Vocabulary Acquisition In Kindergarten For English Language Learners: Ventriglia's Rule Of 3, Or Marzano's Six Steps To Effective Vocabulary Instruction?, Danielle Marie Rose

Graduate Research Papers

Teaching kindergarten is my passion. I love the excitement five and six year old children bring to the classroom. Their sense of wonder, their smiles and their laughter bring constant joy to my life. A group of children that I especially love teaching is the English language learners in my classroom. These children are always so curious to learn, but many times lack the adequate vocabulary to understand conversations between peers or comprehend the meaning of books. This lack of vocabulary knowledge decreases their success in the classroom. Throughout my teaching career, it has been my constant desire to implement …

The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien is one of the most beloved stories of all time; it has been distributed around the world and translated into over fifty languages. The story that Tolkien created was, essentially, how a small group of people can change the course of history through bravery, loyalty, and friendship. It is a story that has touched many hearts over the years. This series of books also has one of the more developed fictional worlds in literature. There are a variety of cultures, which include elves, men, and dwarves. Tolkien not only gave each …

Sequencing A Dna Polymerase Alpha Gene In Thermomyces Lanuginosus, Sonia Tien-Yang Han Jan 2013

Sequencing A Dna Polymerase Alpha Gene In Thermomyces Lanuginosus, Sonia Tien-Yang Han

Honors Program Theses

DNA polymerases are present in all living organisms and it is expected that there should be a reasonable degree of conservation, or similarity in how the polymerases function, between species. This makes the possibility of developing treatments using DNA polymerase more likely, as the treatment would not necessarily depend on using human DNA as the base material, which would be more expensive. However, this cannot be known unless there is a reasonable number of DNA sequences available from multiple species to analyze. This is a growing research, but the majority of sequences known are from mammals. Currently there is very …

The Search For Catalytic Subunit Of Dna Polymerase Α In Thermomyces Lanuginosus, Chelsea Elyse Meier Jan 2013

The Search For Catalytic Subunit Of Dna Polymerase Α In Thermomyces Lanuginosus, Chelsea Elyse Meier

Honors Program Theses

In eukaryotes, the enzyme DNA polymerase a (DNAPa) begins the process of DNA replication. Ultimately, this means DNAPa is responsible for all cell proliferation and growth of an organism. The mechanism by which this enzyme operates is interesting due to its implications in medicine; however, that mechanism remains largely elusive. DNAPa, including its catalytic subunit, has been studied in several eukaryotes. Unfortunately, these organisms present issues with the ease of study and with ethics. This research delved into a novel model organism that was potentially devoid of all these issues: the fungus Thermomyces lanuginosus. Though T. lanuginosus was easy to …

Equivalences Of Dessins D'Enfants, Rachel M. Volkert Jan 2013

Equivalences Of Dessins D'Enfants, Rachel M. Volkert

Honors Program Theses

Dessins d'enfants are bipartite graphs with a cyclic ordering given to the set of edges that meet at each vertex. Merling and Perlis presented a method by which to construct pairs of dessins d'enfants using the permutations induced by the action of a finite group on the cosets of two locally conjugate subgroups of that group. They called these pairs of dessins Gassmann equivalent and investigated some of their properties. First, we discuss several properties of pairs of dessins that imply Gassmann equivalence. Then, using elementwise conjugate subgroups, we introduce and investigate a weaker type of equivalence of dessins, which …

Opportunity For Engagement : How Viewing "The Lizzie Bennet Diaries" Transcends Traditional Reader Response, Molly Hayes

Honors Program Theses

For hundreds of years, publishers have worked to understand the relationship between a reader and a text. This relationship between a reader and a text has changed dramatically as technology develops, allowing readers to interact with a text in new ways. As years pass, the technology available to content creators as well as consumers changes drastically, often resulting in adaptation of text. One text that has been adapted many times is Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. The novel has been recorded on tape, made into a television series, adapted for the big screen, and now has been brought to an …

Process Of A Painting, Dusty Ann Kriegel Jan 2013

Process Of A Painting, Dusty Ann Kriegel

Honors Program Theses

This thesis' point of discovery was the standout feature. Originally, the qualities of light versus dark, variance in edge quality, muted colors, and organic shapes were features as well. Those qualities were used in the thesis process but more as tools than as points to be studied intensely. The discoveries included a concept to proceed with not only in this thesis but for future works, determining time needed to complete numbers of works, and the amount of analysis and purposefulness needed to create a piece from nothing. Overall, the process of painting for myself as an artist involved an intense …

Atp-Induced Changes In F-Actin Expression Via P2x7, Taylor Hircock Jan 2013

Atp-Induced Changes In F-Actin Expression Via P2x7, Taylor Hircock

Honors Program Theses

The purpose of this research project was to study the effects that extracellular ATP has on F-actin levels in cells containing the P2X7 purinergic receptor. MAC-T cells which express the receptor were exposed to various levels of ATP and stained to undergo flow cytometry. In this case, F-actin was labeled with 488 phalloidin which was able to be detected by the flow cytometer. This was done in conjuction with controls to show how ATP exposure affected Factin levels. Based on these results, the cytoskeletal changes taking place in the cell in response to ATP were able to be measured and …

Expressed Sequence Tag For Dna Polymerase Alpha In Embryonic Chicken Brain, Rebecca Krewer Jan 2013

Expressed Sequence Tag For Dna Polymerase Alpha In Embryonic Chicken Brain, Rebecca Krewer

Honors Program Theses

Replicative DNA polymerases are enzymes located in the nuclei of cells. They have a role in the control of DNA synthesis in all cells, and problems with their function and control affect cell growth. One of these polymerases, DNA polymerase alpha ("pol α"), is a possible point of control for cell growth because it initiates DNA synthesis. The ability to selectively turn on or shut off this polymerase in cells could provide answers to problems ranging from cancer's unregulated growth to regeneration of tissues. However, control mechanisms for DNA pol α are not fully understood at this time. The central …

The "Tragedy" Of Down Syndrome: Is It Really So Tragic?, Ashley A. Richardson Jan 2013

The "Tragedy" Of Down Syndrome: Is It Really So Tragic?, Ashley A. Richardson

Honors Program Theses

All of these factors prove that something needs to be done to educate the general public and medical professionals on the topic of Down syndrome. Because of this misinformation, Down syndrome is not being presented as simply part of the child but rather as the child's identity. Following this diagnosis, many parents question whether or not they would be able to raise a child with Down syndrome and are being forced to decide whether it is best to keep the child, give the newborn up for adoption, or terminate the pregnancy. Such drastic measures result from misinformation. These common misconceptions …

Clogging The System, Harrison Postler Jan 2013

Clogging The System, Harrison Postler

Honors Program Theses

This thesis manifested itself in the form of a one-act play, which I wrote and directed at the University of Northern Iowa's Interpreters Theatre. The play is entitled "Clogging the System" and is a comedy with seven characters and one toilet, none of which were played by me. I endeavored to examine how shame functions within our society and how it is indoctrinated at a very young age by using toilets as a vehicle to explore shame based around bodily waste. Additionally, I have incorporated the burgeoning field of literature concerning how humans negotiate the taboo placed upon doing two …

Birds And Butterflies Respond To Soil-Induced Habitat Heterogeneity In Experimental Plantings Of Native Tallgrass Prairie Species In Iowa, Usa, Benjamin J. Hoksch, Mark C. Myers, James T. Mason, Jarrett D. Pfrimmer, Andrew J. Ridgway

Undergraduate Student Work

We studied interrelationships between prairie plant establishment, habitat heterogeneity, and bird and butterfly biodiversity in an experimental prairie reconstruction in Iowa, USA. We seeded 48 research plots on three soil types with one of four treatments containing one, five, 16, or 32 species. During early establishment, neither bird nor butterfly abundance, species richness, or community diversity varied among the three soil types; however, there were significant treatment × soil type interactions when comparing bird and butterfly community composition among plots. Our results demonstrate that plots established with identical seed mixes and management practices developed variable habitat characteristics due to variation …

Public school bands teach students valuable artistic expression as they work together to learn and perform music in instrumental ensembles. Music educators who claim this purpose need to sustain student interest and involvement in band to continue the art form, because band is an elective course in which students join voluntarily. Factors that motivate students to participate in band include the intrinsic desire for music and the extrinsic stimuli for participation, including a large emphasis on competitions.

A Population Genetic Study Of The Fish Rhinichthys Cataractae In Northeast Iowa Using Microsatellite Genotype Data, Haley Ann Rinehart Jan 2013

A Population Genetic Study Of The Fish Rhinichthys Cataractae In Northeast Iowa Using Microsatellite Genotype Data, Haley Ann Rinehart

Honors Program Theses

Rhinichthys cataractae has a wide distribution across the country and can be found in the majority of temperate habitats across North America (Girard & Angers, 2011). Similar to other species that inhabit northeast Iowa streams, its present-day distribution has been heavily influenced by Pleistocene glaciations (Girard & Angers, 2006). Corresponding to the distinct landscape and glacial history of northeast Iowa, the longnose dace is distributed almost exclusively in the northeast comer of Iowa (Figure 3). Investigation of the genetic diversity of this species will help clarify what steps need to be taken to ensure their survival and success, and may …

Effects Of Flooding On The Flora And Fauna Of A Reconstructed Tallgrass Prairie, Andrew J. Ridgway, Mark C. Myers, Benjamin Hoksch

Undergraduate Student Work

Prairie restoration for the purpose of biofuel production has the potential to be much more beneficial than using corn-based ethanol. These benefits include less damage to soil from fertilizers or pesticides, less management and greater suitability for native fauna. The current study of this restoration consists of surveying vegetation characteristics on four different soil types seeded with four different mixes, as well as observing bird and butterfly use of the restoration. In the fourth year of management of this particular prairie restoration a great deal of flooding occurred. The frequency and intensity of the flooding had a great affect on …

Developing Crochet Patterns For Surfaces Of Non-Constant Curvature, Katherine Lea Pearce Jan 2013

Developing Crochet Patterns For Surfaces Of Non-Constant Curvature, Katherine Lea Pearce

Honors Program Theses

The purpose of this project is to develop an algorithm to create crochet patterns for a variety of surfaces. I start with surfaces of constant curvature: the Euclidean surface and the sphere. Then, I generate patterns for surfaces of revolution by calculating the change in circumference for each row of stitches. My methods suggest an approach to crochet more surfaces such as surfaces whose cross section is not a circle. This research demonstrates how crochet can act as a discrete model of differential geometry. Producing these patterns allows for further research into the surfaces themselves by providing accurate models as …

A Musical Analysis Of Selections From Contemporary Christian Music Contributing To An Original Composition, Ashley Elizabeth Williamson Jan 2013

A Musical Analysis Of Selections From Contemporary Christian Music Contributing To An Original Composition, Ashley Elizabeth Williamson

Honors Program Theses

The purpose of this thesis was to find musical trends that exist within popular Contemporary Christian Music, and to compose an original song reflecting those musical trends. After reviewing the literature on the subject of Contemporary Christian Music, it was clear that there has not been a lot of research done concerning the musical analysis of this style. Recently however, there have been two studies related to CCM or music analysis, including a dissertation that specifically studied the lyrical perspective of CCM, and an online musical analysis of Billboard's top 100 (Yago, 2011; Carlton, 2012). This thesis served to combine …

101 Books For Youth That Feature Hunters & Hunting, Leann Seddon Jan 2013

101 Books For Youth That Feature Hunters & Hunting, Leann Seddon

Graduate Research Papers

Librarians, teachers and other adults concerned with motivating reading among youth hunters want to provide them with books that feature the sport; however many sources cite a concern at the lack of positive, or at least neutral, portrayal of hunting in books for youth. There was also a lack of any comprehensive bibliography that identified books that feature hunters and hunting, yet alone one that identified how they were portrayed in those books. The purpose of this project was to create an annotated bibliography which would fill that gap and support recommendations for reading and purchase. The annotated bibliography consists …
