Promoting Trustworthy File Sharing: A Community-Governed Dapp Approach, Chong-Gee Koa, Swee-Huay Heng, Ji-Jian Chin
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
In the cyber digital world, file sharing has become a cornerstone of global connectivity, facilitating the exchange of media, information, and resources among people worldwide. File sharing is already a norm in our daily lives, with many existing platforms allowing users to download shared content without verification or with only basic verification. Hence, the trustworthiness of the shared content is a concern. Meanwhile, blockchain technology has evolved over the last 15 years since its introduction, renowned for its decentralised, secure, and transparent system enabling efficient transactions, traceability across various industries. To address the mentioned open issue, we introduce a decentralised …

Designing Inclusive Immersive Experiences: Intergenerational Codesign Of Heritage And Underwater Extended Reality For Older Adults, Marius N. Varga, Oksana Hagen, Rory Baxter, Alejandro Veliz Reyes, Ray B Jones, Amir Aly, Dena Bazazian, Gaudl Swen
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Despite rapid advances in immersive Extended Reality technologies, creating inclusive and accessible experiencesfor older adults remains challenging. Many Extended Realityapplications fail to account for the physical, cognitive, andergonomic needs of older users, resulting in low engagement anddigital exclusion. Cultural heritage and underwater environmentsoffer rich contexts for meaningful interaction and wellbeing. This study explored how intergenerational codesign can informthe development of immersive Extended Reality applicationsfor older adults. Two case studies were undertaken within theICONIC project: a Heritage Extended Reality experience recreating Cotehele, a National Trust heritage site, and an UnderwaterTelepresence experience simulating marine environments. Theobjective was to identify design principles supporting accessibility, …

Background: Road traffic injury remains a significant global health challenge, causing over 1.2 million deaths and tens of millions of non-fatal injuries each year. In the United Kingdom (UK), more than 1,600 people died and nearly 30,000 sustained serious injuries on the roads in 2024. While improvements in vehicle design, road infrastructure, emergency response, and road user behaviour have contributed to a sustained reduction in road deaths over recent decades, outcomes for those injured remain variable, and post-collision care has received comparatively less research attention. The Road Injury Chain of Survival framework identifies five interdependent stages where timely, coordinated interventions …
The Gamification Of Online Dating: Exploring The Intersection Of Play, Choice, And Romance In Digital Spaces, Emma Taylor
The Gamification Of Online Dating: Exploring The Intersection Of Play, Choice, And Romance In Digital Spaces, Emma Taylor
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
The rise of online dating platforms has transformed the way individuals approach romantic relationships, with many users increasingly engaging in these platforms as a form of entertainment in addition to finding meaningful connections. Central to this shift is the growing phenomenon of gamification, the incorporation of game-like elements, into non-game contexts. This article proposes to explore the gamification of online dating, examining how these game mechanics shape user behaviours, influence romantic choices, and impact relationship outcomes. By analysing the ways in which dating platforms integrate game-inspired features, this study will also assess the implications of gamified experiences for the nature …
Emotive Immersion: Eeg-Driven Ai Art In Immersive Visual Spaces (Full Dome), Yuming Chen, Gianni Corino
Emotive Immersion: Eeg-Driven Ai Art In Immersive Visual Spaces (Full Dome), Yuming Chen, Gianni Corino
School of Art, Design and Architecture
This paper proposes a rethinking of the “Future Screen” through the integration of affective computing, generative AI, and immersive spatial display. As an advanced screen paradigm, the full dome environment transcends flat, passive interfaces and enables dynamic, multisensory, and emotionally adaptive media experiences (Von Chamier-Waite, 2013). Building on this potential, the research presents Coids, an interactive dome installation. In this work, real-time emotional states are captured using EEG-based emotion recognition. These inputs dynamically shape AI-generated visuals within a shared immersive setting.Drawing on theories of immersion, presence, AI generated visuals and affect, the study explores how physiological data, even from low-resolution …
Volumetric Video With Skateboarders: Creative Opportunities Of Working With An Emerging Screen Technology Beyond The Studio, Dani Landau, Diego Zamora
Volumetric Video With Skateboarders: Creative Opportunities Of Working With An Emerging Screen Technology Beyond The Studio, Dani Landau, Diego Zamora
School of Art, Design and Architecture
Volumetric video is an emerging moving image technology in which each pixel is recorded witha location in three dimensions. Volumetric videos are normally created in studios using rigs made upof multiple cameras with LiDAR sensors and computers that combine the moving images. We tookthis technology out of the studio to explore variations of this technique in public skateparks. We foundthat as the technology is still in developing stages there are creative constraints: the lidar cameras sense at a limited distance to the subject, the image is of a relatively low resolution, and there are often glitches in theimage. In our …

Objective: To explore the experiences, challenges and support needs of people with stroke and their household carers throughout the Philippines, and to inform the co-design of a community-based stroke support programme. Methods: A descriptive qualitative design was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 people with stroke and 20 household carers across six sites in …
Reimagining A Nexus Between Seaport And National Development: Sociotechnical Imaginaries Of Ghana’S Port Of Tema, Jonas Aryee, Casper Andersen, Annette Hansen
Reimagining A Nexus Between Seaport And National Development: Sociotechnical Imaginaries Of Ghana’S Port Of Tema, Jonas Aryee, Casper Andersen, Annette Hansen
Plymouth Business School
This article explores the evolving sociotechnical imaginaries (STIs) shaping Ghana’s Port of Tema, revealing how national development goals and global trade imperatives intersect in African port governance. Through analysis of policy documents, media discourse, and interviews, it identifies four overlapping phases in the evolution of these imaginaries: the industrial gateway era, neoliberal globalization, the rise of a transshipment hub, and the most recent phase of indigenous contestation and institutional resilience. Rather than replacing earlier visions, newer imaginaries build upon and hybridize older ones, creating both synergies and tensions. The study demonstrates that STIs at Tema have evolved through processes of …

Background: Patient and public involvement and engagement can improve the relevance and impact of research yet ‘impact’ is often framed narrowly around study findings rather than the experiences of those involved. Understanding how involvement affects individuals is important, particularly in areas such as mental health where there is significant potential for power differentials within the research process. The DeStress-II project co-developed a training resource to help primary care practitioners support people experiencing poverty-related mental distress. Community Partners with lived experience were integral to the project, contributing to training delivery, online resource co-production, and implementation analysis. This paper explores what supported …
Investigating The Potential Of Time-Varying Free Parameters In Equilibrium Shoreline Change Models Through Data Assimilation, Georgios Azorakos, Bruno Castelle, Déborah Idier, Vincent Marieu, Raimundo Ibaceta, Kristen D. Splinter, Stéphane Bertin, Gerd Masselink, Timothy Scott
Investigating The Potential Of Time-Varying Free Parameters In Equilibrium Shoreline Change Models Through Data Assimilation, Georgios Azorakos, Bruno Castelle, Déborah Idier, Vincent Marieu, Raimundo Ibaceta, Kristen D. Splinter, Stéphane Bertin, Gerd Masselink, Timothy Scott
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Equilibrium shoreline change models with calibrated, time-invariant free parameters have demonstrated good skill in hindcasting shoreline evolution at sites dominated by cross-shore sediment transport. However, their performance can be biased by the specific conditions present during the calibration period. In this study, a dual parameter-state ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) was applied to track non-stationarity in model free parameters at three sites along the west coast of Europe. Introducing time-varying parameters did not substantially improve performance relative to an already well-calibrated stationary model. Model skill improvement occurred mainly during the EnKF correction step, highlighting the potential of real-time data assimilation for …
Leveraging Transcranial Ultrasound Stimulation To Enhance Self-Regulation In Emotion And Sleep, Suraya Dunsford, Mica Komarnyckyj, Elsa Fouragnan
Leveraging Transcranial Ultrasound Stimulation To Enhance Self-Regulation In Emotion And Sleep, Suraya Dunsford, Mica Komarnyckyj, Elsa Fouragnan
School of Psychology
This Perspective article discusses the emerging potential of transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) as a non-invasive neuromodulatory technique for enhancing self-regulatory processes, particularly emotion and sleep regulation, in healthy individuals. Offering high spatial precision and the ability to target both cortical and deep brain regions, TUS uses focused ultrasound waves to induce acute and delayed effects on brain activity. We propose that combining TUS with neurofeedback methods and/or specific cognitive training exercises may capitalise on these neuroplastic effects, thereby augmenting and prolonging their impact to support lasting improvements in self-regulation. We focus on the domains of sleep and emotion regulation, where …

School of Nursing and Midwifery
Background: Long-term health conditions and multimorbidity are increasing globally, placing an unsustainable pressure on health care systems. Mobile health (mHealth) technologies enable the collection of patient-generated health data outside clinical settings, offering the potential to support personalized care and inform clinical decision-making. However, the ways in which mHealth patient data are being used in clinical practice remain unclear. Objective: This study aimed to map and synthesize the existing literature on how patient-generated mHealth data are reportedly being used and influencing clinical decision-making for adults with long-term conditions in an outpatient care setting. Methods: A narrative scoping review was conducted on …
Directional Reflection: Realising Its 'Practical Potential' At The University Level, Simon P. Brownhill
Directional Reflection: Realising Its 'Practical Potential' At The University Level, Simon P. Brownhill
Plymouth Interdisciplinary Education Open Journal
Reflection is ‘a foundational concept’ in higher education, yet its successful implementation often demands purposeful intervention and thoughtful scaffolding (Harvey et al., 2025, p.1). This Brief Communication explores the potential of Directional Reflection (Brownhill, 2025), a visual strategy that uses arrows to prompt students towards specific types of thinking. Recent dissemination activities of said strategy acknowledge the pressing need to balance the theory with the practice, identifying practical ways that Directional Reflection could be embraced by lecturers and students at the university level. Thus, this brief communication proposes an assortment of pedagogical ideas to nurture silent in-session communication, offer cohort …

Unmasking Oral Health Stigma: A Qualitative Scoping Review, J Doughty, J Booth, M Smith, K Saini, M Paisi, A Rodriguez, A Levine, C Bedos, V Muirhead, C Martins De Barros, C Freeborn
Peninsula Dental School
INTRODUCTION: Health-related stigma can limit access to care, impair adherence to treatment, and negatively impact mental health and quality-of-life. Oral health stigma, defined as stigma arising from oral conditions that diverge from sociocultural norms, operates through labelling, stereotyping, othering, and exclusion. Oral health stigma can lead to shame, diminished self-confidence, and avoidance of dental care, creating a self-perpetuating cycle of poor oral health and reinforcing internalised and anticipated stigma. While previous research has explored the social implications of oral appearance, little is known about the broader concept of oral health stigma or strategies to mitigate it.
METHODS: This scoping review …

Co-Production Of A Mobile Application For Parents Of Acutely Ill Children Under Five: ‘Ipoorly Child Symptom Checker, Sarah Neill, Amy Rathbone, John Downey, Monica Lakhanpaul, Matt Carey
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Acutely ill children under five years of age are frequent and increasing users of urgent and emergency care services despite there being no increase in acuity of presenting illnesses. This raises concerns about parents’ level of knowledge and confidence in assessing the severity of symptoms of acute illness, despite the abundance of digital information available. MethodBuilding on prior work to co-develop the content for a mobile app for parents of acutely ill children, we co-designed the iPoorly child symptom checker app using an experience based co-design methodology with seven parent and seven health professional patient and public involvement representatives. The …
