The Effectiveness Of Doing Grief Work With Children: An Exploratory Study, Nicola Elizabeth Hardy Jan 1993

The Effectiveness Of Doing Grief Work With Children: An Exploratory Study, Nicola Elizabeth Hardy

School of Psychology Theses

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a group intervention with 12 bereaved children, aged 8-12. All of the children had been bereaved of a parent within the past 2 years. Due to the small number of children available for inclusion in the study, 6 of the children had previously received individual professional help for grief related issues. The design was a repeated measures pre and post intervention between group design. The study compared the two sub-groups of bereaved children with a group of non-bereaved children who were matched in terms of age and sex. The results indicate that …

Cryptocaryon Irritans Brown, 1951 (Ciliophora): Transmission And Immune Response In The Mullet Chelon Labrosus (Risso, 1826), Peter John Burgess

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

A standardised procedure was established for the laboratory maintenance of C.irritans in thick-lipped mullet. Nine isolates of C.irritans were obtained of which eight were successfully established for up to 48 weeks. Studies on individual life cycle stages with regards to longevity, viability, and susceptibility to a chemotherapeutic agent, revealed the difficulties in eradicating the cysts. Transmission of the parasite both to and from the host correlated with darkness. High infection levels resulted in the death of host fish within five days following exposure to theronts. An acquired protective immune response developed in host mullet within 14 days after exposure to …

The Turkey-Wing Mussel, Arca Zebra : Aspects Of Its Ecology, Reproduction And Physiology In Bermudan Waters, Samia Christiane Sarkis

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Growth and reproductive potential of the turkey-wing mussel in Bermuda was assessed following field studies, the determination of nutrient storage sites and nutrient use during periods of reproduction, and seasonal fluctuations in the scope for growth index. Larval and post-larval development were also described and were typical of the family Arcidae. Furthermore, post-larval production, by controlled laboratory rearing, was suggested as a useful tool for enhancement of stocks for this species. Both preliminary field and laboratory studies indicated slow shell growth of the species throughout its life cycle. Temperature minima recorded during the winter months were suggested to have a …

A Distributed Security Architecture For Large Scale Systems, Simon John Shepherd Jan 1992

A Distributed Security Architecture For Large Scale Systems, Simon John Shepherd

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

This thesis describes the research leading from the conception, through development, to the practical implementation of a comprehensive security architecture for use within, and as a value-added enhancement to, the ISO Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model. The Comprehensive Security System (CSS) is arranged basically as an Application Layer service but can allow any of the ISO recommended security facilities to be provided at any layer of the model. It is suitable as an 'add-on' service to existing arrangements or can be fully integrated into new applications. For large scale, distributed processing operations, a network of security management centres (SMCs) is …

Attention, Memory, And Concepts In Autism, H Schendan Jan 1992

Attention, Memory, And Concepts In Autism, H Schendan

School of Psychology

In this paper, it is hypothesized that many of the behavioral abnormalities found in autistic persons result from deficits in fundamental cognitive abilities. Memory and attention are the most likely candidates. The memory deficit may be primarily one of retrieval, possibly exacerbated by an encoding deficit. However, both types of memory deficit are probably the result of a primary deficit in attention. This is supported by the observation that the autistic memory deficit resembles that following frontal lobe, rather than mediotemporal lobe, damage. This and other evidence is used to draw a parallel between autism and frontal lobe syndrome. In …

Characterisation Of Unresolved Complex Mixtures Of Hydrocarbons By Degradative Methods, Andrew Thomas Revill Jan 1992

Characterisation Of Unresolved Complex Mixtures Of Hydrocarbons By Degradative Methods, Andrew Thomas Revill

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Unresolved Complex Mixtures (UCMs) of hydrocarbons are found in crude and refined oils and in water, sediments and biota polluted with oils. The concentrations of UCMs in oils are significant (e. g. >65% of the aliphatic hydrocarbons in fresh Kuwait crude) and it is perhaps surprising that virtually nothing is known about UCM composition. The present study sought to redress this paucity of information in three main ways: First, following two recent studies of aliphatic UCMs, an investigation of the composition of the "aromatic" UCM of Venezuelan Tia Juana Pesado crude oil was made by spectroscopic (IR, NMR, MS) and …

Origins And Short-Term Sedimentary Fate Of Globally Distributed Biological Marker Hydrocarbons, Simon John Hird Jan 1992

Origins And Short-Term Sedimentary Fate Of Globally Distributed Biological Marker Hydrocarbons, Simon John Hird

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Nearly thirty C20, C25, and C30 highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) hydrocarbons have been detected, sometimes in high concentrations, in recent freshwater, estuarine, coastal and hypersaline sediments, and water column particulate matter from numerous locations worldwide. The parent structures have been proved but only a few of the double bond positions have been established. The assignment of C21, C22 and C26 homologues and other C20 and C25 isomers, remains tentative. A wide body of evidence suggests that the compounds are biogenic in origin, with algae and possibly bacteria the most likely source organisms. A few of the compounds have been identified …

The Channel Tunnel Rail Link: Opportunities And Problems For Regional Economic Development, David Matthew Smith Jan 1992

The Channel Tunnel Rail Link: Opportunities And Problems For Regional Economic Development, David Matthew Smith

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The regional economic impact of the Channel Tunnel has engendered much public and private sector interest. Previous studies examining the regional implications of the Tunnel have argued that related development pressures will be largely confined to South East England, further widening the "North-South" divide. Economic Potential Analysis was earlier employed by Clark el. al. (1969) and Keeble et. al. (1982a) to model the geographical impact of the Tunnel on the relative accessibility of the UK regions. The conclusions drawn from these studies support the proposition that the South East would gain at the expense of the more peripheral regions. However, …

Sample Introduction And Instrumentation In Plasma Spectrometry, James Henry Dean Hartley Jan 1992

Sample Introduction And Instrumentation In Plasma Spectrometry, James Henry Dean Hartley

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Plasma spectrometry is now a widely accepted technique for the determination of the elemental composition of a wide range of sample types. The successful introduction of volatile organic solvents has however been limited, due to the resulting high solvent loading of the plasma and subsequent plasma instability. The design, function and application of a number of novel desolvation systems have been investigated in this study to decrease this loading and facilitate operation with volatile organic solvents.

Turonian Dinoflagellate Cyst Assemblages From Southern England, Meriel Fitzpatrick Jan 1992

Turonian Dinoflagellate Cyst Assemblages From Southern England, Meriel Fitzpatrick

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Little recent work has directly addressed the variation in dinoflagellate cyst assemblages and the resulting biostratigraphy from the Turonian of southern England. Sampling (every 1-2m) of the whole succession from three areas (Dover, Sussex and the Isle of Wight), together with sedimentological and macropalaeontological detail provided a good basis for what is primarily a biostratigraphical study. Altogether 328 samples were analysed. It is one of the aims of this project to expand on the knowledge and geographical limits of dinoflagellate cyst assemblages from the Turonian. Full descriptions of all dinoflagellate cyst species have been included. Two new species are believed …

Palynological Investigations Of Cenomanian Chalks And Marls From England, Ailbhe Maire Duane Jan 1992

Palynological Investigations Of Cenomanian Chalks And Marls From England, Ailbhe Maire Duane

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The palynological analysis of chalk and marl samples from Cenomanian sections sampled at high resolution has yielded largely diverse and abundant, well-preserved microplankton assemblages. Four sections have been investigated, three from the Dover-Folkestone Warren area, south-east England and the fourth from South Ferriby, South Humberside, north-east England. The dinoflagellate cysts present accord well with previously described Cenomanian microplankton assemblages from western Europe, and are assignable to the established Litosphaeridium siphonophorum Zone of Davey (1970). Full descriptions of all dinoflagellate cyst species found have been included. A new species, Litosphaeridium sp. A is believed to be indicative of latest Cenomanian to …

The Rationalisation Of Drinking Water Supplies For Pig Housing, John Barber Jan 1992

The Rationalisation Of Drinking Water Supplies For Pig Housing, John Barber

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

This study consisted of a series of experiments which investigated the water use of growing/finishing pigs (25-90 kg), newly weaned pigs (5- 12 kg) and gestating sows. Drinker type was found to affect water use in growing pigs. For example significantly more water (28 %) was used from Mono-flo nipple drinkers than Arato bite drinkers (P<0.01). For all classes of pigs studied water use was significantly increased by increasing the water delivery rate. The percent increase in water use over the extremes of water delivery rate tested in individual trials were respectively: ration fed growing pigs, 105 % (300-900 cm³ /min P<0.001); ad libitum fed growing pigs, 52% (200-1100 cm³/min P<0.01); gestating sows, 25% (500-2500 cm³/min P<0:01); and newly weaned pigs 109% (175-700 cm³ /min P<0.001). In newly weaned piglets, increasing the water delivery rate from 175 to 700 cm³/min resulted in a significant increase in feed intake (44 g/piglet/day, P<0.001) and growth rate (37 g/piglet/day, P<0.01). For growing pigs (27-55 kg), a relationship was established between water intake, feed intake and liveweight, from which it could be hypothesised that the pig had a limit to daily volumetric intake. This was found to be 12.0 ±1.2 % of liveweight. When feed intake was restricted, water intake increased to maintain the 12% volumetric limit. This hypothesis was validated from other published work extending the weight range to 105 kg. Evidence was produced indicating that newly weaned pigs also have a constant volumetric daily limit. It is suggested that in cases where feed intake needs to be restricted, water intake could be manipulated in order to limit feed intake. This would permit the wider use of ad lib feeding systems and the welfare benefits these allow. The water use of a grower/finisher unit was modelled according to a 12 % volumetric limit and the factors affecting water intake and wastage. The water intake of grower/finisher pigs was predicted using this model. This enabled the percentage of water wasted by different drinker types and delivery rates to be estimated. For wet fed pigs, increasing the water to feed ratio from 1.63:1 to 3. 25: 1 significantly increased feed digestibility (P<0. 05). As many experiments conducted to evaluate the digestible energy of feeds may have used low feed to water ratios (generally around 2:1) it is suggested that many of these studies have attributed incorrect nutritional values to raw materials used in diets for pigs.

Diagnostic Indicators In Trough - Ridge Systems Applied To Real Time Ship Routeing, Brian James Manhire Jan 1992

Diagnostic Indicators In Trough - Ridge Systems Applied To Real Time Ship Routeing, Brian James Manhire

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

The need for the mariner to have better weather indicators for efficient ship routeing in the middle latitudes is demonstrated. The benefits of an early appreciation of the subtle changes in storm behaviour is shown in a case study. Monitoring of ship's performance through a frontal depression using a modified Tropical Storm Avoidance simulation, also developed by the author, shows the penalties of not minimising the effects of wind and waves. To accomplish the aims of this project diagnostic models are developed, firstly to show the overall movement of the frontal depression within the trough - ridge system and secondly …

An Expert Systems Approach To Collision Avoidance, Grahame Kenneth Blackwell Jan 1992

An Expert Systems Approach To Collision Avoidance, Grahame Kenneth Blackwell

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Any object or entity moving i n an open environment requires, together with certain navigational skills, the capacity to avoid collisions. Such ability presupposes: manoeuvrability; awareness of the nature of, and ability to detect, potential hazards; and innate intelligence to formulate, evaluate, and implement appropriate avoidance strategies. The maritime environment, and vessels moving within it, provide a classic illustration of the problems and principles of collision avoidance in two-dimensional space. Events in recent years, leading to loss of life, wastage of resources and pollution of the environment, have highlighted the limited success being achieved in this area. In most cases …

A Sociological Examination Of Juvenile Fruit Machine Gambling In A Seaside Town, Susan Elizabeth Fisher Jan 1992

A Sociological Examination Of Juvenile Fruit Machine Gambling In A Seaside Town, Susan Elizabeth Fisher

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis has two main aims. The first is to develop a standard measure of addiction to gambling in children which could be used to estimate the extent of dependency among children aged 11 to 16 years. The second focusses upon patterns of usage and seeks to understand the various meanings which children attach to fruit machine gambling in an arcade. The first aim has been achieved by adapting a measure used to diagnose addiction to gambling in adults for use with children. The resulting DSM-IV-J criteria were tested using a questionnaire survey on a sample of 467 schoolchildren aged …

Social Identity, Social Change And The Construction Of Symbolic Boundaries In A West Highland Settlement, Angus Macleod Jan 1992

Social Identity, Social Change And The Construction Of Symbolic Boundaries In A West Highland Settlement, Angus Macleod

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

In the last thirty years there have been very few systematic observations and analyses of everyday life at a local level. (see Bell and Newby, 1972) As a result our knowledge of local sub-cultures is seriously outdated (E. S. R. C., 1982,13) and we are not maintaining an up to date social history of our own times. However, Bulmer, in an article entitled "The Rejuvenation of Community Studies? " (1985) and Willmott (1986) have both identified "some sign that the study of localities is being revived". (Bulmer, 1985,433) This thesis, a sociological account of contemporary rural life in part of …

Coalitions In English Local Government: Party Political Strategies In Hung Councils, Michael Temple Jan 1992

Coalitions In English Local Government: Party Political Strategies In Hung Councils, Michael Temple

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This work takes a multi-method approach to the study of hung English councils. Insights and suppositions from a variety of approaches are utilised, including formal coalition theory and case studies of local authorities. A major aim of the thesis is to analyse questionnaire and case study data which will further improve our understanding of coalitional activity. Although the primary purpose is to inform the student of hung councils, formal coalition theories are also tested. This study provides the first clear evidence that elected political elites lose power to the body of councillors in most hung councils. However, the power of …

Classification Of Complex Two-Dimensional Images In A Parallel Distributed Processing Architecture, Robert Gilmour Simpson Jan 1992

Classification Of Complex Two-Dimensional Images In A Parallel Distributed Processing Architecture, Robert Gilmour Simpson

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Neural network analysis is proposed and evaluated as a method of analysis of marine biological data, specifically images of plankton specimens. The quantification of the various plankton species is of great scientific importance, from modelling global climatic change to predicting the economic effects of toxic red tides. A preliminary evaluation of the neural network technique is made by the development of a back-propagation system that successfully learns to distinguish between two co-occurring morphologically similar species from the North Atlantic Ocean, namely Ceratium arcticum and C. longipes. Various techniques are developed to handle the indeterminately labelled source data, pre-process the images …

The Enteric Delivery Of Macromolecules And Subsequent Immune Response In The Cichlid Oreochromis Mossambicus, Paul Jenkins Jan 1992

The Enteric Delivery Of Macromolecules And Subsequent Immune Response In The Cichlid Oreochromis Mossambicus, Paul Jenkins

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Enhanced enteric delivery systems were examined in the cichlid Oreochromis mossambicus to evaluate the requirements for potential oral vaccination strategies in teleost fish. Human gamma globulin (HGG) was delivered enterically (orally or anally) to the intestine of O.mossambicus as a standard test antigen. The co-administration of the saponin Quillaja saponaria (Quil-A) was evaluated as a novel oral adjuvant, delivered with the antigen in a soluble form and also as a delivery vehicle in the form of micelles and immunestimulatory complexes (ISCOMS). HGG absorption across the intestine was monitored utilising sensitive immunocytochemical techniques which showed that the enterically delivered antigen was …

Application Of Image Analysis Techniques To Satellite Cloud Motion Tracking, King Shing Albert Lau Jan 1992

Application Of Image Analysis Techniques To Satellite Cloud Motion Tracking, King Shing Albert Lau

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Cloud motion wind (CMW) determination requires tracking of individual cloud targets. This is achieved by first clustering and then tracking each cloud cluster. Ideally, different cloud clusters correspond to diiferent pressure levels. Two new clustering techniques have been developed for the identification of cloud types in multi-spectral satellite imagery. The first technique is the Global-Local clustering algorithm. It is a cascade of a histogram clustering algorithm and a dynamic clustering algorithm. The histogram clustering algorithm divides the multi-spectral histogram into'non-overlapped regions, and these regions are used to initialise the dynamic clustering algorithm. The dynamic clustering algorithm assumes clusters have a …

Pressure Fluctuations In Two-Phase Flows, Andrew Leonard Samways Jan 1992

Pressure Fluctuations In Two-Phase Flows, Andrew Leonard Samways

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Naturally occurring pressure fluctuations have been observed in two-phase flows by a number of researchers for example Matsui [1984]. This thesis Investigates the nature of these pressure fluctuations within vertically upward bubbly two-phase flows with a view to developing a novel non-intrusive pressure correlation technique for use downhole to monitor the area average dispersed phase velocity, Vg. To date non-intrusive correlation flow monitoring techniques suitable for use downhole exhibit a non-uniform field sensitivity characteristic which when correlated between two points reflects the velocity of the dispersed phase within the stronger sensing region. Four sources of pressure fluctuations were Identified In …

The Design Of Active Resistors And Transductors In A Cmos Technology, Pak Kwong Chan Jan 1992

The Design Of Active Resistors And Transductors In A Cmos Technology, Pak Kwong Chan

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

This thesis surveys linearisation techniques for implementing monolithic MOS active resistors and transconductors, and investigates the design of linear tunable resistors and transconductors. Improving linearity and tunability in the presence of non-ideal factors such as bulk modulation, mobility-degradation effects and mismatch of transistors is a principal objective. A family of new non-saturation-mode resistors and two novel saturation-mode transconductors are developed. Where possible, approximate analytical expressions are derived to explain the principles of operation. Performance comparisons of the new structures are made with other well-known circuits and their relative advantages and disadvantages evaluated. Experimental and simulation results are presented which validate …

The Development Of The Palmar Sweat Index As An Applied Measure In Clinical Psychology, Keith John Clements Jan 1992

The Development Of The Palmar Sweat Index As An Applied Measure In Clinical Psychology, Keith John Clements

School of Psychology Theses

Five studies are described, examining the validity of the Palmar Sweat Index (PSI) as an alternative to traditional measures of electrodermal activity (EDA). A review of research using the PSI identified tour topics which needed to be addressed, before the PSI could be accepted as an alternative to measures of EDA. The first of these topics concerns the reliability of the PSI. A preliminary analysis confirmed that the PSI could be scored reliably. The second topic to be examined, was the relationship between the PSI and measures of EDA. The PSI was found to correlate significantly with several parameters of …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

A new mediumi, designated Ribose Ornithine Deoxycholate agar (ROD), was developed and used in field trials at two fish farms where fish were known to have ERM. The medium indicated that Yersinia ruckeri could occur in faeces four to six weeks before appearing in the kidney. Fxurther epidemiological studies dealing with fish condition, performance, disease signs and water isolation are presented. These factors are discussed in relation to husbandry and management practices. The minimum uihibitory concentration (MIC) values for 124 strains of F. ruckeri were detemuned. The effect of oxolinic acid, oxytetracycline and a potentiated sulphonamide, on growth patterns over …

Ground Flora And Seed Banks Of Woodlands In South West England, Susan Jane Warr Jan 1991

Ground Flora And Seed Banks Of Woodlands In South West England, Susan Jane Warr

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

This thesis examines the ground flora and seed banks of a range of forest and woodland types in south west England. Ground flora surveys were earned out and seed banks investigated by sampling and germination trials. Depletion of both the ground flora and seed banks of conifer plantations and neglected coppice was shown to have occurred after periods of 40-50 years or more. Re-coppicing or clear-felling of such woodlands did not always result in immediate ground flora recovery and subsequent seed bank renewal. After long periods of shade, resulting from neglect or the presence of a dense conifer canopy, the …

Rapid Cryogenic Fixation Of Biological Specimens For Electron Microscopy, Keith Patrick Ryan Jan 1991

Rapid Cryogenic Fixation Of Biological Specimens For Electron Microscopy, Keith Patrick Ryan

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

This thesis describes investigations into cryofixation by the plunge-cooling technique, at ambient pressure. The objective was to characterise coolants which are commonly used for cryofixation, so that the structure and chemistry of biological specimens may be preserved in a more life-like state. The work began with the design of a suitable cooling device. This was developed further into a large test-bed apparatus which was used in both biological and methodological experiments. The large cooling apparatus demonstrated for the first time that ethane was a superior coolant under forced convection, compared to propane or Freon 22, for bare thermocouples, for exposed …
