This chapter brings together insights from Indigenous scholars and experts from the North Pacific, focusing on the Bering Strait region, within a framework emphasizing multi-level governance derived from western academic literature. The chapter highlights a ground-up view of the complexities and challenges Indigenous communities face in this region. Narratives emphasize community experiences in a rapidly changing Arctic with a particular focus on the environment and economy. Yet, there is great diversity in the experiences as well as the threats, emphasizing the need to Indigenize concepts such as environment, economy, governance, and sustainable development. The availability of natural resources drives the exploration and transformation of remote regions in the Arctic and beyond. Extractive infrastructure is one of the major sources of industrial development and environmental impact on landscapes. For Indigenous people, these landscapes are homely environments full of sentient beings, and for other local communities, they provide a wide variety of subsistence and hunting resources. While extractive infrastructure violence is the evident issue for many Indigenous communities, there are more complicated situations where extractive infrastructure is adopted and utilized for the subsistence and support of other human and more-than-human relations in local and Indigenous …

The Association Between Infant Non-Nutritive Suck And Oral Motor Development, Ross Westemeyer, Morgan Hines, Alaina Martens, Emily Zimmerman

This study investigated if non-nutritive suck (NNS) at 3 months is related to subsequent oral motor and motor skills using caregiver-reported scores on the Child Oral and Motor Proficiency Scale (ChOMPS) at 12 months in a cohort of 69 full-term infants and their caregivers. Longer NNS burst durations were associated with lower oral motor coordination and total ChOMPS scores. More NNS cycles per minute was associated with lower complex motor movement scores. More NNS bursts, cycles per burst, and cycles per minute were related with lower total ChOMPS scores. Early NNS outcomes can provide valuable insight in future neuromotor development.

In the United States, the nineteenth century was the halcyon era for local newspapers. These publications were the primary source of public information at a time when other periodicals and books had low circulation. The purpose of this paper is to explore how local journalism in the nineteenth-century United States dealt with an occasion outside the boundaries of the commonplace: an unfamiliar natural phenomenon. My example is the total solar eclipse of 7 August 1869. Editors and journalists of the time largely were unaccustomed to covering celestial events. Nevertheless, they sensed—correctly—an interest in the solar eclipse. Articles about the approaching …

Are Mondays Different? Evidence From Initial Public Offerings, Abu Chowdhury, Mika Vaihekoski, Mir Zaman

This paper investigates how and why initial public offerings (IPOs) issued on Mondays differ from those on other days. We provide evidence that Monday IPOs make a significantly larger number of filing price amendments during the road show and set offer prices that exceed the filing price range, resulting in higher positive offer price revisions. We also find that Monday IPOs receive less analyst coverage than other-day IPOs, despite their underwriting fees being the same and their total underwriter compensation being higher. According to tradition, the original collection of Sibylline Books ac­quired by the Roman monarch Tarquinius Priscus, which were kept in the Temple of Jupiter in the capital, were lost in the fire of 83 BCE. In 76 BCE, the Senate ordered the college of the quindecimviri to travel to the traditional centers of Sibylline activity in the East to find Sibylline Oracles to replace those destroyed in the fire. According to Lactantius, these officials collected many Oracles from private individuals. This reference suggests that Sibylline Oracles circulated widely. On 29 May 1453 CE, the besieged Christian occupants of Constantinople — the capital of the Byzantine Empire and the last surviving portion of the former Roman Empire — knew the end was near when they heard 50,000-80,000 angry Ottoman soldiers, including 5,000 to 10,000 of the elite Janissaries — the Sultan’s shook troops — preparing to breach its walls after a 53-day siege. The 7,000-man army defending the city knew that all was lost. The 21-year-old Sultan Mehmet II — given the sobriquet “the Conqueror” for capturing the city — leveled the roads so his army could reach Constantinople’s …

The period commonly known as the “Crisis of the Third Century” (235-284 CE) began with the assassination of the Roman emperor Severus Alexander (222-235 CE), the last ruler of the Severan dynasty. This turbulent era was marked by nearly fifty years of civil war, barbarian invasions, rebellions, and political and social unrest caused by approximately twenty-six claimants to the imperial throne. Although the end of this age of disorder under Diocletian (284-305 CE) is well-known, we have little information about much of the third century CE, particularly its first decades. It is common practice among eclipse chasers to recount the intricacies of eclipse-travel planning, and the proverbial trials and tribulations of the expedition itself. Indeed, this kind of narrative is a basic element to human storytelling. However, such a historiography skews the historical record. Moreover, well-meaning emphasis on careful planning might alienate some non-umbraphiles who have a different cost/benefit ratio than we do.
