Experimental And Computational Study Of Nearly Half-Metallic V2coga, Parashu Kharel, Caden Sadler, Ty Porter, Cole Brown, Mohd Anas, Paul M. Shand, Pavel V. Lukashev Feb 2026

Experimental And Computational Study Of Nearly Half-Metallic V2coga, Parashu Kharel, Caden Sadler, Ty Porter, Cole Brown, Mohd Anas, Paul M. Shand, Pavel V. Lukashev

Here, we present the results of a combined computational and experimental study of electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of V2CoGa, a Heusler alloy that exhibits high spin polarization values in an ordered crystal structure. Our calculations indicate that this compound crystallizes in an inverted cubic structure. The magnetic alignment is ferrimagnetic, due to the anti-aligned magnetic moments of two vanadium sub-lattices. The calculated magnetization value for the ordered structure is 1.97 μ B/f.u. at the equilibrium lattice constant of 5.898 Å. Our calculations indicate that V2CoGa in its ordered crystal structure retains high spin polarization values of around 90% under …

Theoretical And Experimental Investigation Of Magnetic Order In Mn2ptin, Parashu Kharel, Caden Sadler, Salar A. Ghumman, Mason Pulse, Alec Venner, Mohd Anas, Paul M. Shand, Pavel V. Lukashev Feb 2026

Theoretical And Experimental Investigation Of Magnetic Order In Mn2ptin, Parashu Kharel, Caden Sadler, Salar A. Ghumman, Mason Pulse, Alec Venner, Mohd Anas, Paul M. Shand, Pavel V. Lukashev

Faculty Publications

Here, we present the results of a combined computational and experimental study of magnetic and structural properties of a Heusler compound Mn2PtIn. In particular, we analyze the effect of biaxial strain on tetragonal distortion and magnetic properties of this alloy. It is shown that the ground state of this material corresponds to tetragonal symmetry, with possible non-collinear magnetic alignment. At the same time, our calculations indicate that this system may also exhibit ferrimagnetic alignment of magnetic moments. Analysis of exchange couplings indicates that ferrimagnetic alignment is more likely to be realized in practice. The interplay between these two magnetic phases …

The Global Extent Of The Grassland Biome And Implications For The Terrestrial Carbon Sink, A. S. Macdougall, B. Vanzant, J. Sulik, S. Bagchi, D. Naidu, T. O. Muraina, E. W. Seabloom, E. T. Borer, P. Wilfahrt Feb 2026

The Global Extent Of The Grassland Biome And Implications For The Terrestrial Carbon Sink, A. S. Macdougall, B. Vanzant, J. Sulik, S. Bagchi, D. Naidu, T. O. Muraina, E. W. Seabloom, E. T. Borer, P. Wilfahrt

Faculty Publications

Land cover data are commonly used to model the terrestrial carbon (C) sink, yet these data have wide margins of error that significantly alter estimates of global C storage. Here we demonstrate this data vulnerability in grasslands, which are critical to C cycling but whose estimated distribution has varied by >50 million km2 (3.5–42% of the Earth’s terrestrial surface). Comparing multiple high-resolution land cover products with expertly annotated grassland data from six continents, we show sources of mapping error and discuss C implications based on 2023 United Nations (UN) FAO estimates. Past misidentification arose from inconsistent definitions on grassland …

Comparing The Cognitive And Physiological Effects Of Traditional And Virtual Reality Exercise In Overweight/Obese Adults: A Pilot Study, Emma Kelsey, Greta Ness, Grayce Bjugan, Darci Wiseman, Terence Moriarty Jan 2026

Comparing The Cognitive And Physiological Effects Of Traditional And Virtual Reality Exercise In Overweight/Obese Adults: A Pilot Study, Emma Kelsey, Greta Ness, Grayce Bjugan, Darci Wiseman, Terence Moriarty

Faculty Publications

Research suggests that overweight/obese adults (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2) have an elevated risk of cognitive decline. Although exercise is recommended to improve both physical and cognitive health, adherence is often low in this population. Virtual reality (VR) is an emerging strategy that may enhance exercise engagement. This pilot study compared the effects of traditional (TRAD) cycling and VR-based exercise on cognitive performance and prefrontal cortex (PFC) oxygenation (O2Hb). Eleven adults (M = 6, F = 5; BMI: 31.1 ± 2.8 kg/m2; VO2max: 30.4 ± 5.7 mL/kg/min) completed a VO2max test and two 16 min moderate-intensity cycling …

The Multidimensional Impacts Of Poverty On Adolescent Outcomes, Klarence Baker Jan 2026

The Multidimensional Impacts Of Poverty On Adolescent Outcomes, Klarence Baker

Graduate Research Papers

Poverty is a pervasive, multidimensional phenomenon that extends beyond financial scarcity to encompass a lack of both tangible and intangible resources necessary for healthy development. This research article synthesizes current literature to explore the profound impacts of poverty on adolescents specifically examining how economic hardship influences long term outcomes in financial attainment, educational success, and physical and mental health. This study investigates how cooccurring risk factors can disrupt neural development and social trajectories. The primary purpose of this study is to assess the duration and severity of poverty exposure and its lasting effects extending into adulthood. This research examines three …

Adverse Experiences Of D/Deaf Individuals, Lily Buchholz Jan 2026

Adverse Experiences Of D/Deaf Individuals, Lily Buchholz

Graduate Research Papers

With over 1 million people making up the Deaf and hard of hearing community in the United States, this population faces Adverse Childhood Experiences and intimate partner violence at rates higher than the hearing population. D/deaf people experience adversity specifically related to their inability to hear, including discrimination and daily microaggressions. Researching the adverse experiences of the D/deaf population allows for greater awareness to better serve them in professional settings. Clinicians using this information can provide more trauma-informed services, schools can create healthier and safer learning environments for D/deaf students, and D/deaf communities can support each other through connection and …

Navigating Technology In The Secondary Ela Classroom: Written By Teachers For Teachers, David M. Grant, Alexandra Parham, Ashley Webb, Kimberly Cavalier, Erin Neebel, Amber Schouten

Faculty Book Gallery

This collection is a digital project of dedicated teacher-scholars who met in the summer of 2025 as part of the University of Northern Iowa’s graduate program in Teaching English in the Secondary Schools (TESS). Using the theoretical lens of multiliteracies, developed by the New London Group in the 1990s, students examined the impacts of several electronic and digital technologies on their students and their teaching, especially Artificial Intelligence, or A.I. Through fiction, nonfiction, and discussion, students considered the changes, the challenges, and the opportunities these technologies held. Most importantly, they investigated what these developments meant for their teaching, their districts, …

Music Education In My Band Room: A Personal Philosophy Statement, Dorothy Roorda

Honors Program Theses

I want to be the best band director I can be. As a pre-service music educator, I have received countless hours of instruction in content knowledge. At the end of the degree program, music education majors are certified to teach K-12 music of any kind. To receive that certification, we take dozens of classes in our content area. We are taught how to teach every band instrument, how to lead choirs, jazz bands, and marching bands, how to conduct and how to sing, how to play our primary instrument and many others. We spend hours in practice rooms, honing our …
