The region considered is on the west side of the Rocky Mountain range in the vicinity of Fraser in the Arapahoe Mountains, Colorado-the Arapahoe National Forest. On many of the tributaries of the Fraser River are little lakes of rather recent origin caused by the building of dams by the beaver. At one time the beaver were numerous, it is only in recent years that they have returned. On the borders of these lakes are several species of Carex, much Phleum alpinum, Calamagrostis, Salix irrorata. The new beaver dams have caused the destruction of the lodge pole pine in the …

Conclusions In Regard To The Methylation Of Phenol, Harry F. Lewis, Wesley Trieschmann

As the result of a large number of methylations carried out with phenol with dimethyl sulfate as the methylating agent, the following conclusions have been drawn: 1. Anisol is not methylated by the action of methyl sulfate on an aqueous solution of phenol in either neutral or acid condition. 2.The presence of either sodium or potassium hydroxide results in the methylation of phenol. 3.The amount of methylation is in the same order as the ratio of alkali to phenol, a tenth mol of alkali resulting in about a 10% methylation. The Preparation Of Activated Carbon Form Furfural Residues, Galen Hunt

This method has been developed to utilize the residues from the manufacture of furfural by acid treatment of corn cobs or oat hulls. The residue is mixed with 7.5% by wt. ZnO and 70% HCl (Sp Gr 1.20) and allowed to stand 24 hours. It is then dried and destructively distilled at 550°C. The ash is leached out with 1% HCl and the char dried and heated to 850°C. Treatment yields a char which is the equal of any vegetable char now on the market.

A definite moraine extends southeastward across the southwestern township of Butler County to central northern Grundy County where it swings to the northeast passing north of Cedar Falls and southward (less distinct here) along the Cedar River and just east of it to Vinton. East of Vinton it crosses the river and extends southward along the eastern part of Benton County and thence toward the east. Similar deposits in several other places have been recognized as possible recessional moraines.

The recent review of the literature on enzymes of microorganisms by Waksman (1922) is supplemented by a somewhat more detailed classification than is given by this author. The methods in use in naming enzymes are discussed. The several bases for classification of enzymes or characteristics upon which an enzyme may be classified are listed.

A Case Of Arsenical Injury To Tomato Plants, F. A. Fenton

On August 15, 1921, the writer was called to examine the tomato plants in one of the experimental plots of the Iowa State College Horticultural Department which were dying from some unknown cause. Upon examination, many plants were found showing all stages of what appeared to be some wilt disease. The caretaker stated that the trouble was manifested at first by a wilting of the entire plant which was often followed in a few days by its death. Upon examination, the first plant revealed the presence of a small mite in large numbers. These were found throughout the lower portions …

Determination Of The Colloidal Materials In Soils, D. Verne Moses

Separation methods for the determination of colloidal material in soils have been eliminated by microscopic analysis, and proof of the existence of secondary reactions has cast doubt on many of the so-called adsorption methods. An adsorption method depending upon measurement of the partition coefficients for dye with alcohol and chloroform has been devised. The soil is saturated with dye from water, dried, extracted to equilibrium with chloroform, again dried and extracted with alcohol. The color in the alcohol is a measure of the colloidal surface. The method is simple and eliminates secondary reactions.

Magnesia Crucibles In An Arc Furance, Edmond E. Moore, Anson Hayes

A satisfactory method for preparing pure magnesium oxide crucibles in an arc furnace has been worked out. Bakers C.P. MgO, so-called, is decarbonated by heating to 1200°F. for three hours, the CO₂ liberated being driven from the furnace by a slow current of air. The magnesia is next packed loosely in graphite containers and sintered in an arc furnace by heating to 3100°F and holding at that temperature for one hour. The sintered magnesia is then ground to pass a 100 mesh sieve, shaped into the desired form in graphite containers by packing dry around a graphite core. The …

The two facts which the roentgenologist must know about a beam of x-rays which he is going to use are its penetrating power and its intensity. The penetrating power of a beam of x-rays produced by any set of technique factors can be determined from charts prepared from the experience of many investigators, including the authors, who have produced a set of 160 charts for that purpose. This method of determining the horizontal intensity of the earth's magnetic field depends on well-known principles, which, however, do not seem to have been applied in exactly this fashion before. A magnet is suspended in a horizontal plane and allowed to vibrate under the joint influence of the earth's field and a known controlling field in the same direction and in either the same or opposite sense. The controlling field is that of two similar circular coils placed a distance apart equal to the radius (arrangement of Gaugain and Helmholtz).

The study of the fungous flora of soils is a field of research which has received very little attention from scientific investigators. Mycologists have been concerned principally with the fungi which are parasitic on plants, and have devoted little time to those forms found in the soil other than to observe certain stages of the life history of pathogens occurring in the soil. Soil bacteriologists have confined their studies of the soil flora largely to the physiology of certain species of bacteria, while the soil technologist has given no consideration to the microorganic population of the soil.

Breeding Oats Resistant To Puccinia Graminis Avenae, S. M. Dietz

A test of some three hundred oat varieties showed some susceptible and some resistant to Puccinia graminis avenae. A study of the inheritance of resistance has been made by determining the response of hybrids of resistant x susceptible varieties. In this study, Iowa 105 was found to possess a marked resistance in addition to maturing early and thus escaping stem rust. Green Russian and Raukura were both resistant. The F₁ generation of Iowa 105 x Green Russian was resistant. The F₂ generation gave a wide ratio of several hundred resistant plants to one susceptible. In the F_{1 …}

Since very little study of the malleableizing process had been made and also because the properties that were considered of primary importance to the average user of malleable iron were ease of machining and ductility, no attention has been paid to the industrial possibilities of partially graphitized white iron. In annealing periods of less than 11 hours total duration it has been found possible to produce irons ranging from 70,000 strength and 5% stretch to 55,000 and 10% stretch depending on varying rates of cooling of 6°F. per minute to 3°F. per minute from the annealing temperature.
