Clinician’S Perspectives In Using Head Impulse-Nystagmus-Test Of Skew For Acute Vestibular Syndrome: Uk Experience, Charlotte L. Warner, Lisa Bunn, Nehzat Koohi, Gunnar Schmidtmann, Jennifer Freeman, Diego Kaski
School of Health Professions
Background Acute vestibular syndrome (AVS) features continuous dizziness and may result from a benign inner ear disorder or stroke. The head impulse-nystagmus-test of skew (HINTS) bedside assessment is more sensitive than brain MRI in identifying stroke as the cause of AVS within the first 24 hours. Clinicians’ perspectives of the test in UK secondary care remains unknown. Here, we explore front-line clinicians’ perspectives of use of the HINTS for the diagnosis of AVS.Methods Clinicians from two large UK hospitals who assess AVS patients completed a short online survey, newly designed with closed and open questions. Results Almost half of 73 total …

Future Climate Change Conditions May Compromise Metabolic Performance In Juveniles Of The Mud Crab Scylla Serrata, Elina Apine, Madhu K. Mani, Praveen Rai, Indrani Karunasagar, Lucy M. Turner
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Research characterising the effects of future climate change on the marine environment remains heavily focussed on that of temperate regions and organisms. Furthermore, little is known of these effects on the early life stages of many marine species. Tropical regions are already experiencing an increase in sea surface temperature and decrease in sea surface salinity, conditions favoured by pathogenic bacteria such as Vibrio spp. The early life stages of crabs are known to be particularly vulnerable to both the direct physiological effects of climate change and exposure to harmful microorganisms, yet there are limited data on these effects on juveniles …

‘I Don't Like Uncertainty, I Like To Know’: How And Why Uveal Melanoma Patients Consent To Life Expectancy Prognostication, Sl Brown, Pl Fisher, A Morgan, C Davies, Et Al
School of Psychology
Background Technological advances have led to cancer prognostication that is increasingly accurate but often unalterable. However, a reliable prognosis of limited life expectancy can cause psychological distress. People should carefully consider offers of prognostication, but little is known about how and why they decide on prognostication. Using uveal melanoma (UM) patients, we aimed to identify (i) how and why do people with UM decide to accept prognostication and (ii) alignment and divergence of their decision-making from conceptualizations of a ‘well-considered’ decision. Methods UM provides a paradigm to elucidate clinical and ethical perspectives on prognostication, because prognostication is reliable but prognoses …

Clarifying The Impact Of Corporate Governance And Intellectual Capital On Financial Performance: A Longitudinal Study Of Deutsche Bank (1957–2019), T Nawaz, O Ohlrogge
Plymouth Business School
This article empirically examines the nexuses between corporate governance, intangible resources, CEO traits, and financial performance. In contrast to prior research, this study examines these relationships in a longitudinal manner focusing on Deutsche Bank for the 1957–2019 period. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first of its kind. Based on a novel hand collected dataset, our analysis suggests a significant positive relationship between intangible assets i.e., intellectual capital efficiency and financial performance measured by, return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE). Our results further suggest that human capital efficiency drive the financial performance of …

China is undertaking effective actions to adhere to wider international standards with better consideration of the notion of authenticity, collective memory, identity, and the sense of belonging. Besides the traditional participatory management discussions, scholars are also interested in finding out how the ICTs can encourage and enable new forms of engagement with heritage in different cultural contexts. The article offers an innovative approach to understanding the value of community participation in order to obtain a more sustainable way for integrative approaches in cultural heritage management. It focuses on the identification of criteria for the evaluation of Digital Community Engagement (DCE) …

Cohort Profile: The Green And Blue Spaces (Gbs) And Mental Health In Wales E-Cohort, Da Thompson, Rs Geary, Fm Rowney, R Fry, Et Al
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Why was the cohort set up? The Green Blue Spaces (GBS) e-cohort, funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), was established to understand the impact of green and blue spaces (GBS) on mental health and wellbeing.1 The importance of GBS for mental health has been highlighted particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.2 We processed opensource environmental data and Ordnance Survey data to create residence-level, longitudinal environment metrics for Wales, UK. These were linked to anonymised, administrative, routinely collected National Health Service (NHS) electronic health records. The cohort has individual-level linkage to a subgroup who were surveyed (cross-sectionally) to examine …

Challenges Of Incorporating Digital Health Technology Outcomes In A Clinical Trial: Experiences From Pd Stat, Jacob O. Day, Stephen Smith, Alastair J. Noyce, Jane Alty, Alison Jeffery, Rebecca Chapman, Camille Carroll
Peninsula Medical School
Digital health technologies (DHTs) have great potential for use as clinical trial outcomes; however, practical issues need to be addressed in order to maximise their benefit. We describe our experience of incorporating two DHTs as secondary/exploratory outcome measures in PD STAT, a randomised clinical trial of simvastatin in people with Parkinson’s disease. We found much higher rates of missing data in the DHTs than the traditional outcome measures, in particular due to technical and software difficulties. We discuss methods to address these obstacles in terms of protocol design, workforce training and data management.

This paper provides a roadmap for engaging in cross-cultural, developmental research in practical, ethical, and community-engaged ways. To cultivate the flexibility necessary for conducting cross-cultural research, we structure our roadmap as a series of questions that each research program might consider prior to embarking on cross-cultural examinations in developmental science. Within each topic, we focus on the challenges and opportunities inherent to different types of study designs, fieldwork, and collaborations because our collective experience in conducting research in multiple cultural contexts has taught us that there can be no single “best practice”. Here we identify the challenges that are unique …

Major invasions of Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois volitans and P. miles) are underway in the Western Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. While the establishment of lionfish in the Western Atlantic is perhaps the most well-studied marine fish invasion to date, the rapidly expanding invasion in the Mediterranean is more recent and has received less attention. Here we review and synthesize successes and failures from two decades of lionfish management in the Western Atlantic to give policy recommendations for their management in the Mediterranean. Two failed approaches that were attempted multiple times in the Western Atlantic and that we advise against …

The Southern Ocean paleoceanography provides key insights into how iron fertilization and oceanic productivity developed through Pleistocene ice-ages and their role in influencing the carbon cycle. We report a high-resolution record of dust deposition and ocean productivity for the Antarctic Zone, close to the main dust source, Patagonia. Our deep-ocean records cover the last 1.5 Ma, thus doubling that from Antarctic ice-cores. We find a 5 to 15-fold increase in dust deposition during glacials and a 2 to 5-fold increase in biogenic silica deposition, reflecting higher ocean productivity during interglacials. This antiphasing persisted throughout the last 25 glacial cycles. Dust …

Twice Exceptionality In Neoliberal Education Cultures: Implications For Special Educational Needs Coordinators, Elizabeth J. Done, Yunus Demir
Twice Exceptionality In Neoliberal Education Cultures: Implications For Special Educational Needs Coordinators, Elizabeth J. Done, Yunus Demir
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
‘Twice exceptionality’ describes the coexistence of a learning difficulty or disability (SEN/D) and exceptional performance in one area of learning. A popular discourse around autism and savantism in the United States promotes a hierarchical differentiation of the ‘twice exceptional’ based on measured intelligence and commodifies support for this group. Such support is designed to appeal to a neoliberal ethos of seeking competitive advantage in a marketised system. Alternatively, special educational needs co-ordinators (SENCOs) could raise awareness and promote a non-hierarchical understanding of ‘twice exceptionality’ in schools, thereby highlighting what is missed when allegedly science-based discourses become hegemonic within education and …

Investigation On A Spring-Integrated Mechanical Power Take-Off System For Wave Energy Conversion Purpose, J Wu, L Qin, N Chen, C Qian, S Zheng
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
In this work, a mechanical power take-off system (PTO) is proposed to be installed in a small-scale wave energy converter (WEC) to transfer wave power to electricity. Two pairs of one-way bearings are respectively embedded into two transmission chains to transfer bidirectional oscillation of the primary mover to unidirectional rotation of the generator. In addition to a flywheel mounted on the output shaft, a spring is integrated into each transmission chain to further smooth the generator speed. The working principle of the PTO is discussed in detail, including the situation of the PTO at different status combinations of the one-way …

Rewilding The Sea? A Rapid, Low Cost Model For Valuing The Ecosystem Service Benefits Of Kelp Forest Recovery Based On Existing Valuations And Benefit Transfers, Chris Williams, Sian Rees, Emma V. Sheehan, Matthew Ashley, William Davies
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Kelp forests and seagrasses are important carbon sinks that are declining globally. Rewilding the sea, through restoring these crucial habitats, their related biodiversity and ecosystem contributions, is a movement and concept, gathering pace in the United Kingdom and globally. Yet understanding of the economic costs and benefits for setting areas of the sea aside—and removing some human impacts from them—is not well understood. The potential benefits and distributional impacts on marine users and wider society is critical to make evidence based decisions. Ensuring that areas of the sea recover, and that the impacts (both positive and negative) are understood, requires …

Professionalism And Dental Education: In Search Of A Shared Understanding, Sally Hanks
Peninsula Dental School
Professionalism has profound historical origins; however, the current health care environment in the UK dental sphere is changing, which presents new professional dilemmas that require continued learning and debate. Professionalism is a key aspect of the education of dental students and the lifelong learning and development of dental practitioners. However, 'being' professional can be challenging because while it is recognised as a social good, there is much debate on what professionalism means and how best it can be learned and assessed. Since 2017, the UK Council for the Dental Teachers of Professionalism, consisting of educators from UK dental schools and …

The Open Perimetry Initiative was formed in 2010 with the aim of reducing barriers to clinical research with visual fields and perimetry. Our two principal tools are the Open Perimetry Interface (OPI) and the visualFields package with analytical tools. Both are fully open source. The OPI package contains a growing number of drivers for commercially available perimeters, head-mounted devices, and virtual reality headsets. The visualFields package contains tools for the analysis and visualization of visual field data, including methods to compute deviation values and probability maps. We introduce a new frontend, the opiApp, that provides tools for customization for visual …
