Engineered Transcription Activator-Like Effector Dimer Proteins Confer Dna Loop-Dependent Gene Repression Comparable To Lac Repressor, Nicole A. Becker, Justin P. Peters, Elizabeth Lewis, Camden L. Daby, Karl Clark, L. James Maher

Natural prokaryotic gene repression systems often exploit DNA looping to increase the local concentration of gene repressor proteins at a regulated promoter via contributions from repressor proteins bound at distant sites. Using principles from the Escherichia coli lac operon we design analogous repression systems based on target sequence-programmable Transcription Activator-Like Effector dimer (TALED) proteins. Such engineered switches may be valuable for synthetic biology and therapeutic applications. Previous TALEDs with inducible non-covalent dimerization showed detectable, but limited, DNA loop-based repression due to the repressor protein dimerization equilibrium. Association Between Bullying Victimization And Health Risk Behavior In Adolescents, Ana Beatriz Pacífico, Eliane Denise Araújo Bacil, Mariana Ardengue, Thiago Silva Piola, Michael Pereira Da Silva, Fabio Fontana, Ademar Avelar, Wagner De Campos

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the association between bullying victimization and health risk behaviors in adolescents. Methods: A representative sample of 1020 adolescents participated in the study. The variables such as bullying, health risk behaviors (tobacco, drugs, alcohol, sedentary behavior, smartphone use, level of physical activity, and sleep), and economic status were assessed using self-reported questionnaires. Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were obtained using binary logistic regression and ordinal, gross, and adjusted logistic regression (p< 0.05). Results: Victims of bullying were more likely to smoke (OR 1.75; 95%CI 1.28–2.40), consume alcohol (OR1.43; 95%CI 1.05–1.94), have worse sleep quality (OR 1.94; 95%CI 1.28–2.91), and more sedentary behavior (OR 1.43; 95%CI 1.08–1.89) than those who were not bullied. However, victims were more likely to have high levels of physical activity than their non-bullied peers (OR 1.66; 95%CI 1.22–2.27). Conclusions: Bullying victimization was associated with an increased predisposition for the adoption of health risk behaviors. Interestingly, victims were also more prone to participate in physical activity.

Acclaimed children's books in the United States (U.S.) may be utilized as resources to instruct global issues. As children’s literature reflects social context and values, acclaimed books may provide curricular materials for those within the U.S. and to international audiences. Stakeholders, including librarians, teachers, national industry experts, and parents, are among those who review and award prizes to children’s literature. This work has resulted in booklists teachers, families, and librarians use to guide their book purchasing and sharing practices. Survey researchers are continually evaluating approaches to increase response rates, especially those that can be implemented with little or no costs. In this study, we experimentally evaluated whether or not including Quick Response (QR) codes in mailed recruitment materials for self-administered web surveys increased web survey participation. We also assessed whether mailing these materials in a non-standard envelope size (6 × 9 inch) yielded a higher response rate than invitations mailed in a standard, #10 envelope (4.125 × 9.5 inch). Purpose: This study aimed to complete a systematic review of the effect of the Brain Breaks® video program on academic performance and health-related outcomes among schoolchildren. Methods: A literature search was performed using Scopus, PubMed, ResearchGate, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases to identify published manuscripts from December 2017 to December 2023. Dissertations, theses, monographs, and commentaries were excluded from this review. Results: A total of 15 studies were included in the review. Most studies applied quasi-experimental design and were conducted in Asia and Europe with children. Children exposed to adversity and emotional challenges may be susceptible to various risks, potentially leading to criminal activities. Forgiveness has been demonstrated as a healing influence in the lives of individuals who have experienced hurt and accumulated negative emotions due to life events. Understanding forgiveness from a young age, in both theory and practice, may facilitate improved relationships and psychological well-being. Intensified land use has led to the decline of tallgrass prairie, resulting in habitat loss and reduced ecosystem services. The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) aims to restore cultivated land to its natural state. This study explores various methods to enhance the environmental benefits of CRP initiatives. Research was conducted from May 30th, 2024 to June 7th 2024 at the Tallgrass Prairie Center using a 3x2 factorial design: three seed mixes, two planting dates, six replications. In Iowa, over 99% of tallgrass prairie has been converted to agricultural land. Intensive farming practices have been linked to habitat decline and reduced ecosystem services, which have severely impacted pollinator populations. The USDA Farm Services Agency established the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) to provide incentives for landowners who enroll farmland to be restored to prairie. This study examined the effectiveness of CRP initiatives concerning the availability of floral resources throughout the season. This project explores the investment casting method by varying the pattern-making approach, utilizing 3D printing of PMMA patterns instead of traditional wax or injected polymer patterns to reduce pattern-making costs. The process involves printing the PMMA pattern from a CAD design and manually applying a thin wax coating to enhance the surface finish. The ceramic shell is created using a fused silica and colloidal silica slurry, with a fine silica sand coating until the shell reaches an approximate thickness of 5/16 inches.
