The Relationship Between Brain Rhythms And Certain Muscular Rhythms, Charles N. Cofer Jan 1937

The Relationship Between Brain Rhythms And Certain Muscular Rhythms, Charles N. Cofer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In this study an attempt was made to find out whether there is a relationship between the electrical potentials from the left motor area of the brain and the tremor of the third finger of the right hand. Some records also were taken from the visual area and from the index finger. The brain wave and the tremor were recorded simultaneously on sensitized paper.

The Relation Of Orthopedic Disability To Personality Adjustment, H. E. Scarbrough Jan 1937

The Relation Of Orthopedic Disability To Personality Adjustment, H. E. Scarbrough

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This is a case history study of the relation of orthopedic disability to personality adjustment. School adjustment has been concentrated upon as the area in which to study the personality adjustments. The cases will consist of six high school and college students with orthopedic disabilities of varying severity.

Spermatogenesis In The Ovariotomized Hen, A Cytological Study, Richard Avery Miller Jan 1937

Spermatogenesis In The Ovariotomized Hen, A Cytological Study, Richard Avery Miller

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is known that after ovariotomy in the pullet the vestigal right gonad hypertrophies. In this study hatching chicks were castrated. At maturity serum of the pregnant mare was injected and the birds killed during the night hours. By this method hypertrophied testis like structures with many cells in active mitosis were secured. Special consideration is given to the chromosome complex in these sex reversed females.

A Descriptive Glossary Of Physics, Le Roy D. Weld Jan 1937

A Descriptive Glossary Of Physics, Le Roy D. Weld

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In 1933 I exhibited to the Physics Section of the Academy a crude collection of about 3,500 definitions of physical terms in card-index form, compiled for and used by the physics students of Coe College. The hope was then expressed that means might be found to promote the extension and eventual publication of this glossary.

The Woody Plants Of Southeastern Iowa, Malcolm Mcdonald Jan 1937

The Woody Plants Of Southeastern Iowa, Malcolm Mcdonald

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This is a preliminary list of the species of trees and shrubs of southeastern Iowa, consisting of the counties of Davis, Des Moines, Henry, Jefferson, Keokuk, Lee, Louisa, Van Buren, Wapello, and Washington. The limits of the region were chosen for convenience in collecting and coincide fairly well with the forest belt of southeastern Iowa. The work at Parsons College as originally planned was to include all the above named counties, but extensive collecting has been done only in Jefferson and Van Buren Counties.

Geography Of The Beet-Sugar Industry In Iowa, John E. Smith Jan 1937

Geography Of The Beet-Sugar Industry In Iowa, John E. Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

At present the beet-sugar industry is confined to a narrow strip near the northern boundary of the state. The industry is limited in extent by geographic conditions and these are applied to this enterprise in Iowa. The possibility of expansion of sugar production in Iowa is also discussed from this viewpoint.

Optical Excitation Of Mercury-Hydride, L. O. Olsen Jan 1937

Optical Excitation Of Mercury-Hydride, L. O. Olsen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A mixture of mercury vapor and water vapor in a resonance tube is illuminated with, (1) a mercury and hydrogen discharge tube; (2) a mercury and helium discharge tube. Photographs of the fluorescent spectra show that some mercury hydride molecules are formed in the resonance tube.

Effects Of Ultra-Violent Light On Diapause And Postdiapause Grasshopper Eggs (Orthoptera), Malcolm Ray Jan 1937

Effects Of Ultra-Violent Light On Diapause And Postdiapause Grasshopper Eggs (Orthoptera), Malcolm Ray

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the irradiation of Melanoplus differentialis eggs, the entire spectrum of a quartz mercury vapor arc was utilized with the energy input and the distance from the lamp to the eggs kept constant. The dosages were controlled by varying the length of exposure. The eggs were irradiated on moist paper, under quartz plates and at constant temperature. Oxygen consumption and percentage of hatching was determined.

Automatic Hydrogen-Sulphide Generator, George Atchison Jan 1937

Automatic Hydrogen-Sulphide Generator, George Atchison

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Supplying hydrogen-sulphide gas for a small class in qualitative analysis is usually a difficult problem in a small laboratory. This problem was solved at Upper Iowa University by using the commercial product "Aitch-tu-ess" (H2S) as the source of the gas and setting up the apparatus. This method was found to be both economical and convenient and eliminated practically all of the undesirable odor which so often accompanies a qualitative analysis laboratory.

Recency Of Origin Of Upper Des Moines River, Charles R. Keyes Jan 1937

Recency Of Origin Of Upper Des Moines River, Charles R. Keyes

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Of all of Iowa's drainage features a seemingly unique phase is the gorge of the upper Des Moines River, on that stretch of stream above the Capital City. As is well known, this part of the Valley is a deep, V-shaped gorge gashed in the upland prairie, a canyon, in fact, with short lateral canyons instead of the normally long, widely dendritic tributaries. This gorge has bed-rock walls and bed-rock bottom, attesting its extreme recency of formation. In these respects it contrasts strongly with the valley of the lower Des Moines River, between Des Moines city and the mouth of …

New Mapping Of Geological Boundaries Of Northwest Iowa, A. C. Tester Jan 1937

New Mapping Of Geological Boundaries Of Northwest Iowa, A. C. Tester

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The existing geological maps of Iowa show a continuous blanket of Cretaceous rocks underlying the glacial drift of northwest Iowa. Previous workers have recognized that the Cretaceous was not continuous under the drift and might have a very irregular distribution along the borders as mapped. As a result of over two years of extensive sub-surface studies, assisted during the last nine months by H. G. Hershey, considerable revision of the boundaries of the Cretaceous has been made.
