Self-Presentation On Social Network Sites: Development Of A Self-Identity Expression Scale And Its Relationship With Social Competence, Sherice Gearhart, Seok Kang, Kwan Min Lee Jan 2011

Self-Presentation On Social Network Sites: Development Of A Self-Identity Expression Scale And Its Relationship With Social Competence, Sherice Gearhart, Seok Kang, Kwan Min Lee

Iowa Journal of Communication

The current study explores dimensions of self-identity expression on social network sites (SNSs) and their relationships with social competence. Data were collected through an online survey among young SNS users that had a profile on Facebook and/or MySpace. Results showed that self-identity expression on SNSs is multidimensional made up of interest/activity, roles and memberships, and opinion expression. Individuals who were found to actively use SNSs to express views on social and political issues tended to exhibit high social competence and an ability to form and manage offline real-world relationships. Results also indicate that SNS users selectively use self-identity expression dimensions …

Patterns Of Response To Health Risks Among The Poor And Near Poor, Shawna G. Harris, Shelly R. Hovick, Vicky S. Freimuth, Ashani Johnson-Turbes, Doryn D. Chervin

Iowa Journal of Communication

To understand how to reach low-income audiences with persuasive health communication, the present study analyzes 6 years of formative health research conducted by U.S. federal agencies. A thematic content analysis was conducted of formative research reports representing more than 800 participants. Recurring themes regarding the motivations and barriers to health-protective behaviors and sources of information used and trusted were assessed. Results indicate low-income people desire to maintain or improve their health and may do so with the support of others. Major barriers to implementing health-protective behaviors include the lack of comfort or appeal, lack of knowledge, time and potential side …

When Bieber Fever Strikes: Using Twitter As A New Medium For Attack And Defense Communication, Samuel Hardman Taylor, Matthew Barton Jan 2011

When Bieber Fever Strikes: Using Twitter As A New Medium For Attack And Defense Communication, Samuel Hardman Taylor, Matthew Barton

Iowa Journal of Communication

Rhetorical analyses of image restoration and attack have characteristically centered on public figures because their images are the focal point of news conversation for traditional mass media outlets following events of public shame. Through the development of Web 2.0 technologies and microblogging sites like Twitter, publishing power has shifted the conversation about public figures and their image creation, management and restoration into the hands of the general public. The shift creates new opportunities for research in the field of public discourse, specifically attack and defense rhetoric. This study uses the tweets surrounding Justin Bieber's loss at the 2011 Grammy Awards …

Organizational Face: Examining The Communication Of Organizational Identity Through Emotional Labor, Joy L. Daggs Jan 2011

Organizational Face: Examining The Communication Of Organizational Identity Through Emotional Labor, Joy L. Daggs

Iowa Journal of Communication

Organizational communication scholars have been studying organizational identity and emotional labor as two independent constructs. Organizational identity has been studied in terms of how organizational members identify with their specific organization and how the public at large views the organization. Emotional labor has been studied in a variety of contexts examining how emotional displays are demanding and exhausting for those whose jobs require them (flight attendants, 911 call takers, retail sales associates, etc.). The important aspect of the emotional labor literature is its focus on how emotions are a commodity of the organization (Hochschild, 1983).

However, as the two literatures …

Wiggling Worms: Using The Learning Cycle In An Elementary Classroom To Study Variation, Lori Marie Ihrig, Jennifer Nicole Prindle Jan 2011

Wiggling Worms: Using The Learning Cycle In An Elementary Classroom To Study Variation, Lori Marie Ihrig, Jennifer Nicole Prindle

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In grades K-2, students are at an age when they start to look closely at living things around them. They can comprehend that while individuals may be of the same kind (i.e., kittens from the same litter), they possess differences. This article uses the learning cycle to engage students in making observations and measurements about plants and animals in order to help them understand “there is variation among individuals of one kind in a population” (AAAS, 1993, p. 107). This article promotes National Science Education Standards A and C, and Iowa Teaching Standards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

Does Music Tempo Influence Maximal Force Output?, Aaron D. Suma

Graduate Research Papers

This study aimed to determine the influence of music tempo on maximal force output. Furthermore, this study also examined participant's perception of listening to different tempo music during a maximal force task. Fifteen recreationally active male participants with a mean age of 25.1 years, mass of 89.14 kg, and height of 182.1 cm performed isometric mid-thigh pulls under three different conditions (no music, slow tempo music, and fast tempo music) in the University of Northern Iowa free-weight room. The peak pulling force was measured using a portable force plate to the nearest tenth of a Newton under the three conditions …

"It's About The Best That We Can Get:" The Technologically-Mediated Maintenance Of Women's Long-Distance Friendships, Jessica Thern Smith

Iowa Journal of Communication

This study was designed to uncover how women maintain their long-distance friendships using technologically-mediated channels. Thirty-four qualitative interviews were conducted with women in a university setting: first-year undergraduate students, first-year graduate students, and recently-hired faculty members. Data analysis resulted in uncovering how women adapt maintenance behaviors (positivity, assurances, openness, social networks) to mediated channels (Facebook, cellular phones, e-mail). Participants indicate LDFs may be challenging, but the necessary effort and lack of co-presence does not deter them from devoting themselves to the continuous maintenance work.

Teaching Math And Confidence Through Burkean Identification: A Close-Textual Analysis Of Danica Mckellar's Math Doesn't Suck, Valerie Lynn Schrader Jan 2011

Teaching Math And Confidence Through Burkean Identification: A Close-Textual Analysis Of Danica Mckellar's Math Doesn't Suck, Valerie Lynn Schrader

Iowa Journal of Communication

This close textual analysis examines the various sections of Danica McKellar's book Math Doesn't Suck through the lens of Burkean identification. This article explores how McKellar, a well-known actress and mathematician, uses Burkean identification to persuade her audience of middle-school-aged girls to learn and enjoy mathematics and to have confidence in their own abilities. Through an analysis of McKellar's writing style, personal testimonials, quotations from celebrities and "real-life" kids, and story problems to which many girls can relate, this article suggests that McKellar connects with her audience, and that in this case, identification works in much the same way that …

The Affects Of Social Media On Practice Of Public Relations, Gayle M. Pohl Jan 2011

The Affects Of Social Media On Practice Of Public Relations, Gayle M. Pohl

Iowa Journal of Communication

The public relations industry has shifted towards social media. Services like PitchEngine, PressLift, PRX Builder, and Mind Touch are bringing the press release into the new millennium with embedded multimedia and easy distribution through various channels, including social media and e-mail. The methods of distributing information are driven by social media. Rather than e-mailing a press release, public relations people are sending journalists to custom landing pages created just for that specific announcement, contacting them via Twitter with a BUDurllink to the release, or even directing them to a YouTube video with a message from the CEO making the announcement. …

Wild Geese Families And Commuter Families: Theoretical Considerations Of Relational Maintenance Of Families In Distance, Lena Yoo Jan 2011

Wild Geese Families And Commuter Families: Theoretical Considerations Of Relational Maintenance Of Families In Distance, Lena Yoo

Iowa Journal of Communication

Traditionally, families have transformed their forms to best adapt the members' labor mobility primarily in search of better-paid jobs and other economic opportunities (Lee & Koo, 2006, p. 533). In the current period of heightened globalization, many families migrate to other locations, both domestic and international, in order to confront the changing global environment. Diverse attempts at flexible adaptation have brought many new types of families (Lee & Koo, 2006, p. 533). My research focuses on a new family type where the members of which are separated in two or more locations but remain integral members of the original family, …

Facebook As A Tool For Fund-Raising And Support By Religious Organizations, Mark D. Johns Jan 2011

Facebook As A Tool For Fund-Raising And Support By Religious Organizations, Mark D. Johns

Iowa Journal of Communication

This pilot project explores the use of Facebook by a number of religious and denominationally affiliated non-profit charity or social purpose organizations. International relief agencies, youth ministry organizations, camping ministries, missionary organizations and others have established "causes" on facebook.com that are designed to gather "members," further ongoing interaction, and raise funds. Some have suggested that "causes" function, at least in some cases, as expressions of "brand communities" (Hassay & Peloz, 2009; Muniz & O'Guinn, 2001), and questions exist regarding the strength of social ties in such brand relationships (Haythornthwaite, 2002). Facebook users were surveyed, a variety of "cause" pages were …
