Gentrification In Polk County, Iowa, Danielle Massey Apr 2018

Gentrification In Polk County, Iowa, Danielle Massey

Major Themes in Economics

This paper measures the extent of gentrification in Polk County, Iowa from 2000 to 2016. It also looks at the factors that may have contributed to that gentrification. Five of the 77 census tracts in Polk County show high levels of gentrification. Seven other tracts show moderate levels. I find that factors positively correlated with gentrification in Polk County include proximity to an historic district, proximity to a park or open space, and the percentage of total housing units that receive Low-Income Housing tax credits. Thus, the paper provides support for demand-side theories of gentrification.

Identifying The Risk Factors For Food Insecurity In The United States, Destiny Leitz Apr 2018

Identifying The Risk Factors For Food Insecurity In The United States, Destiny Leitz

Major Themes in Economics

Food insecurity is widespread in America and has both humanitarian and economic consequences. The purpose of this study is to identify the risk factors associated with food insecurity so that state officials can tailor assistance programs to benefit those most in need. A logistic regression model is employed using data from the 2016 Food Security Supplement to the Current Population Survey. The results provide evidence that food insecurity is negatively associated with income, education, home ownership, and age; it is positively associated with unemployment, disability, and a state’s tax burden. Other influences include ethnicity, citizenship status, and participation in nutrition …

Should Division I College Athletes Receive Compensation In Excess Of Their Scholarships?, Trey Kilburg Apr 2018

Should Division I College Athletes Receive Compensation In Excess Of Their Scholarships?, Trey Kilburg

Major Themes in Economics

This paper examines the amateurism debate that has surrounded collegiate athletics since their inception in the 1800’s. The NCAA brings in enormous revenue from Bowl Games and “March Madness” without paying the student-athletes who help generate them. Large disparities in budgets and profits among Division I conferences and different sports make it almost impossible for the NCAA to create a system that would fairly compensate all student-athletes based on productivity. I conclude that student-athletes should be able to accept endorsements deals that allow them to monetize their value without costing students or colleges additional money.

Technological Unemployment In The United States: A State-Level Analysis, Courtney Krousie Apr 2018

Technological Unemployment In The United States: A State-Level Analysis, Courtney Krousie

Major Themes in Economics

This paper aims to analyze the relationship between technological change and unemployment across the United States. Building on previous research, I run a two-stage least- squares regression that links technological change to unemployment. Technological change is proxied with commercially-supplied research and development expenditures. I acquire data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics on unemployment rates and data from the National Science Foundation on research and development expenditures from 2002-2013 for each state. Control variables include GDP, the minimum wage, education expenditures, violent crime and property crime rates, union coverage, unemployment benefits, and poverty rates. I find evidence that technological change …

Head Impact Exposure In Junior And Adult Australian Football Players, Mark Hecimovich, Doug King, Alasdair Dempsey, Myles Murphy

Faculty Publications

This study measured and compared the frequency, magnitude, and distribution of head impacts sustained by junior and adultAustralian football players, respectively, and between player positions over a season of games. Twelve junior and twelve adultplayers were tracked using a skin-mounted impact sensor. Head impact exposure, including frequency, magnitude, and location ofimpacts, was quantified using previously established methods. Over the collection period, there were no significant differences inthe impact frequency between junior and adult players. However, there was a significant increase in the frequency of head impactsfor midfielders in both grades once we accounted for player position. A comparable amount of …

The Long-Term Societal Impacts Of Conditional Cash Transfers: Bolsa Família A Decade In, Brian Warby Mar 2018

The Long-Term Societal Impacts Of Conditional Cash Transfers: Bolsa Família A Decade In, Brian Warby

Faculty Publications

Conditional Cash Transfers (CCTs) are innovative poverty intervention programs that have been adapted and adopted in dozens of countries around the world. The effectiveness of the programs in the short-term have been established by a number of studies, but they have only recently been around long enough to begin to observe whether they indeed disrupt the inter-generational poverty cycle as claimed. The expected long-term effects are central to the appeal of CCT programs. This empirical study examines the data to determine whether there is evidence that the long-term effects are as apparent as the short-term effects in one of the …

Exploring Mars Mysteries In Nasa Photographs: Could Some Images Be Animal Skeletons?, Laura Meyer, Rob Griffin, Dan Butler

Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions

The NASA photographs containing what appear to be animal skeletons have created a mystery that remains unsolved today. Because they generate questions and inquiries in many arenas, the animal skeleton pictures were used to help gifted students critically think about how these structures were created. Several additional exceptionalities common in most groups of students, including attention deficit disorder with and without hyperactivity and difficulties in executive functioning, were addressed through the lesson design. The exceptionalities were addressed through methods that could be used in any classroom while using the Mars Animal Skeletons to motivate and engage students. Incorporation of teaching …

Gifted graduate students in this lesson were presented with an opportunity to explore and analyze the animal-like images from Mars using the three CoRT thinking skills. The photographs used in this lesson were provided by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the …

Mars Mysteries: Landform Pictograms, James Zabel, Mathieu Castello, Fiddelis Blessings Makaula Mar 2018

Mars Mysteries: Landform Pictograms, James Zabel, Mathieu Castello, Fiddelis Blessings Makaula

Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions

Graphic organizers are a way for teachers to accommodate students with disabilities such as poor memory or emotional disorders. This technique allows organization of thoughts and visual representation of relationships between ideas and facts. Indeed, poor memory affects students’ reflection and retention of information while emotional disorders can cause a lack of focus in the classroom. Accommodations for students with these disabilities is important because students with emotional disorders may experience social isolation, which in turn may negatively affect their levels of academic achievement. Twenty high-achieving doctoral students participated in a teaching experience designed to introduce gifted students with learning …
