Managing Epilepsy In People With Intellectual Disabilities - Creating Capable Communities, Rohit Shankar
Peninsula Medical School
Almost a quarter of people with intellectual disabilities have epilepsy. This life-long condition adversely affects their health, safety and well-being and carries an increased risk of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) in this population. This commentary considers what not only health and social services but also communities and people with intellectual disabilities themselves can do to improve outcomes.

The ‘Capability’ Of South African Energy Governance To Deliver Urban Sustainable Transitions, Stephen Essex, Federico Caprotti, Jiska De Groot, Jon Phillips, Lucy Baker, Peta Wolpe, Yachika Reddy
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Critical to the trajectory and outcome of urban sustainable energy transitions is the ability of government institutions to foster conditions for change and innovation. In this paper, a theoretical perspective combining state power and local governance capability is used as a lens to examine the transition of the energy system in South Africa based on semi-structured interviews with a range of relevant stakeholders, supplemented by analysis of published academic and policy literature. The discussion highlights uneven transitional pathways across the country caused by variations in ‘capability’, together with continuing conflicting interests within the system which require more politically-informed policy processes.

Food On The Margins: A Creative Film Collaboration To Amplify The Voices Of Those Living With Food Insecurity, Clare Pettinger, James Ellwood
School of Health Professions
‘ Food on the margins in Plymouth’ is a short ‘fly on the wall’-style documentary film which has captured the food stories of six individuals who are, for whatever reason, experiencing food insecurity. The film was inspired by a recent participatory food research project (Food as a Lifestyle Motivator) which aimed to explore creative methods to better understand the food experiences of vulnerable communities in Plymouth, UK. Our aim was to ‘co-produce’ a documentary film illustrating the realities of the lived experience of food insecurity that could be promoted by/to city leaders and policy-makers to catalyse food system change. The …

The Anchoring Effect Of Climate Change Acts: A Policy Streams Analysis Of Ireland’S Climate Act Reform, Ian Bailey, Robert Nutkins, Tor Håkon Jackson Inderberg
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The number of political jurisdictions introducing climate change acts (CCAs) has grown in recent years. As framework legislation, CCAs seek to exert anchoring effects on climate policy development by establishing general goals, principles and obligations that subsequent policies to reduce emissions must uphold. Despite expansive research on the negotiation of CCAs, limited analysis exists of factors shaping their anchoring effect or how tensions aligning other climate policies with CCA requirements are managed. This article addresses this by utilizing Kingdon’s multiple streams framework to analyze the negotiation of the Irish Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Act 2021, a CCA …

Student Nurses As A Future General Practice Nursing Workforce. Implementing Collaborative Learning In Practice: Implications For Placement Learning And Patient Access. A Mixed Methods Study., Graham R. Williamson
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Background There is a global shortage of nurses, with particularly acute shortfall in General Practice Nursing in the United Kingdom estimated at as high as 50% vacancy rate by 2031 by some sources. There has previously been reluctance for General Practices to host student nurses on placement, but it has become imperative to increase placement capacity if practices are to be able to recruit a future workforce. Collaborative Learning in Practice is a means of organising placement learning for student nurses using a coaching model, that allows for leadership development, peer support and earlier engagement in patient care, and increases …

Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) face regulatory challenges, evident by that the current ship anti-collision regulations (e.g. COLREG) are not appliable for autonomous navigation systems. While academic research has focused on developing autonomous collision avoidance (CA), these studies have produced inconsistent outcomes compared to conventional navigation practices. This study aims to identify trends and weaknesses in recent academic studies on CA by reviewing and analysing the contents of selected papers. The conventional collision avoidance process (CCAP), which benchmarks human driven modern ship’s capacity for CA compliance with COLREG and industry requirements, was used to disintegrate into 53 fragmented functions under …

Regulatory obligations and market trends connected to environmental sustainability have lately intensified their effect on the shipping industry. New standards are continuously being established, such as the IMO's 2050 aim of lowering greenhouse gas emissions by 50% compared to 2008 levels. These rules have an impact on capital markets and investor decisions about how to fund the maritime transport sector. The standards now include Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) components. These components are not only concerned with the environmental impact of shipping, but also with the social and governance dimensions of those firms that are typically associated with maritime transport …

Exosomal PD-L1 (exoPD-L1) has recently received significant attention as a biomarker predicting immunotherapeutic responses involving the PD1/PD-L1 pathway. However, current technologies for exosomal analysis rely primarily on bulk measurements that do not consider the heterogeneity found within exosomal subpopulations. Here, we present a nanoscale cytometry platform NanoEPIC, enabling phenotypic sorting and exoPD-L1 profiling from blood plasma. We highlight the efficacy of NanoEPIC in monitoring anti-PD-1 immunotherapy through the interrogation of exoPD-L1. NanoEPIC generates signature exoPD-L1 patterns in responders and non-responders. In mice treated with PD1-targeted immunotherapy, exoPD-L1 is correlated with tumor growth, PD-L1 burden in tumors, and the immune suppression …

When Work Harms: How Better Understanding Of Avoidable Employee Harm Can Improve Employee Safety, Patient Safety And Healthcare Quality, Aled Jones, Adrian Neal, Suzie Bailey, Andrew Cooper
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Healthcare settings are inherently dangerous environments, where employees globally are exposed to a myriad of overt risk hazards and stressors. Although employees globally have long been protected in law against physical or material hazards, such as radiation or the discharge of chemicals, psychosocial workplace risks and related avoidable harms are less tangible and poorly understood in healthcare literature. For example, a recent comprehensive review and analysis of national policies and approaches to occupational health across 12 countries concluded that workplace related psychosocial risks, mental health and well-being are overshadowed by the focus on physical workplace safety issues, due to lack …

Design And Kinematic Analysis Of A 3d-Printed 3dof Robotic Manipulandum, Ian S. Howard
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Robotic manipulanda are often used to investigate human motor control of arm movements, as well as for tasks where haptic feedback is useful, e.g., in computer-aided design and in the teleoperation of robotic arms. Here we present the design and implementation of a small, low-cost, torque controlled 3DOF revolute manipulandum which supports translational movement in three-dimensions. All bespoke structural components are 3D printed and the arm lengths are constructed from carbon fiber tubes, which exhibit high stiffness but are very light, resulting in a design that exhibits a low intrinsic endpoint mass at the handle. We use rare-earth BLDC motors …

Successful promotion of entrepreneurship requires an understanding of entrepreneurial intentions (EIs). The purpose of this paper is to study the relationship between EI and its antecedents concerning the undergraduates in India. Extending the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) framework, a hypo-deductive research-based approach was applied to test the hypotheses associated with EI and its antecedents. An adapted version of the entrepreneurial intention questionnaire (EIQ) was used in the survey. The partial least square method was used to test the hypotheses. The results reflected that personal attitude, perceived behavioural control, and university support make a significant positive impact on the EI …
