites were examined with respect to river alkalinity loads in order to test this consideration. At river base flow …

Thirty-one ethnographic interviews were conducted with health and well-being sector businesses to examine the dynamics of innovation in the UK (Cornwall) and across Finland. The Nordic countries are at the leading edge of these types of public health nature-based interventions, consequently, Finland was chosen as a comparator to the UK. We found that the construction of natural environment based services for health and well-being follows a five-step model: (1) Services are specifically designed for individuals’ needs; (2) These services are based around routine behaviours of that individual and their personal and social habits; (3) This creates a process of normalisation …

Arctic and Antarctic polynyas are crucial sites for deep-water formation, which helps sustain global ocean circulation. During glacial times, the occurrence of polynyas proximal to expansive ice sheets in both hemispheres has been proposed to explain limited ocean ventilation and a habitat requirement for marine and higher-trophic terrestrial fauna. Nonetheless, their existence remains equivocal, not least due to the hitherto paucity of sufficiently characteristic proxy data. Here we demonstrate polynya formation in front of the NW Eurasian ice sheets during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), which resulted from katabatic winds blowing seaward of the ice shelves and upwelling of warm, …

The comprehensive extraction recovery assessment of organic analytes from complex samples such as oil field produced water (PW) is a challenging task. A targeted approach is usually used for recovery and determination of compounds in these types of analysis. Here we suggest a more comprehensive and less biased approach for the extraction recovery assessment of complex samples. This method combines conventional targeted analysis with a non-targeted approach to evaluate the extraction recovery of complex mixtures. Three generic extraction methods: liquid-liquid extraction (Lq), and solid phase extraction using HLB cartridges (HLB), and the combination of ENV+ and C8 (ENV) cartridges, were …

Computer and networking technology on board ships is increasing in complexity as the levels of automation and monitoring at sea evolve. Ships are acknowledged to be a System of systems, including both IT (Information Technology) and OT (Operational technology). A virtual team that includes members of the various on-board departments, shore based technical support staff and vendors perform management of technical equipment, largely in isolation. It is possible to conclude that the technology installation is one of the only operational aspects of a vessel, where no one has the full picture and could drive a coordinated response to a major …

‘Waste Not, Want Not!’: Qualitative Insights Into Consumer Food Waste Behaviour, Mihaela Bishop, Phil Megicks
Plymouth Business School
Food waste is generated in large amounts across the food chain, ensuring serious environmental, social and economic consequences. Although consumers are the single biggest contributors, little is known about the drivers of food waste in households. This study utilises a qualitative approach to explore attitudes and beliefs towards food waste, identify associations between personal psychological factors and behaviour and establish consumer knowledge, understanding and awareness of food waste. Thematic analysis enabled further consideration of the attitude, normative and control beliefs in relation to household food waste behaviour. Findings suggest that all the dimensions of attitudinal beliefs have, to a greater …

An Exploration Of The Barriers Uk Small Ports Face In The Development Of Intermodal Transport Solutions, F Scheuring, S Karamperidis, V Borisov
Plymouth Business School
Intermodal hinterland transport solutions of major ports increasingly become a differentiating factor for shipping lines and shippers. Furthermore, rail as alternative solution to road freight provides a price competitive option, which at the same time increases the sustainability of hinterland transport. Major UK ports like Felixstowe have the financial, geographical and relational attributes to overcome barriers of developing extensive intermodal hinterland networks, whereas smaller ports are considerably less fortunate regarding their prospects of intermodal development. The scarcity of intermodal hinterland networks and related research is surprising considering the 2050 sustainability targets the UK set itself. Accordingly, this paper explores the …

Mapping A Hidden Terrane Boundary In The Mantle Lithosphere With Lamprophyres, Ah Dijkstra, C Hatch
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Lamprophyres represent hydrous alkaline mantle melts that are a unique source of information about the composition of continental lithosphere. Throughout southwest Britain, post-Variscan lamprophyres are (ultra)potassic with strong incompatible element enrichments. Here we show that they form two distinct groups in terms of their Sr and Nd isotopic compositions, occurring on either side of a postulated, hitherto unrecognized terrane boundary. Lamprophyres emplaced north of the boundary fall on the mantle array with eNd -1 to +1.6. Those south of the boundary are enriched in radiogenic Sr, have initial eNd values of -0.3 to -3.5, and are isotopically indistinguishable from similar-aged …

Determining The Dynamics Of Coarse Bedload Transport Using Passive Indirect Monitoring: Time-Dependent Variability At Event To Inter-Annual Scales, Pw Downs, Pj Soar
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
© The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2018. The dynamics of coarse bedload transport in rivers is governed by multiple hierarchical factors including catchment-scale controls on sediment production, annually variable hydroclimatic driving of segment-scale sediment supply, and reach-scale factors related to the interaction of hydraulic forces with channel morphology. Exploring hydroclimatic drivers can beneficially utilise passive sensors to record coarse bedload transport over extended time periods and in previously unattainable resolution. For the River Avon (Devon, UK), five-minute coarse bedload frequency data collected using seismic impact plates inherently records the instantaneous variability of bedload transport intensity, patterns of event-scale hysteresis …

UK Higher education has for many years been offered to students at different institution types, one such being colleges of further education. He offered at further education colleges differs in many ways from that offered to a university. One way in which it differs greatly is the mode of provision. Traditional university degrees typically a commitment to a named three-year programme of study. Provision through colleges differs as students typically enrol on a two-year associate degree, which they may then decide to top up to a full bachelor’s degree …

Increasing complexity in human-environment interactions at multiple watershed scales presents major challenges to sediment source apportionment data acquisition and analysis. Herein, we present a step-change in the application of Bayesian mixing models: Deconvolutional-MixSIAR (D-MIXSIAR) to underpin sustainable management of soil and sediment. This new mixing model approach allows users to directly account for the 'structural hierarchy' of a river basin in terms of sub-watershed distribution. It works by deconvoluting apportionment data derived for multiple nodes along the stream-river network where sources are stratified by sub-watershed. Source and mixture samples were collected from two watersheds that represented (i) a longitudinal mixed …
