Registries have the potential to tackle some of the current limitations in determining the long-term impact of multiple sclerosis. Online assessments using patient-reported outcomes can streamline follow-up enabling large-scale, long-term, cost-effective, home-based, and patient-focused data collection. However, registry data are sparsely sampled and the sensitivity of patient-reported outcomes relative to clinician-reported scales is unknown, making it hard to fully leverage their unique scope and scale to derive insights. This retrospective and prospective cohort study over 11 years involved 15 976 patients with multiple sclerosis from the United Kingdom Multiples Sclerosis Register. Primary outcomes were changes in two patient-reported outcomes: Multiple …

Trust, Transgression And Surrender: Exploring Teacher And Send Student Perceptions Of Engagement With Creative Arts Project-Based Learning (Capbl) Pedagogies, James Tarling

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

CAPBL is an example of a student-led, Creative Arts/Project-Based Learning (CAPBL/PBL) curriculum approach to working with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) learners. This mixed-methods, quasi-experimental study seeks to explore staff and student perceptions of working in this way and establish key themes for practice in relation to equity and inclusion. Although the literature on PBL is widespread, CAPBL is novel in that it brings these ideas to a specialist SEND, Creative Arts, post-16 context, Further Education (FE), with a particular focus on arts education currently absent from the existing literature. This small-scale research project is positioned as a participant-led …

The opportunistic fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans causes lethal infections in immunocompromised patients. Macrophages are central to the host response to cryptococci; however, it is unclear how C. neoformans is recognised and phagocytosed by macrophages. Here we investigate the role of TLR4 in the non-opsonic phagocytosis of C. neoformans. We find that loss of TLR4 function unexpectedly increases phagocytosis of non-opsonised cryptococci by murine and human macrophages. The increased phagocytosis observed in Tlr4−/− cells was dampened by pre-treatment of macrophages with oxidised-LDL, a known ligand of scavenger receptors. The scavenger receptor, macrophage scavenger receptor 1 (MSR1) (also known as SR-A1 or …

Quality Assessment Of Life Cycle Inventory Data For Composites, Badr Moutik, John Summerscales, Jasper Graham-Jones, Richard Pemberton

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Environmental sustainability over the life cycle of a product is rising as a key driver in the selection of materials and manufacturing processes. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is increasingly used as a standardised, science-based decision-making support tool to quantify and identify potential environmental impacts through all phases of the product life.A major step involved in completing a Life Cycle Inventory (LCI), and so an LCA study, is the collection, analysis, and quality check of data on the investigated processes, data to quantify the inputs and output (e.g., elementary flow of raw materials, energy, waste, and co-products) of the product system …

Peninsula Medical School

Introduction Care is often inadequate and poorly integrated after a dementia diagnosis. Research and policy highlight the unaffordability and unsustainability of specialist-led support, and instead suggest a task-shared model, led by primary care. This study is part of the PriDem primary care led postdiagnostic dementia care research programme and will assess delivery of an evidence-informed, primary care based, person-centred intervention. The intervention involves Clinical Dementia Leads (CDLs) working in primary care to develop effective dementia care systems that build workforce capacity and support teams to deliver tailored support to people living with dementia and their carers. Methods and analysis This …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The Ganges‐Brahmaputra‐Meghna delta is vulnerable to sea level rise from global warming. Based on sea level rise predictions for the year 2100 given in the 6th Assessment Report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), we examine the effect of uncertainty in sea level rise on maximum tidal elevation statistics at several locations along the Bangladesh coastline using a discretized derived distribution approach. For five IPCC scenarios, the standard deviation in maximum tidal elevation including sea level rise is predicted to increase by between 3% and 61% at three different locations for a 41% increase in the standard deviation …

Strongholds Of Liberalism? The Reaction Of Regional Integration Institutions To The Pandemic Trade Crisis, Patrick Holden Jul 2023

Strongholds Of Liberalism? The Reaction Of Regional Integration Institutions To The Pandemic Trade Crisis, Patrick Holden

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Regional integration institutions play an important but ambiguous role in the liberal international system, especially when it comes to trade policy. The Covid-19 pandemic generated a trade crisis, which gave them an opportunity to expand their role in a liberal or illiberal direction. An analysis of the framing and policy measures of five key regional institutions in Europe, South America, Africa and Asia will demonstrate whether they were geared towards liberalisation and/or interventionism in early 2020. The European Union stood out for its strong collective action on trade, working out a new balance between interventionism and liberalism. Other institutions hinted …

Nature Of The Evidence Base And Strengths, Challenges And Recommendations In The Area Of Nutrition And Health Claims: A Position Paper From The Academy Of Nutrition Sciences, Margaret Ashwell, Mary Hickson, Sara Stanner, Ann Prentice, Christine M. Williams

School of Health Professions

AbstractThe regulation of health claims for foods by the Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation is intended, primarily, to protect consumers from unscrupulous claims by ensuring claims are accurate and substantiated with high quality scientific evidence. In this position paper, the Academy of Nutrition Sciences uniquely recognises the strengths of the transparent, rigorous scientific assessment by independent scientists of the evidence underpinning claims in Europe, an approach now independently adopted in UK. Further strengths are the separation of risk assessment from risk management, and the extensive guidance for those submitting claims. Nevertheless, four main challenges in assessing the scientific evidence and …

Use Of Biomimicry Model For The Design Of Perforated Composite Plates, George Modica-Cliff Jul 2023

Use Of Biomimicry Model For The Design Of Perforated Composite Plates, George Modica-Cliff

The Plymouth Student Scientist

There are many practical reasons for making perforations in composites, which include reducing weight and for joining components. Nature often produces strong materials that have multiple perforations allowing organisms to survive in tough environments, biomimicry seeks to utilise these features for artificial solutions. The project proposes to investigate natural structures then using the information gained, to suggest methods by which we could design/make more efficient openings in composite structures. For example, to increase window size in aircraft structures without compromising strength or aerodynamics. Holes are usually made by machining however this project proposes a to use tree knots holes as …

The Resilience Of Juvenile Acropora Corals When Exposed To Artificial Light At Night, Commonly Associated With Coastal Urbanisation, Celie Mullen

The Plymouth Student Scientist

In recent years, artificial light pollution has expanded in area and concentration due to global population growth and technological advances in lighting. The impacts of artificial light at night (ALAN) are now well acknowledged within terrestrial biomes however, influences to surrounding coastal marine ecosystems are poorly recognised. Similarly, research has only just begun to reveal the extent of damage to coral reef systems, which have both substantial ecological and economic importance. However, the survival of important reef building Scleractinia within areas of ALAN is relatively unknown. Here a series of investigations underpin the extent of damage of short and long …

Impacts Of Hydrodynamic Regimes On The Resuspension Of Particulate Matter Within A Seagrass Restoration Site: Jennycliff Bay, Plymouth Sound, Uk, Laura M. Bevington

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Seagrass habitats are ecosystem engineers, providing a multitude of valuable ecosystem services that benefit the environment and human populations. Seagrass meadows are declining at an enhanced rate; therefore, in recent years restoration efforts have increased. However, many projects have had limited rates of success. Site suitability assessments are conducted ahead of plantation efforts; however, some regimes are seldom considered despite them providing important insights into a site’s environmental conditions. For example, light availability to the benthos is a key component of restoration success and this is affected by hydrodynamic processes impacting the local resuspension regime of suspended particulate matter (SPM), …

Effects Of Cholinesterase Inhibition On Attention And Working Memory In Lewy Body Dementias, Sean James Fallon, Olivia Plant, Younes A. Tabi, Sanjay G. Manohar, Masud Husain

School of Psychology

Cholinesterase inhibitors are frequently used to treat cognitive symptoms in Lewy body dementias (Parkinson’s disease dementia and Dementia with Lewy bodies). However, the selectivity of their effects remains unclear. In a novel rivastigmine-withdrawal design, Parkinson’s disease dementia and Dementia with Lewy bodies patients were tested twice: once when taking rivastigmine as usual and once when they had missed one dose. In each session, they performed a suite of tasks (sustained attention, simple short-term recall, distractor resistance and manipulating the focus of attention) which allowed us to investigate the cognitive mechanisms through which rivastigmine affects attentional control. Consistent with previous literature, …

High-magnitude mass flows can have a pervasive geomorphological legacy, yet the short-term response of valley floors to such intense disturbances is poorly known and poses significant observational challenges in unstable landscapes. We combined satellite remote sensing, numerical modeling, and field observations to reconstruct the short-term geomorphological response of river channels directly affected by the 7 February 2021 ice-rock avalanche−debris flow in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, India. The flow deposited 10.4 ± 1.6 Mm3 of sediment within the first 30 km and in places reset the channel floor to a zero-state condition, requiring complete fluvial re-establishment. In the 12 months post-event, 7.0 …

Carbonate Compensation Depth Drives Abyssal Biogeography In The Northeast Pacific, E Simon-Lledó, Dj Amon, G Bribiesca‐Contreras, D Cuvelier, Et Al

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Abyssal seafloor communities cover more than 60% of Earth’s surface. Despite their great size, abyssal plains extend across modest environmental gradients compared to other marine ecosystems. However, little is known about the patterns and processes regulating biodiversity or potentially delimiting biogeographical boundaries at regional scales in the abyss. Improved macroecological understanding of remote abyssal environments is urgent as threats of widespread anthropogenic disturbance grow in the deep ocean. Here, we use a new, basin-scale dataset to show the existence of clear regional zonation in abyssal communities across the 5,000 km span of the Clarion–Clipperton Zone (northeast Pacific), an area targeted …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In this paper, we present a numerical model of a vertical-axis turbine (VAT) with active-pitch torque control. The model is based upon the Wind and Tidal Turbine Embedded Simulator (WATTES) and WATTES-V turbine realisations in conjunction with the actuator line method (ALM), and uses OpenFOAM to solve the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations with two-equation k - ε turbulence closure. Our novel pitch-controlled system is based on an even pressure drop across the entire rotor to mitigate against dynamic stall at low tip speed ratio. The numerical model is validated against experimental measurements and alternative numerical predictions of the hydrodynamic …

Bayesian Multivariate Nonlinear State Space Copula Models, A Kreuzer, L Dalla Valle, C Czado Jul 2023

Bayesian Multivariate Nonlinear State Space Copula Models, A Kreuzer, L Dalla Valle, C Czado

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

A novel flexible class of multivariate nonlinear non-Gaussian state space models, based on copulas, is proposed. Specifically, it is assumed that the observation equation and the state equation are defined by copula families that are not necessarily equal. Inference is performed within the Bayesian framework, using the Hamiltonian Monte Carlo method. Simulation studies show that the proposed copula-based approach is extremely flexible, since it is able to describe a wide range of dependence structures and, at the same time, allows us to deal with missing data. The application to atmospheric pollutant measurement data shows that the approach is suitable for …

A Risk Assessment For The Remote Ocean: The Case Of The South East Atlantic, Holly J. Niner, Siân E. Rees, Giulia La Bianca, Kirsty A. Mcquaid, Kerry L. Howell

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Degradation of the natural world and associated ecosystem services is attributed to a historical failure to include its ‘value’ in decision-making. Uncertainty in the quantification of the relationship between natural capital ‘assets’ that give rise to critical societal benefits and people is one reason for the omission of these values from natural resource management. As this uncertainty increases in marine systems and further still with distance from the coast, the connection between society and natural capital assets is less likely to be included adequately in decision-making. Natural capital assets of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ), including those of the deep …
