Thanking My Eight Secret Rabbis, Doug Shaw
Thanking My Eight Secret Rabbis, Doug Shaw
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
The author publicly thanks eight people who taught him valuable lessons, but who he cannot thank in person. He describes what he’s learned from a tale-spinning camp counselor, a stockboy, a dorm-mate with large testicles, a lady at a concert, a stranger at a strip-club, a UNI professor, a Legitimate Actor, and a true-life Jedi Master.
Chicanery And Conspicuousness: Social Repercussions Of World War I Ship Camouflage, Roy R. Behrens
Chicanery And Conspicuousness: Social Repercussions Of World War I Ship Camouflage, Roy R. Behrens
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
The possibilities of camouflage will not have been exhausted until appearances become so deeply distrusted that people will stare wide-eyed at the reality of a thing and imagine it to be false. Effective concealment then will be in open and conspicuous display of the thing to be hidden.
SHORTLY AFTER World War I, an American Impressionist artist named Everett Longley Warner prepared a slide presentation on the procedures that he and others had used in designing ship camouflage [2].Warner was an expert on the subject because he had played a prominent role in the U.S. Navy’s development of wartime …
A Review By Larsen Of Anthropocene Reading: Literary History In Geologic Times, Edited By Tobias Menley And Jesse Oak Taylor, Thomas Barclay Larsen
A Review By Larsen Of Anthropocene Reading: Literary History In Geologic Times, Edited By Tobias Menley And Jesse Oak Taylor, Thomas Barclay Larsen
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
The Anthropocene is an informal epoch which tries to account for the human imprint on the geological record (see Crutzen and Stoermer 2000). Broken down, the word has two root meanings: Anthropos (humans) and cene (age or epoch). The Anthropocene reflects the idea that humans have changed the Earth’s system to the point where the species has a distinct presence in the geological strata—different layers of rock and sediment which build up, shift around, and erode over time. If formalized, the ‘Age of Humans’ would become an official part of the geological timescale, which extends beyond the most recent Holocene …

The Postville Raids 10 Years Later: A Reflection, Linda Green
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
May 12th 2008:
Agriprocessors, a preeminent kosher meatpacking plant, was the site of the largest workplace raid in US history. 390 workers arrested out of the approximately 900 employed over three shifts. As is now well-known, hundreds ICE agents in riot gear and fully armed, alongside dozens of Iowa state police, descended on this small rural town of 2,000+ residents in northeast Iowa with its moniker “Hometown to the World.” Two thirds of the workers apprehended by ICE that day were Guatemalan nationals, mostly from rural communities in the Department of Chimaltenango where I have conducted ethnographic research since the …

A Review By Love Of Matchbook, Volume Four, B. J. Love
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
15 years ago, Friedrich Kerksieck and I were English undergrads at UNI with the kind of change-the-world ideas that I think are actually requirements for most degree-granting institutions. We were in the basement of the old Baker Hall for Men, at a table in the offices for the North American Review, when Kerksieck excitedly pulled a matchbook out of his pocket and held it up for me. “I’m starting a lit journal,” he said…probably. “Everything will fit inside here.” He was looking at the matchbook. I was looking at him. I was pretty sure he’d recently lost his mind.

Editor's Introduction, Jesse Swan
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
Appearance, physical presence, perception, and interpretation and reaction or response feature prominently in our contemporary national and global moment. From generating violence to promoting healing, from disparaging the vulnerable and dispossessed to uplifting ourselves by humanely caring for those hurting or otherwise in need, individuals, groups, nations, and international enterprises perceive and react to people and social and environmental circumstances. This volume of UNIversitas provides some compelling and heartening contributions to this contemporary state of affairs.

Interview With Beatriz Gallardo, Stephen J. Gaies, Polly Alfano Translator, Jennifer Cooley Translator
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
Film has been a powerful tool in documenting and raising awareness about (im)migration. It can reveal the root causes of population movement, both voluntary and involuntary, and it can open our eyes to the economic, social, legal and psychological challenges of newcomers.
Beatriz (Bea) Gallardo Shaul has been involved as a film producer in bringing these issues of (im)migration to the attention of the general public and in preserving a record of the impact of these issues on the people of Guatemala. Gallardo earned a Masters in Communications from San Carlos University in Guatemala (cum laude). Her credits as a …

Dispatch From Postville, Elver Herrera, Jennifer Cooley Translator
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
The day starts like any other in Postville, a town in northern Iowa. Years ago, a slaughterhouse and processing plant for beef, turkey and chicken had opened. Its name: Agriprocessors. The typical routine for any worker of the sort that was employed there was to start by getting up at whatever hour their shift demanded. In 1996, when I first began, there were only two: the daily production line, and the nightly cleaning. Working there was like being in a concentration camp; you readers will soon begin to discover why. Essentially, “illegals” don’t have many job opportunities because they fear …

Memories Of A Raid, Cheryl Roberts
Memories Of A Raid, Cheryl Roberts
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
Early spring, 2008. Exams finished, semester grades submitted. Many faculty and most students were already enjoying the start of summer break. I was serving as Head of the Department of Modern Languages so I had to be in the office, but traffic was light.
About a week before, rumors began circulating in the Hispanic community in Waterloo and nearby towns, where a number of Mexicans and Central Americans had found work. Was there going to be a raid? I didn’t know but promised to find out what I could. Soon FEMA minivans and busses were seen in town. The official …
