The Importance Of Self‑Efficacy And Negative Affect For Neurofeedback Success For Central Neuropathic Pain After A Spinal Cord Injury, Krithika Anil

School of Health Professions

EEG‑based neurofeedback uses mental behaviours (MB) to enable voluntary self‑modulation of brain activity, and has potential to relieve central neuropathic pain (CNP) after a spinal cord injury (SCI). This study aimed to understand neurofeedback learning and the relationship between MB and neurofeedback success. Twenty‑five non‑CNP participants and ten CNP participants received neurofeedback training (reinforcing 9–12 Hz; suppressing 4–8 Hz and 20–30 Hz) on four visits. Participants were interviewed about the MB they used after each visit. Questionnaires examined the following factors: self‑efficacy, locus of control, motivation, and workload of neurofeedback. MB were grouped into mental strategies (a goal‑directed mental action) …

Exploring The Contemporary Moon Under Water Through Illustration: Nostalgia And The Power Of The Image, Stephanie Black

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This article uses images from the visual essays produced for Plume of Feathers, an audio-visual project, to examine the notion of ‘reflective nostalgia’ as an attitude towards meaning-making within image creation, in particular illustration that can counter certain political uses of images that present a restorative–nostalgic world view. The project at the core of the article is concerned with the decline of public houses and their social function in the UK. However, the image of the pub is embroiled within the visual rhetoric related to the UK’s (2016) Brexit referendum. This article explores the ways in which the illustrated image …

Travel recommendation agents have been a helpful tool for travelers in their decision-making for destination choices. It has been shown that sparsity can significantly impact on the accuracy of recommendation agents. The COVID-19 outbreak has affected the tourism and hospitality industry of almost all countries in the world. Tourists who have planned to travel are canceling or postponing trips due to this pandemic. Accordingly, this will impact the rate of travelers' online reviews on tourism products. Hence, the lack of data, in terms of ratings and textual reviews on hotels, will be a major issue for travel recommendation agents during …

Urban Ai Depends: The Need For (Wider) Urban Strategies, Alessandro Aurigi

School of Art, Design and Architecture

The Southern Brazilian city of Curitiba is well-known for a series of innovative projects that during the end of the 20th Century affirmed it as one of the exemplars of planning and transport innovation in the Global South and beyond. Jaime Lerner was the architect and urbanist turned-mayor, responsible for several of those projects. Lerner recalled that, when designing and testing the revolutionary Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system, an issue arose on ensuring a perfect alignment between buses and the tube-shaped stops. Many ‘complex and costly solutions’ had been considered, including digitally-assisted ones. Then the bus drivers themselves were consulted, …

Other social resources (quality of relationship, formal day activities), wellbeing (anxiety, psychological wellbeing) and cognitive impairment were measured with initial level …

Bachelard, Besson And Bakhtin: A Dialogical Discourse On The Potential Of Intimate Space, Robert Brown Jun 2022

Bachelard, Besson And Bakhtin: A Dialogical Discourse On The Potential Of Intimate Space, Robert Brown

School of Art, Design and Architecture

Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space ponders the image of the wardrobe. Fixated by the figurative nature of its inner space, for Bachelard, the wardrobe is intimate, secret, and ordered. It is a space of protected memories, accessed more through the imagination than the everyday. Besson’s The Fifth Element opens up intimate space. Its external envelope offers no impenetrable boundary but instead a permeable threshold. The Fifth Element suggests an alternative for intimate space, where the incongruous, even conflicting, come together. Such a possibility evokes Bakhtin’s construct of dialogism, which reveled in the potential of dialogue between one and other, across …

Infants Infer Different Types Of Social Relations From Giving And Taking Actions, Denis Tatone, Gergely Csibra Jun 2022

Infants Infer Different Types Of Social Relations From Giving And Taking Actions, Denis Tatone, Gergely Csibra

School of Psychology

Anthropological observations suggest that specific sharing behaviors may predictably covary with specific relational contexts, and thus can be used as relationally informative cues. Given their limited social experiences, cultural novices, such as infants, should be particularly likely to rely on these cues to discover the relational makeup of their social surroundings on the basis of sparse observations. The present study examines a particular hypothesis derived from this proposal, namely that infants interpret giving as indicative of social relations based on the principle of even balance. By systematically contrasting infants’ representation of giving to that of superficially similar taking events, we …

Air pollution may be involved in spreading dengue fever (DF) besides rainfalls and warmer temperatures. While particulate matter (PM), especially those with diameter of 10 μm (PM10) or 2.5 μm or less (PM25), and NO2 increase the risk of coronavirus 2 infection, their roles in triggering DF remain unclear. We explored if air pollution factors predict DF incidence in addition to the classic climate factors. Public databases and DF records of two southern cities in Taiwan were used in regression analyses. Month order, PM10 minimum, PM2.5 minimum, and precipitation days were retained in the enter mode model, and SO2 minimum, …

Northern Sea Route As An Emerging Option For Global Transport Networks: A Policy Perspective, Stavros Karamperidis, Nikolaos Valantasis-Kanellos

Plymouth Business School

The Northern Sea Route (NSR) is an emerging alternative route to the Suez Canal; however, inconclusive research exists on its benefits and viability. This paper uses a two-stage Delphi approach to collect qualitative data from experts, on what actions Nordic countries (Nordic countries are Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland, as well as the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Åland (Nordic Co-operation, 2020)) can undertake to prepare themselves to enter NSR and capture potential benefits deriving from trading in global transport networks. By conceptually developing a framework based on first-mover advantage (FMA) and dynamic capabilities theory (DCT), this paper empirically identifies …

Smooth, efficient agri-food supply chain (AFSC) operations are becoming ever more difficult due to more intense and frequent natural disasters and man-made disruptions. Helping AFSCs to survive disturbances requires re-consideration of how to build their resilience. This study addresses this issue through a cross-country comparative analysis involving interviews with AFSC practitioners, thematic analysis to generate agri-food supply chain resilience (AFSCRes) capability factors, total interpretive structural modelling (TISM) to establish interrelationships among the factors, cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to classification (MICMAC) analysis to categorise the factors, and comparative analysis. The results reveal that contractual restraints regulating farmers’ opportunistic behaviour and regular …

Collaborative Unmanned Vehicles For Inspection, Maintenance, And Repairs Of Offshore Wind Turbines, Mohd Hisham Nordin, Sanjay Sharma, Asiya Khan, Mario Gianni, Sulakshan Rajendran, Robert Sutton

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Operations and maintenance of Offshore Wind Turbines (OWTs) are challenging, with manual operators constantly exposed to hazardous environments. Due to the high task complexity associated with the OWT, the transition to unmanned solutions remains stagnant. Efforts toward unmanned operations have been observed using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) but are limited mostly to visual inspections only. Collaboration strategies between unmanned vehicles have introduced several opportunities that would enable unmanned operations for the OWT maintenance and repair activities. There have been many papers and reviews on collaborative UVs. However, most of the past papers reviewed collaborative UVs …

Exploring Local Perceptions Of Water Quality In The Upper Santa River, Peru, Sally Rangecroft, Rosa Maria Dextre, Isabel Richter, Claire Kelly, Beatriz Fuentealba, Claudia V. Grados Bueno, Mirtha Camacho Hernandez, Sergio Morera, John Martin, John Adam Guy, Caroline Clason

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Water quality is an integral part of water security, but water quality itself is complex, due to its multifaceted nature. Measuring the physico-chemical indicators for water quality (e.g. pH, turbidity, heavy metal content) can provide an objective picture of water health, but it does not provide information on how it integrates and expresses the human perspective. Perceptual information and local ecological knowledge on water quality can help to understand the usability of water and support better conservation strategies. Therefore, the aims of the Nuestro Rio project were to investigate local perceptions of water quality in the upper Santa River basin, …

Gain Scheduling For State Space Control Of A Dual-Mode Inverted Pendulum, Laura Alvarez-Hidalgo, Ian S. Howard

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The aim of the paper is to present an inverted pendulum system that operates in two different modes. Firstly, it operates in a static balancing mode, during which the controller tries to keep the pendulum balanced during which the controller tries to keep the pendulum balanced and maintain the current position of the pendulum carriage. Secondly, it also operates in a velocity control mode, so that the carriage can move at a selective velocity while simultaneously maintaining pendulum balance. In order to realize these two modes of control we implement a state feedback controller and schedule gain depending on the …
