The Physiology Of Physical Condition, H. Earl Rath Oct 1930

The Physiology Of Physical Condition, H. Earl Rath

Science Bulletin

Some men willfully break training rules because they think more of their own personal pleasure than they do of the success of the team or their own success as athletes. The treatment, if any, for this sort of individual must be mental. Many boys fail to observe training rules because they do not know what good physical condition is, or because they do not see the necessity of doing certain things in order to obtain it. It is for this latter group that this article is written, with the hope that it will make easier the grind of training by …

The Questionnaire Oct 1930

The Questionnaire

Science Bulletin

The request for suggestions which was sent out with the September number of the Bulletin brought a flood of unexpected magnitude. The editor was quite inundated, and even now has only partially emerged. But it was a welcome flood, which showed clearly what the science teachers of Iowa wish in such a bulletin-wish individually. Collectively they are not in all respects agreed.

Environment As A Factor In The Growth And Distribution Of Plants, O. R. Clark Oct 1930

Environment As A Factor In The Growth And Distribution Of Plants, O. R. Clark

Science Bulletin

The form and appearance of plants and the activities which they carry on are due in large part to the inherited characteristics of their ancestors. The influence which heredity exerts should be clearly and forcefully presented to students. At the same time the expression of the hereditary traits may be greatly modified by the conditions under which! the plants grow.

''To know everything and to know nothing according as it acts under normal or exceptional conditions: that is the strange antithesis presented by the insect race.” So said that profound student of insects, Fabre, after an immense amount of experimentation.

The Romance Of The Great Golden Digger, Roy L. Abbott

Every year for the last fifteen years (and perhaps for much longer) a number of digger wasps have made their nests in the hard-packed sanely soil between Professor Fullerton's room and the heating plant on the campus of the Iowa State Teachers College.

General Science: Astronomy, E. J. Cable Sep 1930

General Science: Astronomy, E. J. Cable

Science Bulletin

General science is, as the name suggests, a study of the practical applications of the physical and natural sciences. To be a good teacher of the subject one should have a working understanding of the fundamental principles of physics, chemistry, biology, physiography, astronomy and climatology. General science, when taught as such in the grades or junior high school, should aid boys and girls to interpret, in an intelligent and meaningful way, the application of these principles to everyday life.

Natural Science: Seed Corn, Winfield Scott Sep 1930

Natural Science: Seed Corn, Winfield Scott

Science Bulletin

Again we come to the annual problem of seed corn and show corn. In the first place good seed corn is important to all of us because missing hills and barren stalks mean wasted labor, wasted time, and wasted land. Since human labor and time are our most valuable assets why waste them through useless endeavor by planting corn which will not grow nor yield?

We, The Jury, R. W. Getchell Sep 1930

We, The Jury, R. W. Getchell

Science Bulletin

Iowa high schools may justly be proud of their chemistry courses and of their chemistry teachers. The state ranks low in the number of schools offering this science but high in the quality of its teaching staff. One sure criterion of instructional efficiency is growth - a growth based upon the frank recognition of mistakes and intelligent effort to correct them.

Planning The Year's Work

Science Bulletin

One of the important things for the science teacher to do at this season is to lay definite plans for the work of the semester or year. One way to do this is to entrust everything to the text book.

Insects And Man, Roy L. Abbott May 1930

Insects And Man, Roy L. Abbott

Science Bulletin

Because of their relationship to dangerous human parasites, insects have been responsible for the death of more people than all other animals put together. Confirmation of this astounding statement can be seen in the close relationship between houseflies and typhoid fever, between rat fleas and plague, tsetse flies and sleeping sickness, and that between mosquitoes and yellow fever and malaria.
