The Need To Prioritize Educating Special Educators On Augmentative And Alternative Communication Systems, Natalie Owens
The Need To Prioritize Educating Special Educators On Augmentative And Alternative Communication Systems, Natalie Owens
Graduate Research Papers
As alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) devices continue to be present in classrooms, it is vital for special educators to have a grasp of the potential systems they could interact with. Existing literature has indicated three main themes among special educators and their relation to AAC systems: a lack of preservice training, poor in-field experiences relating to collaboration and deficiencies in educational resources, and little understanding of evidence-based interventions and their implementations. It will be shown that through the continued absence of AAC systems in preservice training, special educators’ knowledge and skill set will help future students suffer. This synthesis …

Enhancing Phonemic Awareness Through Explicit Instruction In A Kindergarten Classroom: An Action Research Study, Emily M. Caylor
Graduate Research Papers
This action research study examined the implementation of early phonemic awareness exposure and the impact of an Elkonin Box multisensory Tier II support focused on segmentation, blending, isolation, and manipulation. The study involved a small group of kindergarten students with varied backgrounds over a fifteen-week period. Data collection included a pre-assessment, four bi-weekly progress checks, and a post-assessment. Results indicated a connection between the implementation of the Tier II support and student growth over time. The researcher recommends this Tier II support as a complement to core instruction to strengthen phonemic awareness development. For classroom teachers, the study highlights the …

Clinical And Community-Based Recovery Models: The Focus On How They Can Be Better Together, Alicia Wilder
Clinical And Community-Based Recovery Models: The Focus On How They Can Be Better Together, Alicia Wilder
Graduate Research Papers
Two of the main pathways for individuals to access recovery services are clinical and community-based. The clinical model focuses on medical stabilization and treatment, followed by community-based care that provides peer-driven support and sustainability through connection. The purpose is to examine how recovery models aim to support those in recovery and pinpoint the ways they can integrate medical and social systems to meet client needs. Comparing the two will allow us to understand how each model supports sustained recovery and overall well-being. The question that will be researched in this study is: How do acute clinical treatment and community- based …

Factors Affecting Dating Violence In Adolescence, Madison Darrah
Factors Affecting Dating Violence In Adolescence, Madison Darrah
Graduate Research Papers
Prior research has named many risk and protective factors associated with adolescent dating violence (ADV). However, comparatively little research has examined how substance use intersects with these risk and protective factors or how effective interventions can be designed to address both issues of substance use and ADV simultaneously. The purpose of the current study is to examine the relationship between substance use and ADV, with a particular focus on perpetration of ADV during adolescence. This literature review synthesizes existing research to identify factors associated with ADV, evaluate theoretical frameworks that explain ADV, and examine how substance use contributes to ADV …
“En La Clase, Sí. En Estados Unidos, No.”: La Motivación, La Pertenencia Y El Intercambio De Recursos En Clases Para Adultos Aprendices De Inglés, Katie Hunter
Graduate Research Papers
Assessing The Viability Of Speleothem Float Samples From Mammoth Cave National Park For Reconstruction Of The Laurentide Ice Sheet Position, Jackson Minton
Assessing The Viability Of Speleothem Float Samples From Mammoth Cave National Park For Reconstruction Of The Laurentide Ice Sheet Position, Jackson Minton
Honors Program Theses
Speleothems are widely used as paleoclimate archives, as they preserve geochemical records of environmental change through groundwater feeding. In regions like Mammoth Cave National Park, these records could be used to determine the position of the Laurentide Ice Sheet based on hydrologic changes. This study uses detached flowstone samples, known as float, from the New Discovery flowstone within Mammoth Cave to assess calcite preservation and the feasibility of accurate age dating to record paleoclimate information. Samples were analyzed using X-ray fluorescence to determine elemental composition and were prepared as petrographic thin sections for microscopic analysis. Petrographic observations revealed a range …
Characterizing Glacial Sediments From The Cincinnati, Ohio Area By Analyzing Grain Size Distribution And Elemental Composition, Laura Comstock
Characterizing Glacial Sediments From The Cincinnati, Ohio Area By Analyzing Grain Size Distribution And Elemental Composition, Laura Comstock
Honors Program Theses
Reconstructing the history of ice sheet dynamics is essential for understanding how past climate change has shaped modern landscapes. The Laurentide Ice Sheet advanced and retreated multiple times over North America during the Pleistocene Epoch. Although there is widespread sedimentary evidence for the most recent glacial episode, much of the evidence of older glaciations has been overwritten by more recent glacial advances. This study focuses on Paddison Run, an exposed Pleistocene sequence near Cincinnati, Ohio, that has previously been interpreted as Illinoian in age. Five distinct units were identified within the exposure, based on centimeter logging of this section, high-resolution …

Growth And Sustainability Of Ash Tree Replacements In Twin Lakes, Iowa, Emma Larsen
Honors Program Theses
The significant loss of mature ash trees at Twin Lakes Bible Camp (TLBC) has motivated efforts to restore green spaces by planting replacement trees. In summer 2024, 32 trees representing eight unique species were planted, and their overall health and site suitability were evaluated to inform future replanting efforts in summer 2025. The five soil series present at TLBC (Canisteo, Clarion, Webster, Okoboki, and Nicollet) were evaluated by soil chemistry testing through x-ray fluorescence spectrometry. This study presents site-specific data of tree growth measurements, visual health assessments, and soil compatibility analyses to identify practical recommendations for improving restoration success. The …

Are Iowa Pk-12 Schools Prepared For A School Shooting? A Needs Assessment Of Iowa Superintendents, Kurt Mj Devore
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
As school shootings remain a persistent threat to PK-12 education, this quantitative survey study examines the preparedness levels and beliefs of 75 out of 277 Iowa superintendents regarding active shooter events. In the wake of the 2024 tragedy in Perry, Iowa, results indicate a near-universal recognition of risk (97.3%), prompting a shift toward "muscle memory" training and the adoption of the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) to ensure a common language during a crisis. The data reveals a significant move away from high-intensity simulations in favor of trauma-informed tabletop exercises, alongside a definitive rejection of arming educators (0%) due to insurance …
Can’T Sue A Movement: Greenpeace’S $667 Million Crisis Narrative, Trevor Hart
Can’T Sue A Movement: Greenpeace’S $667 Million Crisis Narrative, Trevor Hart
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
In March of 2025, the environmental group Greenpeace was found liable for nearly $667 million to Energy Transfer, the oil company behind the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). The lawsuit was widely regarded as a SLAPP, or Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation, because it weaponized civic torts to infringe upon Greenpeace’s First Amendment rights. The $667 million verdict is an unprecedented figure in SLAPP litigation–it’s enough to bankrupt Greenpeace in the United States and “chill” democratic participation. This thesis used a hybrid blame-renewal crisis narrative framework to analyze Greenpeace’s public response to lawsuits against a backdrop of cultural and political economic …

An Exploratory Study In Sports Geography: The Interaction With The Environment And Sense Of Place In Endurance Running Events, Jackson Steffener
An Exploratory Study In Sports Geography: The Interaction With The Environment And Sense Of Place In Endurance Running Events, Jackson Steffener
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study examines how endurance running shapes runners' sense of place through interactions with physical environments, social dynamics, and embodied experience. With sports geography, it explores how participants form emotional and spatial connections to race settings while moving through varied landscapes under physical strain. A phenomenological multi-site case study design was used, focusing on four endurance events in Iowa that differed in terrain, setting, and structure.
Data were collected from 46 participants using mental mapping and semi structured field notes. Mental maps identified meaningful locations along race courses, while field notes captured emotional responses, environmental conditions, and social interactions. Thematic …
Analysis Of Environmental Site Assessments Of Brownfield Redevelopment In Waterloo, Iowa, Sage Cappi
Analysis Of Environmental Site Assessments Of Brownfield Redevelopment In Waterloo, Iowa, Sage Cappi
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This thesis examines how Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) are interpreted and utilized in the context of Brownfield redevelopment, with particular attention to the relationship between historical context, contamination, health risk, and future redevelopment possibilities. While ESAs are widely used to inform redevelopment decisions, there remains a gap in understanding how reported environmental data translates into meaningful assessments. To address this, this study analyzes historical and environmental data from six Brownfield sites, identifying documented contaminants, their associated carcinogenic group, and redevelopment potential. Central to this research is the development of a relational framework designed to function as a more approachable interpretive …
An Analysis Of The Influence Of Project-Based Assessments In Middle School Mathematics, Andrea Fettkether
An Analysis Of The Influence Of Project-Based Assessments In Middle School Mathematics, Andrea Fettkether
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
In today’s diverse classrooms, teachers face the challenge of educating students with varied academic abilities, including those with disabilities, gifted learners, and students at grade level. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) ensures inclusive access to core curriculum, but educators must differentiate instruction to meet all learners’ needs. Traditional assessments focus on rote memorization, often failing to reflect deeper understanding or real-world problem-solving.
In middle school math, standard curricula often lack project-based assessments, despite research supporting their effectiveness in improving academic achievement and student engagement. Students benefit from working in collaborative environments where they can discuss mathematical ideas, receive …

Peers, Programs, And Prevention: A Holistic Approach To Adolescent Suicide In Schools, Kate Nelson
Peers, Programs, And Prevention: A Holistic Approach To Adolescent Suicide In Schools, Kate Nelson
Graduate Research Papers
Adolescent suicide is the second leading cause of death among adolescents in the U.S. and is a growing public health concern. Schools are often the most accessible way for students to access mental health support. This makes them uniquely positioned to intervene when a student is experiencing suicidal ideation. Schools are a key environment for implementing suicide prevention strategies and providing education on suicide and depression. This paper reviews four evidence-based school-based suicide prevention programs, including Signs of Suicide (SOS), Youth Aware of Mental Health (YAM), Hope Squad, and Sources of Strength. The paper also examines the concept of school …
Echoes Of The Nation: Janáček, Bartók, And The Articulation Of Central European Identity In Opera, Elyse Morris
Echoes Of The Nation: Janáček, Bartók, And The Articulation Of Central European Identity In Opera, Elyse Morris
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This thesis examines how opera functioned as a medium for articulating and negotiating national identity in the final decades of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Focusing on Leoš Janáček’s Jenůfa (1904) and Béla Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle (1911), it explores how composers employed dramatic structure, linguistic choice, and musical language to construct culturally specific forms of expression within a rapidly shifting political and social landscape. Drawing on approaches from musicology and cultural history, the study considers how operatic works not only reflect national identity but actively participate in its formation.
Through analysis of libretto, language, and musical style, this thesis demonstrates that both …

This study examined the benefits, challenges, and leadership qualities associated with the shared superintendent model, and compared them with lessons learned over the last thirty years. Understanding how this model impacts dynamics within schools and the community is crucial to identifying strategies that support effective governance and enhance educational outcomes for all involved. A qualitative, phenomenological study approach was used to research the role of the shared superintendent in rural Iowa. Participants were those who served as a shared superintendent between a minimum of two school districts within the state of Iowa and have held this position for at least …
General Music Methods’ Effect On Sel Development: A Review Of Literature, Tessa M. Hansen
General Music Methods’ Effect On Sel Development: A Review Of Literature, Tessa M. Hansen
Graduate Research Papers
In an increasingly digital world, the demand for social-emotional learning (SEL) in the classroom has become a priority for holistic student development. While music education is often cited as a tool for emotional growth, there is a lack of synthesized research examining how specific, established music pedagogies facilitate these competencies. This literature review investigates the intersection of five foundational music methods–Orff-Schulwerk, Kodály, Suzuki, Dalcroze, and Gordon’s Music Learning Theory (MLT) – and their impact on the five core SEL competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.
Findings indicate that the Orff-Schulwerk and Kodály methods provide robust frameworks …
