Ion Trap Mass Analyzer Apparatus, Methods, And Systems Utilizing One Or More Multiple Potential Ion Guide (Mpig) Electrodes, Curtiss Hanson Jan 2015

Ion Trap Mass Analyzer Apparatus, Methods, And Systems Utilizing One Or More Multiple Potential Ion Guide (Mpig) Electrodes, Curtiss Hanson

Patents (University of Northern Iowa)

In one aspect of the invention, an ion trap mass analyzer includes a variable- or multi-potential type ion guide (MPIG) assembly which has been pre-configured to produce a parabolic-type potential field. Each MPIG electrode has a resistive coating of designed characteristics. In one example the coating varies in thickness long the length of an underlying uniform substrate. The MPIG assembly can be a single MPIG electrode or an array of a plurality of MPIG electrodes. An array can facilitate delocalization for improved performance. This chemical modification of a uniform underlying substrate promotes cheaper and flexible instruments. The modified MPIG electrodes …

Constituting The Diasporic Collective: Irish-Americans At The Dawn Of The Twentieth Century, Margret Mccue-Enser Jan 2015

Constituting The Diasporic Collective: Irish-Americans At The Dawn Of The Twentieth Century, Margret Mccue-Enser

Iowa Journal of Communication

Through close examination of speeches dedicated to Robert Emmet, the Irish Nationalist, Republican, and rebel leader, on the centennial of his death, I reveal how Irish-American civic and religious leaders marshaled his memory into the ideographs of land and liberty, and in doing so mitigated diaspora and constituted Irish-Americans as not only a decent but also an exceptional part of the burgeoning American socio-political landscape. First, I examine the state of Irish-American diaspora in early twentieth century America and the role epideictic speeches celebrating the legacy of Robert Emmet played in constructing the Irish Americans as a collective. Next, I …

At The Crossroads And Spiraling Back: A Mystory Experiment In/As Descansos, Rebecca M. Kennerly Jan 2015

At The Crossroads And Spiraling Back: A Mystory Experiment In/As Descansos, Rebecca M. Kennerly

Iowa Journal of Communication

This essay is an experiment in ethnographic writing using Bowman and Bowman's (2002) mystory method, based on my research with roadside shrines-called descansos in the Southwest-and how these sites perform in personal, popular and institutional culture. This essay also explores how my work has been influenced by one cross-country road trip to visit my friend Dan Vice, who was dying: along the way I come to terms with (among other things) our conflicted allegiances to the Catholic Church and eventual turn to a Navajo-inflected understanding of being-in-the-world which helped us, in our own way, make sense of living in the …

Bearing Endplay Verification: Oscillation Analysis, Nathan Madoerin Jan 2015

Bearing Endplay Verification: Oscillation Analysis, Nathan Madoerin

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study is to determine if the current non-oscillating endplay verification method is sufficient to meet the design specifications or if oscillation of the taper roller bearings needs to be added to the method. Adding oscillation to the method of verifying the endplay will require additional capital for equipment, will increase the manufacturing cycle time, and will increase the complexity of t the manufacturing process.

The Spectacle Of Rock And Roll Hybridity In Chiang Mai: An Ethnographic Study Of Rock And Roll-Ness In Thailand, Scott M. Walus, Nathan E. Furstenau Jan 2015

The Spectacle Of Rock And Roll Hybridity In Chiang Mai: An Ethnographic Study Of Rock And Roll-Ness In Thailand, Scott M. Walus, Nathan E. Furstenau

Iowa Journal of Communication

Rock and roll has attained canonical status in America by providing a soundtrack for the expression of individualism for the past 60 years. Its current state of stability differs from its first two decades, where novelty and possibility fueled its popularity (Cooper, 2013). In Chiang Mai, Thailand, an influx of American rock and roll has combined with local Thai culture to yield a hybrid music culture. This hybrid rock and roll culture provides the space for the possibilities of collective rebellion through a community that is uniquely Chiang Mai. This study deploys the lens of hybridity to the participant data …

A Future For The Discipline Of Communication: Higher Education And Its Generational Transformations, James W. Chesebro, Christopher A. Flook Jan 2015

A Future For The Discipline Of Communication: Higher Education And Its Generational Transformations, James W. Chesebro, Christopher A. Flook

Iowa Journal of Communication

This critical essay traces the evolutions of and changes in higher education as a context for discussing the future of the discipline of communication. Some of the strengths and limitations of the 1975-2010 era, identified by Geiger (1995/2011) as the "Privatization and Current Era" in higher education, are detailed with special attention given to the increasing, if not unique, support of corporate organizations in funding and defining the agenda of higher education research during this era. This analysis functions as context for isolating teaching as a key component of the future of undergraduate communication higher education in the 2011-2036 era.
