Tonal Quality Of Orchestral Instruments, D. A. Rothschild Jan 1934

Tonal Quality Of Orchestral Instruments, D. A. Rothschild

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

By means of a high speed oscillograph, sound waves were recorded of the principal orchestral instruments. The harmonic contents of the orchestral tones were determined by means of the Henrici harmonic analyzer. Two main problems were suggested for solution. First, as we increase the fundamental pitch, what is the resulting qualitative change in the structure of the tone? In the second place, what changes are evident as the intensity of the tones is varied?

A Photographic Study Of The Use Of Intensity By Superior Speakers, Max D. Steer, Joseph Tiffin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This report covers the first study in a series now being made for the purpose of determining the basic characteristics of superior speech.

Effects Of Ultracentrifuging On Certain Cell Structures, R. L. King, H. W. Beams Jan 1934

Effects Of Ultracentrifuging On Certain Cell Structures, R. L. King, H. W. Beams

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Extremely great centrifugal forces may be obtained by the use of the air-driven ultracentrifuge developed by J. W. Beams and his associates. Such forces afford a means of testing the viscosity and relative specific gravity of many cell components. The authors have been able to establish the fact that the Nissl bodies of rat ganglion cells represent a definite material in the cell and are not the result of the action of the fixative used on homogeneous cytoplasm; likewise, for the Golgi material in the uterine gland cells of the guinea pig. In general the chromatin has been shown to …

Notes On The Hatchability And Infectivity Of Refrigerated Eggs Of Fasciola Hepatica Linn, Wendell H. Krull Jan 1934

Notes On The Hatchability And Infectivity Of Refrigerated Eggs Of Fasciola Hepatica Linn, Wendell H. Krull

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The problem of the longevity of trematode eggs, particularly of those which have been kept for varying periods of time at low temperatures to retard development is, apparently, one which has not been investigated to any great extent. It is, nevertheless, admitted that literature on such a subject is difficult to find and it may be far more extensive than the following survey would indicate.

Seasonal Variation In Birds, Emil Witschi Jan 1934

Seasonal Variation In Birds, Emil Witschi

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Wild birds show cyclical alternation between breeding seasons and seasons of sexual inactivity. During the latter the sex glands are at rest and are very small. With the approach of the breeding season they start to grow rapidly, -- increasing in volume up to one thousand times. Accompanying this growth of the gonads many secondary sex characters also show a characteristic development. This is true in first respect for the sperm- and oviducts, but also external secondary sex characters often show striking changes. The bill color of the sparrow is light brown during the resting period and becomes blue black …

Studies Of The Electromotive Force In Biological Systems: Iv. The Effect Of Carbon Monoxide On The E. M. F. Of Frog Skin, A. B. Taylor, Edgar John Boell Jan 1934

Studies Of The Electromotive Force In Biological Systems: Iv. The Effect Of Carbon Monoxide On The E. M. F. Of Frog Skin, A. B. Taylor, Edgar John Boell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Using a method similar to that previously reported by Steinbach (1933), Pumphrey and Francis (1933), and others the authors have studied the effect of different carbon monoxide-oxygen mixtures upon the inherent E. M. F. of pieces of isolated frog skin.

A New Character In The Guinea Pig - "Silvering", W. V. Lambert Jan 1934

A New Character In The Guinea Pig - "Silvering", W. V. Lambert

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Silvering is a recessive character that manifests itself by the appearance of many white hairs in the fur, chiefly on the back and sides. At birth the character is not apparent, gray hairs first appearing on the posterior region of the back when an animal is about four months old. The number of gray hairs increases after this age for the next three or four months. In high grade silvers there is a progressive increase in the amount of graying until the animal is about a year old.

A Study Of The Inheritance And The Physiological Behaviour Of Dwarfism Associated With An Eye Defect In Rats, A. Sciuchetti, W. V. Lambert Jan 1934

A Study Of The Inheritance And The Physiological Behaviour Of Dwarfism Associated With An Eye Defect In Rats, A. Sciuchetti, W. V. Lambert

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Four dwarfed rats recently appeared in two separate closely related litters of an inbred strain of rats in our colony. There was associated with the dwarfed condition a marked opacity of the eyes apparently causing blindness.

Further Studies On Selection For Resistance To Salmonella Aertrycke In Mice, H. O. Hetzer Jan 1934

Further Studies On Selection For Resistance To Salmonella Aertrycke In Mice, H. O. Hetzer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It was demonstrated by Schott in 1932 that selection for resistance in mice to a standard dose of 5 x 104 S. aertrycke bacteria was effective in decreasing the mortality from 82.3 per cent for the unselected foundation stock to 24.7 per cent in the sixth selected generation. Using the same material as the basis for further study, the complete results for the sixth generation gave a mortality of 22.5 per cent. Further decreases in mortality to 14.7 and 15.6 per cent were observed in the seventh and eighth generations respectively. Groups of mice belonging to the eighth generation …
