A Representation Of The Normalization Of Multiculturalism And Authentic Language Use In Children’S Animated Bilingual Television Programs, Jordan Carter

This study explores the linguistic and cultural practices that are portrayed in bilingual children's animated television programs, Santiago of the Seas and Alma's Way. Discourse analysis focuses on the main characters of each show. The analysis of the first season of each program demonstrates that characters primarily use Spanish to make cultural references, express terms of endearment, and as a way to form relationships between friends and family members. By exploring this linguistic practice of emblematic code-switching together with the representation of cultural practices, the authenticity of these practices utilized within multilingual communities can be evaluated. Iowa’s early one-room school system helped shape both the early social and physical landscapes of the state. Toward the middle of the twentieth century, mass consolidation efforts brought the end of the system and spurred a movement away from the rural lifestyle. Much to the dismay of countryside communities, state legislation mandated that all one-room schoolhouses be closed by 1966. The effects of these consolidations can still be felt throughout the state today. Fifty-eight years after the last one-room school closed, school districts continue to merge causing smaller, ofter more rural schools to close. Waterloo itself is currently facing a …

This presentation examines the hardships of female rulership by looking at Empress Matilda and Queen Elizabeth I. Empress Matilda was the figurehead and leader on one side of the twelfth-century civil war fought over the right to rule England. Queen Elizabeth I ruled in the sixteenth century and became head of England. By looking at primary source documents it can be shown how the contemporary opinions of the English aristocracy about female rulership changed and stayed the same from the twelfth to sixteenth century. A person’s voice is closely related to personality and sense of self. When the voice is disrupted, their interactions, confidence, and way of life may be affected. Caring for that voice is essential in maintaining one’s quality of life. The vocal fold collisions happen hundreds of times per second. They can be damaged in a single instance or over time and across activities and vocations, particularly in professional voice users. 11.6% of the US population has diabetes. These individuals suffer from fatigue, are prone to infection, and are taxed with slowed healing. This research investigates how prolonged speaking at increased …
