Evidence Of Youthful Aging: Chronic Stress And The Association With Dna Damage, Jason M. Fly, M. Catherine Desoto Aug 2017

Evidence Of Youthful Aging: Chronic Stress And The Association With Dna Damage, Jason M. Fly, M. Catherine Desoto

McNair Scholars Program Summer Research Symposium

Abstract: Persistent elevated basal levels of the hormone cortisol are an indication of chronic stress. Maladaptive response to stress, or chronic psychological stress, is thought to play a crucial role in the biological mechanisms involved in mental disorders, disease, and accelerated aging. In 2011, a critical connection was reported between elevated cortisol and the oxidative damage to DNA associated with aging and disease in a study of elderly participants (ages 63-83) via 24-hour urinary samples (Joergensen, et. al., 2011). This connection, if verified, has implications for how stress may accelerate the aging process and the onset of cancer, diabetes, and …

Tracing Ancient Healing Practices Through The Hibiscus, Lyn Tackett Aug 2017

Tracing Ancient Healing Practices Through The Hibiscus, Lyn Tackett

McNair Scholars Program Summer Research Symposium

Abstract: By studying traditional healing practices, we can provide new information that may help solve archaeological mysteries as well as offer new perspectives to modern medicine. For example, Hibiscus tea has long been in use throughout Africa and Asia, yet little research has been done into the origins of this medicine and whether early cultures traded that information. Trichomes and plant morphology of three species of Hibiscus native to Africa, China and India ( Hibiscus sabdariffa, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, and Hibiscus syriacus) were studied using microscopy. The results were compared to known medicinal claims and ancient documents including trade maps and …

African-American Labor History In Waterloo: The Exhibit, Niria White Aug 2017

African-American Labor History In Waterloo: The Exhibit, Niria White

McNair Scholars Program Summer Research Symposium

Abstract: This study uses a labor history lens to research African American labor impacts in Waterloo, Iowa. During the Great Migration, African American laborers travelled to Iowa to work on the Illinois Central Railroad. In time, they began to work at the Rath Packinghouse and helped to build the community. This work is being developed into a public history exhibit at the Grout Museum, furthering knowledge of African American contributions to the Mid-West; countering the idea that African Americans have only been politically active during the Civil Rights Era. Historical records, artifacts, and personal interviews provided the data for this …

The Impact Of Immigration On National And Supranational Identity, Sarah Hofmeyer Aug 2017

The Impact Of Immigration On National And Supranational Identity, Sarah Hofmeyer

Undergraduate Student Work

How does immigration impact national and supranational identity? Current literature does not fully address the relationship between national and supranational identities. Globalization literature indicates that immigration may increase national identification, while immigration literature suggests the opposite. This research further investigates this relationship. Using a logit regression model, I analyze EU countries using the Eurobarometer for citizen’s identification alongside immigration levels from the World Bank. My analysis found that as immigration increases, there is an increase in national identification. This holds important real world implications considering the political climate of European countries and the rise of alt-right parties.

Plant Size And Competitive Dynamics Along Nutrient Gradients, Deborah E. Goldberg, Jason P. Martina, Kenneth J. Elgersma, William S. Currie Aug 2017

Plant Size And Competitive Dynamics Along Nutrient Gradients, Deborah E. Goldberg, Jason P. Martina, Kenneth J. Elgersma, William S. Currie

Faculty Work

Resource competition theory in plants has focused largely on resource acquisition traits that are independent of size, such as traits of individual leaves or roots or proportional allocation to different functions. However, plants also differ in maximum potential size, which could outweigh differences in module-level traits. We used a community ecosystem model called mondrian to investigate whether larger size inevitably increases competitive ability and how size interacts with nitrogen supply. Contrary to the conventional wisdom that bigger is better, we found that invader success and competitive ability are unimodal functions of maximum potential size, such that plants that are too …

Spirituality And Contemporary Higher Education, Michael D. Waggoner Aug 2017

Spirituality And Contemporary Higher Education, Michael D. Waggoner

Faculty Publications

Though religion played a central role in the founding of U.S. higher education, over the centuries, its influence was diluted by competing secular emphases. In recent decades, religion has seen a resurgence in academic and co-curricular attention on campuses. In addition, a spirituality not based on religion has gained increasing attention. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the phenomenon of spirituality in contemporary higher education. The author discusses the recent appearance of spiritualty on campus, relates what research says about the potential benefits of and challenges in addressing spirituality in higher education, and examines some …

Defying The Odds: A Research Based Reading Program Project Guide, Megan Casey Aug 2017

Defying The Odds: A Research Based Reading Program Project Guide, Megan Casey

Graduate Research Papers

Despite a wealth of past studies investigating summer reading loss, summer reading programs, and the contributions of public libraries to reading promotion, school libraries lack a reading promotion guide using research based elements derived from best practices in public libraries' summer reading programs to be used throughout the year in a school library context. For the months of August through May, promotional pieces were created and collated to provide teacher librarians an online guide for implementing a research based guide to reading success in a school library context. Activities were created to match at least four of the eight qualities …

My internship allowed me to see a true working nonprofit in action. Understanding the budgets allowed to marketing was interesting. I also worked with businesses in the Cedar Valley on a few occasions for photo opportunities which provided me experience on the more business side of it all. I created website content and also created and implemented a social media ambassador program. This was the largest project here and allowed me to work with more businesses and create a better resume.

Leanna Mysak - Black Hawk County Attorney's Office, Leanna Mysak

Robert and Yvonne Koob Fund for Student Community Engagement Recipients

During my internship, I accomplished many goals that I had. The first goal was to better understand the life of a criminal prosecutor. I sat in on many trials and was able to learn the process of convicting a criminal. By the end of the internship, I was able to understand much more legal terminology than when I started. I also accomplished a few projects in the office that made the prosecutors’ jobs a bit easier. One of those projects was to aid in transferring paper case files to electronic files. The second project was to look up dispositions of …

Intersectionality Between Happiness And Well-Being: A Pilot Study Project In A Midwestern University, Belinda A. Creighton-Smith, Junu Shrestha, Thomas M. Flack, Theodora Merle Jn Baptiste

Faculty Publications

This pilot study measures the possible intersectionality of happiness and well-being. Items were used from the Oxford Happiness and Well-Being Questionnaire, designed to independently measure the constructs of happiness and well-being. 42 items were combined from which 10 items were randomly selected and converted to a six-point Likert scale ranging from “strongly disagree” to “strongly agree” and administered to 28 college students at a Midwestern University taking a leisure studies course. The instrument yielded a significant alpha value of α (27) = 0.835. Factor analysis was conducted to find which variable loaded on each factor (happiness and well-being). Items having …
