A Mythography Of The Crossroads:How Is The Severance/Threshold/Return Progression In Both Mythology And Modern Wilderness Rites-Of-Passage Established Through Metaphor? An Enquiry Conducted Through Contemporary Storytelling Practice, Martin Shaw

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

How is the Severance/Threshold/Return progression in both mythology and modern wilderness rites-of-passage established through metaphor? An enquiry conducted through contemporary storytelling practice. This research examines the metaphorical structures within seven selected myths in relation to wilderness rites-of-passage, and the key thematic progression of Severance/Threshold/Return. These rites-of-passage are an essential component of an ongoing programme offered to the general public. The research is primarily creative in that the oral texts have been developed from extant myth over several years, and adapted to a variety of performance contexts. The evolution of these oral texts is examined in an analytical text, which draws …

Communicating The Unspeakable: Linguistic Phenomena In The Psychedelic Sphere, Diana R. Slattery Jan 2011

Communicating The Unspeakable: Linguistic Phenomena In The Psychedelic Sphere, Diana R. Slattery

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Psychedelics can enable a broad and paradoxical spectrum of linguistic phenomena from the unspeakability of mystical experience to the eloquence of the songs of the shaman or curandera. Interior dialogues with the Other, whether framed as the voice of the Logos, an alien download, or communion with ancestors and spirits, are relatively common. Sentient visual languages are encountered, their forms unrelated to the representation of speech in natural language writing systems. This thesis constructs a theoretical model of linguistic phenomena encountered in the psychedelic sphere for the field of altered states of consciousness research (ASCR). The model is developed from …

Eastern European Time-Based Art During And After Communism, Kenneth Mcbride Jan 2011

Eastern European Time-Based Art During And After Communism, Kenneth Mcbride

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Soviet-era Communism was a project of emergence that failed to realise its Utopian ambition. Nevertheless, it created an unprecedented simulacrum whose visual language was appropriated by a number of artists as a readymade. This artistic response to everyday reality shaped an unofficial narrative of the Communist epoch. Operating beyond the official realm these artists were subject to varying degrees of censorship, and their activities led to what became known as ‘non-official’ art. Non-official artists suffered from inferior materials, lack of exposure, and were forced to radicalize their methods of production. Without official support the everyday domestic realm and a diverse …

The Supervisory Assemblage: A Singular Doctoral Experience, Elizabeth Done Jan 2011

The Supervisory Assemblage: A Singular Doctoral Experience, Elizabeth Done

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

In this thesis, I apply Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari’s ontology of becoming to my own learning, thinking and writing. The adopted method - nomadic inquiry, is derived from the philosophising of Deleuze, whose concepts function as pedagogic values that I mobilise throughout my writing and perform – not merely explain, to problematise common perceptions of the thesis, supervision and doctoral experience. Deleuze resists models that inhibit context-specific creativity, yet I can readily identify the defining features of my own supervision: resolutely student-centred, facilitative of free experimentation, supportive of my becoming as an academic subject and the writing through which …

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis comprises a collection of short stories entitled Everything Beautiful is Far Away, supported by a commentary which explores ideas of self within the short story and locates my creative writing practice within the field of contemporary short fiction and theories of autobiography. The collection Everything Beautiful is Far Away is made up of eleven stories that experiment with a variety of forms, from rhyming flash fiction to the novella, and fairy tale to psychotherapy, and as a substantial example of original creative practice stands as the main body of my thesis. The accompanying critical element is divided into …

A Narrative In Relief - The Historiography Of English Modern Painting (1910-1915), From The 1910s To The 1950s, Carol Frances Brand Jan 2011

A Narrative In Relief - The Historiography Of English Modern Painting (1910-1915), From The 1910s To The 1950s, Carol Frances Brand

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The groups of painters in England who experimented with new visual expressions of modernity between 1910 and 1915 are the subject of this historiographical research. More precisely, the accounts of Vorticism, Bloomsbury post-Impressionism and the modern art of painters associated with Sickert, (principally the Camden Town Group), have been critically examined over a forty year period in order to trace the narrative of their place in contemporary art criticism and their entry into histories of what soon became the recent past. This textually-based methodology has produced an insight into the forces acting upon the critical reception of a particular period …

The Plymouth Community Justice Court And The Concepts Of Multi-Agency Problem-Solving And Community Engagement: A Process Review, Michelle Jolley Jan 2011

The Plymouth Community Justice Court And The Concepts Of Multi-Agency Problem-Solving And Community Engagement: A Process Review, Michelle Jolley

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The emergence of Community Justice Courts (CJC) in the UK is a relatively new approach to doing justice. Founded upon the broad principles of community justice they present a challenge to traditional criminal justice practice. This thesis is based on a qualitative ethnographic study, employing an interpretivist methodology to develop knowledge and understanding of the Plymouth CJC. Furthermore it sought to review three specific areas, firstly the operations of the CJC and whether these processes varied from those of traditional magistrates’ court, secondly the development and operationalisation of problem-solving multi-agency working, and thirdly the identification and implementation of community engagement …

Spin-Dependent Electron Transport In Nanomagnetic Thin Film Devices, Yun Zhou Jan 2011

Spin-Dependent Electron Transport In Nanomagnetic Thin Film Devices, Yun Zhou

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Spin-dependent electron transport in submicron/nano sized magnetic thin film devices fabricated using the optical lithography, e-beam lithography and focused ion beam (FIB) was investigated with the primary aim to find the ballistic magnetoresistance (BMR) in thin film nanoconstrictions. All experimental results were analysed in combination with micromagnetic simulations. The magnetisation reversal processes were investigated in a submicron half-pinned NiFe stripe with a microconstriction. An asymmetric MR curve was observed, and micromagnetic simulations verified it was due to the exchange-bias on the left side, which changed the magnetic switching mechanism. The effects of different pinning sites on the magnetisation switching and …

Volcanic Risk Assessment: Integrating Hazard And Social Vulnerability Analysis, Sara Louise Hayes Jan 2011

Volcanic Risk Assessment: Integrating Hazard And Social Vulnerability Analysis, Sara Louise Hayes

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The vulnerability of communities at risk from volcanic activity at Volcan Tungurahua, Ecuador and Mount Rainier in the USA provided the focus for this thesis. The research aimed to develop an integrated approach to risk assessments that combined both hazard and vulnerability analysis. In phase one, the study developed a novel methodology to assess volcanic threat that utilised previously published data. This semi-quantitative approach integrated measures of both hazard and exposure factors, allowing the relative threat to different communities to be ranked. By avoiding the complex quantitative analysis associated with traditional risk assessments of the multiple hazards associated with volcanic …

High In Situ Repeatability Of Behaviour Indicates Animal Personality In The Beadlet Anemone Actinia Equina (Cnidaria)., Mark Briffa, Julie Greenaway Jan 2011

High In Situ Repeatability Of Behaviour Indicates Animal Personality In The Beadlet Anemone Actinia Equina (Cnidaria)., Mark Briffa, Julie Greenaway

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

'Animal personality' means that individuals differ from one another in either single behaviours or suites of related behaviours in a way that is consistent over time. It is usually assumed that such consistent individual differences in behaviour are driven by variation in how individuals respond to information about their environment, rather than by differences in external factors such as variation in microhabitat. Since behavioural variation is ubiquitous in nature we might expect 'animal personality' to be present in diverse taxa, including animals with relatively simple nervous systems. We investigated in situ startle responses in a sea anemone, Actinia equina, to …

The Moisture Performance Of Straw Bale Construction In A Temperate Maritime Climate, Jim Carfrae Jan 2011

The Moisture Performance Of Straw Bale Construction In A Temperate Maritime Climate, Jim Carfrae

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

This thesis is an investigation into the moisture performance of straw bales used in the construction of buildings. The principle of taking bales of straw off the field and stacking them up on themselves to form the walls of a simple building is a practise that started over a hundred years ago. The modern form of this building method is more sophisticated, and is spreading world wide from its origins in the arid regions of America. Despite advances in modern methods of construction there has been concern and doubt over the suitability of straw bale for use as a building …

You Can't Go Home Again: The Place Of Tradition In "Firefly's" Dystopian-Utopia And Utopian-Distopia, R Brown Jan 2011

You Can't Go Home Again: The Place Of Tradition In "Firefly's" Dystopian-Utopia And Utopian-Distopia, R Brown

School of Art, Design and Architecture

Science fiction has long been a site in which utopian-dystopian visions have been articulated. This paper uses one exemplar of this genre as a springboard into a discussion of the desire for a return to origin and of flawed attempts to impose an image of that origin, with discursions into illustrations drawn from contemporary conditions. In opposition to the hegemonic and reductive tendencies inherent in such attempts, this paper proposes an alternative which engages with the everyday reality of life. Intrinsic to this proposition is that our traditions and utopias must be founded upon a continual (re)making in the everyday.

Third Way Architecture: Between Cybernetics And Phenomenology, S Murrani Jan 2011

Third Way Architecture: Between Cybernetics And Phenomenology, S Murrani

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This article in its essence aims to challenge and unfold, each at a time, two different fields of methodology – cybernetics and phenomenology – that have direct effects on the product of being and the process of becoming in architectural discourse. Furthermore, this article suggests a third way philosophy for architecture that relates notions of post-phenomenology and technoscience, and considers both to be equally vital to development and speculation within current architectural discourse. First, the history of each of the two fields – cybernetics and phenomenology – will be unveiled with a focus on exploring their impact upon architecture in …

Al-Khawaaldah Bani Hasan (Ash-Shu’ayree As-Salafi)Creditworthiness is a quality that is important to all stakeholders of an organisation, especially bondholders. It is posited that good corporate governance practices assist the confidence that stakeholders have in an organization’s ability to generate the strong cash flows that are needed to meet financial obligations, which in turn should enhance credit risk assessments. Much research has been conducted into …

The Problem With Health Measurement., Stefan J. Cano, Jeremy C. Hobart Jan 2011

The Problem With Health Measurement., Stefan J. Cano, Jeremy C. Hobart

Peninsula Medical School

In this review we discuss health measurement with a focus on psychometric methods and methodology. In particular, we examine some of the key issues currently facing the use of clinician and patient rating scales to measure the health outcomes of disease and treatment. We present three key facts and flag one crucial problem. First, the numbers generated by scales are increasingly used as the measurements of the central dependent variables upon which clinical decisions are frequently made. The rising profile of rating scales has significant implications for scale construction, evaluation, and selection, as well as for interpreting studies. Second, rating …

A Study On Wireless Communication Error Performance And Path Loss Prediction, Ismail Isnin Jan 2011

A Study On Wireless Communication Error Performance And Path Loss Prediction, Ismail Isnin

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

One channel model that characterises multipath fading effect of a wireless channel is called Flat Rayleigh Fading channel model. Given the properties of Flat Rayleigh Fading channel, an equation to find the capacity of a Flat Rayleigh fading channel with hard decision decoding is derived. The difference of power requirement to achieve the Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) capacity over a Flat Rayleigh Fading channel fading is found to increase exponentially with Es /N0 . Upper and lower bounds of error performance of linear block codes over a Flat Rayleigh Fading channel are also studied. With the condition that the …

Video Quality Prediction For Video Over Wireless Access Networks (Umts And Wlan), Asiya Khan Jan 2011

Video Quality Prediction For Video Over Wireless Access Networks (Umts And Wlan), Asiya Khan

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Transmission of video content over wireless access networks (in particular, Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) and Third Generation Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (3G UMTS)) is growing exponentially and gaining popularity, and is predicted to expose new revenue streams for mobile network operators. However, the success of these video applications over wireless access networks very much depend on meeting the user’s Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Thus, it is highly desirable to be able to predict and, if appropriate, to control video quality to meet user’s QoS requirements. Video quality is affected by distortions caused by the encoder and the wireless …

A Study Of Graphical Alternatives For User Authentication, Mohd Zalisham Jali Jan 2011

A Study Of Graphical Alternatives For User Authentication, Mohd Zalisham Jali

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Authenticating users by means of passwords is still the dominant form of authentication despite its recognised weaknesses. To solve this, authenticating users with images or pictures (i.e. graphical passwords) is proposed as one possible alternative as it is claimed that pictures are easy to remember, easy to use and has considerable security. Reviewing literature from the last twenty years found that few graphical password schemes have successfully been applied as the primary user authentication mechanism, with many studies reporting that their proposed scheme was better than their predecessors and they normally compared their scheme with the traditional password-based. In addition, …

Anomaly-Based Correlation Of Ids Alarms, Gina C. Tjhai Jan 2011

Anomaly-Based Correlation Of Ids Alarms, Gina C. Tjhai

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

An Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is one of the major techniques for securing information systems and keeping pace with current and potential threats and vulnerabilities in computing systems. It is an indisputable fact that the art of detecting intrusions is still far from perfect, and IDSs tend to generate a large number of false IDS alarms. Hence human has to inevitably validate those alarms before any action can be taken. As IT infrastructure become larger and more complicated, the number of alarms that need to be reviewed can escalate rapidly, making this task very difficult to manage. The need for …

Bayesian Modelling Of Ultra High-Frequency Financial Data, Golnaz Shahtahmassebi Jan 2011

Bayesian Modelling Of Ultra High-Frequency Financial Data, Golnaz Shahtahmassebi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The availability of ultra high-frequency (UHF) data on transactions has revolutionised data processing and statistical modelling techniques in finance. The unique characteristics of such data, e.g. discrete structure of price change, unequally spaced time intervals and multiple transactions have introduced new theoretical and computational challenges. In this study, we develop a Bayesian framework for modelling integer-valued variables to capture the fundamental properties of price change. We propose the application of the zero inflated Poisson difference (ZPD) distribution for modelling UHF data and assess the effect of covariates on the behaviour of price change. For this purpose, we present two modelling …
