The Effect Of Lime On The Availability Of Phosphate In Tama Silt Loam, G. B. Killinger, F. B. Smith Jan 1933

The Effect Of Lime On The Availability Of Phosphate In Tama Silt Loam, G. B. Killinger, F. B. Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Calcium limestone and dolomitic limestone were applied to Tama silt loam in pots in the greenhouse. The soil had a lime requirement of 3 tons per acre ancl the pH was 5.30. Rock phosphate was applied at the rate of 250 pounds per acre alone and in combination with calcium limestone and with dolomitic limestone. Samples of the variously treated soils were taken after 4, 8, 12, and 18 weeks for the determination of pH and available phosphate.

Variations In The Chemical Composition Of Soils Of Various Types, G. B. Killinger, F. B. Smith Jan 1933

Variations In The Chemical Composition Of Soils Of Various Types, G. B. Killinger, F. B. Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, silica, iron, alumina, and base-exchange capacity were determined on nine Iowa soils and correlations made in an attempt to devise a system of soil mapping to be used when these constituents of the soil and soil extract were known. The results secured indicate a definite relationship between these constituents in each of the soils studied. However, no apparent relationship existed between the variations and soil type. The P2O3 content of all soils was found to vary directly with the base-exchange capacity of the soil.

The Effects Of Potash And Crop Residues On Available Potassium In Some Alkali Soils Of Iowa, Hartzell C. Dean, F. B. Smith Jan 1933

The Effects Of Potash And Crop Residues On Available Potassium In Some Alkali Soils Of Iowa, Hartzell C. Dean, F. B. Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Many investigators have found that high-lime soils may often be deficient in available potassium. According to the present theory, the low availability of the potassium in such soils is probably due to the high concentrations of calcium salts. The "so-called" alkali soils of Iowa have been found to contain high concentrations of both calcium carbonate and calcium bicarbonate. Apparently the concentrations of these salts are so high that they tend to depress the availability of the potassium in the soil.

The Salt Effect Of Certain Indicators In Slightly Buffered Solutions, John A. Dudycha, Ben H. Peterson Jan 1933

The Salt Effect Of Certain Indicators In Slightly Buffered Solutions, John A. Dudycha, Ben H. Peterson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The change in the colorimetric pH with changes in salt concentration is determined with reference to the quinhydrone electrode. The salts used caused a more alkaline reading with the quinhydrone electrode and a more acid reading with the colorimetric method. The effect is much more pronounced in the lower concentrations. The "colorimetric pH" does not change appreciably in concentrations from about 1 molar to saturation.

Some Reactions In Liquid Sulfur Dioxide, Jacob Cornog, Vernon A. Lamb Jan 1933

Some Reactions In Liquid Sulfur Dioxide, Jacob Cornog, Vernon A. Lamb

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Experiments by the authors support the following observations. l. Reactions in liquid sulfur dioxide are usually solvolytic in the sense that the solvent participates in the reactions. 2. Liquid sulfur dioxide under atmospheric pressure does not appreciably react with chlorine save in the presence of a catalyst. 3. Thionyl chloride and sodium sulfite do not react as indicated in the following equation:. SOCl2 + Na2SO3 =NaCl+ 2 SO24. Iodine monochloride and potassium thiocyanate react to form the products indicated in the following equation: 3 KCNS + 3 ICl + 2 SO2 = 3 …

Studies On Regeneration Of Hemoglobin, H. L. Keil, Victor E. Nelson Jan 1933

Studies On Regeneration Of Hemoglobin, H. L. Keil, Victor E. Nelson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Many investigators in the past few years have been interested in the problem of the relation of iron to anemia. This problem originated in connection with studies involving a comparison of inorganic versus organic iron, which later led to studies on the relation of solubility of iron compounds to regeneration of hemoglobin and the treatment of anemia.

The Carboaryloxy Radical In The Migration Of Acyl From Nitrogen To Oxygen In Ortho Aminophenol Derivatives, L. Chas Raiford, G. O. Inman Jan 1933

The Carboaryloxy Radical In The Migration Of Acyl From Nitrogen To Oxygen In Ortho Aminophenol Derivatives, L. Chas Raiford, G. O. Inman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It has been shown, in general, that only one acetyl-benzoyl derivative of ortho aminophenols can be prepared, regardless of the order in which the acyl groups are introduced, and that in this product the benzoyl radical is always found attached to nitrogen. In the recent study of mixed diocyl derivatives of ortho aminophenols in which one of the radicals was the carboaryloxy group, attempts to determine the structure by means of hydrolysis with alkali caused the formation of a carbonylaminophenol.

The Role Of Liver In Growth, Reproduction And Lactation, H. Gregg Smith, Walter H. Seegers Jan 1933

The Role Of Liver In Growth, Reproduction And Lactation, H. Gregg Smith, Walter H. Seegers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Alcohol-extracted beef liver was fed to albino rats as the only source of protein in a ration adequate in the recognized factors necessary for normal nutrition, the vitamins being supplied by yeast, cod liver oil and hydrogenated cottonseed oil (Crisco) ; the latter furnished the fat of the basal diet. The ration was found to be inadequate for optimum growth, reproduction and lactation. Supplementing the basal diet with 0.5 g. of raw liver or replacing the extracted-liver of the basal diet with whole dried liver greatly increased the growth rate and improved lactation.

The Availabilty Of Indole Derivatives For Supplementing Diets Derivatives In Tryptophane, Lyle C. Bauguess, Clarence P. Berg Jan 1933

The Availabilty Of Indole Derivatives For Supplementing Diets Derivatives In Tryptophane, Lyle C. Bauguess, Clarence P. Berg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Interest in the possibility of replacing essential amino acids in the diet with synthetic products more or less closely related in chemical structure has led us to synthesize β -3-indoleacrylic acid and α-oximino-β-3-indolepropionic acid and feed them to rats in conjunction with a diet deficient in tryptophane. Reports in the literature on the availability of β-4-imidazoleacrylic acid in supplementing diets deficient in histidine are conflicting. No α-oximino acid has been studied in this connection. The oxime of pyruvic acid, however, has been shown to undergo reduction, in the presence of vigorously fermenting yeast, to alanine.

Condensation Of Vanillin Substitution Products With Methylene Derivatives, L. Chas. Raiford, Donald E. Fox Jan 1933

Condensation Of Vanillin Substitution Products With Methylene Derivatives, L. Chas. Raiford, Donald E. Fox

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Some compounds containing a methylene group adjacent to certain activating radicals will interact with the carbonyl radicals of aldehydes and ketones. These condensations seem to depend chiefly on (a) the nature of substituents in the starting materials, and (b) the character of the condensing agents.

Steric Hindrance As A Factor In The Hydrolytic Stability Of Aromatic Ketimines, J. B. Culbertson, Rachel Albright, Drew Baker, Paul Sweitzer Jan 1933

Steric Hindrance As A Factor In The Hydrolytic Stability Of Aromatic Ketimines, J. B. Culbertson, Rachel Albright, Drew Baker, Paul Sweitzer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A comparison of the velocities of hydrolysis of the 2-, the 3- and the 4-methyl diphenyl ketimine hydrochlorides, in which the velocity of the first is very much slower than either of the other two, suggests steric hindrance. The very slow rate of hydrolysis of 2, 4, 6-trihydroxy diphenyl ketimine hydrochloride has been reported by one of us. This slow rate may be accounted for on the basis of the multiple opportunities for tautomerism involving the very stable enamine forms. We have recently found 2-methyl, 4, 6-dihydroxy di phenyl (orcinyl phenyl) ketimine hydrochloride to be even more slowly hydrolyzed. It …

The Determination Of Manganese In Biological Material, Norman Ashwell Clark Jan 1933

The Determination Of Manganese In Biological Material, Norman Ashwell Clark

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One of the best methods for the determination of manganese in very small amounts in biological material is the adaptation of Willard's oxidation of the Mn in acid solution by KIO4 , and a comparison in Nessler tubes of the color produced, with a known standard similarly treated. Skinner and Peterson showed that if animal tissue was ashed in a muffle furnace and extracted with H2PO4 , the KIO4 oxidized the Mn in the solution without loss of color. They found 0.01 mg Mn in 50 cc. solution gave a readable color in Nessler tubes against an …

Structure Of The Des Moines Series At Redfield, Iowa, C. S. Gwynne Jan 1933

Structure Of The Des Moines Series At Redfield, Iowa, C. S. Gwynne

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In southwestern Dallas County, in the vicinity of Redfield and for several miles farther east along the Raccoon River, there are exposures of sandstones and shales of the Des Moines series. These were studied by Leonard who concluded that the strata were not flat lying nor with a gentle southwest dip, but assumed the form of an anticline of presumably north-south axis in the vicinity of Redfield. He based this conclusion upon an apparent rise of a prominent sandstone member along the Raccoon River west toward Redfield, upon the non-appearance, at Redfield, of beds found in sections east and west …

Status Of The Devonian Beds At Middle Amana, S. W. Stookey Jan 1933

Status Of The Devonian Beds At Middle Amana, S. W. Stookey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the process of road-making west of Middle Amana, in 1931, the grader exposed the country rock beneath the drift for a distance of about one mile on the north side of the road. The beds consist of shales with calcareous layers interbedded. They carry an abundant Brachiopod fauna with crinoid stems and a few cup corals and gastropods. This fauna seems to be practically identical with that of the Independence shales of Buchanan County, and bears the same remarkable relationship to the Lime Creek fauna that the Independence does.
