Some Factors Involved In Academic Success, Audrey F. Tollefson
Some Factors Involved In Academic Success, Audrey F. Tollefson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The present study is an attempt to evaluate such factors as reading rate and comprehension, mental alertness, study habits, visual efficiency and certain associated factors as they relate to academic success. Zero order correlations arc presented with further analysis by multiple correlations techniques. The order of importance of variables studied are presented.
Methods In Teaching Ornithology, T. C. Stephens
Methods In Teaching Ornithology, T. C. Stephens
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A brief outline is here presented of a course in ornithology (bird study, if you prefer) as I have tried to give it - never with complete success, however. In the first place, I have planned a course to give the student four semester hours of credit. (As a matter of fact, the undergraduate student of this day has so many "requirements" to satisfy, for graduation, for major and minor, for a teaching certificate, for practice teaching, or in his pre-professional schedule, that most students have difficulty in finding time for a 4-hour elective course). In many respects the second …
Photo-Enlargements As Teaching Aids, H. L. Dean
Photo-Enlargements As Teaching Aids, H. L. Dean
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In teaching Botany at the State University of Iowa the usual visual aids are regularly employed. These include lantern slides, motion pictures, charts, models and demonstration exhibits. The present note describes another useful visual aid in the teaching of Botany - the use of photo-enlargements. Teachers of other subjects should also find photo-enlargements of value in their classes. Photo-enlargements were used by Professor R. B. Wylie about twelve years ago to illustrate features of the brown algae studied by him in Alaska. These photographs were so well received by his classes and created so much interest that additional enlargements of …
The Use Of "Keys" In Teaching Biological Classification, H. E. Jaques
The Use Of "Keys" In Teaching Biological Classification, H. E. Jaques
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Patagonia would doubtlessly prove thrilling to the biologist if he were only there. When far-distant lands are put out of reach, what can be better than to emphasize the biology of our own immediate locality and that is much more practical for our students. Two fields of interest are brought to our high school and college classes. Some of our students desire a knowledge of biology to use in a professional way. Very often a much larger percentage of the enrollment will never enter any purely biological vocation, hut all may acquire an interest in the common plants and animals …
Parasitology In The High School Curriculum, Elery R. Becker
Parasitology In The High School Curriculum, Elery R. Becker
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In his retiring address to the American Society of Parasitologists, Dr. F. C. Bishop (1938) made the following plea: "I believe there is need for a textbook on parasitology suitable for grade and high school students, and that this society might well take the initiative in getting included in the curriculum of every high school in this country an elementary course in a subject which touches, often in a vital way, the life of every individual." Shall the schoolmen oi Iowa take his plea seriously? Residents of the temperate zone are inclined to refer matters of parasitological interest to mankind …
Student Participation In Field Classes, C. S. Gwynne
Student Participation In Field Classes, C. S. Gwynne
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Field work consisting of trips and excursions out from the class room plays a prominent part in instruction in many of the science courses throughout our educational system. Almost all courses in general or natural science in the secondary schools have it as an attachment of greater or less rating. So also do the technical or applied science courses in colleges. The materials and features with which the various branches of science deal are widely scattered over the earth's surface. They cannot all be brought into the laboratory and dealt with indoors, nor adequately represented by illustrative materials of one …
Teaching The Scientific Method In General Zoology At The College Level, Karl A. Stiles
Teaching The Scientific Method In General Zoology At The College Level, Karl A. Stiles
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Science teachers generally consider teaching the scientific method as one of their chief objectives in a general course. But too often after setting up this objective they leave it. The most widely used textbook of zoology in the Midwest is Hegner's General Zoology and yet there is not one word in this popular text on the scientific method. Two of the newest texts of zoology are Textbook of Zoology by Potter, and Animals without Backbones by Buchsbaum. These books have received much favorable comment yet Buchsbaum's does not contain one word about the scientific method and Potter's devotes about one …
Chemical Microscopy As A Tool And Teaching Method In Chemistry, I. B. Johns
Chemical Microscopy As A Tool And Teaching Method In Chemistry, I. B. Johns
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
By means of a projection apparatus the application of the methods of chemical microscopy to the teaching of general chemistry were illustrated. The simpler types of equipment necessary were shown. The use of the optical methods were shown in the teaching of such things as allotropy and transition temperatures, formation of stable and unstable double salts, formation of solid solutions, eutectics, etc., tests for purity and tests for identity. The teaching of important optical properties of matter by means of simple polarization apparatus was demonstrated.
A Key To Species Of Cyclops In Iowa, Malcolm Mcdonald
A Key To Species Of Cyclops In Iowa, Malcolm Mcdonald
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The genus Cyclops is one of the most common of the m1crocrustacea, and it occurs in almost every body of fresh water. Apparently because of this universality it has developed a wide variety of species and forms which are very difficult to distinguish from each other. For any study of ecological or geographical distribution of the genus, specimens must be identified as to species and subspecies. As an aid to such studies the following key has been compiled. This is not a field key in the sense that it can be used for field identification, but it will serve for …
Influence On Oocyst Production Of Concentration And Kind Of Yeast In Rations Of Rats Infected With Eimeria Nieschulzi, Philip C. Waters
Influence On Oocyst Production Of Concentration And Kind Of Yeast In Rations Of Rats Infected With Eimeria Nieschulzi, Philip C. Waters
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Previous investigators have shown that a liberal supplement of yeast induces higher production of oocysts during an immunizing infection with Eimeria nieschulzi than either certain other supplements or complete lack of supplement. The question arises, however, whether lesser amounts of yeast would result in lower oocyst yields, and conversely, greater amounts in higher yields. Furthermore, because of the seeming association of the substance that produced the conditions requisite for higher oocyst counts with vitamin G, and sometimes B also, it was evident that a study with two strains of yeast differing in comparative content of vitamins B and G would …
The Temperature Cycle In The Okoboji Lakes, Theodore L. Jahn, A. B. Taylor
The Temperature Cycle In The Okoboji Lakes, Theodore L. Jahn, A. B. Taylor
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
For the past thirty years members of the staff of the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory have been interested in the flora and fauna of the Okoboji region. For a somewhat shorter period of time, whenever equipment has been available, studies have been made of the physical and chemical characteristics of the Okoboji Lakes in the hope of obtaining a better understanding of the environmental factors which affect the biological productivity of these bodies of water. The factors which determine the geographical distribution of any given species and the numbers of individuals of that species which are present at any given time …
The Protozoa Of Silver Lake Bog, Don L. Hempstead, Theodore L. Jahn
The Protozoa Of Silver Lake Bog, Don L. Hempstead, Theodore L. Jahn
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The hanging bog which drains into the southwest corner of Silver Lake in Dickinson County, Iowa, offers an environment which is rich in both O2 and H2S. The bog consists of numerous small shallow pools, one to ten feet long, one-half foot to four feet wide, and usually two to six inches deep. (Map, fig. 1). Water from the bottom of these pools has a noticeable odor of hydrogen sulfide. The flora of this bog are being studied by Dr. W. A. Anderson of the botany department of the State University of Iowa.
A Preliminary List Of The Mycetophilidae (Diptera) Known To Occur In Iowa, H. E. Jaques, B. G. Berger
A Preliminary List Of The Mycetophilidae (Diptera) Known To Occur In Iowa, H. E. Jaques, B. G. Berger
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The Dipterous family Mycetophilidae is composed of small to medium sized flies, ranging from two to nine millimeters in length. These fungus-gnats are numerous both in species and in number of individuals to be found in a local habitat. Characteristics of the legs that are particularly noticeable are as follows: elongated coxae, thickened femur and, spured and setose tibia. The adult resembles a mosquito in that it has a small head, antennae with twelve to seventeen joints and a highly arched thorax. Predominating colors are yellow and black; the abdominal segments often have alternate bands of black and yellow. The …
Some Observations On The Habits Of The Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrels, Citellus Tridecemlineatus Tridecemlineatus (Mitchill) Of Iowa, Gow M. Bush
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A number of thirteen-lined ground squirrels, Citellus tridecemlineatus tridecemlincatus, Mitchill were collected from September through November at the Golf Course of the State University of Iowa. Their habits were observed both in the field and in the laboratory, and recorded. It is hoped that these data will not only be of interest but will supplement some of the information already available.
Blood Studies In Chronic Co Asphyxia, Marian Davis, Erma Smith
Blood Studies In Chronic Co Asphyxia, Marian Davis, Erma Smith
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A closed circuit respiration apparatus was devised by means of which albino rats may be exposed to varying percentages of CO-air mixture and maintained in comfort for hourly intervals. The apparatus enclosed 31 liters of air. By trial and error it was found that addition of 0.31 per cent CO to this volume of air made a mixture just sub-lethal for adapted rats placed therein for one hour. Adaptation was brought about by gradually lengthening the daily exposure interval from an initial ten minutes on the first day to one hour in the course of about three weeks. Blood studies. …
Some Phases Of Wound Healing In An Insect (Melanoplus Differentialis), Garth Johnson
Some Phases Of Wound Healing In An Insect (Melanoplus Differentialis), Garth Johnson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A stuck was made of the inflammatory processes and stages of repair following the production of wounds by incision and excision in the fifth abdominal sternite of both nymphs and adults. The following changes may be observed to take place: A clot is formed in the wound aperture, consisting of agglutinated blood cells. Blood serum filters through this structure and hardens by evaporation of water on contact with air, thus sealing the wound. A brown deposit is formed in the clot and in the surrounding zone of injury. Pycnosis takes place in adjacent tissues. A further agglutination of blood cells …
The Effects Of Homologous Carbamates On The Respiratory Metabolism Of Blocked And Active Embryos, Guy M. Everett
The Effects Of Homologous Carbamates On The Respiratory Metabolism Of Blocked And Active Embryos, Guy M. Everett
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The effects of ethyl, n-propyl, and n-butyl carbamate on the respiration of blocked (diapause) and active (postdiapause) grasshopper embryos have been studied. The three compounds are essentially similar in their narcotic action. The oxygen consumption of active embryos is depressed approximately 50 per cent (to the diapause level) by 0.25 M ethyl carbamate or 0.025 M n-butyl carbamate. The blocked embryo is depressed only 10 per cent. The rates of oxygen consumption expressed as cu. mm. oxygen per embryo per hour for morphologically similar blocked and active embryos show that concentrations up to 0.025 M n-butyl carbamate have a slight …
Factors Controlling The Incubation Period Of Birds, Warren N. Keck
Factors Controlling The Incubation Period Of Birds, Warren N. Keck
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The incubation period of birds varies from approximately two to four weeks with three rather well defined periods known; namely, two, three and four weeks. Some of the factors suggested by others responsible for this variation include size of egg, condition of young at the time of hatching, temperature, etc. An evaluation of these factors will be discussed. A study of the histology of the digestive tract of an English Sparrow at the time of hatching (14 days) was carefully compared with the digestive tract of a chick incubated for the same length of time. Likewise, the histology of the …
Coccidian Infections Of Western Painted Turtles Of The Okoboji Region, Orville J. Deeds, Theordore L. Jahn
Coccidian Infections Of Western Painted Turtles Of The Okoboji Region, Orville J. Deeds, Theordore L. Jahn
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In a survey of 150 Western Painted turtles (Chrysemys marginata bellii) 56 per cent were found to be infected with one or more species of coccidia. Species found were: Eimeria chrysemydis n. sp. Incidence: 34 % Oocysts oval, 23µ x 15µ; differs from E. delagei in that the granular mass does not form a crescent and vacuole, in that there is no definite arrangement of sporocysts, and in host and geographical distribution. Eimeria delagei var. marginata n. var. Incidence 6.7 per cent. Differs from E. delagei in that segmentation does not result in five equal spheres and in that there …
A Study Of Trichomonas Columbae, Margaret Stiles
A Study Of Trichomonas Columbae, Margaret Stiles
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Two varieties of Trichomonas columbae have been observed infecting the buccal and pharyngeal cavities of the common homing pigeon. A study was made of the morphology of each variety, the reproduction, and the pathogenicity in pigeons and developing chicks.
Effects Of X-Rays On The Early Development Of The Grasshopper, Titus C. Evans
Effects Of X-Rays On The Early Development Of The Grasshopper, Titus C. Evans
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Eggs of Melanoplus differentialis were irradiated with different dosages of X-rays on the first day of development. Effects were noted on the subsequent increase in number and kinds of cells, weight and rate of oxygen consumption.
Absorption Of Light In The Okoboji Lakes, A. B. Taylor, Theodore Louis Jahn
Absorption Of Light In The Okoboji Lakes, A. B. Taylor, Theodore Louis Jahn
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In August 1938 the absorption of light was measured at various depths in the Okoboji Lakes by means of a photronic cell and a tungsten filament lamp which were mounted behind glass windows in separate metal housings so that a parallel beam of light passed through one half meter of water before striking the photronic cell. This apparatus could be lowered to any desired depth, and the transmission at that depth could be measured with a microammeter. This was converted to percentage transmission through one meter by comparison with a similar reading taken with the apparatus in air. After the …
