The Home Owners' Loan Corporation (HOLC) of the federal government implemented the racially discriminatory housing policy known as "redlining" in the 1930s, which still has an effect on Waterloo, Iowa's educational system to this day. The practice targeted neighborhoods considered to be undesirable due to their racial or ethnic makeup, regularly denying residents services or putting tight restrictions on investment, insurance, and mortgage lending. The color-coded maps that HOLC assessors used to identify high-risk zones - areas populated by ethnic minorities were frequently designated in red - are where the term "redlining" first appeared. This study explores the enduring impact of redlining on the distribution and upkeep of Waterloo, IA's community resources such as schools and childcare facilities. It assesses how these historical policies affect community development and individual well-being. Through a combination of GIS and qualitative methods, the goal is to highlight disparities in the availability and standard of vital services due to past and present socio-economic factors. This analysis will aid policymakers, urban planners, and advocates in bridging Waterloo's social equity gaps.

• Similar rates of mental illness among rural and urban people (Morales et al., 2020)
• Higher suicide rates among rural people (Brunk, 2010)

Suspected Vs. Diagnosed Mental Illness, Race, And The Ngri Plea, Alexa Roudabush, Helen C. Harton

This study investigated the effects of mental illness (suspected, diagnosed) and the defendant’s race (Black, White) on receiving the NGRI plea in a Second-Degree murder case. Participants were more likely to assign the NGRI plea to a Black defendant than a White defendant if the defendant had a diagnosed mental illness, but were more likely to assign a guilty plea to the Black defendant than the White when the diagnosis was only suspected.

According to the World Food Program (2024), A total of 23.4 million people in The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are projected to be acutely food insecure, and an estimated 2.8 million children are acutely malnourished. The implication of this is exposure to acute diseases, poverty, malnutrition, and even death. Poverty, climate change, inflation, war, and conflict are the foundation causes of world hunger, and all these factors plague the DRC. It is estimated that 1.2 million children are trafficked each year, and two children are sold every minute. These children are exposed to some of the world’s most adverse experiences. Reports show that trafficking is the second most lucrative crime in the world. This study will examine the connection between trafficking across the United States and Haiti by exploring the types of child trafficking, why it occurs, and how traffickers can control and move children across borders. The point of the study is to see a possible relationship between the use of communal resources and wellness. The research question was how do communal resources relate to wellness? The hypothesis was the more one uses communal resources the higher their wellness will be. The sample was college students at the University of Northern Iowa (n=71). The results showed that the hypothesis was not supported. Following the Great Depression, FDR created The New Deal. The New Deal included The National Housing Act of 1934. Since more people were able to afford homes, The Home Owners Loan Corporation (HOLC) created Residential Security Maps, to “ensure” that the recipients of these loans would be able to repaid the banks. These maps were the redlining maps responsible for housing segregation in many cities within America.
