Prairie Restoration Series: Designing Seed Mixes, Dave Williams

A well-planned seed mix is essential to reconstructing a diverse and stable plant community. Selecting species for any native planting involves knowing the physical characteristics of the site (soil type, hydrology, slope, aspect, and sunlight exposure) then choosing the most appropriate native plants for that site. All native plantings should include grasses, sedges, and forbs (both legume and non-legume species). The seed mix should also include annual, biennial, and perennial species to foster both early establishment and maintain long-term diversity.

Participant Reflections On Gambling Treatment Services, Cade Olmstead, Abigail Cobb

Undergraduate Student Work

The Iowa Gambling Treatment Outcomes Monitoring System is an ongoing project implemented by the UNI-CSBR for the purpose of assessing the extent to which state-sponsored problem gambling treatment services are associated with positive outcomes for clients. This study used six-month follow-up questionnaire data from 2013 to 2017 for those Iowans who received gambling treatment services from state licensed providers regarding their perception and opinions of services received while in treatment.

Perturbations Observed In The Orbital Elements Of The Spectroscopic Binary 57 Cygni, Kenneth W. Mclaughlin, Janak Panthi

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

We present spectroscopy that confirms periodic Doppler-shifts along with photometry that reinforces a lack of eclipsing in the double-lined spectroscopic binary 57 Cygni. Our spectroscopy concentrates on a range encompassing H-alpha and the helium 667.8 nm line, where we find Doppler-shifts of both stars resolved in the helium line but less so in the broader H-alpha profile. Although we find the radial velocities derived from both lines reasonably consistent, we retained only the helium-line derived velocities for sinusoidal curve-fits to the orbital dependence. The fit-amplitudes specify the ratio of the stellar masses as 1.03 ± 0.05, in agreement with previous …

Site preparation alters the existing vegetation and soil structure in advance of seeding, increasing emergence, growth and survivorship of the seeded natives by removing thatch, improving seed to soil contact, and reducing weeds. From construction sites to cornfields, site conditions can be drastically different and require specific site preparation techniques. There are two broad categories of site preparation: one associated with bare soil sites, and one with vegetated sites.

Deciding when to plant a prairie is a challenge. Some species establish better when spring-planted, other species establish better when fall-planted and some species are hard to establish whenever they are planted. Seeding rates of some species may need to be increased depending on when and how they are planted.

Prairie seed can be planted by broadcast seeding, hydroseeding, and drill seeding. Regardless of the seeding method used, it is essential that seed be planted at the proper depth and with good seed-to-soil contact.

The purpose of this study was to explore the variety of realistic fiction topical subject headings in a middle school library compared to the language commonly used by adolescents in their catalog searches. The research sought to find which topics were most popular among adolescents reading contemporary realistic fiction, how well BISAC tags correspond with Sears subject headings, and how teacher librarians can improve catalog searches for students. This summative analysis examined existing documents to find the frequencies of the various Sears/BISAC subject headings and analyzed the similarities and differences between the two. Seed of many native species are now commercially available for prairie reconstructions, large or small. Yet many people have an interest in collecting and growing native species for butterfly gardens, backyard and schoolyard wildlife habitat, and prairie restorations. Seed collecting is satisfying and rewarding, a great volunteer activity for introducing people to prairies, and a good way to collect seed for local prairie restorations.

Collecting native seed requires a considerable investment of time, patience, and diligence. If the seed is to be stored for any length of time, the next step is to properly care for the harvest! Drying, cleaning, and storage requirements for prairie seed after collecting will depend on how and which species are collected, the length of time stored, and the intended seeding method. If seed is collected in bulk and immediately spread on a restoration site, little processing is necessary. Also, seed quality varies greatly from each year and from one site to another, so extensive cleaning may be fruitless …

The establishment of a prairie plant community takes 3 to 5 years. Without early management of the vegetation during this critical time, weeds and woody plants will displace the emerging and newly established native plants, resulting in a weedy plant community that will persist for many years. The goal after seeding is to reduce unwanted plants (weeds) and stimulate establishment and growth of the native plants until the prairie plant community is established.

"Let's Make 'Em Squeal" And "Mitch, That's Not How You Hold A Gun": Allison Lundergrun Grimes And Joni Ernst's Faux Feminine Performance In 2014 Senate Ads, J. Scott Smith

Iowa Journal of Communication

This analysis examines gendered scripts used by U.S. Senate candidates Joni Ernst and Alison Lundergan Grimes in their political ads during the 2014 midterm election. Adapting Gibson and Heyse's (2010) approach to examining gendered scripts, this article found that both Ernst and Grimes relied on masculine scripts that undermined the feminine appeals they used and reinforced hegemonic ideology. While employing a similar mix of gendered scripts that included emasculating their opponents, the candidates differed in their electoral success. Ernst's political ads remained ideologically consistent with the Republican Party's ideals and she won her race by nine points. In contrast, Grimes's …

Communication Privacy Management In Senior Citizen Romantic Relationships, Jessica M. W. Kratzer

The current study was designed to overcome some of the limitations of current research by conducting interviews with 23 senior citizens, aged 77- 93, who were in romantic relationships and lived in senior citizen apartment complexes. Using Communication Privacy Management Theory (Petronio, 2002), the results explore issues of privacy and their effects on sexual communication in senior citizen romantic relationships. One major theme emerged: the dialectical tension of openness and closedness (Baxter & Montgomery, 1996).
