Biogeochemical Controls On The Corrosion And Fate Of Depleted Uranium, Stephanie Handley-Sidhu Jan 2008

Biogeochemical Controls On The Corrosion And Fate Of Depleted Uranium, Stephanie Handley-Sidhu

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Depleted uranium (DU) is a by-product of the nuclear fuel industry and is used in antitank penetrators due to its high density, self-sharpening and pyrophoric properties. Military activities have left a legacy of DU waste in terrestrial and marine environments and presently there are no clean up procedures in place. In order to understand the fate of this DU, long term (500 days) microcosm experiments simulating key environments have been carried out for the first time to investigate the mechanisms and rates of DU corrosion as a function of the biogeochemical and environmental conditions. The corrosion of DU was investigated …

The Resistance Of An Established Profession Towards An Emergent Occupation, Richard William Goslin Jan 2008

The Resistance Of An Established Profession Towards An Emergent Occupation, Richard William Goslin

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This study examines the relationship between orthopaedic and podiatric surgeons which has formed since the NHS reforms of the 1990s facilitated the establishment of podiatric surgery as a mainstream health-care service. Relations between these two disciplines are considered against the traditional background of dominance of health-care by the medical profession. The study seeks to understand the resistance shown towards podiatric surgery by orthopaedic surgeons and to determine if there is a willingness among orthopaedic and podiatric surgeons, respectively, to develop a more satisfactory working relationship. Two methods of data collection were employed to gather information on the views of orthopaedic …

Stewards Of The Earth? : A Study Of Teenagers' Pro-Environmental Attitudes And Lifestyles In Devon, Uk And Malaga, Spain, Jennie Winter Jan 2008

Stewards Of The Earth? : A Study Of Teenagers' Pro-Environmental Attitudes And Lifestyles In Devon, Uk And Malaga, Spain, Jennie Winter

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Individual responses to sustainability are recognised as fundamental to progressing the sustainable development agenda. In order to raise awareness and support for sustainability, concerted programmes of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) have been promoted and ESD is now a core element of educational curricula in many countries, particularly in the developed world. One group of particular interest to educators and policy makers is teenagers. Their engagement with sustainability issues, both in rhetorical and participatory terms, is considered essential to both the short and long term infusion of sustainability into public consciousness. However, despite continuing endeavours to involve teenagers in the …

Chasing The Vote : Developments In The Ways Political Parties Conduct Election Campaigns, Timothy Andrew Jones Jan 2008

Chasing The Vote : Developments In The Ways Political Parties Conduct Election Campaigns, Timothy Andrew Jones

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The methods political parties use to engage the electorate during election campaigns undergo a continual process of re-evaluation and modification; this study seeks to further understanding of this process by proposing the concept of a toolkit of techniques from which those who plan campaigns make selections, based on the type of campaign and the resources they have available. Using data gathered from interviews of experienced campaigners, a case study from the 2007 local elections, and the author's own experience as a political campaigner, the development of campaigning is considered from the perspective of the candidate and campaigner 'on the ground'. …

The Unknown That What I Say Is Not What I Mean, Tomasz Wendland Jan 2008

The Unknown That What I Say Is Not What I Mean, Tomasz Wendland

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This work is a confession in front of both myself and the one who reads my words and looks at my images. It is unusual to confess with images, because they uncover what we hide with words. Through a body of visual arts practice completed between 2000 and 2007 and its accompanying written commentary and critical account, I have attempted to address notions of the "unknown". In this enquiry, the "unknown" is understood to be hidden between "what I say and what I mean", where, for example, consciousness has no access between drawing and intention, or between prediction and intuition. …

Musicology And Mediation: An Examination Of The Cultural Materialisms Of Raymond Williams And Pierre Bourdieu In Relation To The Fields Of Contemporary Music And Musicology, With A Case Study Of Arvo Part And Ecm, Tom Begbie Jan 2008

Musicology And Mediation: An Examination Of The Cultural Materialisms Of Raymond Williams And Pierre Bourdieu In Relation To The Fields Of Contemporary Music And Musicology, With A Case Study Of Arvo Part And Ecm, Tom Begbie

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis examines the usefulness of the work of Pierre Bourdieu and Raymond Williams for discussions of material mediation in musicology. In part I, I focus on Bourdieu's discussions of cultural production as set out in The Rules of Art and "The Field of Cultural Production", and reconstruct the terms of Williams's late theoretical project. In establishing the terms of these projects, I draw a parallel between their attempts to materialize the categories of Marx's superstructure - noting in Williams's subsequent use of a revised Marxist production paradigm a proximity to the work of Adorno - before noting the differences …

Speaking Of Gender, Language And Identity: Writing The Personal, Barbara Bridger Jan 2008

Speaking Of Gender, Language And Identity: Writing The Personal, Barbara Bridger

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis features a range of texts that exemplify my practice. They include experimental prose, poetry, hybrid forms of writing that merge theory and practice, and scripts for live performance and digital film. To these examples I apply an autobiographical writing method, one that simultaneously reflects and creates, in an enquiry designed to uncover the detail and complexity of my writing motivation through a discursive account of its context. In a process that acknowledges the centrality of language to the construction of female identity, I begin by exploring the importance of autobiography to both my writing and this thesis. Next …

Policing Partnerships: An Investigation Into The Police Response To Partnership Working In The Wake Of The 1998 Crime And Disorder Act, Stuart David Lander Jan 2008

Policing Partnerships: An Investigation Into The Police Response To Partnership Working In The Wake Of The 1998 Crime And Disorder Act, Stuart David Lander

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis is based upon empirical research, which explores how the police service in one Constabulary area has accommodated the mandate to work in crime prevention partnerships with other agencies, following the implementation of the 1998 Crime and Disorder Act. The focus is specifically upon crime and disorder reduction partnerships (CDRPs). The research is based upon a multi-method research design. It draws most heavily upon data obtained from semi-structured interviews with police officers holding varying experiences of crime prevention partnership working across one Constabulary area. It also analyses official documents, and draws upon the results of a short survey combined …

Investigation Into Land-Use Change In Two Contrasting Areas In The Nile Delta, Egypt, Rawad S. Echtaie

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Understanding land-use change in developing countries, particularly those situated in environmentally vulnerable and and semi-arid zones, is crucial given the considerable pressures arising due to rapid population growth, climate change and desertification. The purpose of this research was to investigate the main drivers affecting land-use change in the eastern part of the Nile Delta, Egypt in the last two decades. Two contrasting cities in the region were selected for detailed analysis. Almansourah is an ancient settlement relatively close to the Damietta branch of the Nile whereas Alzaqazig is a recent development and the surrounding area was reclaimed from the desert. …

A Sociological Critique Of 'Grand Narratives' In The History Of Hospice And Palliative Care, Mary Curtis Jan 2008

A Sociological Critique Of 'Grand Narratives' In The History Of Hospice And Palliative Care, Mary Curtis

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis is a sociological history and critique of hospice and palliative care: their goals, narratives, and social, clinical and ethical practices. Hospice developed in Britain as a result of and challenge to interventionist biomedicine within hospitals where dying came to be viewed as medical failure. From the mid twentieth century hospice was promoted as a 'philosophy of care' that had at its locus a concept of 'whole' person family care for people who are dying. For the first tune patients and then: relatives became the unit of care. Henceforth, hospice established for itself three major 'goals'; (1) hoUstic symptom …

Building Positive Peace? : A Gendered Analysis Of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 On Women, Peace And Security, Annette M. Elliott Jan 2008

Building Positive Peace? : A Gendered Analysis Of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 On Women, Peace And Security, Annette M. Elliott

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) forms part of the United Nations approach to international peacebuilding. Whereas the resolution has been critiqued in terms of its implementation, there is a gap in the existing analysis concerning a deeper critical understanding of gender and the significant link between the constructions of gender and cultures of violence and peace. Grounded in a theoretical framework of a gendered analysis of peacebuilding theory, the empirical research combines policy analysis and qualitative interviews in order to examine how the concept of gender is understood within peacebuilding policy and how this impacts on implementation. Using the principle …

Politicizing A Film Practice, Gary Anderson Jan 2008

Politicizing A Film Practice, Gary Anderson

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This is a practice-based Ph. D. in filmmaking and concerns the generation of a radical film practice. It is situated in the field of no-budget experimental film and video making and deploys a combination of deconstruction and critical perspectives of cultural production in the construction of its modus operandi. The contribution to knowledge is in two parts. First the bringing together in a film practice established and various knowledges from other areas; contemporary and historical experimental film and video, observational documentary and amateur film practices, specifically Home Movies, in connection to established but various extant modes of reading that material. …

Family And Other Relations A Thesis Examining The Extent To Which Family Relationships Shape The Relations Of Art., Penelope Dalton Jan 2008

Family And Other Relations A Thesis Examining The Extent To Which Family Relationships Shape The Relations Of Art., Penelope Dalton

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis is sited in contemporary issues concerning gender and identity in relation to the arts. It aims to examine the nature of the family and the extent to which relationships and identities in the family might be analogous to the relations of fine art; these include relations between the artist and the artwork, between what is defined as 'art' and what is not, between the artwork and the viewer. It also touches on some of the other, innumerable relationships encountered in the arts: relations of materials form, feeling, thinking and making. The thesis contains a discussion of the nature …

Musical Composition Focusing On The Quality Of Presence In Performance, Ruth Wiesenfeld Jan 2008

Musical Composition Focusing On The Quality Of Presence In Performance, Ruth Wiesenfeld

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This practice-based research into the quality of presence in performance explores a compositional approach that originates from the question of what might lead a person to seek musical or sounding utterance. It aims at opening the awareness-space towards a listening not only to the musical-acoustic event, but to the performer as a whole. Consequently different forms of notation and processes of rehearsing that address the psycho-physical constitution of a performer are investigated; a strong focus lies on the sensorimotor aspect of playing an instrument. The portfolio comprises fourteen pieces (for soloists, chamber ensembles and orchestra) as well as four collaborative …

On The Role Of Informativeness In Spatial Language Comprehension, Michele Burigo Jan 2008

On The Role Of Informativeness In Spatial Language Comprehension, Michele Burigo

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

People need to know where objects are located in order to be able to interact with the world, and spatial language provides the main linguistic means of facilitating this. However, the information contained in the description about objects locations is not the only message conveyed; there is evidence in fact that people carry out inferences that go beyond the simple geometric relation specified (Coventry & Garrod, 2004; Tyler & Evans, 2003). People draw inferences about objects dynamic and objects interaction, and these information become critical for the apprehension of spatial language. Among the inferences people draw from spatial language the …

Ais Operation For Effective Bridge Lookout, Hsu Hua-Zhi Jan 2008

Ais Operation For Effective Bridge Lookout, Hsu Hua-Zhi

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

The shipborne Automatic Identification System (AIS) supports its end-users with independent traffic information that is in addition to the information available from RADAR and visual lookout. AIS is able to provide similar traffic information to RADAR, however, RADAR is a standalone device whereas AIS relies on the data contributed by other AIS equipped targets. AIS has been mandatory bridge equipment onboard SOLAS ships since July 2004 and as a relatively new bridge system, a consensus among deck officers as to its effectiveness has yet to be reached. The potential of AIS to be a significant aid to bridge lookout necessitated …

Conducting Systematic Reviews For Social Policy: The Role Of Understanding Discourses In Methodological Development, Mark Pearson Jan 2008

Conducting Systematic Reviews For Social Policy: The Role Of Understanding Discourses In Methodological Development, Mark Pearson

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

This thesis uses a case study of the process of conducting a systematic review in the field of substance misuse in order to analyse critically how knowledge is cumulated for the purposes of informing social policy. The analysis is grounded in two areas of social research that are seldom drawn together; the methodological (in this instance, the work of the social research methodologist Donald Campbell) and the linguistic (in the form of a measured application of discourse analysis). By means of this dual approach it is proposed that a better understanding can be obtained not only of how systematic review …

Impact Of Metal Mining On The Water Quality In The Tamar Catchment, Krongkaew Mighanetara

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

This study discusses the effects of past mining activities on sediment and water quality in streams and rivers in the Tamar catchment. High trace element concentrations, both in water and sediments, were observed in streams and rivers draining areas associated with abandoned mine sites. Maximum concentrations were observed in the Gunnislake/Calstock mining district, where intense metalliferous mining took place during the 19th century. Mine waste from abandoned mine sites in this area contained up to 6.3% arsenopyrite, 5.8% pyrite, 0.3% chalcopyrite and 24% scorodite. As a result, high concentrations of trace elements of up to 180000 mg kg‾¹ As, 6500 …

On The Nature Of Fieldwork A Composer's Interdisciplinary Theory And Practice, Matthew Thomas Martin Jan 2008

On The Nature Of Fieldwork A Composer's Interdisciplinary Theory And Practice, Matthew Thomas Martin

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The following text serves to accompany a body of practical work in music (composing) and mark-making. The two elements, when taken together, are an illustration of the role which certain types of fieldwork developed by the author may offer the composer if adopted into the process of acoustic invention. The introduction sets forth the conditions in which such an approach to the relationship between the natural, the sonic and the visual becomes relevant and important. Ideas of interconnectivity are introduced and terms are defined. Chapter two deals with the ideas of connecting patterns and sets of relationships in more detail, …

The Halliday Report: In Pursuit Of A New Sentencing Framework Or A Catastrophic Failure?, Chivonne Boothe Jan 2008

The Halliday Report: In Pursuit Of A New Sentencing Framework Or A Catastrophic Failure?, Chivonne Boothe

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

In 2001 the Halliday Report, Making Punishments Work: A Review of the Sentencing Framework for England & Wales devised a sentencing framework where sentences – custodial and non-custodial - meant what they said, benefited offenders and society, and ultimately made sense. The new framework was designed to successfully rehabilitate offenders, reduce re-offending and reserve prison for those offenders that justify it by creating novel but ingenious ways of changing the attitudes and behaviours of offenders. The framework was to be one that generated public confidence. Changes were proposed of such magnitude that it was believed the reform would lead to …

Access To Justice - Rights Or Rations? Comparing European Legal Aid Systems In The Context Of A Shrinking Budgetary Environmentâ, Lynne Follett Jan 2008

Access To Justice - Rights Or Rations? Comparing European Legal Aid Systems In The Context Of A Shrinking Budgetary Environmentâ, Lynne Follett

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

The inspiration for this thesis was derived from a week spent in the family law department of a local solicitor's practice. The UK government's reforms to the legal aid system were about to be implemented and appeared to be affecting the work undertaken as well as the morale of the solicitors working there. The discussion reviews the recent and proposed reforms to legal aid in England and Wales and their effect on access to justice. A comparison is made with other legal aid systems within the EU, examining best practices and the rationale behind implementation of reforms in order to …

An Investigation About High School Mathematics Teachers' Beliefs About Teaching Geometry, Brenda Carol Strassfeld Jan 2008

An Investigation About High School Mathematics Teachers' Beliefs About Teaching Geometry, Brenda Carol Strassfeld

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

There continues to exist a dilemma about how, why and when geometry should be taught. The aim of this study was to examine high school mathematics teachers' beliefs about geometry and its teaching with respect to its role in the curriculum, the uses of manipulatives and dynamic geometry software in the classroom, and the role of proofs. In this study belief is taken as subjective knowledge (Furinghetti and Pehkonen, 2002). Data were collected from 520 teachers using questionnaires that included both statements that required responses on a Likert scale and open-ended questions. Also an intervention case study was conducted with …

The Reciprocating Joule Cycle Engine For Micro Combined Heat And Power Applications, Robert William Allen Jan 2008

The Reciprocating Joule Cycle Engine For Micro Combined Heat And Power Applications, Robert William Allen

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Micro CHP has been identified as a means of reducing the carbon dioxide emissions from household energy consumption. Large scale field trials undertaken in the UK, with systems internal to a single dwelling and based on Stirling engines, were disappointing because of the low thermal efficiencies of such engines. Alternative engines/devices with higher thermal efficiencies are currently being evaluated in Japan but such systems are external to the dwelling. The reciprocating Joule cycle engine is proposed as an engine for a micro CHP system because of its potential to be more thermally efficient than a Stirling engine and at least …

An Approach To Machine Development Of Musical Ontogeny, Marcelo Gimenes Jan 2008

An Approach To Machine Development Of Musical Ontogeny, Marcelo Gimenes

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

This Thesis pursues three main objectives: (i) to use computational modelling to explore how music is perceived, cognitively processed and created by human beings; (ii) to explore interactive musical systems as a method to model and achieve the transmission of musical influence in artificial worlds and between humans and machines; and (iii) to experiment with artificial and alternative developmental musical routes in order to observe the evolution of musical styles. In order to achieve these objectives, this Thesis introduces a new paradigm for the design of computer interactive musical systems called the Ontomemetical Model of Music Evolution - OMME, which …

Performance Of Privatised And Private Firms : Empirical Evidence From Egypt, Mohamed Bahaa El Din Mohamed M. M. Bekheit Jan 2008

Performance Of Privatised And Private Firms : Empirical Evidence From Egypt, Mohamed Bahaa El Din Mohamed M. M. Bekheit

Plymouth Business School Theses

Privatisation has been a major political and economic phenomenon over the past few decades, and researchers continue to target it for both theoretical and empirical work. The objective of this thesis is to evaluate the Egyptian experiment concerning its privatisation programme, and to determine whether this programme has affected the performance of privatised firms. Using 15 years of data, which cover the period 1990/1991 to 2004/2005; this thesis empirically investigates three main issues. Firstly, it examines whether the performance of privatised firms improves following privatisation through comparing pre- and postprivatisation performance in terms of profitability, operating efficiency, output, leverage and …
