This spring, I am satisfying my psychology cooperative education internship at Pathways Behavioral Services. They offer a variety of services including mental health therapy, addiction treatment, and medication assisted treatment. I am working as a chemical dependency technician in the Pathways Residential Unit. My job consists of supervising clients and interacting with them in various ways. I will explain what my typical work day is like and what I have learned in the process. Working with Pathways Behavioral Services has given me new experiences and knowledge that have helped prepare me to pursue my master's degree in Mental Health Counseling.
Ancient Roman Timepieces, Mariah Piippo
Ancient Roman Timepieces, Mariah Piippo
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
The hour was Ancient Rome’s smallest unit of time, but their hour was different than today’s version. Three main types of timepieces used in ancient Roman times were the sundial, klepsydra, and obelisk. These were used by the elite and public to tell and keep track of time in their growing society. Ancient Roman dials were often crudely constructed, but the acceptance of approximation made them acceptable. Portable dials offered more freedom to Roman travelers, but adjustments were manual. Knowing the time based on the stars, Earth, and Sun is often ignored when modern people check the time.
Synchronous Online Teaching Of English As A Foreign Language With Young Learners: How Do Teachers Do It?, Ruford Cross
Synchronous Online Teaching Of English As A Foreign Language With Young Learners: How Do Teachers Do It?, Ruford Cross
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
Education has been greatly enhanced by technology. Instructors and students can now interact in real time via synchronous communication. However, previous research investigating synchronous language teaching all but neglects young learners. Therefore, this research study aims to fill that gap. The study concerns itself with synchronous technology being used to teach English as a Foreign Language (EFL) to young learners in China via an online learning platform and describes the practices of current online EFL teachers. Questions about common teaching approaches, techniques, and tools were administered via an electronic survey to a sample of five respondents who currently teach online …

We spent two weeks studying abroad in London, England for our Capstone experience. During our trip, we had the opportunity to spend a free day at the Kew Gardens botanical center. After returning home, we were both intrigued by the history of Kew Gardens and wondered if it had a history of paranormal activity. We will share the results of our investigation in our poster.

The presenters are enrolled in TheatreUNI’s Dramaturgy course where they study drama through a theoretical lens to create analytical criticism and research contextual support for TheatreUNI’s current productions. They have compiled research into a dramaturgical website focused on topics relating to the text of Kaufman and Hart’s Pulitzer Prize winning play You Can’t Take it With You. We will be presenting our final website designed for TheatreUNI patrons, and discussing each of the topics that we individually researched. Our research covers the following topics through the lens of the 1930’s: Great Depression, entertainment industry, music, fashion, immigration, the Russian Revolution, …
Effects Of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids On Mental Health, Lauren Mcmichael
Effects Of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids On Mental Health, Lauren Mcmichael
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
Depression, bipolar disorder, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's Disease may be associated with dietary imbalances currently seen in the average Western diet. The increase in intake of omega-6 fatty acids is a point of concern, as evidence links disproportionate intake with inhibited neural membrane function and increased inflammation. This paper reviews evidence related to problems associated with decreased omega-3 fatty acid intake in the average Western diet. Evidence connects omega-3 supplementation with alleviation of symptoms of depression, bipolar disorder, and defiant behavior. Further research may be warranted regarding the degree of omega-3 deficiency in given populations of interest, such as the …
The Mediating Role Of Sleep In The Link Between Attachment Styles And Conflict Styles In Romantic Relationships, Alyssa Mccoy, Dilbur D. Arsiwalla
The Mediating Role Of Sleep In The Link Between Attachment Styles And Conflict Styles In Romantic Relationships, Alyssa Mccoy, Dilbur D. Arsiwalla
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
The goal of this study was to examine if sleep quality (e.g., onset latency, efficiency, daytime sleepiness) mediates the links between insecure attachment styles and conflict communication styles (i.e., criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling). About 244 undergraduate students answered questions about sleep, attachment style characteristics, and conflict characteristics in their current or previous romantic relationships. Sleep was found to explain the relationship between attachment styles and conflict communication styles when flooding was used as an indicator for stonewalling. However, further research is needed to better understand why people with insecure attachment styles tend to use negative styles of conflict communication.

I will do research on food therapy since that is a useful technique occupational therapist utilize and I believe others should be educated on. At the end, I will include my future plans to become a pediatric occupational therapist.
Meet Your Audience Where They Are: The Dissemination And Reception Of Political Messaging Among Young Voters [Powerpoint Presentation], Bailey Marie Caskey
Meet Your Audience Where They Are: The Dissemination And Reception Of Political Messaging Among Young Voters [Powerpoint Presentation], Bailey Marie Caskey
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
In an ever-changing media environment and growing influence of young voters, creating and disseminating messages that will reach this intended audience is a complicated and difficult task for political campaigns. Social and new media changes with each election cycle, so following standards of the most previous campaign is following an outdated strategy which may not break through in the newest media environment. With an increasing interest in strategies to reach young voters in the electorate, political campaigns and their candidates are disseminating messages online and on social media, where an increasingly large number of the voting bloc is getting their …
The Mediating Role Of Sleep In The Associations Of Adult Attachment And Self Disclosure In Romantic Relationships, Elizabeth Way, Dilbur D. Arsiwalla
The Mediating Role Of Sleep In The Associations Of Adult Attachment And Self Disclosure In Romantic Relationships, Elizabeth Way, Dilbur D. Arsiwalla
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
Research has shown that adult attachment style predicts self disclosure in relationships (Chen, Hi, Shi, & Chen, 2019 as cited in Collins and Allard, 2007). Previous research has also pointed to a positive relationship between healthy attachment and well-being, as well as sleep quality (Escolas, Hildebrandt, Maiers, Baker, & Mason, 2013 via Verdecia, Jean-Louis, Zizi, Casimir, & Browne, 2009). The purpose of this study was to examine sleep as a possible mediator between attachment styles and self disclosure. The current sample consisted of 202 participants recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk). Results indicated that sleep quality (indicated by sleepiness and …
The Role Of Cognitive Neuropsychology In Emergency Medicine, Nia Mcclendon
The Role Of Cognitive Neuropsychology In Emergency Medicine, Nia Mcclendon
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
Over the past year, I have worked as an Emergency Room Scribe. One of the most striking peculiarities I have noticed is that when the emergency room grows busier, the number of admittances rises as well. While it seemed to be a coincidence at first, after a review of the literature I have learned that it is a well-known phenomenon. Understanding physicians' decision-making involves aspects of medicine, neuroscience, and psychology, as well as an extensive understanding of how stress impacts the brain.

Using Self-Reflection And Community Engagement Opportunities To Combat Social Justice Issues, Dionna Williams, Catherine Zeman
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
The Recycling and Reuse Technology Transfer Center at the University of Northern Iowa funds an environmental equity internship program designed to challenge students to revision sustainability from an equity perspective and leave an impact on the interns and community. Interns are challenged to understand the systems analysis of issues using formal systems thinking approaches (Meadows, 2008), inculcating practices that allows them to tackle challenging equity and social justice implications, High vs. Low context communication and leadership styles (Vellnagel, 2013; Hall 1976), and understand environmental health disparities that exist using approaches such as understanding the naturome/nurturome, exposome and multiple expo-zones (Hall …

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
Cedar Bend Humane Society is an animal shelter in Waterloo, Iowa that helps cats, dogs, and small pets find permanent homes. CBHS offers over a dozen different services to the public; these services include spaying and neutering, microchipping, and group visits for school aged children. I adopted my dog, Scooby, from CBHS in 2018 and he exhibited some undesirable behavior, which inspired me to focus my attention on how to extinguish avoidance-motivated aggression.
The Positive Impacts Of Service Dogs On Individuals With Disabilities, Madison M. Simon, Natalee M. Hart
The Positive Impacts Of Service Dogs On Individuals With Disabilities, Madison M. Simon, Natalee M. Hart
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
This poster presentation examines multiple research studies justifying beneficial effects of service dogs on persons with physical and mental disabilities. To better understand the positive effects of service dogs and their capabilities, a comprehensive literature review was conducted to recount firsthand validation where their assistance has been valuable to these individuals. With over fifty million people in the United States currently living with a disability and that number rapidly increasing, the need for assistance with daily tasks can be achieved with the intervention of a service dog (Iezzoni, 2011). Existing research supports the benefits of service dogs for individuals with …
Attitudes Towards Latinx Student Support On Uni Campus, Shelby Loomis
Attitudes Towards Latinx Student Support On Uni Campus, Shelby Loomis
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
UNI strives to be an inclusive university. The purpose of this study is to look at the attitudes and beliefs on UNI students about more support for Latinx students on campus. We asked UNI students questions about Latinx students and if they believe UNI should do more for these students. We expect that UNI students are unaware that there is minimal support for Latinx students and may not see it as a priority. Based on these results UNI should consider implementing ways to be more inclusive for Latinx students.

My poster will be about ChildServe, a non-profit organization that partners with families throughout Iowa to serve children with special needs (e.g., developmental delays, disabilities, acquired injuries, and mental health issues). Since I was able to intern in many different places, my poster will include their motto, the services they offer, and how one kiddo can be impacted in just one day. The pictures included will give a good insight to what attracts families from all over Iowa to this amazing program.
The Function Of Nssi: Differences By Adhd Symptom Endorsement, Mackenzie L. Dallenbach
The Function Of Nssi: Differences By Adhd Symptom Endorsement, Mackenzie L. Dallenbach
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a relatively new subject in psychopathology, as it is listed as a Condition for Further Study (APA, 2013). Impulsivity is a risk factor for NSSI, and is a core feature of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), suggesting that the two might be linked. The current exploratory study focused on the function of NSSI in college students with and without elevated ADHD symptoms. The preliminary results from a small sample (N = 42) suggest that the reported function of NSSI might vary based on ADHD symptoms. Affect regulation was commonly listed as the rational for NSSI among the elevated …
Syllabi Analysis Of Undergraduate Introduction To Adapted Physical Education Courses, Kylie Wilson, Scott Mcnamara, Lauren J. Lieberman
Syllabi Analysis Of Undergraduate Introduction To Adapted Physical Education Courses, Kylie Wilson, Scott Mcnamara, Lauren J. Lieberman
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
With more children with disabilities being educated in public schools, it is imperative that physical education teacher education programs prepare future physical educators to teach students with disabilities. Despite this important role, little research has examined the profile of introductory adapted physical education (APE) courses. The purpose of this study was to assess the status of introductory APE courses across the nation. A content analysis of 32 syllabi from introductory APE college courses was used to identify four area of emphasis: characteristics of the disability, effective teaching practices, advocating for individuals with disabilities, and legislation. Descriptive information was also analyzed.
Nssi Stigma Toward Adolescent Girls And Boys, Mackenzie L. Dallenbach
Nssi Stigma Toward Adolescent Girls And Boys, Mackenzie L. Dallenbach
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a relatively new subject of attention for psychopathology researchers, and is listed as a Condition for Further Study in the DSM-5 (APA, 2013). Current research on NSSI has utilized primarily female participants, limiting generalizability. Additionally, little research has been conducted with NSSI stigma. Thus, the current study examined whether two things influenced NSSI stigma: the sex of an individual engaging in it, and participant familiarity with NSSI. The results revealed that sex did not influence stigma. Further, there was no correlation between familiarity and NSSI stigma.
Loch Ness Monster And Her Impact On Culture, Mariah Piippo
Loch Ness Monster And Her Impact On Culture, Mariah Piippo
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
The Loch Ness Monster is a creature of unproven existence that lives in Loch Ness. Scholars have found references to Nessie since c. 500 CE. In May 1933, a new road was built creating new visibility and increasing sightings. The monster became popular, and people began watching for the creature along the coast. Travelers became inspired to visit in hopes of seeing Nessie. Experts explain the brain makes leaps to comprehend incomplete information. The Loch Ness Monster has increased tourism for decades, and many people still have hope that there are unimaginable creatures in the dark parts of our planet.

School Counseling At Hansen Elementary, Addi Seybert
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
Over the course of the spring semester, I partnered with Hansen Elementary to fulfill my Psychology Cooperative Education internship. While there, I worked closely with the school counselor (Jen Alexander) to teach children K-6 about things such as emotional well-being, conflict resolution, making goals, and building healthy, lasting relationships. As one of the interns, I was able to meet with students one-on-one as well as assist faculty in classroom lessons. My role at Hansen Elementary has opened my eyes to the world of school counseling and has inspired me to pursue a career in the field.
What Is Your Prejudice? Predicting Prejudice Towards Greek Members, Evan Stilgenbauer, Matt Sedlacek, Riley Rodemaker
What Is Your Prejudice? Predicting Prejudice Towards Greek Members, Evan Stilgenbauer, Matt Sedlacek, Riley Rodemaker
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
Greek membership has been linked to prejudice toward others (Rhoads, 1995), but little research has examined prejudice toward Greek members. Participants completed individual difference measures related to prejudice as well as measures of religiosity, political orientation, gender, Greek membership, and Greek myths. Participants who perceived Greek members as more like themselves held fewer negative stereotypes of and more positive attitudes toward Greek members. Contact, including being a Greek member oneself, was also related to warmer attitudes toward Greek members. Individual difference factors that have predicted prejudice toward other groups (e.g., based on ethnicity or sexual orientation; RWA, SDO) did not …
