Correlation Of Number Of Vascular Bundles And Cross-Sectional Area Of Corn Stem, A. L. Hershey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The investigations show the largest number of vascular bundles in the first and second internodes above the root system. In general the number of vascular bundles varies with cross-sectional area of internodes. In small stalks the number of bundles per unit area is slightly greater than in large stalks, and in internode above the ear slightly greater than in internodes below the ear.

Studies Of The Diurnal Fluctuations Of Sap Hydrion Concentration In Young Wheat Plants, Walter F. Loehwing

Diurnal fluctuations in the acidity of tissue fluids in six to ten week old wheat plants were followed by potentiometric pH measurements of sap freshly expressed from plants at various hours of the day. A daily average fluctuation of 1.5 pH was observed in young plants. The range of pH variation was appreciably extended by increased illumination, maximum acidity occurring dur- ing the early hours of daylight and thereafter falling steadily until the minimum was attained several hours after dark. This degree of pH fluctuation is correlated with variations in the osmotic pressure of expressed sap and thus important in …

The Precise Determination Of Sulfates, Stephen Popoff, E. W. Neuman

Experimental evidences are presented to support the necessity of precipitating barium sulfate by the addition of the sulfate to barium chloride rather than in the reverse order as is usually recommended. Factors such as loss due to creeping of the precipitate, temperature and time of digestion, heating of the barium sulfate to constant weight, and others were very carefully controlled. Data are given showing the results obtained using potassium, sodium, ammonium, and hydrogen sulfates. An explanation is offered why the results are low when the usual order of precipitation (BaCl2 to the sulfate) is followed. Microphotographs of barium sulfate …

On March 5, 1927 two Government sparrow traps were placed in the back yard at my home in Iowa City in an effort to secure native birds for banding, an endeavor that I have carried on here since 1920. The traps were left in place without intermission until June 10, 1927 when they were stored not to be operated again until July 28. On September 14 use of the traps was discontinued for the year so that they were in operation but five months, the period covered by this report.

Abnormalities Found In A Two Headed Calf, Horace Essex, Marshall Huston

Whether nature had outdone herself or had attempted a bovine monstrosity was the subject of much discussion in our laboratory two weeks ago when a calf with two fully developed heads was brought to us. It was a Hereford calf born of a cow that had previously delivered four normal calves. Mr. F. L. Hultquist, the owner, who lives near Swedesburg asserts that the calf was alive in the early part of delivery, but was in an abnormal position in the uterus. The use of a block and tackle during delivery was probably the cause of its death.

One of these products is maizolith, which resembles hard rubber in many respects. This investigation deals particularly with the following electrical properties of maizolith; di-electric constant, power factor, specific resistivity and surface resistivity.

An Investigation Of The Critical Potentials Of The Spark Spectrum Of Cadmium, Dever Colson

The direct spectroscopic method was used in which the spectrum was excited by electron impact. The accelerating voltage on the electrons was varied 8.8 (ionization potential of Cd) up to 200 volts. Measurements on the films were made with a microphotometer. The effects of change of plate current and vapor pressure were investigated.

To secure information preliminary to the laying out of field experiments for a study of the value of liming and growing inoculated legumes on the Grundy silt loam, an important soil type in Southern Iowa, tests have been conducted on this soil during the past winter in the greenhouse and laboratory. These tests were planned to study the effect of various amounts of limestone and to determine the influence of lime alone and in combination with certain fertilizers on crop yields and on the biological and chemical conditions in the soil.

Spore germination in the Nidulariaceae and in a closely related family, Sphaerobolaceae, has been very difficult to obtain. The most successful attempt to germinate spores of either family has been reported by Eidam, who germinated the spores of Crucibulum vulgare and Cyathus striatus by keeping them in a saturated atmosphere for twenty-four hours at 20° to 25°C. Various kinds of media were used but horse dung decoction proved the best.

The determination of the oxidation-reduction potentials is more reliable from equilibrium data than from electromotive force data. The potential of the ferric-ferrous electrode was calculated from the experimentally determined equilibrium constant of the reaction: 2Fe (ClO4)3 +2Hg⇔ 2Fe (ClO4)2+Hg2 (ClO4)2 The perchlorates, mercury, and perchloric acid are better suited for the determination of the equilibrium constant than the nitrates, silver and nitric acid employed by A. A. Noyes and Braun (J. Arn. Chem. Soc. 34, 1016, 1912). The true equilibrium constant of the reaction was determined by suitable experimental …

This synthesis involves the condensation of a phenol with a nitrile (aliphatic or aromatic). It is effected by the passage of dry hydrogen chloride through their solution in anhydrous ether, with or without the addition of dry zinc chloride. Anhydrous aluminum chloride was substituted for zinc chloride in some cases.

This product, known technically as cresidine, was first obtained by Hofmann and Miller [Ber., 14, 573 (1881)]. Before the present work, however, only two substitution products had been obtained from it, viz., the 6-nitro and the 6-chloro derivatives. In this work a monobrom derivative has been prepared and its structure established. It readily forms a quaternary ammonium iodide, therefore the bromine atom does not occupy position 2, adjacent to the amino group, as this would hinder the formation of such a salt. 3-5-Dibrom-4-methoxytoluene was synthesized and found to be different from the dibrom derivative obtained from the compound in question …

A vacuum tube circuit is described by means of which a pulse of voltage (such as that produced by the discharge of a condenser through a resistance) is amplified and produces a throw in a ballistic galvanometer. The device is quantitative and the experimentally determined amplification agrees with the computed.
