Variation Of The Intensity Of The Spectral Lines Of Mercury With The Velocity Of The Exciting Electrons, W. D. Crozier

A study has been made of the variation of the intensity of the spectral lines of mercury when excited by impact of electrons of controlled velocity. In accordance with some earlier observations by Dr. J. A. Eldridge, it is found that the lines divide into two classes. In one class the intensity of the line increases uniformly from zero to a certain limit as the velocity of the electrons increases above the minimum exciting velocity. In the other class the intensity rises rapidly to a maximum at a velocity not far above the minimum exciting velocity, and then decreases to …

When electric charges are in motion the forces between them differ from the electrostatic forces. The magnetic concept is used to take account of these non-electrostatic forces. The magnetic effect of a moving charge is relative to the electrostatic extremely small except when the velocity approaches that of light. However due to the circumstance that the electrostatic effects often, as in a wire carrying a current, practically cancel, the magnetic forces are very important. According to our present beliefs any field of force changes in an analogous manner if it be moved. There is theoretically the same excuse for speaking …

The ionization chamber method of analysis was used. A Soller slit placed between the scattering material and the x-ray tube, gives a wide beam of nearly parallel rays; one placed between the scattering material and the ionization chamber limits the angle of divergence of the rays and yet permits a wide beam to enter the ionization chamber. Thus a large sample of material could be used thereby increasing the intensity without any sacrifice of resolving power.

A Fourier analysis of the flow of electricity in a two-dimensional plate depends upon the solution of Laplace's equation in two dimensions. The problem considered in this paper is that of a rectangular plate, the potential being applied at two adjacent sides. The results of the experiment depended upon the finding of the equipotential lines. This was done by means of a dish forty centimeters wide and fifty centimeters long. Copper strips were placed on two adjacent sides. An ordinary storage battery was used as a source. The lines were then found by exploring the dish with the terminals of …

Overflowing energy, spontaneous activity, characterize the behavior of young creatures and insure the freedom of response necessary for adequate development. The process of integration and coordination of sensory experiences and movements into more complicated wholes is designated as play. Objects which serve to increase the radius of activity arc called playthings. Since these materials of play are drawn from the environment, they are limited, consciously or unconsciously, by those adults who determine what the surroundings of the child shall be. This problem lies in the field of teacher selection. School superintendents and school executives have no more important problems than those concerned with the technique of selecting and rating teachers. At the present time the various methods of teacher selection are based upon the judgments of competent judges. The general aim of our investigation is to devise some technique which will measure and predict teacher success.

This study was an attempt to determine if the function of speech is controlled primarily by one of the two cerebral hemispheres. Cases of stuttering were chosen as the subjects. Approaches to the problem were made from several angles. (l) A brief case history was obtained. It had to do mainly with early manual dexterity, pre-school and early school training, onset of speech trouble, etc. (2) Tests for ocular dominance. (3) Tests for spontaneous mirror writing. (4) Tests for motor lead and (5) Studies of neuro-muscular action currents.

The study of the food habits of Citellus t. tridecemlineatus was carried out in 1922 and 1923 as a part of a comprehensive ecological survey of this species. In so far as the study of food habits was concerned, the principal method of procedure was to collect the stomachs and identify their contents. To make the work as complete as possible specimens were collected in widely separated parts of the state, (Iowa), and at different times of the year.

The relation of the blind species of any order of animal life to those having developed eyes is an interesting problem and one that is not yet fully solved. Many observations have been made by various naturalists, the greater number of whom believe that a process of evolution has been effected by the absence of light acting upon forms originally with normally developed eyes. Semper, in his "Animal Life as Affected by the Natural Conditions of Existence," questions the influence of the absence of light in effecting the atrophy of visual organs. The short esophagus leads obliquely dorsad into the crop which is located in the head immediately posterior from the brain and extending posteriorly to the beginning of the first thoracic segment. The crop is irregularly rectangular in form with a chitinous framework well-armed with teeth and stiff setae. (Fig. 1). It is divided into two parts, the cardiac and the pyloric. The cardiac division is smaller than the pyloric, being slightly shorter and a little more than one-half as wide.

This paper deals with the vascularization of the kidney in Chrysemys marginata belli (Gray) and Chelydra serpentina. The arrangement of the vessels in the kidney of the painted turtle produces a true renal portal system while that in the kidney of the snapping turtle permits a considerable amount of blood to shunt around the capillaries of the kidney.

This trematode, know heretofore only from W. S. Nickerson's one finding in the intestine of the sheepshead, Aplodinotus grunniens, from the Lake Pepin region of the upper Mississippi, occurs not infrequently in a restricted portion of the intestine of the clam, Lampsilis luteola, in West Lake Okoboji. In this same lake it has been taken sparingly from the sheepshead also, and as clams are included in the fish's diet, direct transfer by this means is suggested.

Puns are usually thought of in connection with auditory stimuli in the form of words with a double meaning. It is possible to transfer this phenomenon of double meaning to the visual field. The process may be studied in various transitional forms (1) in the illusion of reversible perspective; (2) in the addition of objects not definitely outlined, and (3) in the alternation of figure and background. These studies are of interest in the light of recent discussions of the psychology of meaning and because of investigations emanating from Gestalttheorie, or the psychology of form. For a period of some twenty years, white grubs (Phyllophaga spp.) of brood A have been appearing each third year in numbers to do serious damage throughout northeastern Iowa. In 1921 their range was extended to include the east one-third of the southern half of the state as previously shown. Their damage that year was severe throughout much of the newly invaded territory.

Almost forty years have passed since Hellriegel and Wilfarth solved the nitrogen problem in soil fertility, by giving a comprehensive explanation of how legumes, with the aid of bacteria living in the nodules on their roots, could grow in a medium devoid of any combined nitrogen. During this time considerable advancement has been made in our knowledge of the subject of soil bacteriology, particularly with reference to inoculation, but, all soil bacteriologists will agree that there yet remain many unsolved problems related to the inoculation of legumes.
