Second Graders’ Recycled/Craft Item Products Demonstrate Life Cycle Content Knowledge And Creativity Skills, Angela Naomi Webb, Audrey C. Rule

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

Creativity is a necessary skill for students to become problem solvers in the rapidly changing 21st century. This study’s main activity allowed students to demonstrate their content knowledge in an engaging way while also exhibiting creative strengths. Twenty-two second grade students (15 female, 7 male) of mixed ability levels at a Title 1 school produced projects using identical sets of recycled and craft items. They incorporated vocabulary words and images associated with the life cycles of four organisms: horse, dragonfly, sea turtle, and bean plant. Projects were analyzed for creative strengths as well as science concept integration. Student-made products …

Small Mammal Jointed Models To Make, Description Cards, And A Menu Of Follow-On Activities In Different Intelligence Areas, Audrey C. Rule, Sarah M. Vander Zanden

Open Educational Resources

Instilling an appreciation of nature in our youth is an important precursor to environmental protection and support for sustainability. Research has shown that involving students in environmental projects improves their motivation, skills, and achievement on standardized tests, This document contains images of the body parts of small mammals with directions for reproducing, cutting, gluing, and assembling them (with paper fasteners) into life-size jointed models of the animals. There are two distinct versions (different color phases and poses) of each of 11 small mammals that generally live in grasslands, along creeks/ponds, or woodland edges of Midwestern habitats: Eastern Chipmunk, Franklin’s Ground …

Keyboarding Camp!: Identifying The Effects Of 4th-Grader Characteristics On Keyboarding Proficiency, Amy Lockhart, Leigh E. Zeitz

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

This study evaluated the effectiveness of using the Almena Method keyboarding program to teach keyboarding to 4th grade students. Student characteristics were evaluated to measure their effect upon keyboarding success. Seventeen Midwestern fourth grade students of a mixed sex, ethnic, and racial orientation were involved. Students participated in daily 30-minute keyboarding lessons for four weeks. Students tended to increase their keyboarding speed by 33%. Age affected success inversely. Younger students improved more than older students. Music Experience had a positive effect. Larger-handed students improved the most. Gender and athletic background didn’t have any effect upon keyboarding improvement. The specific student …

Cartoons For Teaching Elementary Students About Bullying, Audrey C. Rule, S. R. Logan, Frank W. Kohler

Open Educational Resources

Bullying is a pressing concern in schools as many teachers are not being sufficiently prepared with curriculum and instructional strategies to prevent, mitigate, or halt it. This document presents classroom-tested cartoons created by graduate students that address the causes, effects, and ways of preventing or stopping bullying in an interesting and often humorous cartoon format. The cartoons are arranged into three sets for the following elementary grade ranges: grades kindergarten through second grade; grades three and four; and grades five and six. Instructions and materials for guiding students’ practice of the bullying concepts through completing partly-finished cartoons and original cartoons …

Gpu-Accelerated Molecular Dynamics Simulation Of Rigid Water, Byron Alexander Tasseff May 2012

Gpu-Accelerated Molecular Dynamics Simulation Of Rigid Water, Byron Alexander Tasseff

Honors Program Theses

All simulations of physical systems employ the use of numerical algorithms and approximations to accurately mimic a system's behavior. In classical molecular dynamics (MD), there exists an important tradeoff between the desired accuracy and time scale of a simulation. To decrease computational load and preserve long time scales, MD simulations have often ignored long-range physical interactions among particles after some arbitrary cutoff distance. In many cases, as this cutoff distance is decreased, the accuracy of a simulation significantly degrades.

In biochemical systems with relatively large amounts of polar water molecules, the error introduced through the use of cutoff distances or …

Teen Theatre: Exploring The Role Of The Young Adult In Art And Life, Jessica J. Vaught May 2012

Teen Theatre: Exploring The Role Of The Young Adult In Art And Life, Jessica J. Vaught

Honors Program Theses

The purpose of this thesis was to summarize my exploration with a group of teenagers of two scripts and our experiences throughout the process. The scripts chosen fit two qualifications: I considered them to be examples of true quality in playwriting and they addressed adolescent self-identification. In rehearsals the teens and I discussed the strengths and weaknesses of each script we read and chose to perform a staged reading of the one we considered better suited for our ensemble. A discussion of my decision to direct a staged reading rather than a full-fledged production can be found in the Creative …

Application Of Graphic Communications: Increasing The Functionality Of The Aplington-Parkersburg School District Website, Holly Janae Richtsmeier

Honors Program Theses

In the Graphic Communications program at UNI, the main focus is on print production. I decided to use my thesis as an opportunity to further explore and become familiar with digital media creation. I feel that strengthening these skills will be a valuable asset to my career development. There is a high demand for businesses and organizations to sustain an online presence. Companies also use digital media in their marketing campaigns and communication pieces.

The theme of real world application is also emphasized in the graphic communications program. Instructors relate the curriculum to the industry as a whole or a …

The Effects Of Property Rights On Ocean Resources: Two Possible Solutions To The Tragedy Of The Commons, Nathan David Miller May 2012

The Effects Of Property Rights On Ocean Resources: Two Possible Solutions To The Tragedy Of The Commons, Nathan David Miller

Honors Program Theses

Property rights affect how people use resources. Enforcement regimes are able to set clear laws with well-defined property rights. Governments set laws for conservation and economic success. Ocean resources suffer from overuse. Industry and the environment both benefit from regulations that promote ocean conservation. This paper will analyze how the current state of ocean property rights leads to the depletion of ocean resources. Though there are many possible solutions to overfishing, I will analyze two potential solutions to overexploitation in the commercial fishing industry: marine protected areas (MP As) and individual transferable quotas (ITQs ). A synthesis of previous research …

Closing The Achievement Gap: The Promise Of Dual Language Programs For English Language Learners, Jocelyn Jane Strong May 2012

Closing The Achievement Gap: The Promise Of Dual Language Programs For English Language Learners, Jocelyn Jane Strong

Honors Program Theses

With an academic achievement gap formed between English Language Learners (ELL) and English-dominant students in the United States, this thesis examines the literature on the successes and failures of different types of bilingual educational programs in order to determine which provide students with the highest levels of academic achievement and affective benefits in an effort to alleviate the differences between the majority and minority language status is education. It also investigates the research on effective practice within these bilingual educational programs, focusing on what administrators and teachers can do in order to foster the highest levels of success within their …
