During the winter of 1924-25 the Soils Department of Iowa State College received a number of soil samples taken from a farm in Franklin county. The tenant on this farm claimed the soils were alkaline, basing his conclusion on the poor crop response. The county agent had tested the soils, using the regular potassium thio-cyanate method, and found them slightly acid. The owner was interested in securing a better crop growth. 13. During the month of August, 1924, I spent two weeks at Stambaugh and Iron River, with the forestry students of Iowa State College who were spending the summer working practical forestry problems. The camp was located on Hagerman Lake near the Wells Company lumber camp. The location was ideal for making a study of the forest trees on the one hand, and of the flora of such lakes as Little and Big Hagerman, Bass, Trout, and Long lakes, and the flora of the Brule and Pine rivers and the Iron range with its ferruginous soil.

There are over 1,200 species of the genus Septoria, all of them being parasitic. Most of the members of the genus occur on wild hosts, but several of them cause diseases of great importance on cultivated plants.

Ceratophyllum demersum L. grows luxuriantly in West Okoboji Lake, Dickinson County, Iowa, and occupies an important place in the life program of its waters. During the summers of 1922-23 investigations were made relative to its distribution, position in the macrophytic zone, and general biology. The work was done with the aid of facilities offered by the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory situated on the west side of the lake at the head of Millers Bay.

For several years the town of Morning Sun had depended on shallow wells for the supply of water for its system of water works. This supply was found to be insufficient in later years, and in the fall of 1923 the drilling of a deep well was begun and was completed in the earlier part of 1924. The well was drilled by the McCarthy Well Company of St. Paul, Minnesota.

The object of this paper is to record the occurrence of four large boulders previously unnoted. Their exact location is in a small ravine, near the middle of the northeast quarter of the southwest quarter of the northeast quarter of section 16, T. 72 N., R. 2 W., Huron township, Des Moines County, Iowa. This location is four and three-fourths miles northeast of Mediapolis and five miles northwest of Kingston. Layers of volcanic ash which are commonly looked upon as ordinary clay- or shale-seams between dominant rock strata are often very wide-spread, and pass through different geographic provinces in utter disregard to local sedimental successions. Recent use of these ash-beds in correlation problems indicate that they may prove to be the most precise chronological markers which we have encountered. A carefully set-up experiment in methods of conducting examinations in physics is being carried out. All of the variable human factors have been eliminated as far as possible. Students hearing the same lectures, studying the same textbook, and writing the same examinations are pitted against each other: one group using their books and any notes which they care to bring to class with them, the other group using no notes or helps of any kind. The paper presents detailed studies made on the temperature of the water of West Lake Okoboji, from surface to bottom, during practically each day during the summer, from May 27 to August 25. On account of the unusually late spring, the thermocline was not definitely established until sometime after the observations were begun. The paper is accompanied by several tables and numerous curves.

Some of the larger valleys of pre-glacial and inter-glacial topography have been located and described by Dr. S. W. Beyer and by Prof. I. A. Williams in earlier papers. Further information concerning these and other features is afforded by a study of the shallow artesian wells of the county and by a careful examination of the major features of the present surface several of which are hills, ridges and valleys of pre-Wisconsin time modified by a mantle of glacial till.

A Tree Census Of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, H. E. Jaques

During the winter of 1924-25 it was undertaken to count the trees within the city limits of Mt. Pleasant. The work was done by students of the department of Biology of Iowa Wesleyan College, who were trained in accurate tree identification before the work was begun. All trees over four inches in diameter at breast height were counted. The accuracy of the identification and count was safeguarded in every way possible.

A study of the velocity factors involved in the preparation of octane by the Wurtz reaction has been made and a new technic developed. Using 50 grams of butyl bromide, 10.5 grams of bird shot sodium or a 25% excess, and 40 cc. of ether, at the reflux temperature, yields of 73% have been obtained in five hours when the mixture is agitated, and without agitation, but 44%. By dropping the butyl bromide on the sodium contained in a pyrex round bottomed flask, high yields were obtained with times of reaction less than an hour. The product obtained is high …

Some Observations On The Habits Of Leeches, Catharine Mullin

There are two types of leeches, those having three jaws and those having only a proboscis. The former, long worm-like animals, are free-swimming. When at rest they are found along the borders of bodies of water concealing themselves beneath stones or in the mud. The medicinal leech, Hirudo medicinalis, belongs to this group. Most of the latter are flat leaf-like creatures that live attached to the underside of stones, leaves, plants, or to their hosts. By means of suckers they move about after the fashion of "measuring worms."

In undertaking as a problem for research, the effects of different substances in solution upon the rate of cell enlargement, it was planned to study the development of root hairs in aqueous media, Brink has used pollen tubes in a similar way; and there are numerous studies of the rate of enlargement of multicellular tissues of the higher plants when the latter were supplied with various nutrient or toxic substances. Single crystal zinc wires of any desired orientation may be prepared by the method of Gomperz. The thermo-electric power of such crystals against a standard metal is a function of the orientation of the crystal lattice. An experimental approach to the discovery of talent in graphic art is made by approximating the mental procedure of great masters in securing a satisfactory composition. Research disclosed that Millet, del Sarto, and others made numbers of trial composition sketches before laying out the final picture. In this study, but one aspect - compositional Balance - is completely developed. An objectionable flavor commonly referred to as metallic is sometimes noted in butter and other dairy products. The name applied to it indicates that it suggests the presence of absorbed metals. A characteristic odor ordinarily accompanies the flavor and the abnormal condition can ordinarily be detected by the odor almost as well as by the flavor.

Color in tomato fruits is fundamentally determined by two pairs of hereditary factors. Red flesh (R) is dominant to yellow (r) and yellow epidermis (Y) has been proven dominant over transparent epidermis (y). Both sets of factors follow strict mendelian inheritance. Size of fruit is apparently dependent upon multiple factors, difficult of isolation and affected tremendously by environmental conditions. If such size factors really exist and are carried by the orthodox chromosome mechanism, then it should be possible to prove the existence of genetic linkages between the simple color factors and the more complex size factors.
