The Impact Of Twitterbot Race On Interpersonal Impressions, Henry Goble, Austin J. Beattie, Chad Edwards Jan 2016

The Impact Of Twitterbot Race On Interpersonal Impressions, Henry Goble, Austin J. Beattie, Chad Edwards

Iowa Journal of Communication

Twitterbots are automated programs that can tweet and interact with users of Twitter. With consideration to the growing usage of social media for communicative and informational functions and to current events such as the "Black Lives Matter" movement, this study explores differences in perceptions of communication quality between racially-depicted black and white Twitterbots, specifically perceptions of credibility and interpersonal attraction. This study employs social presence theory as a theoretical lens. Results suggest that participants viewed the black-depicted Twitterbot as higher in credibility and interpersonal attraction. Results are discussed in light of social presence theory and offer directions for future studies …

Socially Supported Transition: How Transgender Individuals Use The Internet To Navigate Medical Transition, Katy A. Ross, Juliann C. Scholl Jan 2016

Socially Supported Transition: How Transgender Individuals Use The Internet To Navigate Medical Transition, Katy A. Ross, Juliann C. Scholl

Iowa Journal of Communication

Transgender individuals use the Internet, especially social media, to help establish and confirm their gender identity and to discover information which could be beneficial during medical transition. Transgender individuals often need to seek social support, because traditional health environments can be a personally negative experience, can be unequipped to address their particular needs, and can be a place of potential discrimination. Using Gottlieb's (1978) framework of social support, the purpose of this study was to better understand the use of social media by transgender individuals seeking social support related to medical transition. Qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews produced three themes: …

Make Cook Do Book Project

During the spring and fall semesters of 2016, UNI students collaborated with adult Learners in English classes at the YWCA in Waterloo, Iowa as language partners. The stories below are just a sample of all the different backgrounds and talents that the adult English Learners brought to the collaboration. At the end of the fall 2016 semester, the YWCA students were invited to write about their past, present and/or future and, if they wanted to, about their family as well. (The document that prompted them to share their ideas is on the first page!) UNI students offered assistance, as needed, …

Manual Versus Automated Drawing Checking: A Case Study, Thirupathi Reddygari Jan 2016

Manual Versus Automated Drawing Checking: A Case Study, Thirupathi Reddygari

Graduate Research Papers

Engineering drawing, a type of technical drawing, is used to fully and clearly define requirements for engineered items. The sketches or graphics communicate information from one mind to another; drawing consists of various geometric elements and textual data (Jozef V, 2014). In industry there are various types of drawings created for different applications such as product, assembly, machining, welding, hydraulic schematic, electrical schematic, Printed Circuit Board (PCB). After initial release of drawings, checking drawings for further release would be immense task depending on complexity of drawing. Checking smaller drawings (A4 size) won't consume greater time and effort, but larger drawings …

Reliability And Concurrent Validity Of An Alternative Method Of Lateral Lumbar Range Of Motion In Athletes, Mark D. Hecimovich, Jeffrey J. Herbert Jan 2016

Reliability And Concurrent Validity Of An Alternative Method Of Lateral Lumbar Range Of Motion In Athletes, Mark D. Hecimovich, Jeffrey J. Herbert

Faculty Publications

Background: Cricket bowling involves combined spinal movements of side bending and rotation and, consequently, injury to the low back is a common problem. Therefore the assessment of lumbar spine kinematics has become a routine component in preseason screening. This includes static measurement of lateral spinal flexion as asymmetrical range of motion may predispose an athlete to low back injury.

Objectives: This study examined intra-rater reliability and concurrent validity of the fingertip-to-floor distance test (FFD) when compared to a criterion range of motion measure.

Methods: Thirty-four junior-level cricket players aged 13‑16 years were recruited. Lumbar spine lateral flexion …

America's National Cemeteries: A Resource Guide For College Instructors [Instructional Guide], Thomas G. Connors Jan 2016

America's National Cemeteries: A Resource Guide For College Instructors [Instructional Guide], Thomas G. Connors

Open Educational Resources

Developing a Tour of a National Cemetery

There are many ways to view or approach the study of a national cemetery. Each cemetery has a unique history but also fits some general patterns. The most obvious focus of study would be on the history of the cemetery itself or the lives of those commemorated there. Another approach would be through architecture and design, the style of the structures, or the layout of the grounds. A more scientific emphasis might focus on the landscape, its flora, and its wildlife, and investigate what life is supported among the manicured lawns. The geography …

Environmental Recordkeeping Calendar For Drycleaning Facilities, Iowa Waste Reduction Center, Iowa. Department Of Natural Resources

Iowa Waste Reduction Center Book Gallery

The Iowa Air Emissions Assistance Program (IAEAP) at the Iowa Waste Reduction Center (IWRC), supported by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), is pleased to present the 2016-2017 Environmental Recordkeeping Calendar for Dry Cleaning Facilities. The use of hazardous chemicals in the dry cleaning process, including perchloroethylene (commonly known as perc), can pose safety and environmental concerns if not managed appropriately. In an effort to minimize these concerns state and federal regulations are in place that may apply to your facility. These regulations have been developed to ensure your business operations will not unexpectedly harm the environment or individuals. …

That Woman Who Married My Brother: The Problematic Sibling-In-Law's Influence On Adult Sibling Closeness, Carolyn Prentice, Jill Tyler

Iowa Journal of Communication

The spouses of adult siblings can have a strong influence-for better or worse-on the adult sibling bond. Qualitative data from a 16-member subset of a qualitative study of 50 adults demonstrate the positive and negative aspects of sibling-in-law/spousal intersections. Thematic analysis of these interviews revealed that these 16 participants mentioned a problematic sibling-in-law relationship. In each case, participants noted that the sibling's spouse had, in some ways, diminished their closeness with their sibling, which is how ''problematic" was operationalized. Sometimes the sibling-in-law preferred interacting with his or her own family or had poor communication behaviors. Other participants reported that the …
