A Phenotypic And Genomic Investigation Of The Identity And Variation In The European Dark Bee (Apis Mellifera Mellifera), Victoria G Buswell
A Phenotypic And Genomic Investigation Of The Identity And Variation In The European Dark Bee (Apis Mellifera Mellifera), Victoria G Buswell
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Apis mellifera (the Western honey bee) is a predominantly human managed pollinator consisting of different evolutionary lineages each containing a number of subspecies. Apis mellifera is threatened by various factors for example, parasites, viruses and pesticide use. The native subspecies of the British Isles Apis mellifera mellifera is additionally threatened by introgression resulting from the importation of foreign subspecies perceived to have more desirable characteristics. This thesis investigates the integrity of Apis mellifera mellifera in the UK and how that can be assessed. Initially, introgression levels over time in a conservation program were assessed. This revealed temporal decreases in introgression, …
The Application Of Habitat Suitability Modelling To Mapping Vme Distribution In The Deep Sea To Inform Spatial Management, Kyran Graves
The Application Of Habitat Suitability Modelling To Mapping Vme Distribution In The Deep Sea To Inform Spatial Management, Kyran Graves
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
As the development of new technologies continues, so do industrial activities. As a result, such industries can extract natural resources and use the marine environment at deeper and deeper depths, for example, fisheries, oil and gas, submarine cabling, and – the latest emergence – deep-sea mining. Despite these developments, the majority of the deep ocean, including national waters and the High Seas, remains unmapped. The absence of data across large swathes of the deep sea means that conducting adequate environmental impact assessments when new activities are proposed is difficult, and what data is available is often sparse. Predictive habitat models …
Evaluating The Bude Water Vole Reintroduction Project And The Factors Which Determined The Successes And Failures, Teagen Louise Hill
Evaluating The Bude Water Vole Reintroduction Project And The Factors Which Determined The Successes And Failures, Teagen Louise Hill
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Water voles (Arvicola amphibius), once a widespread species in Britain, became the fastest declining British mammal due to habitat fragmentation and North American mink (Neovison vison) introduction. Bude catchment (North Cornwall, England) was the location of the first water vole release project in Cornwall and has been closely monitored since the first releases in 2013. Latrines, being the most accurate field sign, were recorded twice a year, alongside burrows and feeding signs, giving an indication to the presence of voles in and around the release locations. In the Bude release catchment the presence of water voles was strongly correlated with …
Investigating The Microbiota Associated With Maerl Beds Located In The Fal Estuary, Cornwall, Anthony Scales
Investigating The Microbiota Associated With Maerl Beds Located In The Fal Estuary, Cornwall, Anthony Scales
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
The microbiota of maerl has the potential to contain diverse communities of bacteria which are thought to aid in maintaining maerl health and potentially be a driving factor in the settlement and development of ecological and economical important bi-valve species. However, little is currently known regarding the composition and structure of these communities, leading to uncertainty of their importance and their direct association to maerl beds. Using 16s amplicon sequencing analysis, the bacterial community composition associated with live and dead maerl (Phymatolithon calcareum) has been examined and compared to the communities associated with those of the surrounding environment - adjacent …
An Interdisciplinary Assessment Of The Mud Crab Scylla Serrata As A Sustainable Livelihood Resource In Southwest India, Elina Apine
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Fishing and aquaculture are important income-generating activities for coastal communities in India. However, the challenges of climate change and overexploitation have prompted the exploration of new, alternative, sustainable, target species that previously have received little attention. This thesis considers the potential of the mud crab Scylla serrata as a sustainable livelihood resource for local communities in southwest India where currently crab fishing and, particularly, farming is less common compared to southeast India. As fisheries and aquaculture are inherently complex social-ecological systems affected both by biological and socio-economic factors, this thesis has taken an interdisciplinary approach to identify the main barriers …
Synergistic Effects Of A Domestic (Thiacloprid Based) Neonicotinoid Pesticide And Nitrogen, Phosphorus And Potassium Fertiliser On Common Earthworms (Lumbricus Terrestris)., Tristan Holmes
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Neonicotinoids are designed to target insect pests, but their extensive use and long persistence in soils mean that non-target soil organisms such as earthworms are likely to be chronically exposed to them. The common use of neonicotinoids in agricultural systems makes them highly likely to come into contact with other agro-chemicals that may give rise to synergistic effects. Chronic exposure of common earthworm (Lumbricus terrestris) to neonicotinoids in single or combined use with inorganic NPK fertiliser may pose problems that are not accounted for in most biological risk assessments under laboratory conditions. To assess the impacts of such chronic exposure …

Evaluation Of The Anticancer And Anti-Inflammatory Potential Of The Brown Seaweed Cystoseira, Ahmad A Farag Mansur
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Cystoseira is abundant in bioactive chemicals that have been emphasized for their pharmacological value as plentiful and typically safe alternatives, offering a viable technique for treating cancer and inflammatory diseases. However, evaluating the effect of seasonality and extraction methods on Cystoseira chemical composition and cytotoxicity activity are still not thoroughly investigated. This study investigates the effect of seasonal variations and extraction methods of the Cystoseira extracts on the chemical composition and cytotoxicity activity on human cancer cell lines. C. tamariscifolia, C. crinita and C. compressa, were collected from the UK and Libya and colourimetric techniques were used to measure the …
The Potential Impact Of Macroalgal Generated Hydrogen Peroxide Levels On Co-Occurring Organism In Rock Pools, Agapery Yoane Pattinasarany
The Potential Impact Of Macroalgal Generated Hydrogen Peroxide Levels On Co-Occurring Organism In Rock Pools, Agapery Yoane Pattinasarany
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Abstract Macroalgae have been identified as a potential source of ROS (e.g., hydrogen peroxide) in some rock pools and enclosed habitats; the accumulation of ROS may be harmful to other organisms. Although some studies have found vulnerability to these ROS, there has been little research on the potential impact of photosynthesis-induced oxidative stress on organisms living in rock pools. The aims of this study were to investigate the levels of hydrogen peroxide produced by macroalgae and to assess the effect of similar levels of H2O2 on a rock-pool resident, the snakelocks anemone. The objective of the first experimental chapter was …
Snake Community Ecology And Conservation In Cusuco National Park, Honduras, George Lonsdale
Snake Community Ecology And Conservation In Cusuco National Park, Honduras, George Lonsdale
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
The Mesoamerican biodiversity hotspot is threatened with agriculture related deforestation and global climate change, both of which drive widespread changes in forest composition. As the forests change, so too does the community of animals they can support; of which many reptiles have evolved micro-niches specific to these forests. Studying how these anthropogenic pressures affect the assemblages of animals that can persist there, could be vital in understanding how biodiversity will be affected on a global scale. Cusuco National Park (CNP), Honduras, is one of the most important protected sites worldwide for herpetofauna biodiversity, due to having such a high diversity …
Can You See Me, Or Can You Smell Me? An Investigation Into Information Transfer In Betta Splendens, Alex Daniel Lynch
Can You See Me, Or Can You Smell Me? An Investigation Into Information Transfer In Betta Splendens, Alex Daniel Lynch
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Visual communication in Betta splendens has been studied in great detail. Chemical information transfer in this species has been studied less, and the interaction between chemical and visual information transfer less still. Betta may have a need for chemical information transfer; a need which is often neglected when housing this species in isolation from conspecifics. There is evidence that many fish species communicate using visual signals and spy on one another using chemical cues. Which type of information transfer is important and how they interact in which social context is less clear. Eavesdropping and mate choice has been studied extensively …
A Step Towards Automating Real-Time Collection Of Ecological Data On Observational Platforms : A Pilot Study On Deep-Sea Benthic Species Syringammina Fragilissima, Erin Browne
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Despite current efforts to study deep-sea life, there is a dependency on technological advancements to asses it at a scale and pace required to inform effective management and conservation. Data collection platforms, such as Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) are routinely applied to studying the deep sea due to their ability to collect large image-based datasets. Thus, data collection in the deep sea is becoming less of a problem in comparison to data interpretation, where terabytes of video data is collected during expeditions and manual interpretation of this is currently the standard procedure. Deep learning (DL), a sub-field of artificial intelligence …
Tackling Big Data Variety Using Metadata, Georgios Vranopoulos
Tackling Big Data Variety Using Metadata, Georgios Vranopoulos
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
The creation of new knowledge from manipulating and analysing existing knowledge is one of the primary objectives of any cognitive system. Out of the Big Data governing Vs, namely Volume, Velocity, Variety, Veracity, Validity, Volatility and Value, the first three are considered the primary ones. Most of the effort on Big Data research has been focussed upon Volume and Velocity, while Variety, “the ugly duckling” of Big Data, is often neglected and difficult to solve. A principal challenge with Variety is being able to understand and comprehend the data in gaining insight. Organisations have been investing in analytics relying on …
The Neoliberal Game: An Critical Analysis Of Children's Non Competitive Grassroots Football, Grace Gallacher
The Neoliberal Game: An Critical Analysis Of Children's Non Competitive Grassroots Football, Grace Gallacher
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
This thesis explores the propensity for harms throughout children’s non-competitive football. Adopting ethnographic approaches this project follows a team of under 9’s non-competitive team in a SW FA league, it analyses their private social media page and conducted 18 semi-structured interviews with life-long players, parents, coaches and referees. It advances a critical criminology of sport by presenting an alternative framework to Elias and the Civilising process by using contemporary critical criminology, namely ultra-realism and deviant leisure. By using ultra-realism and deviant leisure this study examines the underlying systemic harm which comes from the neoliberal environment of sport, including children’s non-competitive …
Solo Auto/Biographical Theatre: Towards A Process Of Self-Transformation, Morris Isaac Cohen
Solo Auto/Biographical Theatre: Towards A Process Of Self-Transformation, Morris Isaac Cohen
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
The concept of performance as a transformational experience is not unfamiliar in academic literature; Heddon (2008), Schechner (2013) and Zarrilli (2020) have all written about different aspects of transformations in theatre and performance, including the personal, the social and the political. The specific focus of this Practice as Research PhD is self-transformation and auto/biographical performance. It asks how making, devising and performing a solo auto/biographical piece of work might be a transformational experience for the performer. By transformation, the research refers to an inner shift in perspective on outer circumstances or events, or a change in meaning-making for and by …

Diagrams Of Disturbance: Conceptual Diagrams And The Production Of A Personal Diagram Poetry., Russell Evans
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
Russell Evans Title: Diagrams of Disturbance: conceptual diagrams and the production of a personal diagram poetry. This thesis is a pursuit of a personal diagram poetry, with a submission of part creative work, part critical exploration of selected diagram poetry over the past 50 years. I examine my own work and that of pioneering diagram poet Jim Rosenberg as variations of the conceptual diagram, and explore wider examples in the work of contemporary visual poets, arriving at a diagrammatics that creates systems of thought from modalities of materiality, spatiality and iconography. I follow Foucault and Deleuze’s pursuit of the diagram …
Black Artists And Federal Muralism In New Deal Chicago: An Examination Of The Politics And Ideologies Of African-American Muralists Under The New Deal: The Illinois Federal Art Project As Case Study., James Cuffe

James Cuffe Black Artists and Federal Muralism in New Deal Chicago: An examination of the Politics and Ideologies of African-American Muralists under the New Deal: The Illinois Federal Art Project as Case Study. This thesis provides an examination of the relationship between federal muralism and African-American art under the Illinois Federal Art Project. The exploration of the murals that were undertaken by two of Chicago’s best-known African American painters of their day, Archibald J. Motley Jr. and Charles W. White provide a useful basis for analysis. The murals also provide new insights which formulate a worthwhile contribution to current historiography. …
‘People Not Profits’: Hawaiian Cultural Nationalism And Protest Against The United States, 1968-1980, Emily May Hough
‘People Not Profits’: Hawaiian Cultural Nationalism And Protest Against The United States, 1968-1980, Emily May Hough
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
Since the early nineteenth century, United States colonialism has transformed the Hawaiian Islands from an independent sovereign nation into an American controlled state. In Hawai’i, colonialism is largely represented through the appropriation of culture, people, and land for the benefit of the tourist industry, in addition to the control of land for military use and urban development. In this study, the ways in which the United States has exploited Hawaiian culture, people, and land and the resulting opposition against it is analysed, to demonstrate the effects of colonialism on Hawai'i and the ways Hawaiian people adapted to resist it. This …
Influence And Innovation: Metapainting Between The Collection And The Workshop In Seventeenth-Century Spain And The Netherlands, Robyn Burley
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
The phenomenon of repetition in the history of art has been the subject of numerous independent studies. For George Kubler, all artworks could be sorted within a linear chronological sequence of primes, replications, and mutations in order to address a particular visual problem. In contrast, outside the realm of mechanical reproductions, the anachronistic assembly of contemporary and historical quotations from existing visual models was suggested by Alexander Nagel and Christopher Wood as simply being a part of the visual mechanics of an image. Nagel and Wood thereby defined the terms substitution and performance to categorize the shift in the perception …
Robert Rauschenberg And Modernism’S (Other) Masculinity, Harry Trepess
Robert Rauschenberg And Modernism’S (Other) Masculinity, Harry Trepess
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
My project is concerned with understanding and identifying the possibility of self-censorship, within a queer theory framework, in Robert Rauschenberg's series of Combine works. Starting out by understanding ideas and theoretical concepts behind censorship (specifically Self-censorship, whether subliminal or acknowledged), through the work of previous scholars. Helping to differentiate the various forms censorship can take, to better establish a definition of what it means to self-censor. Which is vital for the ability of identifying the possible presence of this within Rauschenberg’s practice during the period he created the Combines. Previous iconographical readings, within a queer theory framework, should form a …

The Genetic Diversity And Distribution Of Two Endangered Pit Vipers (Bothriechis Marchi And Cerrophidion Wilsoni) Within Cusuco National Park, Honduras, Debbie Starbuck
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
The current extinction rate is being increasingly recognised as an escalating issue, with observations still indicating that humans are the leading cause of a sixth mass extinction. Cloud forests in particular are home to a variety of threatened species, however, many of these forests are highly fragmented resulting in many species and populations existing in isolation. These forests have become centres of endemism for many species, leading to a high representation within global biodiversity hotspots and “irreplaceable” protected areas. This study primarily investigates the genetic diversity and distribution of two recently re-classified, sympatric pit vipers (Bothriechis marchi and Cerrophidion wilsoni) …
Competing For Seafaring Labour: Social Security And Agency Employment In Chinese Shipping, Gang Chen, Lijun Tang
Competing For Seafaring Labour: Social Security And Agency Employment In Chinese Shipping, Gang Chen, Lijun Tang
Plymouth Business School
This paper discusses one strategy that Chinese crewing agencies adopt to compete with eachother in the global seafarer labour supplying market. This strategy is related to Chineseseafarers’ social insurance participation. It shows that crewing agencies utilised a dualworkforce – ‘company-owned seafarers’ and ‘externally hired seafarers’. Externally hiredseafarers, though in precarious employment, are offered higher salaries in place of socialinsurance coverage. By contrast, company-owned seafarers are paid less, though enjoy socialinsurance arranged by agencies. This strategy serves to segment the seafarer labour market, conceal the level playing field, and help agencies recruit seafarers cost-effectively, though inviolation of labour rights. This paper argues …

Revisiting The Innovation–Export Entry Link Through A Configuration Approach, Carmen Lopez, Haddoud M Yacine, Dulekha Kasturiratne
Plymouth Business School
Findings on the innovation–export entry nexus remain inconclusive, which may be attributable to methodological issues. Most research has focused on the separate effects of single predictors and has investigated only one or two types of innovation. However, firms’ exporting behavior is complex, and is likely to be determined by interactions between innovation types. Drawing on resource orchestration theory, we adopt a configuration approach to uncover combinations of innovation types (considered here as resources) associated with exporting, rather than investigating them in isolation. The study incorporates four types of innovation: product, process, organizational and marketing innovation. The findings from a sample …

Policy Making For Sharks And The Role And Contribution Of Non-Governmental Organisations In The Fulfilment Of International Legal Obligations, Lydia Koehler, Jason Lowther
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
We propose a policy cycle for elasmobranch conservation and management and assessed the role and contribution of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) within this cycle on a case study basis for the Mediterranean region. Following a review of shark-related and relevant legal obligations under international and regional instruments, we classified them into ten focus areas: Capacity building, Conservation measures, Cooperation, Education and Awareness, Monitoring, Policy development and integration, Regulation, Reporting, Research, and Sustainable Management. Based on surveys and a supplementary, web-based research, we found that NGOs contribute substantially to the implementation stage of the proposed policy cycle and fulfil obligations under various …

A Case For Openness – Book Publishing And The Role Of Amazon, Antje Kreutzmann-Gallasch, Simone Schroff
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
The presence of Amazon is ubiquitous, especially in the online bookstore and e-book market. The introduction of the “Kindle” further cemented Amazon’s dominant position and business model in the market, having negative implications for authors, publishers and consumers. Publishers have less control over setting the price to have access to Amazon’s customer base. This will affect the authors’ remuneration and attribution. On the other hand, Kindle users are locked-in consumers, limited to Amazon’s e-book offering. This not only affects consumer choice but also reinforces Amazon’s market power due to the significant network effects. The European Commission attempted to increase competition …

Supporting Adherence To Physical Activity In People With Multiple Sclerosis, Rachel Dennett
School of Health Professions Theses
Background The benefits of exercise and physical activity for people with multiple sclerosis are well recognised, as are the challenges faced by many in adhering to these activities over the long term. Adherence is considered by some to be the single most important modifiable factor affecting outcome. With years lived with disability increasing and healthcare resources limited, the need to develop and implement effective and acceptable interventions and support people with adherence to physical activity is pressing. Aim This integrative summary presents work from three related areas regarding exercise and physical activity in people with multiple sclerosis. The body of …
