Portrayal Of Latinos In Young Adult Fiction, Jennifer Cole
Portrayal Of Latinos In Young Adult Fiction, Jennifer Cole
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to establish criteria for rating Latino literature for cultural and literary quality and the existence of Latino stereotypes. This study determined the themes found in the young adult fiction selected and if those themes reflected positive character and cultural traits. The criteria gained through research can be used by teacher librarians to support and enhance the Latin collection in the Storm Lake Middle School library and others by creating guidelines literature should match. The questions asked in the study were: 1. What examples of Latino stereotyping are found in the Storm Lake collection and …

The Uniqueness Of The English Language Learner : Research Based Strategies For English Language Learners, Carolyn Lindgren Dietz
The Uniqueness Of The English Language Learner : Research Based Strategies For English Language Learners, Carolyn Lindgren Dietz
Graduate Research Papers
Currently, the United States is experiencing a growth in the number of English Language Learners. At the same time, the US economy has shifted to a more knowledge based focus, making higher education a requirement (in order to be) able to compete for higher paying jobs. Using a "scientifically validated approach" (Short, Vogt, & Echevarria, 2008), the SIOP model is a framework for instructing English Language Learners. This research targets research based professional development for teachers, to provide the essential programming to meet the literacy learning needs of the English Language Learner.

The purpose of this research study is to ascertain classroom teachers’ dispositions toward graphic novels as quality literature and the rationale for their beliefs and attitudes. Of particular interest in this study is how teacher dispositions toward graphic novels may differ across teacher age groups. In conducting research, a survey was given to a variety of classroom teachers. These participants are language arts teachers for grades three through eight and range in age from 20 to 60 years. The researcher recorded the frequencies and percentages of responses, looking for teachers’ perceptions of graphic novels, the origin of these perceptions, and …
Volunteer Satisfaction: An Examination Of The Pertinent Literature About Volunteer Satisfaction And A Nonprofit Organization, Ginger J. Sakas
Volunteer Satisfaction: An Examination Of The Pertinent Literature About Volunteer Satisfaction And A Nonprofit Organization, Ginger J. Sakas
Graduate Research Papers
Volunteers play a crucial role in the success of nonprofit organizations. Even though their role and service is vitally important, little attention is paid to the volunteer experience and understanding of their satisfaction is thus unknown to nonprofit managers. This paper outlines what contributes to a volunteer's satisfaction with their nonprofit volunteer service. It addresses the positive rewards and negative consequences that come from a satisfied and unsatisfied volunteer experience. It looks at employees who chose to volunteer. This paper identifies various personality characteristic traits of volunteers and how those traits can affect satisfaction and effectiveness. Lastly, this literature review …

Technology, Toddlers And Vocabulary Development, Gwendolyn Dayton
Graduate Research Papers
Emergent literacy with toddler age children has a strong foundation in vocabulary development. There are many methods currently being employed to foster vocabulary development. Dialogic reading, sign language, finger plays and songs are just a few of those methods. It is important to look for a curriculum that provides a format to combine these strategies into a cohesive presentation. Understanding the increasing importance that technology plays in the lives of our children is also crucial. Selecting the right technology may provide the solution for infusing vocabulary development into the early learning environment. This project will design a curriculum to implement …
Early Childhood Library Resources And Support, Lisa Catherine Riese
Early Childhood Library Resources And Support, Lisa Catherine Riese
Graduate Research Papers
The increasing demands on teachers' time and the extra strain that small districts face in trying to meet the needs of all students, can mean that sometimes programming or certain groups may be overlooked. In the Colo-Nesco district, realignment of district buildings has caused a loss of library access and resources for the preschool program. This research project created an annotated list of library resources that align with the Iowa Early Learning Standards. Titles were found within the Children's Core database, have been published within the past ten years, and align with the seven content areas of the standards. This …

The Utility Of Phosphoglucose Isomerase (Pgic) Intron Sequences In The Phylogenetics Of Physaria (Brassicaceae), Troy Joseph Mensen
The Utility Of Phosphoglucose Isomerase (Pgic) Intron Sequences In The Phylogenetics Of Physaria (Brassicaceae), Troy Joseph Mensen
Honors Program Theses
The main goal of this research was to determine if the PgiC gene region is useable for phylogenetic analyses. Phylogenetic analysis is done by creating phylogenetic trees based off certain gene regions and comparing it to previously created trees from other gene sequences. The DNA region could then be used in further experiments and research. In particular, this research will be beneficial for Dr. Steve O'Kane and others continuing explorations with the Physaria genus. Future researchers and Dr. O'Kane would be able to use the successful PgiC gene to have a more accurate idea of Physaria phylogeny. In the end, …
Analysis Of Mathematical Descriptions Of Gravitational Microlensing, Sarah Michelle Pearce
Analysis Of Mathematical Descriptions Of Gravitational Microlensing, Sarah Michelle Pearce
Honors Program Theses
This thesis will provide an analysis of some aspects of gravitational microlensing and the quantitative descriptions used to model the astrophysical systems involved. One aspect of the mathematical description of micro lensing events that is investigated in this thesis is the evolution of micro lensing equations from the formalism of general relativity. The derivation of these equations from those governing general relativity and the bending of light rays in geometric optics is explicitly determined. The relationship between the equations used to model events and the light curves produced is investigated. The effect of degeneracies in the mathematical equations used to …
Generating New Type Ii Protein Models Using Cytochrome C, Lindsey M. Ludwig
Generating New Type Ii Protein Models Using Cytochrome C, Lindsey M. Ludwig
Honors Program Theses
The purpose of this research was to create a simpler model of Type II proteins in order to study the ligand switch using cytochrome c (Figure 3). Cytochrome c was chosen because it is small, easy to work with, and relatively easy to mutate. It also already has a built-in mechanism for a ligand switch, making it the ideal candidate for this protein model. Mutating cytochrome c into a model Type II protein and learning more about how the ligand switch controls function may generate new insight into how the corresponding ligand switch works in more complex proteins.

A Heroic Journey Within Videogames And The Effects Of Player Experience, Jeremiah Moffitt
A Heroic Journey Within Videogames And The Effects Of Player Experience, Jeremiah Moffitt
Honors Program Theses
The popularity of videogames globally is increasing dramatically. The gamer explores first hand fantastic worlds. The story structure of many games follows the hero's journey-a rite of passage that social scientists view as a transformative experience. Although the content of the journey may be culturally specific, the similar structural components of the journey enable the hero to ultimately complete his/her journey as a changed person. I hypothesize that during the playing process, the gamer incorporates the experiences of his/her character and shares in some of these transformative processes. My research is based on participant observation and open-ended interviews with individuals …
An American's Paris: Tourism And The American Identity, 1947-1963, Margaret Nervig
An American's Paris: Tourism And The American Identity, 1947-1963, Margaret Nervig
Honors Program Theses
For my research I have decided to focus specifically on Americans traveling to Paris. In the realm of tourism, Paris is the epitome of American commodification. Americans who traveled to Paris could increasingly buy into a commodified version of Parisian culture, a culture that in many ways catered toward American tourists. The newly transnational period of the 1950s provides the perfect background for the examination of international tourism. Also interesting to this time period is the context of the Cold War and the great Red Scare that pervaded American thinking at this time. This thesis project will explain how the …

Categorical Vs. Dimensional Models Of Mental Health Assessment, Nic Stewart
Categorical Vs. Dimensional Models Of Mental Health Assessment, Nic Stewart
Honors Program Theses
The model that is currently in place is the categorical model and its use has been widespread since 1980 when the DSM-III was published and used internationally for categorical assessment (Mayes & Horwitz, 2005). It has since been widely utilized by professionals, but is not without flaws. Based on the argument for an alternative approach, researchers have argued several limitations of the categorical model: that no true discrete mental illness can be reasonably operationalized by categorical measures; that negative stigmas can accompany a diagnosis of mental illness; that there is inherent uncertainty when making diagnoses, whether to perceive certain information …
The Role Of Imagery In The Priming Of A Mental Construct, Patrick Michael Tiernan
The Role Of Imagery In The Priming Of A Mental Construct, Patrick Michael Tiernan
Honors Program Theses
Priming is a term in psychology that refers to the unconscious activation of internal mental knowledge structures, such as trait concepts and stereotypes or mental representations of a stored idea, by specific details in the surrounding external environment (Bargh, Chen, & Burrows, 1996). This thesis conceptually replicated a priming experiment that used "old age" themed words in a sentence task to slow the walking speed of participants leaving the experimental room (Bargh, Chen, & Burrows, 1996). In the replication attempt University of Northern Iowa alumni themed posters were placed along a walking path near Rod Library on the UNI campus. …

Working while enrolled in college has become increasingly prominent, yet its effects on school outcomes and student well-being are not yet understood. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of individual differences and nuances in the school and work domains to obtain a more precise model of Work-School Conflict [WSC]. Data were collected from 401 undergraduate and graduate students from the University of Northern Iowa and analyzed using hierarchical (blocked) linear regression analyses. While job flexibility negatively predicted WSC, job permeability interacted with number of hours worked off-campus and workload, differentially predicting WSC; while permeability decreased WSC …
Defensive Communication Between Professors And Students And Its Effects On Student Outcomes, Alexa Pomerenk
Defensive Communication Between Professors And Students And Its Effects On Student Outcomes, Alexa Pomerenk
Honors Program Theses
This study investigated the relationship between defensive communication and student outcomes in college classrooms. The researcher hypothesized that students would perceive a greater defensive climate in classes taught by their least favorite professors, and that the defensive climate would encourage the use of coping mechanisms. Defensive communication was also hypothesized to negatively affect student grades, attendance, and course satisfaction and to increase student burnout. Surveys were administered to college students, and results supported all hypotheses. Findings showed that students linked defensive attributes to their least favorite professors more frequently than they did to their favorite professors, and they reported using …
