Davidson, in a paper on the musculature of Heptanchus maculatus (1918), mentions a small shield-shaped organ to be found in the parietal fossa, and in connection with it a pair of small muscles having their origin on the cranium and dorsal longitudinal muscles. He believes that these muscles constrict this sac-like organ.

Bilaterally operated dogs exhibit a marked disturbance in the acid-base equilibrium of the blood, as well as marked hypoglycemia. The adrenal glands were removed at two stages, seven days apart, the average survival period after the second operation being six days.

In the past there have been many papers presented which have given evidence pointing to a probable origin of air-breathing vertebrates from certain physostomous fishes. The animals to which these papers have referred, apparently have some organ capable of supplementing respiration in times of need. Several of the Dipnoi and Ganoids have been credited with this adaptation and therefore have been responsible for the transition of a large number of vertebrates from water to land. Such a change gives rise to the need for organs capable of respiring atmospheric air.

In addition to the banding and life history investigations of the Bank Swallow (Riparia riparia) carried on at the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory in northwestern Iowa, certain preliminary studies on the temperature of this bird have been made. About 1500 inter-thoracic temperature readings on living young and adult birds have been taken and the data thus far secured seem to warrant the following conclusions.

For some time the writers have been very much interested in a study of the fishes of Iowa. On investigating the matter of fish lists of the state, it was found that they were very scattered and that no attempt had been made in the last thirty-five years to make them more compact. The nomenclature, in the meantime, had become quite confused and somewhat antiquated. The need for work on synonomy was very much in evidence also.

In these critical and more or less uncertain days, a definitely good and logical word sometimes gets into company that travesties and distorts its meaning, and we shun using it for this reason. We look for some other assemblage of letters to express our thoughts. And in selecting a title for this brief paper, we hesitated at "evolution," but as nothing else seemed so well fitted to meet the claims of our subject, the heading, as announced, was adhered to.

In any good system of soil management the farmer has two natural ways of maintaining the nitrogen supply in the soil; (1) by the proper growth and use of inoculated legumes; and (2) by encouraging the development of the non-symbiotic nitrogen fixing microorganisms in the soil. Altho the first method is probably the more important especially in those regions where legumes are commonly grown, undoubtedly many farmers have unconsciously practised the second method. During parts of the growing seasons of 1924 and 1925 a preliminary study has been made of two types of woodland in the vicinity of Cedar Falls, Iowa. In later studies, now under way, an attempt will be made to determine more accurately the structure of these woodlands and to correlate the differences in structure with the ecological factors.

Strangely enough, there is even yet no agreement among those who are working with the organisms causing nodules upon the roots of leguminous plants as to the name or names to be applied to them. In consequence there is more or less confusion in the literature. At the last meeting of the Society of American Bacteriologists (Madison, Wisconsin) attention was called to the fact that in a recent issue of Soil Science three different names were applied to the same organism: viz. Bacillus radicicola, Rhizobium leguminosarum and Rhizobium radicicolum. It was urged that some agreement be reached.
